Hey Carptrash. Nice to meet you. As you probably noticed I have been adding to the list of Post Office Murals artists. I noticed that you started the list back in Dec 2011. I'm getting most of my names from http://postalmuseum.si.edu/indiansatthepostoffice/mural12.html. I'm tempted to put a reference with each artist (at least for the ones I have added and the ones I will be adding). I don't know how long the list will get or if that is a problem. When uploading images of three-dimensional public domain objects such as statues, in addition to a copyright tag specifying the copyright status of the statue, please include a copyright tag for the photo as well. Well it isn't like I didn't want to be in the running for military historian of the year, but the community hasn't nominated me for the award in years (like four or five to be precise) . I had hoped I would at least be nominated this year, but it didn't happen. I guess that's life, and its not the end of the world. At the end of the day it doesn't much change who I am or what I do here, the process merely demonstrates the barometer the project's contributors places on who has done what to warrant a nod and a shot at the year's top awards. Everyone be entitled to their opinion, and I grant that this may stop people from looking at me seriously, although you'd think that since Wikipedia operates mostly as a meritocracy there would be some room for forgiveness in people's hearts. After[edit]

the hub-bub of the holidays we'll have to converse about how to gather Images, etc. I understand that because the artist's were government employees their Images are Public Domain I just don't know the "How to..." of moving them from where I find them on the Internet to WP:Commons. There is so much to do and I think useful info is getting lost (by me) in the process of creating the List. I'm collecting Artist Bio stuff at User talk:Buster7/sandbox for future work and, not always, but every now and then, when I go to an Existing Artist WP Article, I'll add info about the mural...but only sometimes. My way seems haphazard and sporadic. I guess I'm asking how you store and categorize all the gobs of info that comes in front of you when your doing a project like The List. I guess I know The List is a long term commitment and I want to start doing things the easiest way. Like I said...mid-January or so...```Buster Seven Talk 16:51, 19 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I've fixed 'em both. As to photos, there's not a lot I can do on that front. (I can try and get some shots of the murals in Arlington in situ...that's the only post office near at hand to me. I can eventually hit some of the ones in the valley - Strasburg, Luray - but that will take more time, and wherewithal that I don't have at the moment.)

Meanwhile, having 3,000 articles on my watch list, I have been enticed into creating a new article, New Formalism (architecture) - out of a discussion at Stripped Classicism. And then Mom woke up in the middle of everything, so it has been a wild morning so far. And yes, our, "little" project has been immensely satisfying and is bordering on a life long venture. I have a binder somewhere of my mural slides, but have not been able to locate it since my move. My guru was fond of saying. "Life is supposed to be interesting. This is how the universe expands." Yes, I agree. There is no foreseeable end to this project and it already has expanded my life...WP and real. My wife and I have even started to write a rough draft for a novel, The Muralist, about a multi-personality serial killer that is as charming as can be until someone criticizes his work. Love, Sex and great tunes from the '30s and '40s (for the Movie adaptation). He goes from town to town over the life of "the Section of Fine Arts" assuming different names (there are so many interesting ones to choose from) and wardrobes and interesting "peccadilloes---->(busterism). This morning the disam bot told me about 5 or 6 which I took care of. But it reminded me to let you know why I am adding (artist) and letting it "show up" on The List. In a week or two we will be done with the basic Info and we will {individually) "wander" around the List, fixing things, filling in gaps, researching for NRHP listings (two of the PO disams from this morning are NRHP but I didn't take the time to add them to The List, etc. etc. We will continue our collaboration and chop away at the many options available as to "what to do first". For me, it changes everyday. So...I thought that by letting {artist) show up on The List I would create article for those artists first...gotta start somewhere. So here's what I just ran into, updating an artist (Edward Laning). The New York Times. in his obit, has him painting murals for the Works Progress Administration. Since his PO mural was not under the WPA but the Federal Art Project should I remove a NYT reference as being unreliable? I think not. I will just add my own. I have had intermittent Internet serviced for a few days. A 'Tech" is coming today. Before I lose connection, I noticed that some of the states in the List do not have references. I forget which one of us did them so I'm reluctant to just plug in the one I used most...Living New Deal. The states are SoDakota, SoCarolina, Road Island, Port-o-rico, Penn., and Oreegone. I spent a little time this morning at Belle Baranceanu and I have a general "Should I make a change" question. I think the Sections are miss-labeled. What is called "Notes" should be called "References" and what is called "References" should be called "See also". Wouldn't that be more consistent with most other WP "bios"??? Responding to your question on my talk page, When the prior editor wrote that "Sculptor Janet Scudder had DWM's roles as subjects for sculpture in mind when ........." they were presuming to summarize what was thereafter quoted. However neither the actual term used "DWM"[sic], nor the term 'deceased white men' were actually used by the author quoted, thus effectively making the quote the opinion of the editor/quoter, not the person quoted. Strange pairing[edit]

What a bizarre juxtaposition it is to build a fountain featuring centaurs and mythical creatures alongside a sculpture group depicting a historical event. Certainly, Saint-Gaudens loved to insert his goddesses, but they represented the goals/ideals/accomplishments of the sculpture's subject. When he died is not important. Though an interesting thing to take note of. Any of his works created prior to 1923 are copyright free. The ones that he did between than and his death are still under copyright IF they were renewed after 27 years (or something like that). Very few sculptors, in my experience, did the renewal thing. However to be sure one need to figure out the year that a work need to be renewed in and then check the records for that year. I have a process for which to do that, it is a bit cumbersome and not exactly available for another month or two. Until after my eye surgery is done and I have glasses that work. hard at work
Thank you everyone and all who stumble across this. It will eventually make its way over to my User Page. First tho, I have cataract and glaucoma surgery in a few weeks to get through. Buster, in his generous note, mentions our list. For me that project was a god send because I could do a lot of work using a magnifying glass - since what I was engaged in was essentially data entry from one or two sources to wikipedia. However more complex editing is sort of out-of-reach for a bit and so receiving this very meaningful award is a very gratifying way to slip into semi-retirement until surgery, recovery and then new glasses have done what they are going to do. Few of us (wikipedia editors) do what we do for the recognition involved so when something like this comes along it is - for me at least - doubly or triply - significant. I did recently order and receive a dictionary of American Women artists of the twentieth century, and have discovered perhaps 7 of the 70 or so muralists that Buster and have lined up for articles, a disappointing number, but some movement forward and something to look forward to in the foreseeable future. "They" are doing what they always do, look for articles that don't belong. it is nice when they take the trouble to research both the subject and the article authors, but if they are doing many of these a day,ime becomes an issue. here Violet left this morning, heading back to NM and she should be about at Winslow, Arizona (home of the "standing on a corner" statue) about now. Mostly if we give these folks what they are asking for they will go away. And yes, she needs a default sort because WE need to add some categories. Violet is the Mrs, I assume. My Mrs of 30 years+ is Cathy. If you spell it with a "K" or even say it with a hard C sound, you will suffer unimaginable misfortune. The Library where I work has started a renovation project {one year, $4 mill). So the little book store in the basement that sells donations has to move out for the duration...and they are selling books "10 cents on the dollar". Got two good ones yesterday...African-American Artists and another that is still in the car (1999 Volvo 600, love it!) . I get that WE need to ad cats. I just found this reminder that I made to myself in my sanbbox : Here is a neat trick to avoid a reprise: never put up a new article unless you have all of your independently confirmable sources in place. The problem is that these appear to be works in progress -- that will open you to tagging. I never put up a new article unless I have my references and links in place. Ecoleetage July 2008. I had surgery on Monday and my eye is almost back to where it was before the proceedure, which is to say, translucent but not transparent. Typing is still a pain in the ass, which is better than a pain in the eye. I cancelled by today and tomorrow's drumming, but am inclined to do it Friday. And so it goes. Glad the pro-SEE-dure is going well and recovery continues. I was thumbing thru my new Directory of Native American Painters (DNAP) by Lester and found myself creating 3 new articles on the same day. I used an existing article (of course I forgot which one) as a template. I copied the whole article, created a sandbox, pasted and transposed and replaced info and data and prose, etc. Moments after they went "live" an editor showed up and tinkered with the refs which was fine....a learning moment for me. And I owe it all to a chance meeting with you. I used to get caught up in the daily drama which is easy to find for a wanderer like me. I still defend myself from criticism but it's different. I am one of those folks who does not really believe in "a chance meeting's", believing instead that there are other forces at work - a sort of gravity that pulls people who need or should be together, together. When you have a free moment....[edit]

can you take a look at T. C. Cannon, an article I worked on this A.M. instead of sleeping-In. (:~) I'm not happy with the other references (called Frederick I think) and feel the "Notes" should be "references" and vice-a-versa and the Frederick ref should be displayed and used like the "Lester" ref. If you decide to make the changes I can "look over your shoulder" and learn how to make the changes. I have been conferring (slightly) with editor User talk:Unbuttered Parsnip about increasing my knowledge about refs but he uses a different way (Harvard) and I think I'm just getting confused which seems to be my normal state when dealing with making changes and adding new references to existing articles. Another editor (with limited experience) has now changed my reference to coincide with the previous references which I think were not properly in accordance with the MoS in the first place. It was one of Nabokov's first English publications. But it's not clear, is Hilda Ward from you article the same person who helped Nabokov? Nabokov's biographer Brian Boyd wrote that Hilda Ward, a translator, was introduced to Nabokov by Elena Mogilat, a teacher of Russian in Colombia. May be it could help to find the answer. I was wrong, Nabokov wrote nothing about Hilda Ward in 1951. As an art historian this is something that I have stumbled across many times over the years and finally decided to collect this information, so created this category. If it applies to living people, so be it. However I do appreciate that you contacted me rather than slash and burning it. I have not thought much beyond the art world, but I see no reason to limit a list as long as the "teacher" is someone notable, as defined by "having wikipedia article about them." I know very little about colonial artists, though might have some info on some if I have a name to go by. One theory of American art (which I sort of buy into, but am always willing to change) is that there was not such thing as colonial art if you leave out folk art. I have some stuff on early tombstones but . . . ... tell me more, tell me more. Regarding colonial artists, I've been doing some work in that arena of late - have a look at John Mare (painter), for instance. I take your point, about folk art, but I don't entirely agree with it; there was some work of very high quality being done in a couple of the urban centers, especially Boston, for at least a couple of decades before the Revolution. Eight Southern Women[edit]

A new reference tool[edit]

Hello Books & Bytes subscribers. There is a new Visual Editor reference feature in development called Citoid. It is designed to "auto-fill" references using a URL or DOI. We would really appreciate you testing whether TWL partners' references work in Citoid. Sharing your results will help the developers fix bugs and improve the system. Yeesh, $63? I bought my copy in the museum store for ten bucks - primarily as a Wiki source. (I must confess that in perusing it I didn't find much that I cared for, though there are a couple of pieces I wouldn't mind hanging on my walls.) If you're interested you can try writing them and see if they'll sell you one by mail - their shop prices were quite reasonable. (I bought another book, also as a source, titled Impressionism and the South - two dollars. Also a third catalog, which I intend to use for articles but which is also a memento of a lovely little exhibit I saw there, for ten bucks again.)
Greenville is an interesting museum - it specializes in art of the South, about which I don't know very much. There was an exhibit of paintings from the Johnson Collection (http://thejohnsoncollection.org/) on display, and another of work by a fellow named Sidney Dickinson. No article (yet - ha), and I'd never heard of him before, but his works are most fascinating. And quite disturbing, some of them. If you ever go to the Carolinas, it's well worth a visit. I'd love to get them involved in an edit-a-thon based on their collection.
Actually, Greenville is worth it for the museum and gallery at Bob Jones University, too, which has a fine collection of Old Master religious works. There's also the Columbia Museum of Art in Columbia, SC, and the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh - we hit all four on that trip I just came back from. Did you ever get this resolved? From the photo, you can see his rank as lieutenant colonel which he became in 1861. Hal may be able to be more specific.

I think it was worked out okay but while at that article I seemed (another word for "my opinion") to be in-between two editors who had a lot of ownership issues about the article so I sleazed out. Edit-a-thon at U of C[edit]

Yesterday I attended above at the University of Chicago Regenstein Library with a few other editors. The Special Collection section was open for our use and the staff had selected some Women that were historic to U of C for editor developing. I got lucky with Maude Hutchins. Her article was pretty much a stub, only mentioning her later years as an author. But her early life, as an artist, was completely missing. Right away I found a great article from 1928, The Chicago Sunday Tribune, from which I gathered loads of wonderful info. It was a treat to handle the actual document, in this case a weathered copy of the article and other notices and ads for shows, and little blurbs from the Chicago Maroon, the school paper. Not all of it was usable but it was a gas to read, and, I say this with a straight face, fondle. Also, I JethroBT pointed out the "Named references clipboard" which I never knew about. It was like hearing the Beetles for the first time. Hope all is well. The ANI case I was focussed on is over and we await the ARBCom proposals. TRA!. Sounds like a good time. You are serious looking - at least compared to the 20 year olds. Well a couple of years editing wikipedia will add a couple of decades to their looks. I am fine, still not quite up to full scale editing, but I just picked up "The Women Artist in the American West

Peer review & document improvement request about "(Indian) Copyright Act, 1957" at en wikisource[edit]

In last couple of days, at english language wikisource project, I have worked quite a bit on (Indian) Copyright Act, 1957 to update the same to include changes of copyright amendment act 2012. Please note on most of internet as of now Copyright Act, 1957 may not be uptodate with 2012 amendments, and en wikisource would be one of those few (and also free) places where people can refer the updated document, Provided that it is peer reviewed for accuracy.

I am seeking your kind help in peer review and improvement of this document at en wikisource.
