Your punctuation edits

An edit you made to Pardon the Interruption happened to show up on my watchlist. Per the Manual of Style, ending punctuation (periods/commas) only go inside quotes when the quotation is a complete sentence. Note that this is not standard American English usage, so it may look wrong to some users. I was just letting you know, since you seem to be making a lot of these types of edits. It might be a good idea to change them back before they got lost in subsequent edits. --Fru1tbat 22:27, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

I tend to disagree, based on grammar I have learned forever that periods go inside quoatation marks, without an exception that I can think of, in American English, Apparantly, according to this discussion, my use of the period is fine, and I believe technically correct. You're right about American English usage, but the MoS makes it clear that Wikipedia doesn't adhere strictly to American English usage, and the recommended style is in fact somewhere between American and British usage. The case that you referenced on the talk page is pretty specific in its discussion of a long sentence fragment that includes the end of a sentence. In that case, I would agree with you that the period belongs inside the quotation marks. However, the uses I'm talking about (e.g. the ones you changed in the Pardon the Interruption article [1]) are unrelated to that discussion. For instance:

Reali referred to it as a "squadoozle."

A very short quote like that clearly falls under the standard guideline on the main page. --Fru1tbat 23:04, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

And I would still rather stick to what I have learned, being that I am editing things in the United States. It just seems one way is correct based on "Wikipedia", and one way is correct based on "English." Bmitchelf 01:01, 1 December 2006 (UTC)

Personal preference is ok, except when it goes against established guidelines. The idea is to have a somewhat consistent style for the entire encyclopedia. Also, remember that this is the English language encyclopedia, not the American encyclopedia. As I'm sure you know, some leeway is allowed, for instance, articles about British subjects usually favor British spellings, and articles about American subjects usually favor American spellings. But punctuation is something that is supposed to be standardized throughout. The guidelines are there for a reason, and you'll probably run into less resistance if you choose to accept them. Schedule edits

My first thought is that if we were a bit more generic with the dates (i.e., "early January" as opposed to citing specific dates) that it would pass muster. The reason I'm so married to making these changes is that there was the AfD vote for the station listings for each of the networks last month. I'm concerned that if these entries remain very specific, the hard-lined folks who are looking for an opportunity to yank stuff will use WP:NOT to justify doing just that. But if we remain more general (and certainly linking to Futon Critic, Broadcasting|Cable, MultiChannel News or wherever else we find the info on the web), it'll keep the hardliners at bay. --Mhking 01:41, 19 December 2006 (UTC)

Jim Rome Is Burning

ESPN may call it "Jim Rome is Burning", however there are guidelines that Wikipedia follows, which includes all verbs being capitalized in titles. I'm moving it back to Jim Rome Is Burning. Evan Reyes 22:02, 10 February 2007 (UTC)

I can't find the specific WP rule right now, but it is supposed to go by its common or official name when possible, which has the lowercase "i", so I had to move it back. "In general, titles of books, films, and other works are also capitalized, except for articles (a, and, the) and prepositions and conjunctions shorter than five letters (e.g., to, from, and). Examples: A New Kind of Science, Ghost in the Shell, To Be or Not to Be.

Because credibility is a primary objective in the creation of any reference work, and because Wikipedia strives to become a leading (if not the) leading reference work in its genre, formality and an adherence to conventions widely used in the genre are critically important to credibility."

"Is" is neither and article, preposition, nor conjunction. Just because ESPN renders the title of the show with a lowercase "i" does not mean that Wikipedia should as well. Being a sports network, it's highly doubtful ESPN is concerned with issues such as naming conventions and manuals of style. However, Wikipedia is, and therefore the correct title of the article is "Jim Rome Is Burning". Many articles possessing the seemingly "official" rendering have been overturned on Wikipedia. New York Rangers

The 'restrictive guideline' at Wikipedia: WikiProject Ice Hockey/Team pages format, has been removed (backed by consensus). All 30 NHL team pages' HHOF section may allow ALL HHOFers. Therefore 'Terry Sawchuck' is included in the Rangers HHOF section. See, WPTT for consensus. There's been past arguments about the HHOF section (who belongs, who doesn't). It easier 'not' to wiki-link 'interim' alternate captains (like Nylander). 1)it cuts down on adding & removing wiki-links (according to players injury status) & 2)it helps distinguish 'filling-in' alternates from the regular alternates. GoodDay 19:24, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

If we wiki-link Nylander (NYR), Axelsson & Savard (Bos) and Liehtenen (Dal) 'A's? less familiar readers may mistaken the teams as having more 'alternates' then they really have. The only other solution would be to 'not' add the 'A's to interim alternates (that could be difficult as editors have gotten used to adding them, particularly anon IP adresses). Around the Horn

You made a statement: "(rv - how is that original research, it's not a score)". I'm sorry I said score. I was really thinking about something else when I was typing or something. I meant to say numbers or something. I think to add the numbers every day is original research. There is no source for the numbers outside of 1,000, so adding numbers every day would be un-verifiable and inaccurate. Also, it is tedious to keep updating the numbers every day because a simple "1000+" note can remain there. I appologize of the wording once again, don't know what I was thinking, but I still feel strongly that updating the numbers every day has a chance to be inaccurate. What if they get off a day? After they say it's 1,000, you just add the shows every day that it is on; I'm sure somebody will be watching. Plus, there is the Yahoo group, so if you miss a show, it verifies there that it was on that day. Other weekdaily shows like talk shows and soap operas are updated every day, as well, and in those cases it is harder because they show reruns, while Around the Horn does not. It's like saying The Simpsons shouldn't have an episode count updated because the only way to know what episode they are on is to look online, especially since FOX doesn't tell the truth about their episode count. Anyway, if you really go by the letter of the rule, practically everything on Wikipedia could be orginal research, if it doesn't have a reference. bmitchelf•T•F 17:41, 14 July 2007 (UTC)

I wonder (sometimes). If the 30 NHL official websites used diacritics, and I argued against it? What do you think would happen to me 'by now'? Would Djsasso demand compliance with the websites? As you probably know; for the sake of the 30 NHL team pages (and my blood pressure), I've ended my part in the discussion at WikiProject Ice Hockey. There was no 'consensus' to hide those diacritics and also (though not mentioned) no 'consensus' to show them. It's so frustrating, I had a goal (no hockey pun, intended) to keep all dios off of the NHL team pages and keep all dios on IIHF team pages (along with respective related pages). It was renamed Wikipedia:WikiProject Ice Hockey/Article Improvement, and it includes two section. The first section is called articles in dire need of improvement. It list articles, usually important, that are in very poor shape. The second section is called requested help. Users list an article they request help improving a certain article, which will facilitate collaboration, which is the aim of any WikiProject. There is one article currently listed there, Henrik Lundqvist, here. The goal is to at least get it to Good article status. Diacritics By Maxim In the past few weeks, there has been quite heated discussion about the use of diacritics in article name. The current guideline is using diacritics in the pages of articles of all player names which require them, but redirects are exempt. Task forces By Maxim There have been two new task forces started within the WikiProject to coordinate major topics. Sweden Ice Hockey task force This task force was initiated by Krm500. Its current goal is to improve Henrik Lundqvist to Good or Featured article status. It covers all Swedish clubs, leagues and competitions and associated articles, players and coaches that are Swedish, or have played/coached for a Swedish club, and arenas in Sweden. They plan to eventually operate as a sort of a sub-project, which will have its own articles for creation, ranking importance and quality of articles, and co-ordinate article improvement. Its current members are Krm500, Bamsefar75, and CLAES. New Jersey Devils task force This task force was initiated by Bsroiaadn. Its goal is to improve New Jersey Devils to Featured Topic status. Although it currently meets the required article count, the task force wishes to improve it further. Its area of coverage is very similar to the Sweden Ice Hockey task force. Its members are Bsroiaadn, JHMM13, FutureNJGov, Sportskido8, Michael Greiner, JRWalko, and Soxrock. Requested Images By Maxim After discussion on the WikiProject talk page, Serte created a page for Requested Images. The page encourages users to license images for use on articles. The page also has section to request images for players, arenas, game situations, miscellaneous, and team and league logos. The page has been quite popular; since it was created on July 21, there have been six completed requests. There are four currently outstanding requests: Patrik Eliáš — Photo of player, requested by Bsroiaadn Scott Stevens — Photo of player, requested by Bsroiaadn Daniel Alfredsson — Photo of player, requested by Maxim Hart Trophy — Photo of the original Hart Trophy (retired in 1960), requested by Scorpion0422 Article assessement completed By Maxim On July 12, Kaiser matias announced that he had completed assessing all the articles with a {{ice hockey}} tag, sorting them into Category:Unassessed Ice Hockey articles. Kaiser matias has ranked about 9000 articles in that category, and most were stubs, and "have no information at all", according to him. Everybody is encouraged to expand the stubs into real articles. Hiya,

WP:DIRECTORY states that Wikipedia is not an electronic program guide. This means that articles cannot list current schedules/listings. The Ellen article is about the show. The article may include broadcast history, but it cannot say "Ellen can currently be seen here, here, and here. There is extensive precedent for this on Wikipedia. See Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of The Closer broadcasters, Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/International broadcasters for 24 (TV series), and Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of Smallville broadcasters and home video releases for individual broadcaster article debates. Hello. Wondering about your recent edit to New York Islanders seasons. How do you figure the team is 17-17 in playoff series when they won 19 in a row (NHL record) during the 1980s? AMP Energy NHL Winter Classic

Thanks a zillion for all your work recently on this article. I was planning on expanding it greatly after the event took place, and I was quite pleased to find that it had already been done by the time I logged on to do it! I brought Resolute in to take a look at the article because I think it is coming together very nicely and it has potential to be a Good Article. He has had plenty of experience working articles up to that level and getting them to GA status, so he knows what is expected of an article up for promotion. I will be posting a general message to WP:HOCKEY asking anyone else interested in helping the article get to GA for their input.

Thanks for telling me. I think it's pretty straight forward. Basically, I'm not just making the picture public domain. It's my right as the photographer to specify under what conditions the photo can be used.
