Oh, I don't know if The Third World War is the better choice, since the redirects of World War I and World War II are currently using that form

Title. Regards, 14.185.39.76 (talk) 08:09, 3 September 2023 (UTC)

I left a rather desperate question on the talk of that former redirect, now not working any more, and misleading in more articles than I have the time to inspect, example Ellen Taaffe Zwilich. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:08, 7 September 2023 (UTC)

@Gerda Arendt: Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2023 August 24#Contemporary music determined to restore the set index over the redirect. From my brief examination of history, the page was never exactly a stellar article. The original version was moved to Contemporary classical music way back in 2005. After that it morphed into a sort of index, at times more focused on classical or art music and at other times more expansively inclusive of any variety of "contemporary" music. olderwiser 12:04, 7 September 2023 (UTC)
I understand all that, but what do we do now? I started fixing articles I know going wrong, but really would like to spend my time more productively. Any help in sight? I asked also on project Classical music. You were just the messenger of bad news, - sorry about that ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:17, 7 September 2023 (UTC)
One place to start might be templates that give linking to contemporary music as an example for period parameter.
As for fixing the links, perhaps some peeps at WP:WikiProject Disambiguation might be able to help -- although if it involves carefully distinguishing between closely related topics based on subtle contextual cues, that'd best be done by those familiar with the areas. olderwiser 13:22, 7 September 2023 (UTC)
I fixed the template that matters, musical composition, - test and sandbox don't bother me. Thank goodness it was only in the doc (or I would have needed an admin). "Those familiar with the areas" - that's me. I fixed those (ensembles, awards, compositions) where I didn't want misleading for even a day, estimated 50, but there are still hundreds, because ultimately, only very few articles should link to the page about contemporary music in general. Sigh. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:36, 7 September 2023 (UTC)
If most of these should be updated to Contemporary classical music -- some folks at the dab project are adept at using tools to plow through such updates pretty quickly. It's only where decisions are needed is it this or that type of contemporary music that sometimes wrong guesses are made. olderwiser 15:58, 7 September 2023 (UTC)

It is advised

With regards to your edit summary, where is it advised? Iterresise (talk) 09:20, 26 September 2023 (UTC)

Thanks for asking. Seems I may have been misremembering the language in MOSDAB or perhaps have just become so accustomed to seeing pages that cover multiple spelling variations abbreviated with "or variants" that I assumed it was in MOSDAB. I'm going to raise the question at the MOSDAB talk page for other opinions. olderwiser 11:37, 26 September 2023 (UTC)
I have another idea to split the 4 variants into separate pages. I'm moving on to other projects so please don't assume I'm here to have the last word. Iterresise (talk) 03:40, 24 October 2023 (UTC)

REMOVING LINKS HUH

Why did you remove my links on scratch? Abrown1019 (talk) 18:46, 26 September 2023 (UTC)

Because your edits were wildly at variance with the manual of style for disambiguation pages. olderwiser 19:45, 26 September 2023 (UTC)

Edit on Beluga (disambiguation)

I noticed that you reverted my edit to Beluga (disambiguation). Could you please explain your reason for reverting my edit. A.FLOCK (talk) 02:56, 29 September 2023 (UTC)

@A.FLOCK (talk page watcher)Because every disambiguation page must include a blue link to either an article on the topic or an article which has info about it, and your entry did not. See MOS:DAB. PamD 06:11, 29 September 2023 (UTC)

California 500

Hi,

I see you have reverted edits I made to pages relating to the California 500. Please also then revert the talk page discussions.

Thanks. RegalZ8790 (talk) 20:03, 9 October 2023 (UTC)

Done, although there was nothing preventing you from doing so. olderwiser 20:48, 9 October 2023 (UTC)

Hi Bkonrad,

Thanks for your deletion of Eastern (country subdivision) (disambiguation). I'm finding a way to accelerate the deletion of such redirects, including Kang (Android) (disambiguation). I don't know how you find Eastern (country subdivision) (disambiguation), but is your deletion under G6 criteria? Thanks, NmWTfs85lXusaybq (talk) 00:23, 11 October 2023 (UTC)

Yeah, G6 probably fits best. G14 could also apply, for example since Eastern (country subdivision) is not a disambiguation page. I mostly notice these as I have Category:Disambiguation pages and Category:Redirects to disambiguation pages on my watchlist and occasionally notice such additions. olderwiser 11:05, 11 October 2023 (UTC)
G14 may not literally apply if the redirect could be easily retargeted to the base name without the incomplete disambiguator, while unsuitability of the target might not meet a CSD criteria. Kang (Android) (disambiguation) has been moved to Kang (Android) and retargeted to AOKP which finished the job. Thanks for your reply. NmWTfs85lXusaybq (talk) 11:42, 11 October 2023 (UTC)
If the target of a redirect is not a disambiguation page (or page with similar function), G14 would apply. olderwiser 13:00, 11 October 2023 (UTC)
Sorry, I should have clarified a bit more. In the case of Kang (Android) (disambiguation), it originally targeted to Kang (see Special:Diff/484743470), which has been a disambiguation page ever since the creation of the redirect. As for the redirect of the form "Basename (incomplete disambiguator) (disambiguation)", it always targets a disambiguation page originally no matter if "Basename (incomplete disambiguator)" exists, unless Basename (incomplete disambiguator) (disambiguation) is originally pointed to Basename (incomplete disambiguator). In that case, Basename (incomplete disambiguator) (disambiguation) could be easily retargeted to Basename (disambiguation) or its target, which is often done immediately after it appears on a G8 watchlist. Although it could sometimes result in a less helpful redirect, G14 or other CSD criteria won't easily apply. Therefore, I have to tag them as G6 candidate which risks being declined and asked to start a RfD instead. NmWTfs85lXusaybq (talk) 13:47, 11 October 2023 (UTC)
These are useless redirects by even the most rabid inclusionist standards. Unless the redirect is preserving some significant edit history, no one in their right mind would question their deletion (or if they are resulting from a round-robin move to surpress creation of a redirect). olderwiser 15:40, 11 October 2023 (UTC)
Then again, if these are declined as G6, it is of little consequence. Just a bit more completely useless clutter (of which Wikipedia has no shortage). olderwiser 15:42, 11 October 2023 (UTC)
