Reliable Information

Does iTunes count as a reliable source? If not, what does, because the Australia EP features both "By The Boab Tree" and "Waltzing Matilda" as performed by Ophelia of the Spirits, who is in fact Angela Little, according to her myspace and webpages. How can I convey this information?

Melbourne

Good to know. The population figure I cited for Melbourne was an estimate that a demographer friend of mine gave me. I posted it because Melbourne's population is not as low as 3.8 million any more, and wanted the page to reflect that. Apparently it's harder to share information on wikipedia than I imagined.

Measurements

Hi. Thanks for the comment that one of my edits "seemed to be" original research. I've found that if a distance measurement is of the type that could be verified by any user or any editor with any atlas or many mapping sites on line, then a large majority of editors, administators, etc. do not classify that in any way as original research (and don't require listing any source such as "Times Atlas" and Times gazetteer.) If they were, then 4/5 of WP geography ("10 miles east of.....border Pacific Ocean for 100 miles.....4 miles off the Northern Territories coast"......etc., etc. would have to be deleted,yes?

As far as the extreme points article, I was surprised a couple (?) years ago when I saw "most remote city" added by someone. ("Perth"....I wasn't sure the category fit in the article at all.) I then added Honolulu. I think you would agree that if Auckland at 1 million pop. had a 900,000 pop. city nearby, then it wouldn't be listed as "remote", right?

So where is the "cut-off?" Common sense (and a dictionary definition of "remote") would dictate that it would be lower than an allowance for "big" cities like Wellington and Christchurch (I got to travel to there and Tasmania...outstanding!) For a long time until a few weeks ago, most readers/potential editors of this remote points article apparently seemed to feel that the proximity of a couple cities nearing half a million to Auckland disqualify Auckland from "remote" status, when Perth and Honolulu have no cities over 50,0000 (!) or so pop. anywhere near them. I think most do. I sure do....makes sense, yes?

Comes down to a definition of "remote", I suppose..... But by any definition, "remote" certainly does not mean nearby(by Perth-Honolulu standards!) 400,000 pop. cities, so I reverted back to the way it has been for the past year or two. Hope you agree, as I've seen how much good work you've done, esp. with maps (I like your NSW & N. Terr. maps!).....There are so few of us professional cartographers around (I'm have only done a couple for WP but have been a prof cartographer in the US for 30 years) that we need to work together! You maight also enquire as to why Hurricane Katrina, a featured article, is quite comfortable with the use of local time. "Katrina made its second landfall at 6:10 a.m. CDT on Monday, August 29 as a Category 3 hurricane " (my bolding). Australian National Airways vs ANA

Hi Bidgee,

I know that the much better known Holyman's Australian National Airways was commonly known as "ANA", but Kingsford Smith's earlier airline was a completely seperate entity, and I've never seen the abbreviation used on any material relating to the earlier airline (here for example). Re: Please Assume Good Faith!

My apologies for what happened yesterday with Tropical Storm Dongo and 2008–09 Australian region cyclone season, I meant in no way, shape, or form for it to be a personal attack or assuming bad faith. I was a bit frustrated in RL at the time and I wasn't really in the mood for a {{fact}} tag on something that had it referenced, despite the reference being in the incorrect place. As for the Australian Region mishap, I meant to hit "rollback" instead of "rollback (vandalism)" and I didn't notice that until after it had completed the task. I know both your edits were good faith as there was nothing wrong with either of them, both incidents were caused by mistakes on my part. That said, for the information you questioned for Dongo, it would have been better if you either placed the {{fact}} at the appropriate place in the main body of the article as the lead is a summary of the article and doesn't need referencing, or left a note on either my talk page or the articles talk page about that statement. Well done on getting the photo of Kay Hull (and a good one too!) It goes a long way towards demonstrating, contrary to the view of WP:AUSPOL, it is possible to get photographs of serving politicians in Australia. Did you let her know it was for use on Wikipedia? Hello. I don't know much about WP in so far as structure and I really don't care. however I believe that my website is a "standard" for information related to chasing storms and since its restructuring it will become a repository for life saving information meant for teachers to use in their classrooms. I could care less about the search engine business as well. Our thoughts were that if teachers searched the WP article that they perhaps might visit the site and find the information that they are looking for. You think unilaterally deleting a picture (no discussion with me) is a 'contribution' to the Murray cod page??? I don't think so. And Wiki ettiquette aside, that page is entirely the work of myself and colleague, so I don't take kindly to such action. And since when is one picture enough? Said you? Again I suggest that you take sometime and read WP:OWN and WP:AGF which are policies of Wikipedia. You don't own the article nor does your colleague and I don't own the article. There is a Commons template located on the bottom of the page for all media of the Murray cod. Launceston Airport temperature

Do you really think an Examiner article is as good a reference as the official BOM site? The Examiner must of got the info from the Bureau but things seem to be slightly different. The bureau says Launceston Airport was 39.9°C and says Launceston got to 39.0°C. The Examiner article however decides Launceston got to 38.7° in the article part and then changed to 38.8 in the Extreme hot spots section. The BOM would have to be a more accurate source i'd imagine. Unless it's gone a bit wacko because a guy from the BOM said Launceston Airport got to over 40°C on the radio Aaroncrick (Tassie Talk) 03:18, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

I got a reply from BOM; There are two sites at Launceston Airport. On Friday 30th the old one recorded 39.9 and the new reached 40.4. Launceston did reach a maximum of 39.0. Not the 38.7 or 38.8 that was used in the Examiner Article. Cheers Aaroncrick (Tassie Talk) 05:27, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

you reverted an admittedly unreferenced profit figure to an equally unreferenced profit figure from 2 years ago. why ? instead why not add a reference to the correct latest figure ?

Hello, I'm responsible for that section Avianca in the Spanish Wikipedia is featured article, and looking at the issues that I have seen it insist that Avianca was founded in 1940, when it really was founded on December 5, 1919 with SCADTA name where it later became a name change to AVIANCA and is made in Colombia as AVIANCA and founded in 1919, I quote from www.avianca.com to check the veracity of what I say:

I've had a sandbox for Cyclone Billy for a while but I haven't been expanding it since it made its first landfall as a Category 2 cyclone. We're in the same boat with the sleep and the smoke and everything. I can assure you that any info I add won't be completely unsourced. Policy is in need of amendment regarding the inclusion of non-commercial radio sources amongst other things, and this also annoys me. I can understand your frustration with people adding completely unsourced information and I suppose we can hold off on some inclusions until we get a WP out of date policy certified source. You need a reliable and verifiable source. ATM the only source I've found is The Daily Advertiser which suits both of the source policies. If you can find anything. Maybe if you say you do know him or his family is to request that he add's his place of birth on his BIO on the Wiggles website (I'm sure I've seen his BIO there not sure). 09 vic bushfire info

Thanks :] I've been tracing the path of the Kilmore origin fire more than the weather conditions. It must have swept from Mt. Disapointment to Marysville very quickly. There are alot of scattered spot fire marks between Yarra Glen and Healesville in that more agricultural oriented vegetation, as opposed to the hilly forested areas around Kinglake to Marysville. From Mt. Disapointment they travelled in a SSE direction before reaching Arthur's Creek and St. Andrews from where the wind change seems to have pushed the fires further east through Steels Creek and Narbethong towards Marysville. Wow, Melbourne has had very little smoke, but we can see everything from where we are, looking out over the Yarra Valley, particularly today there's been smoke through all of the hills and there's alot of them. Distance of Canberra by road to Brisbane, Adelaide & Perth

My edits to the distance of the Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth from Canberra was based on Google Maps. The routes taken were via the shortest distance on sealed roads. Canberra to Brisbane Canberra to Adelaide Canberra to PerthScrooke (talk) 07:06, 21 February 2009 (UTC)

In my experience Google Maps is fairly accurate i.e. I have found it agrees closely with paper based road maps whenever I have checked a distance. Having said that, I agree that there may be more reliable sources and I haven't used other methods to cross check the Google Maps values in this case. Also, the distance depends on what route you take and that can be several, especially in the case of Adelaide and Brisbane. The figures used appear to be based on the Canberra city weather station which has data from 1974 to 1988 and is now closed. I suggest using the Canberra Airport AWS which is the official weather station used for Canberra and has 70 years of data up to the present. Thanks for noticing. It won't last though - I'll just get reverted. There does not seem to be many of the good editors watching or caring anymore and the whole article is going down the loo. Same with Sydney. Only 2 years ago it was almost impossible to get rubbish edits in but now they happen all the time. These articles used to be watched like hawks.
