Missing cite in Christopher Gibbons

The article cites "Harper 1999" but no such source is listed in the bibliography. Can you please add? Also, suggest installing a script to highlight such errors in the future. Humanism

I have made some small additions to the article. [2] Do not expect much. The reasons are A) that Buddhism and Taoism are new to me and it was really hard to comprehend their core values and connection to humanism. B)I felt it is somehow Undue to expand further since contemporary humanism is a manifestation of "european-made" humanism (and that is a strong criticism of contemporary humanism). Can you have a look though? I am not sure if I grasp things correctly. Also, if you want to add something yourself, you are more than welcomed. Cinadon36, both practices are deceivingly complex and include apparent (and sometimes purposeful) contradictions which often hide their realities (so your difficulties in comprehension are understandable).

On Taoism, perhaps Chapter 7 of this publication can assist you in understanding the connection better. As far as thinkers in Buddhism, you might check Taixu's writings, which are the main humanistic Buddhism approach I'm aware of. I would love to add something myself but it would have to be in December as I am too busy these next few weeks. I will take a look at what you've added, though. That chapter looks really interesting and I have already made a request on Resource Exchange [3], but I an not sure whether Taixu's writings are RS. Maybe they are primary. I prefer academic sources, they are undisputable. There is some negative feedback already, at the article that there is too much reliance on authors that are humanists. I've not heard Larsson's music, but will definitely add add a reminder to give him a listen! I'm not sure how we can verify that photo's date, though theoretically it should be in public domain since IMDB is mostly user-generated. Hi, Aza! Thanks! Do let me know what you think of those two pieces if and when you get around to them. Each is a half-hour in length. I have also switched the Dag Wirén navbox to your preferred template; and soon I'll do the same for Madetoja, Klami, Sallinen, and Sibelius... I like consistency, if you haven't noticed! Aside: Is it okay for me to add red-links to navboxes? Or is this considered 'bad practice'? Just curious for your informed thoughts. :)

On the Larsson image from IMDB... so I can't use it? Has my river of tears yet reached your feet?! Haha. To lose not only the best (most flattering) photo of the composer, but also his autograph (which I wanted to have SVG'd) stings. Alas, is there not anything to be done? This is what's so nice about research on Finland: finna.fi not only has Finnish culture all in one place, but also helpfully lets one know the copyright status of its images. And my editing requires visuals for inspiration. Do you know if Sweden has anything similar?

I've always liked your navbox approach, it encourages thoroughness and content creation. It is definitely atypical, and I have seen some users hesitant to include red links, but I don't think that perspective is common enough to characterize it as bad practice.

I'm honestly not sure what to do about the Larsson image—it's strange to me that I couldn't find it elsewhere online. You may have to do without it :(

Not sure about the Dagens stunder, but definitely try the Wikipedia:WikiProject Resource Exchange/Resource Request if you have some specific articles you need. Oh, it's a lovely piano concerto, indeed! I don't understand why Saint-Saëns isn't better known, but my theory is that the name is hard to pronounce, unlike Bach or Beethoven or Mozart. Hey... I noticed deep on your to-do list Florence Price. I wanted to say that, if you ever get to this in 2023 or 2024 or 2025 (assuming I'm still around), I want in as a collaborator. I think, in addition to Price, it would be ideal to attend to William Grant Still, too. I in particular would like to make better pages for the symphonies and major tone poems... but help on the bios, too. Hello, Aza - I'm the person who waded in to make corrections to my own bio, on which you clearly have put in so much careful work; most of all I would just like to thank you. I apologize if I violated protocol in trying to fix the few factual errors; I thought I was doing it right; and now, I hope I'm doing it right by weighing in here. I'm not trying to rewrite my own bio to make it the way I want it; I just wanted to eradicate factual errors. As an admirer of your/Ms. Midgette's music criticism, I was happy to write the article. I am certainly willing to work with you; the main issue is a lack of citations. You can see at Talk:Anne Midgette#Recent IP Edits that I started a discussion there concerning this matter yesterday. That would be the best place to work on this, since you have an obvious conflict of interest. Thank you for your patience on this matter. Thanks for the link - I blush at how ignorant I was of how Wikipedia worked, especially given how much I make use of this site, and I appreciate your guidance. I've answered you on the Talk page in the proper place. I did once edit my own Wikipedia page: when I went on maternity leave without warning in 2011, someone edited my Wikipedia page to say that I'd been phased out at the Washington Post as a result of something I'd written in a review about Placido Domingo. I corrected it myself in February, 2012, after someone alerted me to the rather comical allegation. Corrections like the ones you describe are not as a big of a deal, so I would not worry. This is particularly because of the major policy, WP:BLP, which encourages the immediate removal of any potentially libelous (and uncited) material, which the Placido Domingo anecdote on your page would fall under. Historiography of Christianization of the Roman Empire

@Jenhawk777, you come at the perfect time!—from today onwards my schedule should clear up significantly for until January (and I'll probably remove the banner at the top of this page later this evening). I would be happy to clean up the citations there, and agree that it is currently a minor obstacle for GAN. I'll try and tackle this over the the next two days. In the meantime, maybe you could trim the further reading section a little? I see many sources listed there that are hardly directly related to the topic at hand, Torture (2018) and Debating Roman Demography, for instance.

@Jenhawk777 Indeed I've never learned brass, though I did play bassoon for two months :) Let the record state that piano is by-far my primary instrument though.

When I first became active on WP around two years ago I was astonished at the amount of support I received from other editors, and have tried to continue this remarkable tradition of collaboration ever since. You might be surprised how much new editors can do with encouragement and occasional council. Just this year, I advised a new editor (old account, but only recently regularly-active) who brought the Music of Mesopotamia from an essentially information-less state to a hugely comprehensive and cohesive overview. I love that story - so, so much better than my beginnings here. I was harassed by an editor that was eventually permanently banned, but before that he ran me off WP for a year and a half. I documented things he said, but he had so much power and knowledge of how to work the WP system, and I was such an ignorant novice that I didn't think I stood a chance standing up to him and just left. I didn't return till he was gone. Since then I have run into several truly wonderful people, like you, who have restored my faith in how great WP can be. Thank you for sharing that with me. It put a smile on my face. My family is musical too. Between us we have piano, flute, trombone, coronet, clarinet and vocal music, and my daughter is a music teacher. Fun huh? Hi Jenhawk777, a few quick questions about the sources. I'm getting the sense that you're not linking publishers/journals but are linking authors, correct? (Fine by me, just checking that that is the intended scheme). Also, have you given any thought to separating book and journal sources? I don't generally link anything in references, but others often come along and provide an author link for me. I'm grateful. You do whatever you feel like doing however you feel like doing it. I thought everything had to be in alphabetical order, and I am perfectly happy with that. I hate the idea of creating more work for you if it isn't necessary - but if you think it should be done, then I think it should be done. Who invented separating books and journals anyway?! I swear, there are people out there who love all of this ordering down to the tiniest detail way too much! :-) Thank you for your help with this. It makes me want to pull out my hair... Classica music MOS

Hi, Aza! It's nice to have you have you back. Welcome! I wanted your thoughts on something. Having recently written new articles on several violin concertos (Violin Concerto (Larsson), Violin Concerto (Wirén), and Violin Concerto (Klami)), I ended up poking around the corresponding category; I noticed quickly that the every article is written differently in terms of its formatting, i.e., there is no standardization, despite the classical music MOS. In particular, I found great variation with the titles in the lede section, the formatting of the movements (i.e., when to italicize, linking to tempo marking, Arabic vs. Roman numerals, etc.). Do you think it's worth trying to standardize? Is there a Wikignome you know who would be up to the task? I am sure the piano concertos category and the symphonies category is just as bad, although I haven't inspected. When I write articles, I certainly have a particular style that I stick to and it is, to my knowledge, consistent with MOS (although perhaps I am mistaken). Anyway, your thoughts would be welcome! PS: Of late, you may have noticed, my efforts have been at start-class to C-class content creation/development, rather than working at GA's or FA's... I guess I'm feeling like coverage and moderate improvement (of existing articles) is more important than chasing shiny objects. @Silence of Järvenpää, aside from Wikipedia:Naming conventions (music)#Compositions (classical music) and Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Music#Classical music titles, I don't believe there are standardized MOS things for any CM things on Wikipedia, and those two links mainly concern just titles. I don't think the more comprehensive Wikipedia:WikiProject Classical music/Guidelines is "official" enough to warrant mass-gnomish changes, though that would certainly be nice. Forming a consensus on the project page would be the only way to go about that, I think. Most articles of the categories you refer are probably little changed—formatting wise—from whatever the original creator preferred.

I like the route you're going! Currently I'm doing similar things in aiming aiming for B/C with smaller topics and only for FA/GA with larger ones. Aza24 (talk) 00:09, 28 November 2022 (UTC)

Lissitzky help at FARC

Hi Aza! We didn't met here before, but I saw your impressive work on History of Music and Josquin. I never wrote FA-class article before, and the arts are not my usual theme (one of my GAs is indeed an arts biography, but it was much easier to write about Franzisca Baruch given small number of sources available), but some time ago I've decided to save El Lissitzky at FARC. I thought it would be easier, but ended up with complete article overhaul, built on a ton of new sources not used before. I know that's a lot to ask for, but you're the only experienced editor I know who's good both in FAs and in arts, and if you are interested in Lissitzky or in early Russian avant-garde art I would be grateful if you can take a look! It's not fully done (I think it's ~60-70% now), I still need to rewrite several (large) sections, but here it is: draft. Please let me know what do you think. Interesting. I am not so familiar with Lissitzky specifically, though I know his teacher Malevich very well. I am happy to help, though. The most underused source for artist articles on Wikipedia is definitely Grove Art (Lissitzky's article here), which is so often forgotten, and not for any good reason. I'm guessing at some point you're going to want to use Margolin more and perhaps this article.

Your draft seems already chalk full of improvements. I'm afraid you're not going to be able to get away with that many large quotes at FAR. Actually, FAR has become interesting lately, the standards have gone up a quite a bit as editors there seems to be now considering good article quality as a means to improve longevity (so the article doesn't end up back there). Regardless, I do not personally mind long quotes (academics quote things with hardly any limit; I recall a Chomsky book that quoted pages upon pages of Descartes, and not even translated!) but Wikipedians almost never feel the same way. You might be able to get away with a lengthy quote or possibly two in the Legacy section.

A big issue with WP artist biographies is the balance between biography and art. The article currently attempts to combine both, which is a difficult approach, though doable, see William Etty and (not an artist but still applicable) Ezra Pound. You may find it easier to set it up like van Gogh's article, but perhaps the information is too embedded in the article's current state to be worth the reconfiguration. Thanks for your advice! I know that lengthy quotes are my problem, though I think that it's using a proper quote is better than its poor paraphrase (though I agree, that some quotes can be paraphrased, I just doubt that all the quotes should be removed). And some quotes are by Lissitzky himself, I don't want to paraphrase him. About the artist and the art - I do understand what do you mean, but to write the artist's bio without discussing his art and the evolution of his views seems just unnatural. You can say, f.e. that his early period was devoted to children's books, without any discussion and description of that work, but IMO it would be a bad approach. Keeping the artist's own quotes, is of course fine, but I should caution you again that FAR folks will almost certainly be against that many quotes.

Grove is the kind of thing that provides much use as an excellent model; i.e. using the biblio, seeing what generalizations it arrives at and looking to see how one can structure certain events in the subject's life. You should have access to it via the Wikipedia library ([5] – under Oxford Art Online).

Hi Aza! Thanks for your first comments on the draft, I tried to address them. I have a lot of real life work this week, though I'll try to work on the draft too. (I have a lot of sources to read, both Nisbet's and Birnholz thesises are 500+ pages!)

Meanwhile, I have one more question for you, that's one on copyright. I'm not the biggest fan of modern copyright laws, but almost always I can at least understand them. Not this time. Lissitzky died in 1941, and it's 70+ years. Many of his works are done and published before 1927, so should also be PD. But how this can happen? MOMA says that this photo [6] is "© 2022 Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York / VG Bild-Kunst, Bonn", and here they say [7] "© 2015 Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York / VG Bild-Kunst, Bonn". But this work is from 1926: it's before 1927 and more than 70 years passed after the author's death! And the same question about all other MOMA images - Prouns are definetily done (published and exhibited too) before 1927, though they somehow copyrighted all of them. @Artem.G afaik the Copyright Act of 1976 (really of 1978, when it became enforced) had some exceptional consequences for works published before the law, but not for those so old that they are clearly public domain, I think the general rule is before the 1920s. Thus if Lissitzky published the work in the US between the 1920s and 1978, I believe it's a longer period, like 100 years or so after the publication, not death (if he had published before the 1920s in the US then it would just be the normal 70 year rule after his death). I think there are more specific numbers involved here with the 1920s and 100-year marks I refer to, but this is as much as I can recall! Aza24 (talk) 21:30, 19 October 2022 (UTC)

Hey, Aza, nice to see you are back! I think that my draft looks much better now - though I still need to finish Nisbet's and Birnholz's theses - it started to look as a thing. I would be very grateful if you'll have a look - do you think it can be moved to the article? I would also appreciate if you'll copyedit it a bit, as I'm not an English native speaker I write sometimes with abominable mistakes; it's also a reason why I use so many quotes - I'm aware of "close paraphrasing" and try to avoid it by quoting real experts in their own words. The hardest sections are legacy and scholarly assessment - though being a famous avantgardist, Lissitzky is rarely credited for his work at the level of his contemporaries (Chagall, Malevich, Kandinsky (and, by the way, wiki articles on them are not good at all, to say nothing)), and usually being credited as author of just a few works (The Constructor, Beat the Whites! poster, sometimes Prouns, sometimes Unovis, sometimes his Jewish works). I think the article will be the best Lissitzky overview available online (after some copyedit and polishing, incorporating the quotes, etc, etc), especially given that most books are out-of-print, PhD theses are hard to find, grove and many articles are paywalled.

Glad to hear about all of this. Close-paraphrasing will forever be a tricky matter, but I can assure you that being aware of the possibility already places you in better lane than many of those who find trouble with it.

Indeed most Western visual artists post-Renaissance have poor articles. I was just looking at Pablo Picasso's earlier today and realized how deceptively bad it is—I don't know why I had assumed otherwise in the begin with. The quality of the articles was a surprise for me - though Lissitzky was a FA, sources used there where not the best, but at least it was readable. Malevich-Chagall-Kandinsky are in awful state, given that they are much more famous to ordinary audience and that a lot of (good) books about them exist. Articles about Rodchenko, Tatlin, Klutsis and other early avantgardists are even worse, some are mere stubs. Mucube, I assume you’re referring to Li Xian’s commentary? I am not familiar with that text; if it is supplemental, you could probably just cite the HHS like normal and include “Li Xian on the HHS [volume number] etc.”. Regardless, it would be much better to cite something by Bielenstein or Crespigny for Eastern Han maters than the HHS or it commentary. Aza24 (talk) 23:51, 2 December 2022 (UTC)

Is the commentary in the notes section of what you've linked? I'm not sure who that is written by, though I assume Li Xian or Liu Zhao. I would figure out who the author is and simply clarify that it is their commentary in the reference. I doubt that there is a pre-established system for citing specific commentary lines for the HHS. Mahler revert

Re this reversion of my edit. The quote well fitted the heading re the period of neglect of Mahler's music. It is a very strong polemic indeed - "paucity of ideas" - that is spectacularly at odds with more recent appraisals of Mahler's music. This is worth documenting in my opinion. The book is very rare and so this will not be visible otherwise. Yes, there are other quotes possible, some are given in the previous article sentences, but this one more example is very noteworthy. @Chip-chip-2020, there is no RFC; an {{rfc}} template was never used, outside input was never sought and the discussion was never closed. What you linked to is an informal discussion in which two users supported the inclusion and two opposed it. At the end, what seems to be something like a consensus formed, but you've still inserted an image where no one else agreed an image was warranted.

Hi, Aza! Yes, I figured that, once back, you'd return to your labor of love. I have been doing okay ... switching jobs soon, which is why I, too, was away from WP for awhile. Came back recently and accidentally started a fire at Talk:Carl Nielsen (I promise it was an accident!) ... been listening to him a lot of late, and I started a list on his symphonies at User:Silence of Järvenpää/Discography of Nielsen symphony cycles (will use the FL of Discography of Sibelius symphony cycles as a model). I've also been poking around again at User:Silence of Järvenpää/Sibelius loc, dusting it off. Nice to see Nielsen getting more attention, though his FA must be better than Sibelius's article already. You may have started a small fire, but I assure you the one at Talk:Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart#Mozart Infobox RFC is much worse! Though it is rather depressing to see the article get so much attention for a conversation like that, rather than a conversation on how the extremely poor music or legacy sections could be expanded. Alas, I still avoid giving an opinion in either conversation on this matter.

I feel terribly guilty that I couldn't hold up my end of the plan for the LOC. I'm not really sure why; I assumed that text entering would be fine with me, but I think the Chinese monarchs list must have burned that interest of mine out for the time being. Well, we still have a tentative Florence Price collaboration to get to at some point, if I remember correctly. I must have heard more of her music in the past year than my entire lifetime. Just for consistency and categorization—if we only used it for those who were solely classical composers then we would never use it. Igor Stravinsky

Hi there @Aza24, and thank you for your edits over at Igor Stravinsky. I saw your response on the talk page and realize I forgot to respond. I've since expanded the lead and made a number of changes per requests at the GAN. As for the music section, I was curious what you think can be improved. I feel that a lot of the unique and influential aspects of his music are covered under "Influence", and "Music" exists to highlight his phases of composition. Additionally, I see that you cut a chunk of information about the unique orchestration of his works. Do you think this would fit better under "Music" rather than "Influence"? @MyCatIsAChonk, thanks for your work on the article, though I do not think I would have passed the GAN if I was reviewing. Asking about what I think can be improved in the music section is partially missing the point—there is not really a music section to begin with, just a few lines which over generalize hugely complex stylistic changes and development. A proper music section would include discussion of every major Stravinsky work, along with analysis from prominent musicologists and scholars—see equivalent sections in Jean Sibelius (though the integration in this article is a bit choppy), Debussy, Berlioz, Boulez etc.

On the instrument lists, I'm afraid there's really no place for that information in the article—they belong on the individual articles for these pieces. For all of his innovations, there is nothing unique about his choice of instruments; Mahler, Schoenberg, Varese, Ravel etc. each wrote for just as large and diverse (if not larger) ensembles. Featured topic question

Hypothetically (actually not so hypothetically): If I'm trying to get an FT covering flowering plant families, and those families are generally grouped into: long-list-1, long-list-2, long-list-3, and Vitales, an order with just one family that doesn't belong to any of the first 3 lists. ... what's the best way to get the single family approved for membership in the FT? Or could the FT just consist of the 3 long lists, ignoring the one family? Or should I create a list called "List of families in long-list-3 and Vitales", even if those two groups don't have much to do with each other (aside from the fact that they're both members of the same large group called the rosids)? - Dank (push to talk) 21:29, 19 April 2023 (UTC)

If I can get away with it (and if it isn't too long), my preference for the overview article would be List of plant family names with etymologies, renamed to simply List of flowering plant families (minus the images, minus the few rows of non-flowering plants, plus an appropriate lead, plus a short descriptions-and-uses column). That long list provided the etymology and taxonomy data for every list in this series. Hi. I want to thank you for the articles about Armenian women composers. Thanks for your work. I want to translate them into Ukrainian, but I ran into a misunderstanding in the preamble.

Though her piece did not join the general šarakan liturgy, Sahakdukht's oeuvre as a whole is thought to have exerted considerable influence on subsequent šarakans; they introduced certain phrases into popular use and according to ethnomusicologist Şahan Arzruni they "helped to shape the development of the genre during subsequent centuries".

Who or what they? The subsequent šarakans? Or Sahakdukht and her brother? Or is it such a feature of the word oeuvre (like this noun is automatically plural)? Hi @Smpad, I'm so glad to hear you're translating these two articles. "They" in both instances is referring to the generally all the šarakans by Sahakdukht. We don't know enough about specific ones (since only one is extant) to make a more pointed observation than that.

Admittedly, Arzruni is rather vague in his observation so I don't have full certainty on his exact meaning, which is why I directly quoted him rather than rephrasing myself. – Aza24 (talk) 22:28, 9 May 2023 (UTC)
