Category request for deletion

Hi. It's been a while. I've never encountered this on Wikipedia before, but I found a category (and henceforth its subcategories) that I would like to request for deletion. The parent category is Category:African American sportspeople and then all of its subcategories too. My reasons for this are basically similar in nature to the few who have already discussed it on the talk page. Do you share these views? If so, could you request these categories for deletion? Arcamax Publishing

Hey, I don't know of any other way to get a hold of you. You edited out some comments I made on arcamax's entry. Now, I realize that they may have perhaps been a bit harsh. However, if you google the words spam and arcamax, you will see that the company does indeed deceive people into "subscribing" to their "newsletter". Seriously, I receive about four unsolicited emails a day from them. And I haven't been able to block them or even contact someone who would remove me from their "mailings". If you do not inform the public of their "business" practices, I will be forced to change the entry again. This time with ample citations. On Wikipedia, our job is to provide material backed by reliable and verifiable sources. I don't doubt that Arcamax Publishing may well be sending spam to you, but this edit, where it is described as "Arcamax spam is worse than a bad case of the crabs." is pure opinion. I believe that the DOS thing is a message hardcoded into Windows executables in the assumption that any OS other than Windows must be DOS. It worked all right throughout all of the 90s. In case that helps. -- Soap ^Talk/_{Contributions} 21:08, 29 June 2009 (UTC)

If an article is kept based on my vote at AfD, we have only maintained the status quo. If I delete vandalism, I have made Wikipedia less bad. If I create an article, certainly one that is DYK-eligible, I have made Wikipedia a far better encyclopedia. I've been shooting for an average of one DYK article per day, and nothing makes me happier than to be able to expand or create a new article to fill in a hole that existed in Wikipedia. I recently made changes to two articles. Ritchie Neville and Emily Scott. The insertion of text from IP address 114.73.156.242 on 28th June 2009 is not the absolute facts. There is a court case regarding this issue pending and until such time this content needs to be removed as it is liable. Please contact me about this issue. I have never edited a wiki profile before so I apologise for not getting it right the first time, I didn't understand how it works. This information however, is not correct and because of the sensitivity of the issue it needs to be removed immediately. I'm not sure that there is anything anywhere that states explicitly that an obituary confers notability. But the statement at Wikipedia:Notability (people) defining notability as coverage "significant, interesting, or unusual enough to deserve attention or to be recorded" is met by an obituary that covers the individual and their life, with the publication deeming the individual as worthy of attention. I tried my best to find sources, and this obit in The Washington Post was the source for the dates used for Love of Life. This would not be the first time that one source (or other material) contradicts another, and I will research further. For now, I think I have to stick with the published obit over a sound bite. New user. Not sure how to use this particular function, so I apologize if this is in the wrong place. This is regarding the Allison Quets entry. I have twice editing the entry requesting removal based on fairness and compassion to the children. I am not vandalizing but requesting a removal, so the children are protected and do not have to see these things when they grow. Barring removal of the entry, what about starting one for Kevin and Denise Needham, the couple who stalked Quets when she was ill and later found a corrupt attorney to help them kidnap the twins. If you look at the documents on the Quets site and court records, legal documents, it is clear the Needhams were filing to adopt the children (intent to adopt) without Allison even knowing.

The article for Postlethwaite & Netterville is largely written as an advertising piece, and not as a neutral and objective article per the WP:NPOV standard. There are also no sources, per WP:RS and WP:V that demonstrate that the company meets the Wikipedia standard for notability. HOA definitions

Alansohn, I saw your comments regarding recent edits to the page. An article is not "biased" when providing multiple viewpoints. If an earlier author put "positive" comments supporting a "pro-HOA" position and you permit only those comments to remain then you are imposing bias on the article. A number of the statements in the definition/discussion were simply downright incorrect and misleading. X-Y relations commenting on !votes moratorium.

I'd like to propose a voluntary moratorium on commenting on others people's !votes in bilateral relations AfDs. At this point, I don't think there's anything to be gained from such comments--obviously no one is convincing anyone--meanwhile, the acrimony rises and uninvolved editors are discouraged from weighing in. See this masterpiece for a prime example. So how about we just don't comment on each others' votes? This moratorium would not cover general comments, i.e. those which aren't indented under and/or in response to a specific !vote (e.g. [1]), but these should be kept to an absolute minimum. I intend invite all of the "usual suspects" to join this moratorium. I've missed someone, please invite them. Please discuss, and ideally note whether you intend to abide by this here. Thanks. Voting opens at 00:01 the following day and will continue until 31 December at 23:59, just before Auld Lang Syne. Coordinators normally serve a six-month term and are elected on an approval basis. Self-nominations are welcome. If you've thought of helping out at the Guild, or know of another editor who would make a good coordinator, please consider standing for election or nominating them here. December Blitz: This will run from 13 to 19 December, and will target all Requests. Sign up now. Drive and Blitz reports September Drive: 67 fewer articles had copy-edit templates by this month's close. Of the 27 editors who signed up, 15 copy-edited at least one article, and 124 articles were claimed for the drive. October Blitz: this ran from 18 to 24 October, and focused on articles tagged for copy-edit in July and August 2020, and all Requests. Of the 13 who signed up, 11 editors copy-edited at least one article. 21 articles were claimed for the blitz. November Drive: Of the 18 editors who signed up, 15 copy-edited at least one article, and together claimed 134 articles. At the close of the drive, 67 fewer articles were in the backlog and we had dealt with 39 requests. Academies at Englewood

I'm trying to figure out why this help desk question was asked. It seems to have something to do with a move which was immediately followed by this edit. Vchimpanzee, there had been an edit war (of a kind) as to whether Dwight Morrow High School and the Academies at Englewood should be two separate articles or if they should both be covered within a single Dwight Morrow article. Even within Wikipedia attribution is required, and this issue often arises when an article is split, as the material moved from article A to article B has no history to demonstrate its provenance. For several weeks, the articles were being shifted back and forth, renamed, split, merged and material was removed and reinserted. While this was happening, copyright issues (or the appearance thereof) may have been created. That's my understanding of what happened. The battle there was so hot and heavy that I had basically stepped away, assuming that the pieces could be picked up later; I will take a look at the articles in question when I have a chance to do so. Ludicrous?

I saw your description of my edit as ludicrous. I'm going to put aside that you are violating the rules, insulting me, not discussing, not showing good faith, and that you gave you no justification, rational or irrational, for your revert. Your revert amounts to inventing your own rules. So let me tell you a few things about musicians, particularly jazz musicians. They lead peripatetic lives. Their income relies on performing. Most jazz musicians live in New York City because it has many if not the most jazz clubs and venues. When they are not in New York, they are travelling all over the world. So there's no point in saying "he lives in" or "based in". We already have birth place in the infobox. Why do you need more than that? Are you helping a stalker? Second, because they are usually on the road, it's impossible to say where they are right now. Third, what's the point of knowing that? Fourth, it's no one's business. You don't believe in privacy? OK, well, that's a sign of the times, I guess. The generations that grew up with the internet seem not to appreciate it. It used to be a self-evident truth that privacy was a good thing. It used to be a rule at Wikipedia that we err on the side of privacy. In the future, explain your edits and avoid the insults, treat people with respect—editors and subjects of articles. In the future, click on my name so you can learn something about the subject and so you can see that I know what I'm doing.

Your pathetic excuse for deletion of sourced content was that listing his residence was an "invasion of privacy", which is based on your own manufactured ideas. Your nonsense about "helping a stalker" is belied by the fact that the sources are public and readily available to anyone, anywhere. I encourage you to find anybody to go along with you and seek to change consensus that people can only be identified by their birthplace. Your position here is patently ludicrous. You continue to break the rules and express yourself in an extremely offensive way. I'm going to tell an admin that you are obsessed with finding the location of these black jazz musicians. What your further plans are I don't know, but it certainly is weird. Birthplace in the infobox is enough. It's enough for everyone else. Why not you? The only other thing I can think of, which I have also encountered here, is you know this person or perhaps he is from your hometown and you are doing some boostering for your hometown. That's a generous view. Either way, stop being obnoxious and leave these people alone. If you are new, you have a lot to learn bout how to be a decent editor on Wikipedia.

It appears that folks have decided to delete the article based entirely on misinterpretation and misrepresentation. The material can be added into the article for Mossad. WikiCup 2021 March newsletter

Round 1 of the competition has finished; it was a high-scoring round with 21 contestants scoring more than 100 points. Everyone with a positive score moves on to Round 2, with 55 contestants qualifying. You will need to finish among the top thirty-two contestants in Round 2 if you are to qualify for Round 3. Our top scorers in Round 1 were:

• Epicgenius led the field with a featured article, nine good articles and an assortment of other submissions, specialising on buildings and locations in New York, for a total of 945 points.
• Bloom6132 was close behind with 896 points, largely gained from 71 "In the news" items, mostly recent deaths.
• ImaginesTigers, who has been editing Wikipedia for less than a year, was in third place with 711 points, much helped by bringing League of Legends to featured article status, exemplifying how bonus points can boost a contestant's score.
• Amakuru came next with 708 points, Kigali being another featured article that scored maximum bonus points.
• Ktin, new to the WikiCup, was in fifth place with 523 points, garnered from 15 DYKs and 34 "In the news" items.
• The Rambling Man scored 511 points, many from featured article candidate reviews and from football related DYKs.
• Gog the Mild, last year's runner-up, came next with 498 points, from a featured article and numerous featured article candidate reviews.
• Hog Farm, at 452, scored for a featured article, four good articles and a number of reviews.
• Le Panini, another newcomer to the WikiCup, scored 438 for a featured article and three good articles.
• Lee Vilenski, last year's champion, scored 332 points, from a featured article and various other sport-related topics.

These contestants, like all the others, now have to start again from scratch. In Round 1, contestants achieved eight featured articles, three featured lists and one featured picture, as well as around two hundred DYKs and twenty-seven ITNs. They completed 97 good article reviews, nearly double the 52 good articles they claimed. Contestants also claimed for 135 featured article and featured list candidate reviews. There is no longer a requirement to mention your WikiCup participation when undertaking these reviews.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of Round 1 but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is a good article candidate, a featured process, or something else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews.

Garden State Plaza

Alan, apart from the issue of citation styles, you have removed valid citations from the article, and replaced them with ones that are are not in any way superior. For example, in this revert of yours, among the things you did was to remove this quite valid NorthJersey.com citation, and replace it with this signup pages to Newspapers.com, which does not bear the same information. Can you please tell me why you keep doing this?

Second, with regard to WP:CITEVAR, that policy states change an article's established citation style merely on the grounds of personal preference, to make it match other articles, or without first seeking consensus for the change. Isn't this exactly what you have done? There are cite templates all over that article, you persistently remove them, and without discussion. Why is this? Do you believe there is an "established" citation style in the article? If so, what is it? What is your rationale for this? Nightscream (talk) 05:10, 1 March 2021 (UTC)

Nightscream is correct. What you're doing is the violation of CITEVAR. Bringing a single ref inline with the rest of the article's established citation style is not a violation of CITEVAR, but changing the entire citation style, as you have done, is. And frankly, taking refs that are already rendered with templates out of them is a straight-up crappy CITEVAR violation. Knock it off, and respect the established citation style of the article, or I'm bringing you to ANI. oknazevad (talk) 13:48, 1 March 2021 (UTC)

Nightscream and Oknazevad, as one of the earliest contributors to the article for Garden State Plaza some 15 years ago, I followed and helped to continue to establish the consistent citation style used in the article. Over the subsequent years, numerous editors have made additions that conflict with this consistent citation style, and other editors have made edits that consist entirely of changes to this consistent citation style, as seen in this edit. Where I have made changes, they have been as part of comprehensive edits to the article and have either been to restore the status quo ante as the reference had been inserted or to replace a non-functional source with one that works. I had checked the source before I made this edit that Nightscream questioned at which point the Internet Archive link was not working, which is the only reason I replaced it.

Changing citation styles is not only purposeless, it conflicts with policy, which is clear that no one citation style is "better" than another. Alansohn (talk) 13:57, 1 March 2021 (UTC)

Regarding the Internet Archive not working, replacing it with a signup page at Newspapers.com is not appropriate.

The fact that you edited the article years ago does not mean that there is an "established" citation style in the article, in light of the fact that the article is filled with both templated citations and non-templated citations. You simply took a citation out of a template, not any of the others in the article, an act for which there is no apparent purpose or reason.

Moreover, it has been my observation that wikification tends to favor placing bare citations into templates, and not the other way around. I have never observed bare citations referred to as a "style".

You have two editors now who have argued against your edits, and it seems that you are reverting against both of them, and in the middle of an ongoing discussion. Do you intend to continue reverting if I restore the cites in question? Or do you prefer to continue this discussion with more editors participating? Nightscream (talk) 16:36, 1 March 2021 (UTC)

Nightscream, if I have "removed" sources, it is because the exiting references were non-functional or did not cover the material they claimed to be sourcing. If an edit I made inadvertently removed a source, the rather simple solutions are to let me know or to reinsert the source.

Nightscream, I confirmed that the Internet Archive version of the link is working and reinserted the reference in the format in which it was added to the article, with the replacement of the archived version of the link for the original link, which is no longer functioning. Again, if you believe that this malicious edit, which removed extensive sourced content, is part of "an ongoing discussion", there is something seriously wrong here. Alan, I appreciate your help. It may be that someone just decided to make a general reference to the "mill pond" that Thomas Eaton originally used for his mill, but I'm almost certain this is now Wampum Lake Park. If you go to Google maps, and go to Wampum Lake, you'll see where the lake is constricted and the flows into Wampum Brook. That constriction is in fact the small water fall. • Sfratini33, This source from a book dated in 2013 connects Eaton and what was known as Mill Brook to the Wampum Brook, but it doesn't say that the 1670 grist mill was in the present-day park. Alan, The problem is that "Mill Pond" will confuse people since this is not an existing term used in the town or or the map. There is but one waterfall in Eatontown. I will send an email to the Eatontown Historic Society and see if they can provide some verification. Idea for education templates: consolidate those for lower population counties

Something that occurred to me is that community colleges and public library systems should be on countywide education templates.

For lower population counties I've tried combining the high school and school district templates into a single template: See Template:Education in Cape May County, New Jersey (as Cape May County only has five public high schools and one private high school with articles and the reader can pick those out: one can also make nested templates showing high schools within the template)

For larger population counties (maybe 10 or 15 or more high schools?) one can have education in ... templates (school districts + community colleges) and have high schools be an offshoot with their own templates (I'm wondering about Camden, Mercer, and some of the north Jersey counties could have separated templates?). • WhisperToMe, after I saw your message, I was looking at the Bergen County template, which has 68 public and private high schools, and that can certainly stand on its own. Smaller / more rural counties can make do with consolidated templates. The current templates probably started under the assumption that every county should have a high school template and a separate school district template, but those counties might be better served with a combined template that also includes community colleges, or perhaps library systems.

WikiCup 2021 May newsletter

The second round of the 2021 WikiCup has now finished; it was a high-scoring round and contestants needed 61 points to advance to Round 3. There were some impressive efforts in the round, with the top eight contestants all scoring more than 400 points. A large number of the points came from the 12 featured articles and the 110 good articles achieved in total by contestants, as well as the 216 good article reviews they performed; the GAN backlog drive and the stay-at-home imperative during the COVID-19 pandemic may have been partially responsible for these impressive figures.

Our top scorers in Round 2 were:

• The Rambling Man, with 2963 points from three featured articles, 20 featured article reviews, 37 good articles, 73 good article reviews, as well as 22 DYKs.
• Epicgenius, with 1718 points from one featured article, 29 good articles, 16 DYKs and plenty of bonus points.
• Bloom6132, with 990 points from 13 DYKs and 64 "In the news" items, mostly recent deaths.
• Hog Farm, with 834 points from two featured articles, five good articles, 14 featured article reviews and 15 good article reviews.
• Gog the Mild, with 524 points from two featured articles and four featured article reviews.
• Lee Vilenski, with 501 points from one featured article, three good articles, six featured article reviews and 25 good article reviews.
• Sammi Brie, with 485 points from four good articles, eight good article reviews and 27 DYKs, on US radio and television stations.
• Ktin, with 436 points from four good articles, seven DYKs and 11 "In the news" items.

Montague Township school docs

Montague Township School District had quite a turbulent history in the 2010s related to the cancellation of its send/receive with Port Jervis School District (switched to High Point Regional High School) and then attempts to get that back.

Sadly it seems they deleted a bunch of primary source documents on their official site. Happily I found some in Google cache and others in Document Cloud, but it might be good to save copies to your HD.

• Transportation study (on whether students should be bussed to Port Jervis or to High Point HS
• Feasibility of the termination of the send/receive agreement

Diminishing SHP alumni

Not sure why you are so adamant about deleting a Seton Hall Prep alumni that won the 2020 "Emerging Writer's Award. I taught Chris Cooper at SHP in 2005, I was the honors English teacher Antonio Defiore, and any accomplished writer should be acknowledged. Although I can't find an article where he talks about "high school," his linkedin profile clearly shows he attended Seton Hall Prep and graduated in 2006.

I don't think a link to his professional linkedin profile should need to be included because you're eager to discredit this writer. There are other "alumni" that do not have any verifiable links to them attending SHP. Carterk99, one of the consistent guidelines for adding notables to such lists is that each entry should have a Wikipedia article *AND* a reliable / verifiable source establishing a connection to the school (or place). Seton Hall Prep has about 200 or so graduates each year for which it is possible to verify that they attended the school, but we don't list every alumnus. The ones we list are those with both Wikipedia articles that establish notability and sources that establish attendance at Seton Hall Prep. Chris Cooper doesn't yet meet that standard and that's why he has been removed, just as his entry was removed (by another user) from Chris Cooper (disambiguation). Hi, I was just wondering how an award given to a school 24 years ago is relevant now? ("For the 1996–97 school year, Immaculate Heart Academy was recognized ...") We are all familiar with the ways a school can be radically changed when the top people are changed, either for the better or for the worse. I find that the article was trying to promote the school by emphasizing outdated accomplishments ad nauseum (without mentioning academic programs). It's not like the Nobel Prize, as a person is not an institution. It's more like the Nobel Peace Prize, which basically says, "we think you are really cool right now. Look at Obama. Or some of the despots who have received it. They were not devoted to peace following the award. However, I am only speculating, as are you. I'd like to see your sources as well. We are both speculating. As for "the Nobel Peace Prize is not encyclopedic", you are engaging in some tenuous synthesis there. Are you a lawyer, or just a northern New Jerseyan? WP is beset with cleverly-written heavy promotion emanating from the NYC and northern NJ region. The creators of such promotion all act like lawyers, going head to head with other Wikipedians in order to prevail, ignoring the goals of the project. Articles about racial segregation and desegregation in NJ schools

Do you have an account on JStor or are you able to get on the Wikipedia Library? I found articles about racial segregation and desegregation in NJ schools (northern Jersey by 1948 pretty much had integrated schools but south and central Jersey still had segregation) WhisperToMe (talk) 22:01, 24 May 2021 (UTC)

WhisperToMe, I've been catching upon your edits and looking at a of the school districts that had segregated educational systems into the late 1940s. I reverted the disruptive edit manually. Thank you for your assistance and help. Dare I make a mistake about something and everyone crawls out of the woodwork to admonish me, but this persistent disruptive behavior from this person in Florida just gets away with it. He is blocked from his non static ip addresses until the 21, he is probably using a Tracfone or a friend of his computer. Both geolocate to same area of Florida, and it is the exact same thing he changes. Probably has OCD. This guy must be blocked. Doriden (talk) 19:03, 17 June 2021 (UTC)

I see that person disrupted the FDNY page the other day and you reverted it. It's the same person with the roaming up from Florida who is suspended until the 21st of June. Disruptive Editing

Mr.Sohn, if you take a look at that person's history with Wikipedia it goes way back with disruptive editing behavior until 2018, using a 173 ip address and the other one that is currently blocked until the 27 June. WikiCup 2021 July newsletter

The third round of the 2021 WikiCup has now come to an end. Each of the sixteen contestants who made it into the fourth round had at least 294 points, and our top six scorers all had over 600 points. They were:

• The Rambling Man, with 1825 points from 3 featured articles, 44 featured article reviews, 14 good articles, 30 good article reviews and 10 DYKs. In addition, he completed a 34-article good topic on the EFL Championship play-offs.
• Epicgenius, a New York specialist, with 1083 points from 2 featured article reviews, 18 good articles, 30 DYKs and plenty of bonus points.
• Bloom6132, with 869 points from 11 DYKs, all with bonus points, and 54 "In the news" items, mostly covering people who had recently died.
• Gog the Mild, with 817 points from 3 featured articles on historic battles in Europe, 5 featured article reviews and 3 good articles.
• Hog Farm, with 659 points from 2 featured articles and 2 good articles on American Civil War battles, 18 featured article reviews, 2 good articles, 6 good article reviews and 4 DYKs.
• BennyOnTheLoose, a snooker specialist and new to the Cup, with 647 points from a featured article, 2 featured article reviews, 6 good articles, 6 good article reviews and 3 DYKs.

In round three, contestants achieved 19 featured articles, 7 featured lists, 106 featured article reviews, 72 good articles, 1 good topic, 62 good article reviews, 165 DYKs and 96 ITN items. We enter the fourth round with scores reset to zero; any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them (one contestant in round 3 lost out because of this). When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met.

Hello, Alansohn. Could you tell me why did you change "less than one-hundred" to "fewer than 100" in the article Vera Mae Green? According to MOS:Principle of minimal change, "Quotations must be verifiably attributed, and the wording of the quoted text should be faithfully reproduced."

• A few thoughts, Bhdshoes2 (with apologies to Alansohn for appropriating this talk page--I'm happy to copy this and move it, should that be the best course). First, it's clear you've contributed a lot of good content; I especially liked the section on artists who painted on the Rahway River. But, though I am not interested in sifting through a lot of previous edits, I've found enough that do have issues with promotional tone, and am surprised that you're not aware of this. That alone makes me concerned about some form of COI. If you'd like, I can pull up the diffs, but I've already edited a few examples, so it shouldn't be difficult to discuss those. At this point, to me, the "this reads like promo" sogn on the Rahway page just looks like vandalism. There is nothing on there that reads like promo. I feel like you purged it all out already so sign should n come down. I did change "clubs" to "community orgs" though.

• Perhaps it can be removed, though I'd suggest it be done by someone else. This isn't the place to work it out, but as I noted in an edit summary, I don't think the garden club or friends of the library are appropriate to include in a Wikipedia article.   • On second thought, I really hadn't looked at the lede until now. I'd suggest a consensus on whether it's appropriate for the second and third sentences of a Wikipedia article to be "Rahway was named the 2020 "Great Downtown" designee on the APA's list of "Great Places in New Jersey."[18] Rahway was also named the #2 Best Small Town Arts Scene in the country by USA Today in 2021.[19]" That really has advert written all over it. The first claim is based on a dubious WP:RELIABLE; the second looks more solid, but is rather glaring in the intro. Bhdshoes2, I find it troubling that an experienced editor doesn't notice or acknowledge this area of concern. At this point, I'd welcome Alansohn's input, and that of other experienced editors. Hmm. I mean, to me, there should indeed be explanatory notes of significance in the lede like "named the best" this or that if it is a significant publication. It gives facts of significance. I also feel adding local organizations of longstanding does belong in an encyclopedia entry on a place. Is there a way to copy and paste this whole discussion to the Rahway talk page? As I'm sure that we would all agree that 98-99.9% of the article is not even borderline promotional, let's raise the issues at the talk page, discuss them dispassionately and reach consensus on them one at a time and update the article accordingly. ‎Freeholdman12's drive to change "Transportation" to "Infrastructure"

I see his point, but he seems to be focused solely on adding the health care system. However, according to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soft_infrastructure , he should also add information on each town's financial system, the education system, the system of government, law enforcement, and emergency services. Most of these articles already have such information in separate sections, so if is drive is truly to create informative hard and soft infrastructure sections (instead of just focusing on health care), he should try to merge them in. Otherwise, perhaps he should back off. I'm bringing this to your attention as the most-involved editor of NJ municipality articles - perhaps a discussion among other editors is needed. • Famartin, it would seem that the relevant guideline that would be more relevant here would be WP:USCITY, which does recommend including healthcare and transportation in an infrastructure section. It's not a policy or a requirement, but it does offer some guidance for editors. I'm not sure that Soft infrastructure does the same. WikiCup 2021 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished with over 500 points being required to qualify for the final round. It was a hotly competitive round with two contestants, The Rambling Man and Epicgenius, each scoring over 3000 points, and six contestants scoring over 1000. All but one of the finalists achieved one or more FAs during the round, the exception being Bloom6132 who demonstrated that 61 "in the news" items produces an impressive number of points. Other contestants who made it to the final are Gog the Mild, Lee Vilenski, BennyOnTheLoose, Amakuru and Hog Farm. However, all their points are now swept away and everyone starts afresh in the final round.

Round 4 saw the achievement of 18 featured articles and 157 good articles. Bilorv scored for a 25-article good topic on Black Mirror but narrowly missed out on qualifying for the final round. There was enthusiasm for FARs, with 89 being performed, and there were 63 GARs and around 100 DYKs during the round. As we start round 5, we say goodbye to the eight competitors who didn't quite make it to the final round; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia, and we hope you will join us again next year. For other contestants, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. September 2021 Guild of Copy Editors newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors September 2021 Newsletter Hello and welcome to the September GOCE newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since June 2021.                  Current and upcoming events September Drive: Our current backlog-elimination drive is open until 23:59 on 30 September (UTC) and is open to all copy editors. Sign up today! Drive and Blitz reports June Blitz: From 20 to 26 June, 6 participating editors claimed 16 copy edits, focusing on requests and articles tagged in March and April. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. July Drive: Almost 575,000 words of articles were copy edited for this event. Of the 24 people who signed up, 18 copyedited at least one article. Final results and awards are listed here. August Blitz: From 15 to 21 August, we copy edited articles tagged in April and May 2021 and requests. 9 participating editors completed 17 copy edits on the blitz. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. Other news June election: Jonesey95 was chosen to continue as lead coordinator, assisted by Dhtwiki, Tenryuu, and Miniapolis. New maintenance template added to our project scope: After a short discussion in June, we added {{cleanup tense}} to the list of maintenance templates that adds articles to the Guild's copy editing backlog categories. This change added 198 articles, spread over 97 months of backlog, to our queue. We processed all of those articles except for those from the three or four most recent months during the July backlog elimination drive (Here's a link to a "tense" discussion during the drive). Progress report: As of 18:26, 24 September 2021 (UTC), GOCE copyeditors have processed 468 requests since 1 January and there were 60 requests awaiting completion on the Requests page. The backlog of articles tagged for copy-editing stood at 433 (see monthly progress graph above). Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! 2020 Census statistics in New Jersey

Hello Alansohn, hope you are doing well. I was getting ready to contact you in short order regarding 2020 detailed Census statistical updates for New Jersey's 21 counties, going alphabetically with just two more counties left, (just finished Union County, only Warren County remains) - but in the meantime, looks like we stumbled over each other at the Union County page, prompting my correspondence with you slightly prematurely relative to my expectation in time.

First of all, we both know very well after doing this for a long time that it would be an editor's burden to gain consensus to retain material on a page rather than to remove obsolete material. I believe it's safe to say that most editors would consider it a non-starter to include sorely obsolete detailed 2000 statistics in the year 2021 (and now nearly 2022).

What I was hoping you were indeed planning to do however (and was actually going to ask you soon, as mentioned above) would be to perform once again the same magic now for 2020 detailed stats that you did a decade ago when you developed the 2010 auto-template of detailed demographic statistics for the 2010 census. Much more detailed info is now readily available, including for same-sex couples, foreign-born residents, etc. Best, Castncoot (talk) 01:51, 17 October 2021 (UTC)

• Castncoot, I am still working myself -- and hoping to work with others -- to develop a systematic process to gather data from the 2020 census corresponding to the data available for 2010 and 2000, and to allow this data to be added to articles for counties and municipalities. I still don't know what should be done with 2000 data and I have arguments both for and against retention of the information, though I think that there is a strong argument that a string of data from three censuses provides context as to changes and trends in a county or municipality. But until we have 2020 data in the articles, it seems premature to be removing the only other contextual information we have and leaving only 2010 census data present. • • The 2020 data is available now, notwithstanding the delay induced by Covid. I'm happy to help you procure the 2020 data systematically if you need my help with that particular task Alansohn, but I really feel that this is a case of too many cooks spoiling the broth and truthfully, the project would be best served by you taking individual control of that process at this time. In fact, that's precisely why I created a shell section for 2020 on each county page, before reaching out to you about taking over from that point. The only significant contextual data to be gained from 2020 at this time any longer is the total population of each jurisdiction at Census 2000 (please keep in mind that byte space is valuable real estate for each article), and I have specifically continued to retain that data in the lead section. WikiCup 2021 November newsletter

The WikiCup is over for another year and the finalists can relax! Our Champion this year is The Rambling Man (submissions), who amassed over 5000 points in the final round, achieving 8 featured articles and almost 500 reviews. It was a very competitive round; seven of the finalists achieved over 1000 points in the round (enough to win the 2019 contest), and three scored over 3000 (enough to win the 2020 event). Our 2021 finalists and their scores were:

3. Amakuru (submissions) with 3197 points
4. Epicgenius (submissions) with 1611 points

All those who reached the final round will win awards. The following special awards will be made based on high performance in particular areas of content creation and review. Awards will be handed out in the next few days.

• Gog the Mild (submissions) wins the featured topic prize, for 13 articles in a featured topic in round 5.

• The Rambling Man (submissions) wins the good topic prize, for 86 articles in good topics in round 5.

• Epicgenius (submissions) wins the DYK prize, for 30 did you know articles in round 3 and 105 overall.
• Bloom6132 (submissions) wins the ITN prize, for 71 in the news articles in round 1 and 284 overall.

Congratulations to everyone who participated in this year's WikiCup, whether they made it to the final round or not, and particular congratulations to the newcomers to the WikiCup, some of whom did very well. Wikipedia has benefitted greatly from the quality creations, expansions and improvements made, and the numerous reviews performed. Thanks to all who have taken part and helped out with the competition, not forgetting User:Jarry1250, who runs the scoring bot.

December 2021 GOCE Newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors December 2021 Newsletter Hello and welcome to the December GOCE newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since September 2021.                  Current and upcoming events Election time: Our end-of-year election of coordinators opened for nominations on 1 December and will close on 15 December at 23:59 (UTC). Voting opens at 00:01 the following day and will continue until 31 December at 23:59, just before "Auld Lang Syne". Coordinators normally serve a six-month term and are elected on an approval basis. Self-nominations are welcome. If you've thought of helping out at the Guild, or know of another editor who would make a good coordinator, please consider standing for election or nominating them here. December Blitz: We have scheduled a week-long copy-editing blitz for 12 to 18 December. Sign up now! Drive and Blitz reports September Drive: Almost 400,000 words of articles were copy edited for this event. Of the 27 people who signed up, 21 copyedited at least one article. Other news It is with great sadness that we report the death on 19 November of Twofingered Typist, who was active with the Guild almost daily for the past several years. His contributions long exceeded the thresholds for the Guild's highest awards, and he had a hand in innumerable good and featured article promotions as a willing collaborator. Twofingered Typist also served as a Guild coordinator from July 2019 to June 2021. He is sorely missed by the Wikipedia community. Progress report: As of 30 November, GOCE copyeditors have completed 619 requests in 2021 and there were 51 requests awaiting completion on the Requests page. The backlog stood at 946 articles tagged for copy-editing (see monthly progress graph above). Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you!
