Auto category TOC

The purpose of the table of contents is to reduce the amount of scrolling the reader has to do to navigate between the sections of a page.

I'm guessing you were viewing the page on a big screen device, so you were able to navigate between sections without it effortlessly anyways. If that is the case, please keep in mind that not all readers out there have devices with large displays or view Wikipedia on them like you do. There may be viewers out there reading it on a small laptop, on a tablet, mobile phone, etc. In fact, mobile phone users make up a sizable share of the Wikipedia readers out there.

You may find the category TOC box useless, but there will surely be readers out there on mobile phones who won't find it to be so.

Additionally, the documentation of the Auto category TOC template (which you can find here) itself states that it may be used on categories ranging from 101 up to 1200 links.

In response to your other query, when you make a bold edit, and it is reverted, the onus is on you to start a discussion on the article talk page about why the edit makes sense / should be restored etc, and not on the other editor after restoring your edit back again which you hadn't gotten consensus for in the first place. See Wikipedia:BOLD, revert, discuss cycle for a good explanation of this. Furthermore, when your edits become reverted by multiple other editors (and you are the only one in support of your edits), then it becomes clear that the consensus is against your edits. You will need to discuss on the article's talk page to establish a consensus with those other editors.
