Tech News: 2023-28
Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- The Section-level Image Suggestions feature has been deployed on seven Wikipedias (Portuguese, Russian, Indonesian, Catalan, Hungarian, Finnish and Norwegian Bokmål). The feature recommends images for articles on contributors' watchlists that are a good match for individual sections of those articles.
- Global abuse filters have been enabled on all Wikimedia projects, except English and Japanese Wikipedias (who opted out). This change was made following a global request for comments. [1]
- Special:BlockedExternalDomains is a new tool for administrators to help fight spam. It provides a clearer interface for blocking plain domains (and their subdomains), is more easily searchable, and is faster for the software to process for each edit on the wiki. It does not support regex (for complex cases), nor URL path-matching, nor the MediaWiki:Spam-whitelist, but otherwise it replaces most of the functionalities of the existing MediaWiki:Spam-blacklist. There is a Python script to help migrate all simple domains into this tool, and more feature details, within the tool's documentation. It is available at all wikis except for Meta-wiki, Commons, and Wikidata. [2]
- The WikiEditor extension was updated. It includes some of the most frequently used features of wikitext editing. In the past, many of its messages could only be translated by administrators, but now all regular translators on translatewiki can translate them. Please check the state of WikiEditor localization into your language, and if the "Completion" for your language shows anything less than 100%, please complete the translation. See a more detailed explanation.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 11 July. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 12 July. It will be on all wikis from 13 July (calendar).
- The default protocol of Special:LinkSearch and API counterparts has changed from http to both http and https. [3]
- Special:LinkSearch and its API counterparts will now search for all of the URL provided in the query. It used to be only the first 60 characters. This feature was requested fifteen years ago. [4]
Future changes
- There is an experiment with a ChatGPT plugin. This is to show users where the information is coming from when they read information from Wikipedia. It has been tested by Wikimedia Foundation staff and other Wikimedians. Soon all ChatGPT plugin users can use the Wikipedia plugin. This is the same plugin which was mentioned in Tech News 2023/20. [5]
- There is an ongoing discussion on a proposed Third-party resources policy. The proposal will impact the use of third-party resources in gadgets and userscripts. Based on the ideas received so far, policy includes some of the risks related to user scripts and gadgets loading third-party resources, some best practices and exemption requirements such as code transparency and inspectability. Your feedback and suggestions are warmly welcome until July 17, 2023 on on the policy talk page.

odd stuf
Hi, I pinged you here Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard#Suspicious_edits about a different editor. Wondering if also related, I was thinking as the other editor stuck the comments, but now I see the editor was striking the comments of a blocked account. Might be another related socking issue, or maybe I am just confused. But the edit history is totally focused on China and also engaging in strange edits. Thanks! Possible continued proxying by Shortur
Just spotted this edit which was made "per an email request". I can't determine whether the email was sent before or after the block, but it's probably a good idea to shut off email for Shortur, Tularetrain, and all the others to preempt any further attempts at email proxying. The arbitration case Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/AlisonW has been closed, and the final decision is viewable at the case page. The following remedy has been enacted:
- For failure to meet the conduct standards expected of an administrator, AlisonW's administrative user rights are removed. She may regain them at any time via a successful request for adminship.

Main page images
Given you asked about how to deal with main page images, in case you have any remaining uncertainties, here's how that works:
- If the item isn't on the main page yet, and it's not imminent to be moved to the main page, simply swap images (just as you've done). Protection will be applied automatically.
- If it is already on the main page, you need to follow a few simple steps before swapping an image:
- Add the image to Wikipedia:Main Page/Commons media protection (there's a link to this page from the "Main Page toolbox" on Errors, or the other way to get to this page is from the DYK admin instructions)
- Wait until the image is protected by checking on Commons whether you can edit it (I think the bot runs every 10 minutes at 00, 10, etc)
- Only then swap the image over
I hope that's useful. Schwede66 22:50, 16 July 2023 (UTC)
- Much appreciated, thanks. RoySmith (talk) 23:13, 16 July 2023 (UTC)

Recent changes
- We are now serving 1% of all global user traffic from Kubernetes (you can read more technical details). We are planning to increment this percentage regularly. You can follow the progress of this work.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 18 July. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 19 July. It will be on all wikis from 20 July (calendar).
- MediaWiki system messages will now look for available local fallbacks, instead of always using the default fallback defined by software. This means wikis no longer need to override each language on the fallback chain separately. For example, English Wikipedia doesn't have to create
en-ca
anden-gb
subpages with a transclusion of the base pages anymore. This makes it easier to maintain local overrides. [6] - The
action=growthsetmentorstatus
API will be deprecated with the new MediaWiki version. Bots or scripts calling that API should use theaction=growthmanagementorlist
API now. [7]

SmallCat dispute case opened
You recently offered a statement in a request for arbitration. The Arbitration Committee has accepted that request for arbitration and an arbitration case has been opened at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/SmallCat dispute. Evidence that you wish the arbitrators to consider should be added to the evidence subpage, at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/SmallCat dispute/Evidence. Please add your evidence by August 4, 2023, which is when the evidence phase closes. You can also contribute to the case workshop subpage, Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/SmallCat dispute/Workshop. Pursue a request
I too had suspicion on Suthasianhistorian8 when I saw his edits in Hinduism in Canada similar to other editors but before I could figure out how to create a request and what all policies should be implemented, I realized someone else submitted request Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Suthasianhistorian8. Since the request was closed as submitter was possibly sock, is it possible to still reopen it to have a check ran on the accused accounts? Supmananger (talk) 06:48, 21 July 2023 (UTC)
- What is even more weird is that even though Suthasianhistorian8 himself claims that other accounts could possibly be sock, he doesn’t pursue to report them. There is something here to be looked at all accounts accused in the investigation report. Supmananger (talk) 07:18, 21 July 2023 (UTC)
- I don't mind having my account checked. It will give peace of mind to the filers and stop them from levying any further false accusations of sockpuppetry against me. Southasianhistorian8 (talk) 06:51, 22 July 2023 (UTC)
Cool Page
Good Morning,
I recently created an account here on Wikipedia, and after reading the checkuser page, thought I'd reach out and say that your flag on your talk page Is great. Thank you!
My friends in the military are working to support Ukraine and its great to have that flag flying around in the wiki realm. Señor Jakob (talk) 11:41, 22 July 2023 (UTC)
- It always seems a bit odd to me that socks frequently post to the Talk pages of the editors who blocked them. See Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Knowledge Updater 1999. I don't know if you want to run a check, not just to confirm but to look for others as this one slipped under the radar. The blocked master and socks are all stale, so I'm not sure where it would get you.--Bbb23 (talk) 12:54, 22 July 2023 (UTC)
- Socks gonna sock. RoySmith (talk) 15:35, 22 July 2023 (UTC)

- Thanks for the note. I see SFR already has it protected again. RoySmith (talk) 22:19, 24 July 2023 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) I gave it another year. Was up in the air about longer, but as it's not BLP or other contentious stuff it won't hurt to see if it starts up again, which it probably will. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 22:20, 24 July 2023 (UTC)

Hi, i am from bnwiki. I got a message from User:DeloarAkram, he is saying that he is unable to edit on enwiki, he said he requested here. Then he also sent an email to [email protected] 14 days ago for IP block exemption but didn’t received any answer. Could you please take a look (If you can't, do you anyone who can help here?). Your GA nomination of Leaders of the World
Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Leaders of the World you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Your GA nomination of Leaders of the World
The article Leaders of the World you nominated as a good article has failed ; see Talk:Leaders of the World for reasons why the nomination failed. If or when these points have been taken care of, you may apply for a new nomination of the article. Message delivered by ChristieBot, on behalf of RoySmith -- RoySmith (talk) 14:22, 4 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Mike Christie and Bruxton: I assume the above message was delivered erroneously, since the review is still in progress. RoySmith (talk) 14:25, 4 August 2023 (UTC)
- I think it's probably because the article was moved. I'll take a look when I'm back to my computer and see. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 14:28, 4 August 2023 (UTC)
- Rats! I am sure we will get it sorted. There was discussion about title and I suggested a change. Next time we will know to only move the page after the review. Bruxton (talk) 17:18, 4 August 2023 (UTC)
- I just looked through the code and I can see where I would need to do some extra checking to catch this situation. I'm not sure I completely understand what happened; this isn't the first time an article has been moved during a GA. Next time I set up the test environment I'll include a test for this. In the meantime once the article passes under the new name I think the bot should handle it correctly. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 21:20, 4 August 2023 (UTC)

- Special:BlockedExternalDomains is a new tool that allows easier blocking of plain domains (and their subdomains). It does not support regex (for complex cases), URL path-matching, or the MediaWiki:Spam-whitelist. (T337431)

Please refrain from associating the names "Adom" (artist) or "Adom" (musician) with anything even remotely connected to Boston. Kindly revert to using "Anton Cosmo" and "Anthony Cosmo." I am the actual artist known as Adom, and I strongly prefer not to have the name "Adom" associated with Boston or Anton Cosmo. If you have the capability to make this adjustment, I would greatly appreciate it. ACmuisc (talk) 16:50, 8 August 2023 (UTC)
DYK Queue 7
Hello RoySmith,
Would it be possible for you to change '...garrison were' to '...garrison was' in the first hook of DYK Queue 7 (Dolwyddelan Castle)? I'm the nominator, and although I thought either 'were' or 'was' could be used in this context in British English I've done some reading and 'was' would be more usual here. It's a small tweak, but I'd appreciate it. Thank you, A.D.Hope (talk) 08:42, 10 August 2023 (UTC)
- Done. For future reference, better to make these kinds of requests at WT:DYK because more people watch that. RoySmith (talk) 14:04, 10 August 2023 (UTC)
Expired range block
Hi RoySmith, your year-long block on 119.73.112.0/24 just expired, and within a day the sockmaster is already at it again:
Any chance the range block can be extended? Thanks, ☿ Apaugasma (talk ☉) 14:03, 4 August 2023 (UTC)
- Sigh. I'll take a look, thanks for the heads up. RoySmith (talk) 14:19, 4 August 2023 (UTC)
- Hmmm, there's a lot of other stuff happening on that range, so I'm hesitant to reblock until we see how things progress. Is the disruption targeted enough that semi-protection of some pages would be sufficient? RoySmith (talk) 14:35, 4 August 2023 (UTC)
- In my experience, the /24 is rarely used by anyone else in this case (I know this master well). No, the disruption is rarely targeted enough for page protection: they're something of a wikidragon, going from page to page like a gnome but often making significant changes. That said, I think it is wise to wait this out for a while and see what the range does before reblocking. ☿ Apaugasma (talk ☉) 15:13, 4 August 2023 (UTC)
- Hi RoySmith, after one week what I've seen is ~50 edits, of which almost all were made by the relevant sock master: the edits are in the same topic areas (historical Islamic figures, Islamism and Islamic extremism), have the same type of focus (very often transliteration or moving sources outside of the lead/infobox), as well as the giveaway noted on cuwiki on 30 January 2023. The single one edit that probably was not made by the sock master was spam, so everything considered I think that blocking the range would be a net positive. ☿ Apaugasma (talk ☉) 10:23, 11 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Apaugasma I'm unable to dive into this at the moment. Please file an SPI report and somebody will take a look. RoySmith (talk) 16:04, 11 August 2023 (UTC)

Adom (artist)
Hi Roy, are you able to change the article name back to Anton Cosmo? The article was named Anton Cosmo for over 10 years then the publicist moved it to Adom (artist).I understand the page is deleted and redirected. However it is effecting google the knowledge panel for Adom by having the name redirected. Please understand that Adom has nothing to do with the band Boston so this should be an easy task for an admin. If you can't, maybe you can help find a qualified person to do this? Appreciate the help! 74.78.194.27 (talk) 06:09, 14 August 2023 (UTC)
