Page Curation newsletter

Hey J Milburn. I'm dropping you a note because you used to (or still do!) patrol new pages. This is just to let you know that we've deployed and developed Page Curation, which augments and supersedes Special:NewPages - there are a lot of interesting new features :). There's some help documentation here if you want to familiarise yourself with the system and start using it. If you find any bugs or have requests for new features, let us know here. Thanks! Hello

You're one of the best at image checking; can you quickly go through this article and access whether or not the images are fine? The article will soon be up for FA candidacy and I wanted an image review beforehand. Bruce Campbell (talk) 01:22, 28 September 2012 (UTC)

are new reviewers welcome at GAN?

Doesn't feel like it as Malleus as gone out of his way to ridicule my GA reviews. I guess that only long time editors are welcome. Sorry. MathewTownsend (talk) 01:43, 30 September 2012 (UTC)

About a year ago you reviewed Baby Not on Board for GA but at that time it failed. I have fixed your issues with it and improved the article over all and I have also nominated it one more. So please review since most of the corrections were made by your criteria. --Pedro J. the rookie 15:48, 30 September 2012 (UTC)

WikiCup 2012 September newsletter

We're over half way through the final, and so it is less than a month until we know for certain our 2012 WikiCup champion. Conradh na Gaeilge Grapple X (submissions) currently leads, followed by Canada Sasata (submissions), Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) and Scotland Casliber (submissions). However, we have no one resembling a breakaway leader, and so the competition is a long way from over. Next month's newsletter will feature a list of our winners (who are not necessarily only the finalists) and keep your eyes open for an article on the WikiCup in a future edition of The Signpost. The leaders are already on a par with last year's winners, but a long way from the huge scores seen in 2010. That said, a repeat of the competition from 2010 seems unlikely.

It is good to see that three-quarters of our finalists have already scored bonus points this round. This shows that, contrary to criticism that the WikiCup has received in the past, the competition does not merely incentivise the writing of trivial articles; instead, our top competitors are still spending their time contributing to high-importance articles, and bringing them to a high standard. This does a great service to the encyclopedia and its readers. Thank you, and good work!

The planning for next year's WikiCup is ongoing. Some straw polls have been opened concerning the scoring, and you can now sign up for next year's competition. As ever, if you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Article Revision

Hi there,

Thank you for taking time and review my article. I really just wanted to know where I stand with this piece and how far do I still have to go. I am taking notes. With the references. The entire section of evolution and many other sections are from a single website so I didn't bother to add a reference after each sentence. Can you show me how to do it properly. Apart from that I know how to work on the rest. Again, thank you very much for your precious time, maybe I'll write a better article next time. :D --RexRowan(Ninja signal) 19:19, 3 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi, if you get the time at some point, I'd appreciate a few comments on the Mauritius Blue Pigeon and Broad-billed Parrot articles. No rush, since they're also waiting for copyediting. I'll wait with the Red Rail, since I recall there might be a bit more info in some of my sources that could be added. The other two are pretty much "complete", so to speak. Joseph Grimaldi peer review

Hi JM, hope your well. I have the above up for peer review and just wondered if you could give the images a quick going over. All of the current images are new and have been uploaded by me. I deleted all of the previous ones as some of them had issues, and weren't really relevent. The current ones are all free and within PD, but I just want to make sure before going ahead to FAC. WikiCup 2012 October newsletter

The 2012 WikiCup has come to a close; congratulations to Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions), our 2012 champion! Cwmhiraeth joins our exclusive club of previous winners: Dreamafter (2007), jj137 (2008), Durova (2009), Sturmvogel 66 (2010) and Hurricanehink (2011). Our final standings were as follows:

  1. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions)
  2. Canada Sasata (submissions)
  3. Conradh na Gaeilge Grapple X (submissions)
  4. Scotland Casliber (submissions)
  5. New York City Muboshgu (submissions)
  6. Wisconsin Miyagawa (submissions)
  7. Minnesota Ruby2010 (submissions)
  8. Michigan Dana Boomer (submissions)

Prizes for first, second, third and fourth will be awarded, as will prizes for all those who reached the final eight. Every participant who scored in the competition will receive a ribbon of participation. In addition to the prizes based on placement, the following special prizes will be awarded based on high performance in particular areas of content creation. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, the prize is awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round.

Awards will be handed out in the coming days; please bear with us! This year's competition also saw fantastic contributions in all rounds, from newer Wikipedians contributing their first good or featured articles, right up to highly experienced Wikipedians chasing high scores and contributing to topics outside of their usual comfort zones. It would be impossible to name all of the participants who have achieved things to be proud of, but well done to all of you, and thanks! Wikipedia has certainly benefited from the work of this year's WikiCup participants.

Next year's WikiCup will begin in January. Currently, discussions and polls are open, and all contributions are welcome. You can also sign up for next year's competition. There will be no further newsletters this year, although brief notes may be sent out in December to remind everyone about the upcoming competition. It's been a pleasure to work with you all, and we hope to see you all in January! J Milburn (talkemail) and The ed17 (talkemail) 00:29, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

The WikiCup

At the start of the year I did not know that good articles and featured articles existed but I liked writing new articles on obscure creatures so I joined the WikiCup. You reviewed my first attempt at a good article and that was a learning experience. Another learning experience was joining with Casliber in the FAC for Jackdaw, after seeing an invitation to cooperate with him on his user page. And when I tried my first solo FAC, Bivalvia, Sassata was the main reviewer and I learned many of the finer requirements for FA. So I can be said to have benefited much during the year from others involved in the Cup.

My family had wanted to organise an autumn half term get-together for me and my husband, my brothers and their wives a long time ago and I had agreed despite some misgivings about the timing. We left home on 27th October and I had previously given instructions to my daughter on how to add any late DYKs to my submissions, not an easy thing for someone to do who is not used to editing Wikipedia. I see she has not got it quite right for three of them, but the matter is academic now. Anyway, thank you for organising an enjoyable competition. Some of my strategies did not work out but the outcome was very satisfactory. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 10:21, 3 November 2012 (UTC)

Hi J, I just wanted to ask you a quick favour. Can you look over this? I wanted to add it to Stanley Holloway which is an FA, but wanted to be sure of the image and its licensing first. The image was kicked out at FAC earlier this year on the grounds of its "non-relevance" to the article, but the more I look at it the more it aggrieves me that it is not in there. The image is an extremely rare one, author unknown, taken in about 1902, and there is ample room in the article to accommodate it. Any thoughts? -- CassiantoTalk 11:15, 11 November 2012 (UTC)

No problems. I thought I would better check first. I uploaded it a few years ago without a scrap of knowledge about images. I thought that this would be the case and it wasn't being used for anything, so it's deletion is neither here nor there. A bit gutted, but hey that's the rules! Thanks for looking. BTW, Grimaldi is lined up for a GA review in a weeks time courtesy of Pyrotec and my plan then is to go straight to FAC. Can I still count on you for an image review? -- CassiantoTalk 17:47, 11 November 2012 (UTC)

Cup scoring changes

I guess I'd better start updating the bot, huh :) The only difficult(ish) one is the prose-size calculator for DYKs. What metric do you want me to use? Or let people do it manually? - Jarry1250 [Deliberation needed] 13:01, 23 December 2012 (UTC)

What should I be doing about featured portals? At the moment they are eligible for a 2x multipler...? - Jarry1250 [Deliberation needed] 16:04, 23 December 2012 (UTC)
Okay, going well so far. Does the 2-point DYK bonus go on before or after multipliers? (i.e. is a DYK created in 2006 and with 25 interwikis worth 5 * 2 + 2 = 12 points or (5 + 2) * 2 = 14 points?). And how do you want to format the 10-point DYK vs 5-point DYK division? A 2x multiplier is the easiest, although it might be a little unobvious. Or you could have separate columns for each. - Jarry1250 [Deliberation needed] 13:32, 24 December 2012 (UTC)
All done I think. But with 98 new lines of code there's bound to be a bug or two in there.
I've purposefully cut two corners: firstly, instead of prosesize-counting articles as they appeared on the mainpage, I'm counting them at the time of the last edit to their DYK nom page (i.e. when they were moved to prep) plus 12 hours. Should only a maximum of ~12 hours out. Also, I can't quite get my prosesize-counter to matchup with DrPDA's, but it's only about 8 characters out on your average 5000 character sample, so I think it's close enough. Best, - Jarry1250 [Deliberation needed] 17:05, 26 December 2012 (UTC)

Hi there; you're receiving this message because you have previously shown interest in the WikiCup. This is just to remind you that the 2013 WikiCup will be starting on 1 January, and that signups will remain open throughout January. Old and new Wikipedians and WikiCup participants are warmly invited to take part in this year's competition. Thought I'd give this a try, but need to check about Featured picture sets. How do these work? Treat each image as one FP?

A decent example is Wikipedia:Featured_picture_candidates/The_Early_Poems_of_Alfred,_Lord_Tennyson Adam Cuerden (talk) 19:41, 30 December 2012 (UTC)

Probably doesn't help that I'm the only person to regularly do them. I think Durova did one once, that's it. Adam Cuerden (talk) 20:16, 30 December 2012 (UTC)

see also User_talk:Grandiose's comment and my reply. Adam Cuerden (talk) 21:18, 30 December 2012 (UTC)

And, just to double check, I can't count any FP whose upload and/or nomination come before January 1st, right? (And, obviously, the finishing of work on it, but I'm presuming that the one I'm working on now is fine if I don't finish it today, which is unlikely.) I am a new user who joined in August of last year and also joined the Wiki Cup. Hahc21 has been helping me, ut he does not know the answer to this question. If you do please answer it. So, if it does appear on the main page (featured article, picture etc), it doesn't count?--Lucky102 (talk) 21:40, 2 January 2013 (UTC)

Do you have to work on it significantly for it to count?
Including DYK's, just say if Norbert Murphy, an article which I nominate and worked on significantly, becomes a DYK, I get the point, but if I nominate, say Paris, which I barely or never worked on and it becomes a DYK, due to my nomination, I don't get the points? For photos, do you have to take the photo, or just nominate it, because you don't really work significantly on a photo.--Lucky102 (talk) 12:33, 3 January 2013 (UTC)

Potential FACs?

Now the articles you "approved" are FAs, so now I have a few left that I'm not sure about. I think Red Rail and Réunion Ibis could go, but I also have Lesser Antillean Macaw, which is slightly controversial, and has few sources, and then Rodrigues Rail, which is quite short. Something like Abuwtiyuw is much shorter, though, and became an FA. FunkMonk (talk) 06:13, 4 January 2013 (UTC)

hi

I'm a new user here. I'd like to create an article about my father he was a painter.... i want to upload his pictures and paintings (that are in private collections) so that noone could use those uploads without my permission. can you give me some advise what to write when uploading the paintings. thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by Makhomakho (talkcontribs) 13:36, 4 January 2013 (UTC)

I don't know if it is ok to comment on this being a fellow contestant, but the article he listed became a GA back in 2009, only did a few minor edits to that page this year and its clearly not eligible for submission. Can you look at it closer. Thanks Secret account 06:11, 6 January 2013 (UTC)

I saw you removed this from my submissions page - I added it because I had done a reasonable amount of edits this year and it was promoted this year, but I see it had been nominated a couple of months ago. Is this the reason you removed it, as I wish to avoid making similar mistakes in future. Thanks --Gilderien Chat|List of good deeds 13:47, 6 January 2013 (UTC)

Audio bitrate reduction.

Do you know how I might be actually able to create a version of my uploaded file that you tagged that has a lower bitrate? I created the .ogg version of the sample using Audacity, but I haven't found a control within the program that can alter the bitrate. Besides, I thought .ogg files were designed to have the lowest possible bitrates anyway. I Am RufusConversation is a beautiful thing. 09:53, 3 January 2013 (UTC)

Images discussion

Hi. I was wondering if you werent busy, could you weigh in at Talk:Aaliyah (album)#Images? Your comments a while ago at Born This Way were helpful and enlightening, and this involves something similar, although less contentious, after contesting another editor's removal/change to certain images. My Wikicup submissions

Hi J, in response to your note on my talk page about you removing my DYK submission: this is the first year I've competed, so I'm not sure about how the rules are interpreted. I understand your reasoning, since the rules are clear about how only articles working on this year are eligible, but the rules also say that an article has to be reviewed this year. Yes, it's true that the majority of the DYK was written last year (actually, in Dec. 2012), but it was put in article space, reviewed in DYK, and appeared on the main page last week. That's why I thought that it was acceptable. You, being one of the judges, have a right to make your rulings, but I wanted to explain that I wasn't trying to game the system. I'm learning what is and what isn't acceptable. I do have some articles I'm in the middle of writing, so hopefully you'll think that most of the work will be done this year, and before the end of Feb. so I can move to the next level. I only have four points thus far, so I dunno. At any rate, thanks and hope all goes well as Wikicup goes along. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 05:22, 9 January 2013 (UTC)

John Le Mesurier

Hi JM, Firstly thanks for sorting out a couple of my recent errors on James Bond in film (I uploaded the Broccoli and Saltzman images and put them into the article, so all blame goes to me!) I'll look for other images of those two and use them in their own articles (and not the JB in film one). As I am terrible when it comes to image rights etc, I wonder if you could pass comment on a new article at FAC, John Le Mesurier when you get a chance? I think we should be OK with most as they are from Commons, but there are three non-free images which it would be good to sort out early on in the process. Many thanks for as and when you get the chance!. All the best - SchroCat (talk) 06:16, 10 January 2013 (UTC)

I've got a question for you. (When, or I guess, if) Latin Grammy Award for Best Long Form Music Video is promoted to FL status, would it count for the cup? It was originally nominated in December.  — Statυs (talk, contribs) 22:24, 3 January 2013 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) No, it wouldn't: you have to have worked on it this year; the actual nomination date doesn't particularly matter. Hope that helps, - Jarry1250 [Deliberation needed] 23:43, 3 January 2013 (UTC)
(Sorry for asking so many questions, but...) In response to the above, I have another question. I know that Homme (fragrance) will obviously count for the cup, as I did a significant amount of work on it in 2013 (it was originally created on new year's eve), but I was wondering if it's DYK would count, even though it was nominated on new year's eve?  — Statυs (talk, contribs) 23:29, 5 January 2013 (UTC)

Hi. This is a 1950 film. PD per Template:PD-Indonesia. I was wondering if it could be uploaded to the commons or images freely used from it in the article?♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 14:54, 11 January 2013 (UTC)

Just a heads-up: While a version of this appears on my dA, I wasn't entirely happy with it, so decided to make a number of adjustments before uploading it here.

  • I went back to a previous save of the file, and redid some aspects of the restoration, mainly the borders, levels, and some additional cleanup..
  • The adjustments took an hour or two.
  • They were done yesterday.

Can I count it for the Wikicup? Presuming it passes, of course: This is the sort of nom that really could go either way quite easily, since the artwork is pretty terrible, but the EV high. Adam Cuerden (talk) 04:47, 11 January 2013 (UTC)

Long story short: As I'm a citizen of the United Kingdom, the amount of creative input needed to claim a copyright is fairly minimal. However, this one shouldn't have had the CC-license, and I have removed it.

I use a three-tiered scale:

  • For relatively easy restorations, I list myself as a restorer.
  • For medium-hard restorations, I strongly request attribution.
  • For the most difficult restorations, where large parts of the image have to be reconstructed - and not just simple bits like letters - I claim a copyright on the restoration, and release it CC or Attribution.

Honestly, there's only two reasons I do this is: Firstly, because of poster sellers, who can be a bit unethical about this sort of thing. If they're going to make huge profits off of other people's work, I'd like them to have a legally-enforceable obligation to credit me; and secondly, because at my age and still suffering through a long illness, I need to do something to make a name for myself. Particularly after that Arbcom thing a few years ago made the top result of google searches about me be proponents of homeopathy attacking me using the retracted Arbcom ruling. I don't thoroughly understand how the IP addressing works, but it changes every-time I connect to the internet. WikiCup scoring question

Hi, I just signed up for the WikiCup, this being my first year of participation. I was wondering how scoring applies to articles I started working on before throwing my hat. I don't plan to claim Lithium (Nirvana song) if it passes GAN as I did most of the work 2-3 years ago and I just finally got around to adding some finishing touches this last week, but I've started some work on At My Most Beautiful recently, and there's more to go before it's GAN-ready. WesleyDodds (talk) 07:08, 20 January 2013 (UTC)

Hey again, I've just failed two GA nominees, Talk:Type O Negative/GA2 and Talk:Dalek variants/GA1. Reading over the rules, it appears I can claim the former for scoring and not the latter, due to review length. I'm perfectly willing to defer to you in regards to what I can and can't claim in these instances. (These are also the very first GANs I've reviewed that I've had to fail right off the bat, it must be said, so let me know if I've skipped any major steps in the review process, if you could). WesleyDodds (talk) 09:07, 22 January 2013 (UTC)

Hello Milburn, since you seem to be proficient in matters related to NFCC, can you tell me how the above image passes WP:NFCC#3a and WP:NFCC#8 when there is an existing cover art present in the article "Love Profusion" and the above cover, an addition is not even being critically discussed in any way? I have seen User:Aspects adding secondary cover arts in many articles, includingg "Somebody That I Used to Know", and it baffles me that how is he/she coming to the rationale that they pass NFCC without any notability or dicussion? Hey, Milburn. I'm going to revive Featured Sounds. About time someone did. I had made plans for it when I went on long wikibreak, but the person who had promised to look after it never did a damn thing. (I'll give their initials, just to assure some people I'm not talking about them: JV.) I doubt it'll matter before Round 2, but I do think the Wikicup should add FS back in, to encourage participation. Adam Cuerden (talk) 07:46, 11 February 2013 (UTC)

(tps) Isn't the problem going to be how to score FS, given that no-one can really predict how much work will be involved in getting a FS in the first few months of its re-existence? - Jarry1250 [Deliberation needed] 15:28, 11 February 2013 (UTC)
The Wikicup is meant to encourage participation; frankly, if it can't help out with participation of the project most in need of it, Wikicup is a massive failure in its primary goal. Adam Cuerden (talk) 15:49, 11 February 2013 (UTC)
There's really no need for this aggressioncomment removed, and your comments about the WikiCup are out of order. The featured sounds project is not "the project most in need of" participation if there's a full list of one person who cares about it. The Cup is not here to legitimise projects, it's here to encourage participation in already legitimised projects. There's a big difference. J Milburn (talk) 15:53, 11 February 2013 (UTC)
Featured Sounds was a long standing process that was taken down by broken promises and active driving off of participants by a very small number of people. It's a basic part of an internet encyclopedia's goals. I've always been incredibly upset that John Vandenburg - after promising me that he'd do the coding that was the only thing necessary to get featured sounds onto the main page at that point, then didn't, and, as such, doomed Featured Sounds to a downspiral, and would rather like to fix this situation. Adam Cuerden (talk) 16:00, 11 February 2013 (UTC)
That's a somewhat partisan reading. FS was a process that always had problems, and which had serious issues towards the end. I think anyone looking from the outside in could see that. And a featured sound project is not "a basic part of an internet encyclopedia's goals"; that's a ridiculous claim. Using sounds at all on Wikipedia articles is something that is yet to get off the ground to the extent that it could; we have featured articles on music and musicians which don't use any sounds. There are potentially a number of reasons for that, but it's certainly a strong indication that your demand for the centrality of the featured sound project is not as strong as you may believe. J Milburn (talk) 16:08, 11 February 2013 (UTC)
It's a sign of Wikipedia's failure, yes. But I'm going to stop participating in this discussion before I get reminded too much about everything I loathe about Wikipedia and start considering a long Wikibreak again. Adam Cuerden (talk) 16:17, 11 February 2013 (UTC)
(edit conflict) Even having been fairly involved in FS, I'll tell you that it was obvious that there were longstanding issues with the project. I definitely agree with your sentiment that WikiCup is not here to legitimise projects, but rather to encourage participation in already legitimised projects. Hi J Milburn - Lankiveil,

Sometime ago you gave a “Weak Keep” to an article which was eventually deleted on the grounds of nobility and COI.

I ask, would you consider helping me to review content and advise/assist with possible overall review?

Following the advice of your and the deletion administrator, I have since amended the article to very simple content and added more evidence in a sandbox. Next from asking for help - I did get a response from one editor that the autobiography was the problem (details my talk page).

Any ideas how I can overcome this "autobiography" issue? And get this article possibly reviewed on “exceptional proven circumstances”

Please read my thoughts ” Why” - on my talk page to see reasons and if appropriate can you ruthless edit the sand box article.

I'm thinking of starting Murder of Jennifer Cave, making it focused on the murder itself, and simply redirecting "Colton Pitonyak" to the new page. Would you be interested in looking at a draft? Thanks WhisperToMe (talk) 09:09, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

Ok. I started User:WhisperToMe/Murder of Jennifer Cave. I strictly only used RSes. Should I move it to the mainspace now? WhisperToMe (talk) 18:03, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
Ok! I'll move it to the mainspace. The high school of Pitonyak is brought up to show that he was a high achiever before coming to UT and that historically he had a "bright future" - In Cave's case, I don't think there has been as much commentary though RSes from Corpus Christi do point out what high school she went to. Hi, I've just noticed on my nominations page that The Power of Four, which just appeared on DYK, did not receive the 5 extra points for being over 5,000 characters. WikiCup bot error

Hi J, I've just noticed that there has been a miscalculation by the bot on one of my noms. The Church of King Charles the Martyr, Royal Tunbridge Wells DYK, is on 5 Wikipedias (including the English one) but the bot missed out giving the multiplier. Could you fix it? The C of E God Save the Queen! (talk) 17:02, 7 March 2013 (UTC)

(tps) To save you checking, JM, it's because it didn't exist on enwiki on 1 January. Just a case of a judge manually overriding the bot. - Jarry1250 [Vacation needed] 17:18, 7 March 2013 (UTC)
Either that or it's not picking up the new Wikidata thing. The C of E God Save the Queen! (talk) 20:35, 7 March 2013 (UTC)
Nono, the bot definitely picks up Wikidata entries. Although, as I noted last time this came up, it could use them in future to work out the number of Wikipedias a subject existed on on 1 January without the need for the en.wp to have existed at that date. Speaking of which, I've struck my earlier comment because this article only existed on four; I don't think you can count en.wp in that list, sorry. - Jarry1250 [Vacation needed] 21:58, 7 March 2013 (UTC)
You can include enwp on the list normally, but obviously not if you've only created the article this year. The rule is: For every 5 Wikipedias (including the English Wikipedia) on which an article or portal appears as of 31 December 2012, the article or portal is awarded an extra 0.2 times as many points if it appears on did you know, or is promoted to good article, featured article, featured list or featured portal. Question pertaining to WP:WikiCup

Hi, do you know what the fastest loser row in the unofficial score list mean? ☯ Bonkers The Clown \(^_^)/ Nonsensical Babble10:01, 16 March 2013 (UTC)

Nauru Reed Warbler

I'll see what I can find (it will be tomorrow probably). I wouldn't be optimistic about the New Scientist ref, it's not normally held in the usual archives, but Notornis might be more accessible, I've found it in the past. Anyway, I'll have a look Jimfbleak - talk to me? 20:11, 18 March 2013 (UTC)

OK, the bad news first. My warbler book doesn't include Oceania, and surprisingly for a family monograph, is poor on taxonomy. My only regional book that covers any of the islands is on the birds of western Polynesia, out of your range. If you would like some etymology, the following are from Jobling, James A (2010). The Helm Dictionary of Scientific Bird Names (PDF). London: Christopher Helm. ISBN 978-1-4081-2501-4.

  • Acrocephalus Gr. akros topmost, highest (ake point); kephale head; “Perhaps Naumann thought ακρσς =acutus [sharp-pointed], as Agassiz…did; but this is an error” (BOU 1915). Pages 30-31
  • rehsei Ernst Rehse (fl. 1880) German ornithologist and collector in the Pacific (Acrocephalus). Page 332
  • Calamoherpe (syn. Acrocephalus) Gr. kalamos reed; herpes creeping thing, creeper. Page 84

The BOU mention is to British Ornithologists’ Union. 1915. A list of British birds. 2nd ed. BOU, London.

I think you might run into trouble at FAC through unlinked and unexplained technical terms. I've linked mandible, but ear coverts and greater coverts need to be linked, explained or rephrased without these terms. If you want to link, I'll expand the covert (feather) article to include these, let me know. I'll see what else I can dig up, there must be more out there. Jimfbleak - talk to me? 09:40, 19 March 2013 (UTC)

OK, I'll do that. Meanwhile, page 55 of Notes of Nauru has the text The birds include the white crane; the blue crane; a brownish-yellow songster the size of a sparrow which feeds on insects, builds on the ground and has a note like the Australian nightingale and is not particular whether it sings during the day or night. This is the only reference to the warbler in the text. Jimfbleak - talk to me? 10:05, 19 March 2013 (UTC)
and the workshop summary starts on p. 18 of this Jimfbleak - talk to me? 10:11, 19 March 2013 (UTC)
What I suggest is that I add the new material where it seems relevant, sort out the coverts and see if I can find something on parasites. We can both see all the relevant new stuff, so you can correct/add/ce as you see fit (If you would rather do it the other way around. let me know) Jimfbleak - talk to me? 10:21, 19 March 2013 (UTC)
It may be tricky putting a date to the change to Acrocephalus. This is straightforward when a new genus is created for that purpose, less so when both exist. Acrocephalus (1811) predates Calamoherpes (1926), so I don't yet know whether it's based on priority or a change in taxonomic thinking. Jimfbleak - talk to me? 10:41, 19 March 2013 (UTC)
I don't have Kennerley et al, is it the call or the song that is similar to Blackbird/Song Thrush? I've added a bit that definitely refers to the song, but either "call" needs to be changed to "song", or the sentence needs to be tweaked to clarify that that the Willie Wagtail bit refers to the song. Jimfbleak - talk to me? 16:22, 19 March 2013 (UTC)
I'm struggling now to find much new stuff, can't find anything so far on juveniles or parasites. Email me if you would like Cibois et al (or Stephens, although that would be more for general interest than anything significant) Jimfbleak - talk to me? 08:25, 20 March 2013 (UTC)

WikiCup 2013 March newsletter

We are halfway through round two. Pool A sees the strongest competition, with five out of eight of its competitors scoring over 100, and Pool H is lagging, with half of its competitors yet to score. WikiCup veterans lead overall; Pool A's Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) (2010's winner) leads overall, with poolmate London Miyagawa (submissions) (a finalist in 2011 and 2012) not far behind. Pool F's New South Wales Casliber (submissions) (a finalist in 2010, 2011 and 2012) is in third. The top two scorers in each pool, as well as the next highest 16 scorers overall, will progress to round three at the end of April.

Today has seen a number of Easter-themed did you knows from WikiCup participants, and March has seen collaboration from contestants with WikiWomen's History Month. It's great to see the WikiCup being used as a locus of collaboration; if you know of any collaborative efforts going on, or want to start anything up, please feel free to use the WikiCup talk page to help find interested editors. As well as fostering collaboration, we're also seeing the Cup encouraging the improvement of high-importance articles through the bonus point system. Highlights from the last month include GAs on physicist Niels Bohr (Australia Hawkeye7 (submissions)), on the European hare (Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions)), on the constellation Circinus (Alaska Keilana (submissions) and New South Wales Casliber (submissions)) and on the Third Epistle of John (Indiana Cerebellum (submissions)). All of these subjects were covered on at least 50 Wikipedias at the beginning of the year and, subsequently, each contribution was awarded at least three times as many points as normal.

Wikipedians who enjoy friendly competition may be interested in participating in April's wikification drive. While wikifying an article is typically not considered "significant work" such that it can be claimed for WikiCup points, such gnomish work is often invaluable in keeping articles in shape, and is typically very helpful for new writers who may not be familiar with formatting norms.

A quick reminder: now, submission pages will need only a link to the article and a link to the nomination page, or, in the case of good article reviews, a link to the review only. See your submissions' page for details. This will hopefully make updating submission pages a little less tedious. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. March 2013 WikiCup Newsletter Correction

Hello J Milburn, I am a participant in the 2013 WikiCup and noticed a minor error on the newsletter. On the third sentence, it says "Pool A's Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) (2010's winner) leads overall, with poolmate Miyagawa (submissions) (a finalist in 2011 and 2012) not far behind. Pool F's Casliber (submissions) (a finalist in 2010, 2011 and 2012) is in third." Miyagawa is actually third place, not second (which seems to be implied by the "not far behind" remark). I am actually second place with 618 points, against Miyagawa's 605 points, according to this page. Also, Casliber (marked in the newsletter as 3rd place) has only 500 points. It's not a big deal to me, but I just wanted to make you aware of the current scores. Regards,--12george1 (talk) 23:50, 31 March 2013 (UTC)

Nauru Reed Warbler

I've nothing ready at present, Phedina is languishing at GAN (I guess the opaque title doesn't help), and I'm not sure that it's potential FAC anyway. Although it would be good to have a free image of the Nauru Reed Warbler, it's not obligatory (and the article has relevant images, which is required if possible). Zino's Petrel had only a self-made image of the species, but the similarity of the Acrocephalus species makes this beyond my abilities. If the content and prose are up to scratch, I'd be inclined to nominate. Jimfbleak - talk to me? 05:31, 9 April 2013 (UTC)

Hi, how are you? I was wondering what the problem was with the Powerpuff Girls picture on the above article? The topics seem to be closely interrelated and relevant, thus meeting WP:NFCC #8. It is also supported by text. Regards, Till 03:57, 9 April 2013 (UTC)

So how does one define the threshold for "contexual significance", because isn't that subjective? Eg. if someone has never watched the Powerpuff Girls, they will not know anything about Chemical X, nor will they know who Professor Utonium is, therefore the picture which shows both the chemical and the character may enhance their knowledge to understand who exactly was in the video. There are so many articles which have images of something similar when you would think they wouldn't need it. Eg. in Cry Me a River (Justin Timberlake song), why does the article need an image of a Grammy Award for readers to understand that the song was nominated for a Grammy Award? How does it enhance the reader's knowledge? That can be done purely though text alone. Or take On the Floor as another example: what is the purpose of an image of a bottle of whisky in the music video section? How does it further enhance the reader's knowledge that there was whisky in the video? Till 05:56, 10 April 2013 (UTC)

Your suggestion "Despite their best efforts...“ is excellent. I've changed that line anyway and shall revise it the next time I do an edit. As to "...accumulated over 1,000 years...” I'm not sure what would be the "correct language", perhaps you can suggest an appropriate correctness。 These were families which accumulated books for over 1,000 years. A side note: After 1949 under the red flag, these same families either had their library pavilions razed or strongly encouraged to "patriotically donate" to the people's government. ):?

I'm showing this wiki process to a couple of professional librarians here in the U.S. and overseas for fun and awaiting comments. In a few days I shall be editing those sections again after all the dust (including the picture) settles. Meanwhile please comment if you wish. I especially appreciate specific to the point comments. File talk:SikuProofTangPoems康熙四库唐校本.jpg

Hello again, Thank you again for your interest in this subject.

Concerning the posted concern "This file has a non-free use rationale that is disputed because of the following concern: This is a very old book, presumably out of copyright. A free image could be created.. Unless this concern is addressed by correcting any shortcomings in the non-free use rationale (templates such as Template:Non-free use rationale can assist in this), the image will be deleted or removed from some uses after Wednesday, 17 April 2013."

Actually this image is that of a handwritten proof manuscript (proof as proofing before printing). It is not an old printed book. It was handwritten for an editing committee before printing, and therefore unique. It looks printed because such a manuscript to be presented to an Imperial committee would have been copied by an Imperial calligrapher. The manuscript is uniquely owned by the Library. I took the picture from their digital archive accessed by a public computer. I own this specific screen image and am using it for my non-commercial wiki article. The situation should be the same as an image of a painting by Renoir which I might take in a public museum or from a museum digital archive.
