At least they credited Wikipedia, (see here and here for a much more infuriating example) though their claim that "Wikipedia believes Facebook may be its most read page due to people accidentally typing the term into the Wikipedia search bar" is a bit of a stretch; I actually said that it's impossible to tell if that's not the case, which is a bit different. And I'm not clear on why they said "Wikipedia has no idea how or why [G-force] received so many views" instead of "We didn't bother to ask Wikipedia why they removed it from the list." Real life and the holidays put me one issue away from falling off Wikipedia[edit]

I am terribly sorry that I was unable to do more with ITN for the Signpost over the Christmas holiday. Real life had me only a single crises away from a long Wikibreak to deal with it and enjoy the holidays as much as I could through the issues. I will e-mail you to explain a little further but may be a little more at ease now. This is why I was really hoping that Matty would be a co-author of the content in case I was unable to continue at some point. (Instead of an e-mail I am opting for a more transparent discussion) Over the last year a great deal of family issues have arouse. My father had a bad fall over the holidays and was hospitalized and is still there. A death in my spouse's family left them all reeling from the Trust issues that became apparent and I am assisting one of the trustees and this is becoming a very daunting task to assist with. A family tree was discovered recently from research prepared by my uncle and I am discovering some very life changing facts that I am just now starting to deal with. But...since I am a Wikipedian at heart (seriously.....Wikipedia is now in my very blood it seems) I am using these new discoveries to benefit Wikipedia and our articles on the Hawaiian Royal Family, however I am finding some road blocks with other editors who feel that historians do not care about the line I have discovered to be very relevant to these articles and I am stuck trying to figure out whether this one editor has a bias against this line (as pointed out on their user page) or just believes that I am trying to elevate a personal family history. I can say without any difficulty that I have discovered reliable sources that back up all of my research and are, in fact, also mentioned in sources already being used.
While I have asked about my connection to these figures and whether or not this constitutes some sort of COI and have been told by several Admin that it does not stand as COI (Having just discovered these facts) I am still very concerned about any bias I may have and am trying, desperately, to be sure and separate any new emotions I may have about these facts.
To make a long story short...I am just now finding out about a family history after 50 years of no information. It is both thrilling and scary! At the same time my researcher side keeps pointing out the errors in our own articles and I keep telling myself to remember the words and advise of User Sitush. To personalize such research is not right, but on the other hand, my great interest in these subjects does make for a good deal of pertinent information.
Thank you Cullen328 for the update on Miss bono. I really miss her and hope she can return. I am off to visit my father in the hospital today and will attempt to re-activate my Wikipedia interests again shortly. Right now...I am a preoccupied by legal issues, research into art that was left to us and a stock certificates I discovered and whether they have any value today. I may be a little over my head and the legal cost are mounting. God I hate lawyers....but just because of their cost. LOL! (they are people just like us....sort of....wink wink. Ed, there is something indistinct about user:Nechlison. A cursory check of his/her edits indicates someone that is not a new user given the familiarity of wikipedia's article deletion. Also, their usage of English appears problematic, while "asking" for a barnstar from an Admin to give them some sort of "legitimacy"? User:Jaqeli inquired the possibility this user is a sock.[1] Needless to say, something is not right here. --Kansas Bear (talk) 17:37, 12 January 2014 (UTC)
I'm not so sure that they're a sock, nor am I convinced that they are familiar with Wikipedia article deletion, given that they were trying to delete Jaqeli's articles simply because they were blocked.

We've included a retrospective on the changes and progress TWL has seen over the last year, the results of the survey TWL participants completed in December, some of our plans for the future, a second interview with a Wiki Love Libraries coordinator, and more. Here's to 2014 being a year of expansion and innovation for TWL!

The Wikipedia Library completed the first 6 months of its Individual Engagement grant last week. Here's where we are and what we've done:

Increased access to sources: 1500 editors signed up for 3700 free accounts, individually worth over $500,000, with usage increases of 400-600%

Deep networking: Built relationships with Credo, HighBeam, Questia, JSTOR, Cochrane, LexisNexis, EBSCO, New York Times, and OCLC

New pilot projects: Started the Wikipedia Visiting Scholar project to empower university-affiliated Wikipedia researchers

Developed community: Created portal connecting 250 newsletter recipients, 30 library members, 3 volunteer coordinators, and 2 part-time contractors

Tech scoped: Spec'd out a reference tool for linking to full-text sources and established a basis for OAuth integration

Broad outreach: Wrote a feature article for Library Journal's The Digital Shift; presenting at the American Library Association annual meeting

SignPost Submission question[edit]

Hi there The ed17,

As you likely know, many contests exist or are being created on WIkipedia. Just to name a few, the WikiCup, the Core contest, the Stub Contest, and the Tyop Contest (which I am running). I thought I could write an article about how helpful contests are, and I would also discuss the argument about prizes and paid editing. If you're ok with this, would you mind if I put a note about entering the Tyop Contest, which starts on February 1st? If possible, I'd like this to appear in the next SignPost (Wednesday, January 22nd), so that people will have an opportunity to participate in a contest. I'm not sure what section this goes under... any ideas?

If you'd like to write a special report on contests in general, we could run it in the WikiProject Report. You could mention that the Tyop Contest is beginning, but the meat of the report would need to be about contest that have already been held. You know, it may be interesting to omit them, but focus on the omissions in the lead and ruminate on the difficulties of finding reasons to exclude them. I don't think you'd catch flak that way. Incidentally, Kuznetsov-class aircraft carrier's spike could be due to work beginning on a new Chinese aircraft carrier? I heard from my colleagues across the ocean that a German firm Otto-Brenner-Stiftung published a research report on covert PR participation on Wikipedia. I found the report here. I haven't read it yet (or at least a machine translated version), but I thought it may be of interest to the SignPost and something that you may not have seen since it is not in English. It was covered in an "In brief" in ITM, the week before last. This Thursday, there was also a TV programme on German ARD (equivalent to the BBC1) where experts from various PR firms offered advice on how to edit Wikipedia articles on one's own company in an ethical manner. WikiCup 2014 January newsletter[edit]

The 2014 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with, at time of writing, 138 participants. The is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2010. If you are yet to join the competition, don't worry- the judges have agreed to keep the signups open for a few more days. By a wide margin, our current leader is newcomer Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions), whose set of 14 featured pictures, the first FPs of the competition, was worth 490 points. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:

Featured articles, featured lists, featured topics and featured portals are yet to play a part in the competition. The judges have removed a number of submissions which were deemed ineligible. Typically, we aim to see work on a project, followed by a nomination, followed by promotion, this year. We apologise for any disappointment caused by our strict enforcement this year; we're aiming to keep the competition as fair as possible.

Wikipedians interested in friendly competition may be interested to take part in The Core Contest; unlike the WikiCup, The Core Contest is not about audited content, but, like the WikiCup, it is about article improvement; specifically, The Core Contest is about contribution to some of Wikipedia's most important article. Of course, any work done for The Core Contest, if it leads to a DYK, GA or FA, can earn WikiCup points.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews.
