Date Section Article Notes Resolved
2 August 2018 OTD 1790 United States Census "to allocate Congressional seats and electoral votes." I'm not really seeing this, and if it's what I think it's referring to, it's not referenced either. Would be better to focus on the key item which is the gathering of population data. Yes. Changed hook to The first United States Census was conducted, with the United States residential population enumerated to be 3,929,214.
Kuwaiti military Pipe to a redirect Yes.
DYK Michael Peter Kaye "... largest registry of heart and lung transplantation data..." the "registry of" should be included in the link. Yes
Purple eagle ray "that the purple eagle ray was named after Ronald Hamlyn-Harris, director of the Queensland Museum?" well, the Latin name was named after Hamlyn-Harris, this is quite misleading.
I added the scientific name (Myliobatis hamlyni) to the blurb so now it should be obvious. howcheng {chat} 01:39, 2 August 2018 (UTC)
Yes
3 August 2018 DYK creeping comb jelly "... that the creeping comb jelly lives on the surface of a starfish (pictured) in the Echinasteridae family?" the Echinasteridae family is not mentioned in the "creeping comb jelly" article and thus this DYK fails basic checks. Even the Echinaster luzonicus article only mentions the family in the infobox, and that's unreferenced...
The taxobox is referenced to WoRMS, but I have additionally added and cited the family name in the lead section. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 08:45, 2 August 2018 (UTC)
Yes
Behzod Abduraimov Is not the demonym for Uzbekistan "Uzbek" and not "Uzbekistani" (per our own article too)?
An "Uzbek" is someone who is an ethnic Uzbek, rather than someone from Uzbekistan. There are many Uzbeks living in places other than Uzbekistan. An "Uzbekistani" is a national of Uzbekistan, only 80% of whom are ethinic Uzbeks. Either is correct in the case of this chap, who appears to be an Uzbekistan national, and an ethnic Uzbek. Fish+Karate 09:23, 2 August 2018 (UTC)
Ah, so our Uzbekistan article is incorrect. Thanks.
Not an error
R. H. Wilenski "Selected publications" section is highly under-referenced and tagged, should be removed until addressed.
[NB " the publication itself is a citation for its own authorship" this is not true, how can readers verify this? You could simply write a load of nonsense unlinked unsourced titles and simply claim "oh, the publication verifies itself". Nope.
Furthermore "we can't include a citation for the decision to select those publications and not others, because if a list of selected publications is taken from a copyrighted source then that makes the list a copyright violation", more craziness, firstly the point missed it "why are these selected"? No inclusion criteria stated, another issue. Next, who mentioned anything about a copyrighted list? Bizarre.
Yes
Chang and Eng Bunker It is absolutely bonkers that an article with this many interesting images has been tucked away as the fifth or so hook. It should be moved to another queue where it can feature the lead image, and guarantee >10K hits.
See Wikipedia_talk:Did_you_know#Moving_a_hook_to_a_prep. Anarchyte (work | talk) 07:22, 2 August 2018 (UTC)
Yes, moved to prep 6
Vampyr How does the hook meet supplementary rule C6 when all it is doing is describing "in-game" actions? If the DYK project want to drop that rule for the quirky slot, they should do that, but right now, no.
Narutolovehinata5 raised this issue at the nom page, so we have a possible ALT1 ready to go (though it's disappointing. I quite like the current hook). Pinging Cognissonance as the writer, and RileyBugz and Yoninah as the reviewers. I'll move this to the main ERRORS for more eyes if none of them are able to respond. Anarchyte (work | talk) 07:22, 2 August 2018 (UTC)
Agreed, it's also disappointing that the rule wasn't observed before it was promoted to a queue. I'd be happy for these kinds of hooks to run, but only once the project has suitably caveated F6.
I'm going to copy this discussion to the main errors page as none of the four people mentioned have edited in the last 4 hours. Anarchyte (work | talk) 08:25, 2 August 2018 (UTC)
The original hook is the best one and others have gone through DYK with similar content. Why do we have this C6 rule again? Is there actual reasoning behind it? Cognissonance (talk) 13:36, 2 August 2018 (UTC)
Yes
OTD Firestone Tire and Rubber Company Harvey Firestone is piped to a redirect.
Actually, it's just not good enough, far too much of it is uncited.
Yes. Replaced with 1913. If there are any problems with that hook, let me know.
Kruševo Republic "... which existed only ten days before ..." -> " which existed for only ten days before" Yes
Jesse Owens "..dashing Nazi leaders' hopes of Aryan domination." well, not quite, because if that had been the case, I doubt we'd have had a Second World War. But perhaps "dashing Nazi leaders' hopes of Aryan domination at the Olympics" or similar is what is really meant. Yes
Thomas Francis Meagher The only source in the article that I can see which notes his birthdate is this one which clearly states "Meagher was born in Waterford on 23rd August 1823..." So, not OTD tomorrow then...
History.com has it as 3 August. Anarchyte (work | talk) 07:51, 2 August 2018 (UTC)
Given the uncertainty and the use of the other (23) source in the article, this should probably be replaced.
I don't know how much credence to give to that PDF. It says it's by an unknown author and from an unknown source. After further research, the preponderance of sources (and his headstone) state Aug 3 as the birth date. howcheng {chat} 15:50, 2 August 2018 (UTC)
Replaced with Hamilton Fish
References added. howcheng {chat} 15:50, 2 August 2018 (UTC)
Yes
4 August 2018 DYK Franz Schubert "600 vocal works and seven complete symphonies, gave only one" see MOS:NUM for comparable items ("cats and dogs"), all words or all numbers, no mixtures. This was already pointed out at WT:DYK. Yes
Butyrolactol A "...that Butyrolactol A, a ..." no need for capital B here. Yes
Mangrove kingfisher "that the mangrove kingfisher, found in Africa, sometimes collides with human structures while migrating?" you mean like all birds everywhere around the entire globe who sometimes fly into windows? How is this interesting?
It isn't. Changed it to ALT1. Anarchyte (work | talk) 07:17, 3 August 2018 (UTC)
Yes
Maria and Bogdan Kalinowski "are a married couple from Poznań, Poland, who are known as the most avid filmgoers in Poland. They watch films in ..." is how the article starts. Bogdan, however, is dead. The hook and the article are written as if they are still a couple and still doing this...
I've changed the tense of the article, but the hook still parses correctly as they are still known as the most avid, even though they've stopped? Stephen 05:12, 3 August 2018 (UTC)
I think "were recognized" is more accurate. And remove "married couple" - just say "that Maria and Bogdan Kalinowski were recognized ..." Fish+Karate 09:27, 3 August 2018 (UTC)
Yes
OTD Public holidays in the Cook Islands " in the Cook Islands (1965)" where in the target article is 1965 mentioned, let alone referenced?
Added a line to the article. It's not the best sentence or reference, but it'll do for the time being.
Yes
Mount Asama No need to link basic words like "famine". The article doesn't say "cataclysmic", it says "climactic".
Removed "cataclysmic" ("An eruption of") and the link to famine.
Yes
Treaty of London (1839) Article uses "World War I", not "First World War" Yes
5 August 2018 OTD Victory Day (Croatia) First, why not just "Victory Day" per the article title? Second, if not that, then why not observe the D in Defenders?
I've capitalised D, but left the full event name.
Yes
John Ruthven, 3rd Earl of Gowrie "died during a failed attempt to kidnap King James VI" seems quite certain compared with the article which discusses various theories around what happened (see the Theories section), so this blurb should be caveated, e.g. "died most likely during..." Yes
Bertha Benz "going 106 km" why not simply "driving 106 km"? There are also quite a few unreferenced paragraphs here... Yes
DYK Flag of Sioux Falls, South Dakota "of the Flag of Sioux Falls" - no capital F Yes
Pharmacist-to-pharmacy technician ratio Like the article, the hook is US-centric and therefore needs context for this so-called "general increase" in the ratio. Plus, why did the term in the article "cashier" become "retail clerk"? Oh, and it's tagged per {{globalize}} now.
Mentioned on WP:ERRORS to see if people are supportive of pulling it.
The tag has been addressed apparently by adding two lines of text. But the hook still says "retail clerk".
Yes (just)
Steel Division 2 No mention in the prose of "half the team" being on strike Yes
Konstantin Petrovich Nechaev Target has been moved, so an ugly redirect from the main page now exists Yes
6 August 2018 DYK Sechs Lieder, Op. 68 (Strauss) "...composed Sechs Lieder, Op. 68, on poems... " does one "compose on" things? was it really "based on"? Yes
OTD Battle of Kletsk Infobox and lead of article say this battle took place of 5 August
That was changed back in February 2016 but went unnoticed until now. howcheng {chat} 01:13, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
Yes, replaced with Death of Mark Duggan/2011 England riots
TFL List of World Heritage Sites in Slovenia Apparently a "World Heritage Site" is now a "World Heritage site", so when the page was moved, all other such references should have been modified. Clearly this wasn't the case, and we now have capital "S" here in the blurb with also a redirect to the small "s" variant. When moving such heavily referenced articles, all references should be correctly updated. Yes
7 August 2018 DYK Flight Stop How many times can we mention "goose" in the hook? Three times... And linked location in caption is unnecessary Yes, de-goosed
Clifford Braimah "head of Ghana Water, is..." the company he is head of is called "Ghana Water Company" and has been thus named for some time. Yes, fixed name
ContraPoints The hook links "right-wing" but not "left-leaning", the latter of which is more obscure than the former. Either both, or neither, but not just one... Plus it turns out that ContraPoints isn't a channel per se, but a YouTuber in her own right. Yes, linked
Robert Edgeworth-Johnstone "from the aluminum brass tubing" British English, should be "ALUMINIUM"....
I'm not sure about "aluminium brass" - brass is a copper and zinc alloy, an alloy of copper and aluminium is called aluminium bronze. Fish+Karate 09:41, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
Yes
OTD Le Griffon Image caption needs italics Yes
Pope Stephen III "The papacy of Pope Stephen III,..." tautological here, no need to repeat "Pope". Yes
Le Griffon (redux) "became the first sailing ship to navigate the upper Great Lakes" well according to the article, August 7 was the date the voyage commenced, not when the ship successfully navigated the Great Lakes.
But on 7 August when it launched, it did become the first sailing ship to navigate those lakes. Nothing in the hook mentions successfully completing a voyage. As soon as the ship entered the water, it was navigating the lakes, and that was on 7 August. Perhaps "travel on" would be clearer? But I don't think that's an error, really. Fish+Karate 11:11, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
I see it, but it didn't navigate the Great Lakes on the day the voyage started. Its maiden voyage which commenced on 7 August saw it go on to navigate the upper Great Lakes.
"Upper great lakes" is all the Great Lakes other than Lake Ontario (from the Great Lakes article). The Griffon launched from a point 3 miles north of Lake Erie, (Squaw Island, now known as Unity Island), on 7 August, and unless you're suggesting they did less than 3 miles on their first day of travel, in a boat that could travel at 10-16 knots (12-18 mph) then you can safely say that 7 August was the date it began to navigate the upper Great Lakes. However it shouldn't take this much effort to justify/clarify a OTD blurb so I agree it could be reworded ("began its journey to be the first sailing ship etc etc"). Fish+Karate 12:38, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
Yes, reworded per chat over there <
Simele massacre "An estimated 3,000 Assyrians were slaughtered " the lead (rather terrible it is) says "The term is used to describe not only the massacre in Simele, but also the killing spree that took place among 63 Assyrian villages in the Dohuk and Mosul districts that led to the deaths of between 5,000[1][not in citation given] and 6,000[2][not in citation given][3][not in citation given] Assyrians. "
Change was made by an anonymous editor. The cited sources were valid for the original numbers of 600 to 3000. howcheng {chat} 16:06, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
That still leaves us with a problem. We can't just baldly state the higher end of the estimation as fact. --Dweller (talk) Become old fashioned! 16:07, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
I was in the process of rewriting the blurb. :) howcheng {chat} 16:12, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
Hi @Howcheng:. I don’t think any of the references support a figure of 3,000. See my post on WP:ERRORS. Fish+Karate 22:44, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
Yes, article fixed and blurb changed to "600–3,000"
1998 United States embassy bombings "injuring more than 4,500 others." article says "An estimated 4,000 in Nairobi were wounded, and another 85 in Dar es Salaam.[citation needed]" and infobox says "4,000" Yes
Jin Shengtan Where is the date of death inline referenced?
There was an inline reference in the "Death" section to a work in Google Books, but the page was not visible in preview, so I had AGF'ed it. howcheng {chat} 16:18, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
Now referenced. All the references states is that 7 August 1661 was the date he was beheaded, and doesn't confirm he died. I hope this gross assumption is ok.
Huntley Wright Where is the date of birth referenced? Just saying "it's on the birth certificate" is all very well (and could apply to just about every single bio in Wikipedia) but how does our readership verify this?
Left a message with Ssilvers, who was the person who added that citation in 2009 (and luckily for us, appears to be still active). howcheng {chat} 15:58, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
Per the reply, they actually had a copy of the birth certificate in hand. But I found another source: [1], so we're good to go. howcheng {chat} 23:36, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
Yes, reference added
8 August 2018 DYK Torrance Barrens "first dark-sky reserve?" well the article uses the term "preserve" much more frequently, our own article is at "preserve", and the sources referencing it generally call it a preserve. And is it "dark-sky preserve" or "dark sky preserve"? Consistency please. Oh, and the article refers to it as "The Torrens Barrens" not simply "Torrens Barrens".
Refs 4 through 6 use "dark-sky".
Preserve or Reserve though? Consistency required....
It's a dark-sky preserve, but a nature reserve.
Changed to preserve, in line with the article, and the dark-sky preserve article. Fish+Karate 08:43, 7 August 2018 (UTC)
Ah wait, hang on. Forgot to change it to preserve in the hook itself. I made all the changes in the article, which is why I was confused. Thanks Fish and karate! Anarchyte (work | talk) 09:05, 7 August 2018 (UTC)
Now fixed
Changes to article reverted
Fixed again
Deutsche Reiterliche Vereinigung "horse as a "cultural achievement"?" the article doesn't put this claim in quotes, consistency please. Also, I'm not sure how "Kulturgut Pferd" translates to "cultural achievement" either.
It translates to "cultural asset horse". Fixed Fish+Karate 08:45, 7 August 2018 (UTC)
Yes
Farouk Topan Works of fiction unreferenced in both the prose and the table. Yes, OCLC/ISBNs added to table
OTD 8888 Uprising "one-party state" is piped to a redirect back to itself Yes
2008 Studénka train wreck "There were 8 deaths and 64 injured when a EuroCity express train en route to Prague" odd phrasing. I would expect "A EuroCity train en route to Prague struck a part of a motorway bridge that had fallen onto the track near Studénka station and derailed, killing 8 people and injuring 64.
Tenses are mixed, too. Should be "There were 8 dead and 64 injured". Or "8 people died and 64 were injured". Etc etc.
Yes
9 August 2018 DYK Teuira Henry "a lost manuscript describing Tahitian history by using her English missionary grandfather's notes" it wasn't just any old "lost manuscript", it was her grandfather's lost manuscript, so it should be "her English missionary grandfather's lost manuscript.... using his notes..." Yes
Lyngsjö Church " the golden antependium of Lyngsjö Church" -> it's "gilt copper", "golden" only appears once, unreferenced in a caption.
I think it's referring to its colour rather than its material. How about "gold-coloured" instead of "golden"?
Why not just "gilt copper"?
Because it's boring? I'm just going to remove the descriptor entirely.
Yes
Vale Park, New Brighton " that brass bands have been a feature of Vale Park since its opening in 1899, when a brass band played..." no need to repeat "brass band", maybe "when one played..." Yes
OTD Image The image has no associated blurb Yes - replaced - see below
Battle of Mulhouse "France launched its first attack of the war ..." article says "which began on 7 August 1914"... Yes - Replaced with Nagasaki, both bolded articles are GA, has image
Sbarro restaurant suicide bombing "Fifteen people were killed and 130 others" MOS NUM (cats and dogs) comparable figures (all words or all figures, and don't start sentences with figures...)
Also " bomber attacked at a" no need for "at" here.
Yes
10 August 2018 DYK Carlos Hermosillo Arteaga I'm not really seeing why this is even of note. The article makes a suggestion that he might have unlawfully acquired these but isn't really clear. A lot of people own six houses.
Presumably not a lot of federal deputies own six houses?
No
Eveline Crone "... led The Netherlands to..." no need for capital T in the Netherlands Yes
Pennella exocoeti " on a flyingfish was" flying fish is not one word unless referring to a specific species by name Yes
OTD Expulsion of the Acadians Maritime provinces is piped to a redirect Yes - I moved the page itself from The Maritimes to Maritimes. The definite article didn't seem appropriate per WP:THE.
Louvre Why not also mention the 184 objets d'art that were also present on opening day? Yes
Operation Camargue The article seems to consistently italicise Camarge Yes
Suzanne Collins Date of birth is not in the provided reference Yes it is, [2] says "Born: 1962-08-10". Is it the date format you don't like? Would [3] do instead?
:I've switched it to a better reference.[4]  — Amakuru (talk) 10:11, 9 August 2018 (UTC)
It's fine now, the ref I looked at (currently [2]) was the one used inline to ref her birthdate and it wasn't in there.
You might have missed it because it was in the infobox. I did the same thing when I checking the article in the first place. howcheng {chat} 16:28, 9 August 2018 (UTC)
Bay of Fundy Campaign Has been moved and hence an ugly redirect is used for the bold target link now... Now fixed
TFA Bill McCann Gallipoli Campaign takes a capital C Yes
TFL Other links World Heritage Sites in Slovenia was moved a while ago (small s in site), and we don't "target" redirects so this should have been changed too Yes
12 August 2018 OTD Cleopatra Given the article says it's uncertain whether she committed suicide on 10 or 12 August, it seems a bit bold of OTD to make this definitive statement of fact
The last time the article appeared on OTD, it said August 12. howcheng {chat} 14:49, 11 August 2018 (UTC)
And that's relevant because....?
Just pointing out that it wasn't always incorrect and we're just noticing it now. howcheng {chat}
But if the article has more up to date understanding that her date of death is uncertain, whatever was said in the past is irrelevant really.
Yes, replaced with Battle of Halen
Quagga "the Artis Magistra zoo" why not use the correct title, per the article, of the " Natura Artis Magistra zoo"? Yes
Babrra massacre North-West Frontier Province in the blurb is a dab link Yes
Sue (dinosaur) "a Tyrannosaurus ever" well the article, numerous times, explains its a Tyrannosaurus Rex (i.e. the species itself, rather than just any old member of the genus Yes
TFP Cigaritis cilissa " endemic to the Middle East" well the article just says (unreferenced) that it's "found" in several countries, including Turkey (the only citation in the article mentions Syria and Kurdistan, not the other countries listed in the micro-stub article) Yes - removed any mention of its range. Should we really be having a TFP whose article consists of one line which doesn't actually agree with its source? Mind you, nothing surprises me any more. Black Kite (talk) 16:06, 11 August 2018 (UTC)
DYK Wood-Tikchik State Park " that the Wood-Tikchik State Park, the" no need for the first "the"... Yes
Grace Macurdy "...shaped the field of classics and the study of ancient history ..." a VERY bold claim which I'm struggling to see substantiated by the single source used to reference it A matter of opinion perhaps, but the source does say amongst other things that her work is still of "major intellectual consequence today" and she's acknowledged as a pioneer in the field, so arguably the description is merited. Gatoclass (talk) 07:44, 11 August 2018 (UTC)
Not really, that's Wikipedia (or at least DYK) synthesising. Stick to the known facts, rather than just making stuff up.
General A Chinese spy and a Chinese physicist featured in the same set? Replaced the physicist with Michael Martin (engineer). Gatoclass (talk) 08:21, 11 August 2018 (UTC)
Ironic that this is a dead dull replacement. Especially as there's no context for Martin. Millions of people are inspired to their careers through exposure to related media. So what?
I thought there might be a negative comment about this hook, but for some reason I found it appealing, I think partly because it was humanizing, and partly because I was curious as to what exactly he found appealing in those back issues (the answer is thankfully in the article and actually quite amusing). The alternative was the hook about his management of a billion-dollar project, which while clearly establishing his notability, I just found dull - probably because we have so many of that type of hook. So, while I figured some folks may not like this choice, I'm standing by it. Gatoclass (talk) 13:33, 11 August 2018 (UTC)
It needs context. How prominent is he?
Okay, I added some. Gatoclass (talk) 13:59, 11 August 2018 (UTC)
Q'ursha "hunting dog Q'ursha had eagle's wings," well according to the article, it was allegedly "born of either a raven or an eagle, and is sometimes depicted as having wings" so come on, let's not make even more stuff up. I mean "and a leap that stretched across the earth" isn't even mentioned in the article for the love of everything holy. Tweaked. Gatoclass (talk) 08:46, 11 August 2018 (UTC)
13 August 2018 OTD Maurice (emperor) "emperor Tiberius II Constantine named Maurice as his successor" well he was named by someone else (the senior judicial official), but in any case, what is referencing this? I see " Paul, III, ch. 15" but that appears to me to be unverifiable
"Named" does not necessarily mean "said aloud" .. it can also mean "designated", which is accurate. Nevertheless, replaced with Liberius (praetorian prefect). howcheng {chat} 04:29, 13 August 2018 (UTC)
Yes
Battle of Lewisham National Front is piped to a redirect Yes
TFP The Rape of the Daughters of Leucippus Surprise!!! None of the article is inline referenced, in particular claims used in the blurb such as "presently in the collection of the Alte Pinakothek in Munich, Germany" No
DYK Caption Rheinmaiden is already linked in the top hook, it doesn't need overlooking in the caption. Yes
Marie Lehmann (soprano) Article chronology is all over the place and doesn't match the RS given (e.g the backwards in time thing, the "and finally at the Vienna Court Opera from 1891 until 1896," claim which the RS (Grove Book of Opera Singers) clearly states as "from 1882 to 1896 etc etc). I guess that's what QPQ gives you, check the hook, bugger the rest of the article. Some work done (although still curious how it passed QPQ)
Robert Lebel (ice hockey) " inaugural class of three ice hockey halls of fame?" turns out two of these three are actual non-notable. I suppose I could write about myself being second-highest scorer for my club team one season based on that kind of notability. No - non-notable halls of fame are perfectly acceptable!!
Royden Park Basically self-promotional. There's no good reason for the word "fine" to be in the hook as it's primary sourced to the organisation themselves. And honestly, we want to put on our main page such an advert with prose like "many people are surprised at the power of the locomotives", "offering a pleasant display"? QPQ strikes again. A little chuckle in that in the UK in this context "fine" means "small"! I'm fine with it being removed! The other wording is a little clunky, i'm rather unfussed whether it is changed or deleted.
Chuckle away, but it's tautalogical since the gauge is already given. And you use "fine" along with all the other advertising in the other sense earlier in the article.
There was an edit conflict and I was going to qualify fine in this context meaning "small and detailed", perhaps fine could be switched to detailed? Szzuk (talk) 20:13, 12 August 2018 (UTC)
Resolved.
Badr Shirvani "received patronage from numerous rulers?" what makes this actually interesting is that the patronage came from different rulers at the same time. Thousands of individuals have received "patronage from numerous rulers" but simultaneously? Oh, and "present-day Republic of Azerbaijan" is just called "Azerbaijan", not "Republic of Azerbaijan"... Yes
14 August 2018 OTD Villasur expedition " intended to check French influence" since "check" can be interpreted in two very different ways (e.g. halt vs inspect), better to use a different phrasing for our international English-speaking readers Yes, slow the progress
General Seminoles, Pawnees and Otoes in one set, consecutive blurbs?
Hmm, I suppose that was a lot of North American blurbs in there. Replaced two of them. howcheng {chat} 22:46, 13 August 2018 (UTC)
Yes
Caption "Roosevelt and Churchill aboard USS Augusta (CA-31)" Should be "USS Augusta" and not sure the (CA-31) detail is required? Yes. Left CA-31 in as there are multiple boats with the same name. I'm not sure of the guideline surrounding main page caption linking, so if that's allowed, we can link it and remove the parentheses. Anarchyte (work | talk) 07:23, 13 August 2018 (UTC)
Sure it's allowed.
Linked. Gatoclass (talk) 17:31, 13 August 2018 (UTC)
DYK V bombers Hook is a complete mouthful. The article notes it much more concisely "During the Cuban Missile Crisis, each V force squadron kept one fully [nuclear-] armed aircraft and crew at 15 minutes' readiness". Concision!!
Gatoclass besides all the other errors you've ignored here, "crew at 15 minutes' readiness." i.e. it's "at" not "to readiness on 15 minutes' notice" -> "on 15 minutes' notice" is just nonsense.
I didn't ignore it, I set it aside because it looked potentially problematic and didn't find time to get back to it. I've given it a tweak now. Gatoclass (talk) 11:01, 14 August 2018 (UTC)
Yes (although error on the main page for 10 hours at least)
Ben Judd "American video game producer Ben Judd is fluent in Japanese, speaking the Kansai dialect?" Wow, an American who can speak Japanese?? That's FASCINATING.
How mundane. Mentioned at WT:DYK. Anarchyte (work | talk) 07:29, 13 August 2018 (UTC)
I gave it a tweak to put the emphasis on the dialect. Gatoclass (talk) 16:50, 13 August 2018 (UTC)
Yes.
Loggerheads Country Park "that Loggerheads Country Park has a corn mill powered by a water wheel?" well it has a water wheel which has been restored, but no mention in the article of it currently being an active corn mill using the power from the water wheel.
I added the word "restored" which I think makes the hook more interesting anyway. I don't see the need to do anything else as the hook doesn't say the mill is currently used to grind corn and I doubt many people would interpret it that way. Gatoclass (talk) 17:11, 13 August 2018 (UTC)
On reflection, I have changed "powered by" to "with" as the former is probably unnecessary anyway. Gatoclass (talk) 17:43, 13 August 2018 (UTC)
Yes (the "on reflection" edit changed the sense of the hook entirely to my way of thinking)
Psalm 138 " children's choir, choir, African" very odd wording indeed. I get it, sort of, but the phrasing is awful.
I changed the order of the choirs to avoid the odd-looking repetition. Not much else I can do since the source is unavailable to me. Gatoclass (talk) 17:17, 13 August 2018 (UTC)
Yes
TFP Filling station "also known under a wide variety of names," what is the point of this? And what's really fucked up about this is that we have one sentence about an obscure bird that no-one's likely to ever see, but an extensive paragraph about a "filling station" where "customers can purchase snacks and other goods" (REALLY?). TFP blurbs need SERIOUS help. No
15 August 2018 DYK Piano Sonata No. 2 (Chopin) "Piano Sonata No. 2, his first mature piano sonata" repetitive, and what is a "mature" sonata? It's not explained here or in the article. Yes. Removed the phrase about it being his first mature sonata, and the hook still stands without it.
Harold Spitznagel " that prominent South Dakota architect" why "prominent"? This term isn't used in the article at all, prominence, after all, is in the eye of the beholder. Yes. "Prominent" removed.
Patricia A. Gabow "using a system based on the Toyota Production System" actually, she used "lean manufacturing" which literally tens of thousands of companies have used to do just exactly the same thing. This is absolutely mundane, not remarkable or innovative in any sense, and has no interest to anyone. Unless of course we're being patronising enough to suggest this is notable because she's a woman....!!
Yes, but you don't necessarily associate a system used to manufacture vehicles with a public healthcare system, so the hook works for me. Gatoclass (talk) 21:24, 14 August 2018 (UTC)
Well that's where the lie is persisted, it's not based on Toyota Production System, it's based on "lean" (which itself is based on TPS) and any industry can use "lean". It's a zero hook.
I'm going to leave this one for now. I don't think it's actually incorrect anyway, as if a is based on b and b is based on c, then a can be said to be based on c. The hook isn't totally uninteresting either, per Gatoclass.  — Amakuru (talk) 08:56, 15 August 2018 (UTC)

OTD Victory over Japan Day Unverifiable, but even then, there is no coverage of commemoration in the UK outside of the lead half-sentence. Yes, removed
Raphael Morgan Article says he was "thought to be" the first Black Orthodox priest Yes
History of South Korea Blurb says "The Republic of Korea was established" but article opens with "The history of South Korea formally begins with its establishment on August 17, 1948, although Rhee Syngman had officially declared independence two days prior." so this is a little odd.
The article makes no mention of him declaring independence except that first sentence, and sources all say the country was established on August 15. howcheng {chat} 03:35, 15 August 2018 (UTC)
Yes, lead changed in aricle
ITN Ponte Morandi Death toll has been officially set at 26 for now, the 35 was unofficial and Wikipedia should know better... Yes
16 August 2018 DYK Barbara Haviland Minor "produced by OEMs in" don't use abbreviations without explaining them first, and actually I'm not even sure what this brings to the hook other than BLOAT. And it's not actually "her" refrigerant, she led the team which developed it.
So are you saying the hook is still correct even if you don't specify the vehicle producers as being "OEMs"?  — Amakuru (talk) 08:46, 15 August 2018 (UTC)
I'm saying it's not "her" refrigerant. She led the dev team. It's a "refrigerant of which she led the development". It's not "hers".
Well I've reworded a bit, so it's probably accurate now, although at the expense of being even more bloated. But as noted at WP:ERRORS, the OEMs bit is crucial because the source only gives us data for those.  — Amakuru (talk) 15:20, 16 August 2018 (UTC)
More on that very OEM issue at ERRORS now. Such a shame it’s taken nearly all day.
No, NOW NOTED AT ERRORS (some 20 hours later)....

John Zamet "that periodontist John Zamet was..." avoid false titles and link technical term Periodontology
So as a false title, you're suggesting "that periodontist John Zamet" is not a legitimate word order? It seems like we do that all over the place though, in today's DYK for example, with "... that ethnic Croat journalist Štefica Galić...", and "South Dakota architect..." - is there a specific rule against these in DYK or elsewhere, and why did you single out this one in particular? Thanks  — Amakuru (talk) 08:53, 15 August 2018 (UTC)
It's a BritEng thing, so for British subjects we (used to) avoid the use of false titles.
Ah OK, although if it is a British convention it doesn't seem to be observed much. In today's BBC news for example, we're told about "Student nurse Kara Watts"...[5]  — Amakuru (talk)™
Linked. Not sure about the false title issue. See question.
OTD Siege of Detroit "to the British Army." well the term "British Army" is never used in the article, but "British and Native Americans" seems to be. Yes, changed to "British–Native American force"
1906 Valparaíso earthquake "Chile, killing 3,886 people." Lead says this (unreferenced) but article/infobox claims 3,882. Yes, article/blurb changed to 3,882 per cited source
2015 Attock bombing Blurb says "killed at least 22 others at his home." but article lead says "The blasts killed the minister and at least 21 other people", needs thorough review for consistency and updates. Sources in the Shuja Khanzada also conflict with one another, and uncertain whether the total included Shuja Khanzada or not.
Final death toll appears to be 22, including him. I really have to stop picking articles that haven't been updated since the original writing. howcheng {chat} 16:23, 15 August 2018 (UTC)

17 August 2018 DYK Washington, My Home "replace its motto "Alki" with "For You and Me, a Destiny"" according to the article (a featured list) says the motto is Al-ki, not Alki. That FL also states that the motto is "fully unofficial" which is an important distinguishing factor between it and all other US state mottos and ought to be mentioned too. It is also worth noting that the song in question is already the "state song" for Washington... Yes
Great Island " that the 12,000 inhabitants of Great Island in Cork Harbour are served by a single 200-year-old road bridge?" well, and a rail bridge as well. And the article says "a population of between 12,000 and 14,000" not simply "12,000".
I'm tempted to pull this one and send it back to the nominator and reviewer - it needs some significant rewording to make it clear that (a) the qualifier "single" only applies to road bridges, and (b) that the population may be a bit more than 12,000. Thoughts?  — Amakuru (talk) 14:22, 16 August 2018 (UTC)
Well I get what the DYK is saying but it's misleading because they are also served by a railway line and a ferry service. It needs some more thinking.

Battle of Verneuil "in the bloody ..." really? Aren't most battles "bloody"? Seems unnecessary.
See Battle_of_Verneuil#Casualties. Apparently this was notably bloody. Anarchyte (work | talk) 12:56, 16 August 2018 (UTC)
Only in the context of the 100 years war. It's piffling compared to some of the truly bloody battles of the World Wars. It doesn't need the qualifier, or perhaps just stick to facts and say how many individuals were killed. See Battle of Verdun or Battle of Stalingrad or the Siege of Leningrad for actually "bloody" battles which don't resort to using such descriptors.

Scottish Reformation Catholicism as the national religion pipe to a redirect. It also says "adopted a Protestant" but the article says that the act was "approved", not adopted. Yes

Yes
Michael Phelps Blurb is far too long and clunky, has a pipe to a redirect for "4×100 m medley relay ", mentions "Olympic" three times, the second clause (the 14 golds) doesn't seem to be mentioned explicitly in the article etc...
Replaced with The Who / Tommy (album) - that's two GAs. I'd say it's probably their most famous gig of all time, but that's not NPOV. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 14:14, 16 August 2018 (UTC)
Going to revert this, because Phelps gets priority for being a 10th anniversary. Shortened to: "At the Beijing Summer Olympics, Michael Phelps set the records for the most individual gold medals won in a single games." The Who can be saved for next year, when it's the 50th anniversary (OTOH, Hurricane Camille was also the same year, but that's a problem we can deal with a year from now). howcheng {chat} 15:30, 16 August 2018 (UTC)

18 August 2018 DYK Capodimonte porcelain Where to begin? The snuffbox image and the factory are very lightly related (the caption or the pictured need something like "produced in the factory"), what does "sealife" mean here (there's no mention of "sealife" in the image description, and the article calls it "shell-shaped"), what is "paste" in this context? And "5 tons" should be "five tons". Yes
OTD Margaret of Valois "was wedded to" why not "married"?? Yes
Margaret of Valois Let's get the caption and the blurb names to be consistent... Yes
Fifth Test, 1948 Ashes series Really, given the blurb, this is the wrong target, which should, in fact, be Australian cricket team in England in 1948, and there should also be mention of The Invincibles in the blurb too.
The other article is already on May 15, so it can't get featured for today, but one could make the argument that May 15 isn't the best date for it in the first place. Something to consider for next year, I suppose. Added "The Invincibles" to the blurb. howcheng {chat} 17:15, 17 August 2018 (UTC)
This is still wrong. The link is an Easter egg link and is inappropriate. If it was re-worded such that "In winning the fifth Test of the 1948 Ashes series, Australia became the first Test team ...." would be fine. You simply can't pipe "became" to a Test match.
Australia won their fifth consecutive Test of the 1948 Ashes series, becoming the first Test cricket team to go undefeated in England, earning them the nickname "The Invincibles". Better? howcheng {chat} 22:33, 17 August 2018 (UTC)
Howcheng no, because they didn't win five consecutive Tests. This is an actual error. You should have taken my suggestion more seriously.
Think this should be better now? Harrias talk 19:38, 18 August 2018 (UTC)
Yes, thanks Harrias
TFP Indonesian rupiah Once again the blurb contains material that is completely unverifiable in the target article.
I have swapped this entry with the one for the following day, so there is a lifeline of 24 hours in which hopefully someone will resolve the issue. See WT:POTD.  — Amakuru (talk) 22:46, 16 August 2018 (UTC)
This is now in better shape. I have improved the article to include sourced material on the early history of the rupiah (it was apparently founded in 1946 not 1943.....) and also sourced the current USD exchange rate. It probably remains to verify Since 1950, it has had a lengthy history of inflation and revaluation as well as getting references for the descriptions of images for each of the seven notes included in the set.
Yes, with thanks
ITN Aretha Franklin A deliberate piped redirect for soul music? Plus the image must be changed now to Vajpayee.
@Amakuru: You promoted the blurb. Why'd you choose to omit the image? Anarchyte (work | talk)
@Anarchyte: no, no particular reason. I wasn't aware that the picture had to be the top story. Presumably that only applies if there is actually an available image. I've updated it just now, anyway.  — Amakuru (talk) 14:05, 18 August 2018 (UTC)
@Amakuru: I'm not sure it has to, but it's always nice to have the most recent person have the image over someone else to prevent any chance of confusion, even if there's a caption. I'm sure TRM could fill us in on whether or not there's a policy surrounding this, though. Anarchyte (work | talk) 15:18, 18 August 2018 (UTC)
It's not policy but simply good practice, especially when one image has been there a day or so and another is available.
Yes. Link fixed. Picture updated.
19 August 2018 DYK Caption A veritable mouthful, it's supposed to be succinct and concise, so just "Clay model for statue of St John of Nepomuk" would be more than ample

Telfair Hodgson " oldest continuously published literary quarterly" well the article just says "oldest continuously published literary journal" so suggest "quarterly" is replaced with "journal" to reflect the facts.
It's the article that is wrong, not the hook, so I have corrected the article. Gatoclass (talk) 22:06, 18 August 2018 (UTC)
(edit conflict)Actually, the Sewanee Review article said "the oldest journal of its kind", and the source itself says quarterly. So presumably "of its kind" means quarterly, but the fact was incorrectly copied across to the Hodgson article. Looks like Gatoclass has now done the fix in Hodgson as well, so we're good.

I don't see the need to be so specific. Gatoclass (talk) 22:45, 18 August 2018 (UTC)
Perhaps not, but it doesn't do any harm either. I've added the fact that it's on Makira.  — Amakuru (talk) 23:16, 18 August 2018 (UTC)
In my opinion, it weakens the hook, which is why I didn't make the change. But I'm not going to quibble about it now it's done. Gatoclass (talk) 23:23, 18 August 2018 (UTC)
Well, in my opinion in makes the hook factually accurate rather than sensationalist and misleading. Thanks Amakuru.

SethBling "an older yet even faster run by a third speedrunner" what a horrible hook, and actually it appears the "faster run" which was validated was actually on an emulator, which makes this hook (not just awful to read but) misleading.
I've tried to reword without butchering the thing too much (lest I get accused of anything by the nominators...) - I currently have it at ...that minutes after a world record was set for Super Mario World, SethBling completed a faster run, validating a technique used previously only on an emulator?. Does that work, The Rambling Man?  — Amakuru (talk) 21:45, 19 August 2018 (UTC)

Catherine-Nicole Lemaure "imprisoned overnight for refusing to perform?" actually, it appears she was imprisoned for performing deliberately badly, not for refusing to perform.

21 August 2018 DYK Alfons Tracki " the Gjakmarrja blood feuds" well according to the linked article, "Gjakmarrja" literally means "blood feud" so this sentence contains unnecessary redundancy. Concision people!
I don't think you could expect people to know what it means, and readers shouldn't have to click on the article to learn. Fish+Karate 09:48, 20 August 2018 (UTC)
But you shouldn't have both there. Either pipe the technical term to "blood feuds" or put "blood feuds" in parentheses. Either way we shouldn't be using two terms which are interchangeable in a sentence, it's very poor phrasing.
Parenthesized.
Brown-tail moth A poor hook, "can be wind-blown", is that applicable to just about anything (e.g. my trampoline was blown across my garden by the wind a few months ago)? And the link between being "wind-blown" and causing "rashes" (in humans, I assume?) is missing here. All in all, very weak. My favourite sentence was this: "Toxins in the hairs remain potent for up to three years", far more catchy.
I've had another go: "... that hairs shed by caterpillars of the brown-tail moth cause a rash in humans similar to that caused by poison ivy and, being wind-borne, can do so without direct contact with the animal?". Also provided direct cites in the article for the assertions mentioned in the hook.  — Amakuru (talk) 08:31, 21 August 2018 (UTC)

Scarface (1932 film) " the poor performance of the 1932 film Scarface at the box office" well the article says it took $600k which is pretty damn good in 1932, and qualifies it by saying " Scarface had more of a financial success than some of Hughes's other films at the time" And saying it was "unavailable for nearly 50 years" goes against the article which says "except for occasional release prints "... 22 August 2018 DYK Gavin Buckley "... that the mayor of Annapolis, Maryland thinks of himself as Australian?" needs a comma after Maryland per MOS. And I'm really not sure about this hook at all. He grew up in Australia, and one imagines that pretty much most people who grew up in Australia would think of themselves as being Australian. What's the point here?
Made some suggestions at WT:DYK. howcheng {chat} 23:19, 21 August 2018 (UTC)
Have added the comma. I think the fact an American citizen and mayor of a state capital still sees himself as an Aussie is not the most insipid hook DYK has seen recently. Granted it's a remarkably low bar.
It is a pretty amazing hook in its utter absurdity.--WaltCip (talk) 19:45, 21 August 2018 (UTC)
23 August TFP Belshazzar's Feast Target article contains exposed and broken refs, and unverifiable claims (e.g. date of completion, story of God writing inscription etc)
I think everything in the POTD prose is now verified including the date (corrected to a range, as it is not certain exactly when it was painted) and the meaning of the text. I've put the exposed refs into ref tags, but don't have time to actually verify and correct them right now.  — Amakuru (talk) 08:54, 22 August 2018 (UTC)
Yes, should be ok now. Have run through what I can of the references (don't own the books). The bit about it being stolen is, as best I can tell, nonsense. Fish+Karate 09:23, 22 August 2018 (UTC)
Belshazzar's Feast - New issue A footnote explains the mistranscription as being between a nun and a zayin. I'm alright with that, except a) the zayin looks more like a vav and b) there's another Wordpress (reliable?) source cited in the article that says the mistranscription is between a final mem and a samech, which is such a subtle difference I didn't even notice it. --Dweller (talk) Become old fashioned! 14:47, 22 August 2018 (UTC)
@Dweller: I got confused by the issue of the translation myself, when looking into this earlier. It certainly seems like something that should be cleared up in the article. However, from what TRM said yesterday, he doesn't currently vet the target article for overall issues, only the contents of the prose actually on the main page. And this does not address the transliteration issue at all. So is there anything you think we should act upon in this instance?  — Amakuru (talk) 21:26, 22 August 2018 (UTC)
POTD articles are regularly utter garbage or sub-stub. At the very least everything in the blurb on the main page should be verifiable in the target article. If we started vetting to the whole target article to the same level of scrutiny as we (or I) do for OTD, DYK, ITN, TFA and TFL, we'd probably only run POTD twice a week.
Yes. No action for now.
DYK Nardouw pincushion "Nardouw pincushion" (as used in the hook) is mentioned but once in the article, and not inline referenced. A standard problem with these DYKs I'm afraid.

Aktion T4 " ordered the official termination" the article says he ordered a suspension of the "program". It's also worth noting how many victims there were, i.e. at least 275,000 killed. Changed to "suspension". The number of deaths is - obviously - very vague, though - best way to write this?
Hurricane Andrew Three piped redirects in the blurb (landfall, South Florida and Category 5)
Also, the blurb has " third most powerful " but the article lists it as "intensity" rather than power ("Intensity is measured solely by central pressure") so perhaps use the terminology within the article itself.
No.
25 August 2018 TFP Mexican peso The reverse image doesn't even appear in the target article, and none of the blurb is verifiable in the target article either.
I've corrected a small mistake in the blurb re continuation of the peso to the present day (actually there was a new version in 1993)... and otherwise referenced all the other bits of the blurb in the article and included the FP in the article itself. Almost in time, it's only 15 minutes after it went live...

DYK Averroes' theory of the unity of the intellect Not sure why the caption is centred, it's always just left as left-aligned, regardless of its length (like all other captions on the main page). And since it's a painting, we normally have the artist and year in there.
Oh, and no need for "specifically" in the hook, concision people!!
Yes
William Preucil Article contains bare URLs which is contrary to DYK rule D3
Also, use of "major" in the hook is weaselish and not verifiable.
Yes
Spire (Seattle building) "condo tower" this isn't exactly encyclopaedic in tone, it's a "condominium" after all, per the multiple uses in the article. Just because it's DYK, we don't have to resort to slang.
Also, "Vanke's interest in the project was spurred " (to me) does not equate to "funding was secured". But DYK hooks just seem to make stuff up these days.
Changed to ... that one of the financers of the Spire, a residential building in Seattle, joined the project as a result of a state visit by Chinese president Xi Jinping?  — Amakuru (talk) 08:24, 24 August 2018 (UTC)

OTD Matthew Webb "completing the journey in 21 hours and 45 minutes." well the source says he left just "seconds" before 1 and made Calais at 10.40, so that's 21 hrs 40 mins. Yes
26 August 2018 TFP Madame Moitessier Once again, several claims in the blurb aren't verifiable using reliable sources in the target article. Recurring theme.
Since the unfortunate departure of the POTD coordinator I've been working on the articles and blurbs for TFPs which didn't have schedules yet, including the 27th, 29th and 30th. So hopefully you may find those to be better verified when they come around. I hadn't been looking at those that were already scheduled though, I didn't think I would need to....  — Amakuru (talk) 11:04, 25 August 2018 (UTC)
OK, I think this is good now. I initially sourced things to the National Gallery website but I suspect they may have actually copied the text from our own article in 2009, including an apparently incorrect fact about Titian's "Portrait of a Lady", which I've removed from the POTD blurb too. If I'm correct, that's evidence that you can get some made-up facts out there by including them in a Wikipedia article, waiting for a reliable source to plagiarise it, then using that as the citation.  — Amakuru (talk) 14:03, 25 August 2018 (UTC)

DYK Margot Fonteyn "danced for 44 years " well, she started dancing at the age of four apparently, and didn't officially retire until she was 61, so she danced for 57 years. Once again, the problem with even simple synthesis (I'm not sure how this meets the DYK rules of the hook being explicitly mentioned and referenced inline, unless I'm missing it).
Well it turns out that (1) it presumably refers to her tenure as prima ballerina, and (2) the figure should be 45 years according to a source I found,[8] Goes to show that WP:CALC has its limitations and should probably be avoided in DYK hooks.  — Amakuru (talk) 14:47, 25 August 2018 (UTC)

Murder of the family of Robert Einstein " soldiers in World War II?" no mention in the article prose at all of World War II curiously.

Ina Hartwig "responsible for literary criticism" contravenes DYK rules (like the above two) because the article says clearly "responsible for literature" not "literary criticism"... These really are basic tenets of the DYK process being overlooked time and again.
Tweaked. Gatoclass (talk) 15:22, 25 August 2018 (UTC)
I see Amakuru altered the article and hook, changing it to "literature editor". Google translates the term to "features editor". I changed the hook to "on the editorial staff" to be on the safe side, but I do not speak German and am prepared to be overruled by somebody who does. Gatoclass (talk) 16:21, 25 August 2018 (UTC)
"am prepared to be overruled", and people say I have a problem with tone...
Undoubtedly I get the tone wrong from time to time, who doesn't? But in my case it's occasional and almost always unintentional. Gatoclass (talk) 17:01, 25 August 2018 (UTC)
(edit conflict)There are several sources saying she was literature editor or head of literature,[9][10][11] while some also use the original term that we had here of "literary critic".[12][13] I'm not sure what the Redakterin im Feuilleton means in a German context. Perhaps she worked in the features section but not actually as features editor? @Gerda Arendt: do you have any insight into the best term to use here? Thanks  — Amakuru (talk) 16:54, 25 August 2018 (UTC)
Once decided, please make sure we don't use different terms with different meanings between the article and hook, thanks.
Yes indeed, it doesn't matter what she really was, as long as we say the same thing in both places and can back it up with a good source. Verifiability in a post-truth world...  — Amakuru (talk) 17:00, 25 August 2018 (UTC)
Pinged, back from another concert. Feuilleton is for culture in general, she was the head of the the literature section (part of it, which is a lot criticism of literature. My problem is that I am not sure of the proper terms in English. Best solution I see: return to the original hook, about Kulturderzenentin in Frankfurt, - which IS the more interesting position, - just one of the reviewers didn't like it. - I'd not mind postponing the hook, - why have three women in one set, and then days of not a single one. I have Psalm 47 in the same set, - wasn't that another thing better avoided? The Psalm is date-related, Hartwig is not. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:35, 25 August 2018 (UTC)

2019 United States FIBA Basketball World Cup team "after FIBA changes" shouldn't this be "rule changes" or something? Or did FIBA itself actually change....?? Magdalena Mouján "censored by the Spanish government" article says more accurately "was blocked by the Franco regime"
"Censored" is more easily understood IMO and is an accurate description. I have changed "Spanish government" to "Franco regime" as I think that makes the hook a little more interesting. Gatoclass (talk) 15:54, 25 August 2018 (UTC)
Gatoclass No, not really, censored and blocked actually mean different things.
Okay, since censorship can often mean the suppression of only parts of a work, which presumably is what you are referring to, I changed it to "blocked" as requested. Gatoclass (talk) 16:33, 25 August 2018 (UTC)
That's not what it "can" mean, that's what it "does" mean. Really, DYK hooks need to stop making stuff up that simply isn't in the article. It's been notably bad in this set.
While most dictionaries appear to define it as such, one can find broader definitions. Wikipedia itself defines it as "the suppression of speech, public communication, or other information, on the basis that such material is considered objectionable, harmful, sensitive, or "inconvenient" as determined by a government[1] or private institution". However, I'm not going to quibble about this, as I accept that "blocked" is a less ambiguous term in the given context. Gatoclass (talk) 16:55, 25 August 2018 (UTC)
Yes, but what's troubling is this increasing tendency in DYK hooks to simply use made up terminology which either misleads or is simply inaccurate. It needs to stop, and the quibbling over corrections (to (a) address this obfuscation and (b) comply with the actual DYK rules) needs to stop too.

Founded in 878???
Why, when would you say it was founded? I wasn't alive myself in the 9th century, so I don't have any first-hand knowledge of this. There was a previous institution founded in around 840, if that's what you mean, but the present abbey was founded in 878,[14][15] and the blurb clarifies that it doesn't mean the earlier date by saying "on its present site".  — Amakuru (talk) 13:41, 27 August 2018 (UTC)
I didn't really doubt it, but IT WASN'T REFERENCED!!!! Thanks.

DYK El Tatio "highest in the world" - according to the article it's highest "together with Sol de Mañana", so it's somewhat misleading to omit that
The hook was changed to "equal highest". What does that mean? Please change it to "one of the highest". Yoninah (talk) 17:09, 26 August 2018 (UTC)
"One of the highest" means there are a few which are higher. "Equal highest" means there are one or more of the same height but none higher, which seems to be what's needed here. Bazza (talk) 15:15, 27 August 2018 (UTC)

Gordon W. McKay "that in 1960, Gordon W. McKay was chosen by Bend, Oregon, as its Senior Citizen of the Year?" this is perhaps the most banal hook ever. A non-notable award from a barely notable community to a barely notable individual. Is this really the best that can be done? An overt and brash refusal to adhere to one of DYK's principles: "interesting to a broad audience".

30 August 2018 DYK St. Peter's Church, Malmö Hook says " largest town church in Denmark?" but the article is very cautious and clear and includes the caveat "(excluding cathedrals)" because presumably some towns had cathedrals as their "town churches". Oh, and the note about it being part of Denmark is unreferenced. Oh, and the reference at the end of the hook sentence needs a page number/range because we shouldn't be hunting through large PDFs to verify claims. QPQ!
The "excluding cathedrals" is not right, at 105m it was the tallest church/cathedral in Denmark in the 1300s (and would still be today, if it were still in Denmark - the largest church in Denmark is 96m tall). Other two bits fixed also. Fish+Karate 12:58, 29 August 2018 (UTC)

Doug Gurr Promoted with a bare URL, DYK rule D3 ignored, QPQ fail
Once it gets this far, if everything else checks out, I think a QPQ omission shouldn't bar it. It's important to DYK process but not to Mainpage --Dweller (talk) Become old fashioned! 09:16, 29 August 2018 (UTC)
Agreed, it's TRM's page and all but if the purpose of this page really is to improve/maintain the main page then QPQ should be irrelevant. Fish+Karate 09:56, 29 August 2018 (UTC)
I may be wrong, but I think when TRM says "QPQ fail" he means that whoever reviewed this nomination (as part of their own QPQ) did a poor job, and that therefore the QPQ system is not working properly. Note that Edwardx did perform their own QPQ here, so there's no issue in that regard. And also agree that has nothing to do with the main page.  — Amakuru (talk) 10:11, 29 August 2018 (UTC)
The point here is that if I continually see QPQ being ignored i.e. the DYK rules not being observed, then it's a failure of the project and its processes. Most of those rules are in place to prevent poor quality guff getting to the main page, such as crappy unformatted references. The process should not promote items which don't comply with the process rules to the main page, and that applies to all of the main page.

Friends "bandleader"? Not in the article, instead it uses the correct terms "producer and principal songwriter". And in any case, it was Wild Honey (which preceded Friends) which saw Wilson reduce his involvement (to whit: Wild Honey saw reduced involvement from the group's producer and principal songwriter, Brian Wilson.), so this hook is double duff.
The hook still isn't right. Friends came after Wild Honey, by which point Wilson had already reduced his involvement (according to the article)

Bob Nadin "referred to as the "pope of the rules"," well, actually Bob made this claim himself (a primary source no less). We don't usually use primary sources, especially when they're made by individuals making claims about themselves.
I think this can be salvaged. People are reliable sources about themselves. How about "that referee Bob Nadin referred to himself as the "pope of the rules". I'd actually be more worried about us offending Catholics, but NOTCENSORED would be waved at that. --Dweller (talk) Become old fashioned! 08:37, 29 August 2018 (UTC)
The point here is that he didn't say it himself, he claimed someone else said it about him. It's a primary claim and shouldn't be the basis of a hook. Also, see WP:PRIMARY.
Yes, in that it's now accurate ("said he was referred to..."). There's nothing in the DYK rules about primary claims not being part of a hook. Fish+Karate 13:51, 30 August 2018 (UTC)

LeBron James Jr. "before he was 11?" fundamentally, the issue is, once again, a discrepancy between article and hook: the article just says "In June 2016, ESPN reported that he held offers to play college basketball for Kentucky and Duke.[18]", (no mention of "before he was 11" and the cite says he had "offers" when 10 but not necessarily those from Duke/Kentucky, those are referred to separately in the article.
