In 2007, an unpleasant template called {{BannedMeansBanned}} was created, displaying the following message:

Wikipedia's banning policy states that any edits made in violation of a ban may be reverted. By banning an editor, the community has decided that the broader problems with a banned user's participation outweigh the benefits of their editing, and their edits may be reverted without any further reason.

This template is now, finally, being deleted. I applaud the decision, but as a result, Wikipedia's history will inadvertently be sanitized because of the limitations of the history interface. Once all non-substituted uses of it have been removed, the only way to find out where they had been are will be to examine the editing history of the editors making the removals. In the interests of transparency and aiding future historians of Wikipedia, here's a list of pages where someone claiming to represent "the community" had added the template. This list is almost certainly incomplete as the result of removals that have already happened.

• This template is not intended to be placed on the user or talk pages of all banned users.
  • It is intended to be used only when ban evasion through sockpuppetry is discovered. Its purpose is to remind the banned user that they are banned regardless of what identity they may choose to try and use to evade the ban, and to inform other users that this user was banned under another identity and that therefore any and all contributions by them may be reverted or deleted without further cause.
  • If found being used outside of these limited circumstances it should be removed.
