Alexander Roslin

I trimmed and tweaked that final section some. The references still need work--the last four are incomplete, inconsistent. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 02:52, 21 February 2014 (UTC)

Sorry, I got a little distracted yesterday. I may get a chance today, but if I don't I definitely fix it over the weekend. Thanks, Matty.007 08:44, 21 February 2014 (UTC)

Winter Olympics DYK

Hey Matt! I see you're quite active in nominating Winter Olympics-related DYKs. I myself am trying to get the Bolshoy Ice Dome article to be featured on Sunday (in time for the men's ice hockey final) and have notified the DYK talkpage. If, however, my nom goes unreviewed by the end of today, could I trouble you to have a look at it? Cheers! —Bloom6132 (talk) 08:35, 21 February 2014 (UTC)

I'll have a look, it's not as short notice as some of mine have been... That DYK will get you a lot of Cup points! Thanks, Matty.007 08:54, 21 February 2014 (UTC)
Thanks a million Matt! I owe you a big favour in return. As a sidenote, the Cup bonus won't be that big, given that most of the interwiki articles were created after January 1. —Bloom6132 (talk) 09:15, 21 February 2014 (UTC)
No problem, I've had a few last minute noms... I didn't realise the links had to be there before January 1. You still get 10 points for a large article though don't you? Thanks, Matty.007 09:46, 21 February 2014 (UTC)
Yeah, the rule was made because one could game the rules throughout the tournament by simply creating foreign-language stubs in other wikis to inflate the multiplier. I know at least one user this year who was called out even though he made stubs himself before 31 December 2013 – the judges ruled that since those articles on the other wikis were still stubs, it appeared that he was trying to artificially inflate the importance of those articles. As for the Ice Dome article, it's under 5,120 characters, so no 5 "extra base points". However, the pre-2008 status gives me 5 bonus points, so coupled with the 1.4× multiplier (2 pts), it'll give me 12 points in total. If all 24 existing interwikis were included, it would've given me a 1.8× (4 pts) bonus and only one interwiki off from 2×. Cheers! —Bloom6132 (talk) 13:31, 21 February 2014 (UTC)
OK, thanks for explaining that. Best, Matty.007 20:16, 21 February 2014 (UTC)

March GOCE copyedit drive

Notes from the Guild of Copy Editors

The March 2014 backlog elimination drive is a month-long effort to reduce the backlog of articles in need of copyediting. The drive begins on March 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and ends on March 31 at 23:59 (UTC). Our goals are to copyedit all articles tagged in December 2012 and January 2013 and to complete all requests placed in January 2014. Barnstars will be awarded to anyone who copyedits at least one article, and special awards will be given to the top five in the following categories: number of articles, number of words, number of articles over 5,000 words, number of articles tagged in December 2012 and January 2013 and the longest article. We hope to see you there!

WikiCup 2014 February newsletter

And so ends the most competitive first round we have ever seen, with 38 points required to qualify for round 2. Last year, 19 points secured a place; before that, 11 (2012) or 8 (2011) were enough. This is both a blessing and a curse. While it shows the vigourous good health of the competition, it also means that we have already lost many worthy competitors. Our top three scorers were:

  1. Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions), a WikiCup newcomer whose high-quality scans of rare banknotes represent an unusual, interesting and valuable contribution to Wikipedia. Most of Godot's points this round have come from a large set of pictures used in Treasury Note (1890–91).
  2. Oh, better far to live and die / Under the brave black flag I fly... Adam Cuerden (submissions), a WikiCup veteran and a finalist last year, Adam is also a featured picture specialist, focusing on the restoration of historical images. This month's promotions have included a carefully restored set of artist William Russell Flint's work.
  3. United States WikiRedactor (submissions), another WikiCup newcomer. WikiRedactor has claimed points for good article reviews and good articles relating to pop music, many of which were awarded bonus points. Articles include Sky Ferreira, Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus and "Wrecking Ball" (Miley Cyrus song).

Other competitors of note include:

After such a competitive first round, expect the second round to also be fiercely fought. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 1 but before the start of round 2 can be claimed in round 2, but please do not update your submission page until March (UTC). Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Template:Did you know nominations/HMS Cressy (1899)

Matty.007, I have just posted a note to this nomination template. Basically, you nominated this as a Good Article DYK before it had been passed as a GA—you're only supposed to nominate within five days after listing, yet the GAN was still ongoing on February 26. Worse, Cas Liber passed it on February 28, before it became a Good Article. (It passed about 10 hours later.) I'm hoping both of you can explain what went wrong on the nomination template. Since the article has only just become eligible, I'm not worried about delaying the promotion by a day or two while we figure this out.

I'd like to ask you to be more careful when you nominate articles by others for DYK. Thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 03:02, 1 March 2014 (UTC)

Request copyedit

Hey Matt! Can I request for you to copyedit some sentences in Global F.C.? I'm planning for it to achieve GA status. Any copyedit would be great! Thanks! FairyTailRocks (talk) 09:08, 8 March 2014 (UTC)

OK, I'll have a look at it within a few days. Do you mind if I help with the GAN when you do it? Thanks, Matty.007 11:11, 8 March 2014 (UTC)
Do you mean a reviewer for the article? Well sure! I will leave you a message if I am ready to submit for GA promotion. And one more thing, can you watchlist Global F.C.? There is an IP editor who removed some sections/parts from it earlier, and I don't want to vandalize it again because this week I am very busy with my exams. Thanks again! FairyTailRocks (talk) 12:46, 8 March 2014 (UTC)
FairyTailRocks: I was meaning help with issues that came up, helping fix things. I have finished the copy edit, and left a couple of tags on the article where I wasn't sure what it meant. Thanks, Matty.007 12:50, 8 March 2014 (UTC)
Sorry, I misunderstood. Anyways, thank you for the c/e, and sure I will contact you if there are problems with the article. I will try my best to fix some tags you left and hopefully promote it to GA. Cheers! FairyTailRocks (talk) 13:00, 8 March 2014 (UTC)

Mick Brennan (alpine skier), Ben Sneesby and James Whitley (alpine skier), though Whitley may need some more work to bring it up to DYK status. FruitMonkey (talk) 12:18, 8 March 2014 (UTC)
Did you have any combined hooks in mind? Thanks, Matty.007 12:23, 8 March 2014 (UTC)
I couldn't think of a good combined hook, but you are welcome to suggest one. Noms are at: Template:Did you know nominations/Mick Brennan (alpine skier), Template:Did you know nominations/Ben Sneesby, and Template:Did you know nominations/James Whitley (alpine skier). Please can you source "Whitley was born without both hands and despite multiple operations, fingers constructed for both his limbs have failed to gain enough nerve or muscle function" in James Whitley? Thanks, Matty.007 18:02, 8 March 2014 (UTC)
  • Thanks for the Barnstar Matty, I'll polish it up and put in pride of place in my gallery. I have also started an article for the final British Winter Para-athlete, Anna Turney, but it's starting to get late and wine is beckoning, I tend to stop editing for my own sake when that happens. FruitMonkey (talk) 20:07, 8 March 2014 (UTC)
    • Sorry, I was just shutting up shop yesterday evening. DYK nom is at Template:Did you know nominations/Anna Turney. Thanks, Matty.007 12:05, 9 March 2014 (UTC)
      • Hi Matty, you asked me a few days ago if there was an infosport link for all the athletes, and I missed the message. The answer is yes, there is. Here are all the British athletes, but all competitors for all nations have an article here. It's a great resource lifted from the official Olympics database, which is not useable as it does not display a web address for the athletes, as its based on a drop down. Hope it helps. FruitMonkey (talk) 19:21, 10 March 2014 (UTC)

BLP age question

Thanks for taking that question forward, as I had been slapped down for including a minor's age when I was setting up articles for British Para-athletes last summer, some of them between the ages of 14 and 16. I don't think it changes the article too much, but I tend to err on the side of caution. It's good to get a clearer answer. Cheers FruitMonkey (talk) 19:43, 8 March 2014 (UTC)
