• The above is obscure. Something struck me as odd about "Many ... believe in animism and are superstitious and believe in witchcraft and magic, but some also have Christian or Islamic beliefs." It seems to link animism with superstition, and to separate superstition, witchcraft and magic from Christian beliefs. To some, the link would be questionable, and others would question the separation. I looked at this one and thought maybe I should add to it, then got sidetracked, looked again and thought maybe not, but never got round to responding, then did a quick check that immediately brought up Encountering Eloyi, which muddies the whole picture. Not a problem, if you can get to one of the athletes, there's still (so far) a working search bar there for the current ones. E.g., here. I have been able to programmatically get to and get the results from typing something into that bar. Your Alcatraz work is fantastic! I've been thinking about the Alcatraz template. Until I added Citadel, all the entries were related to Alcatraz during its federal penitentiary period. The citadel was from the military history period; I think it's the only entry from that time. The library one is a little iffy. It's sourced to a federal archive, but there is no information about the original author. Considering that it was a federal prison, it seems likely to be PD-USgov, but we can't really say for sure.(Theoretically it could be a press photo included in the federal historical archive, for example.) I searched for more info about that archive ("interpretation negative collection"), but didn't find anything. If you're serious about using the photo, it might be worth contacting them about the contents of the archive and forwarding what you find to OTRS.

Re dining hall, there's a photo on this page by one Carl Sundstrom, who is described in contemporary press accounts as a records clerk at Alcatraz.[1] (i also found some recent books etc describing him as a guard; maybe he held both positions.) In any event, given that Alcatraz was a federal prison when the photos were taken, he'd certainly have been a federal employee in the course of his employment, so the photo would be Pd-USgov. Collaboration

Dear Dr. Blofeld,

Thank you very much for the welcome both you and Rosie have given me to continue with our old association of writing DYKs. Rosie has made a very nice gesture of dedicating her 505th DYK (a joint article with you), which was also my last land mark number when I stopped editing on wiki last August 2011 due to illness. Vacha Dam

Hi Dr. Blofeld! It's great that you guys are working on a detailed Bulgaria-related article once again. The Bulgarian Wikipedia article is about an enterprise which began the construction of the Vacha Dam in the interwar period (1920–1937). The enterprise apparently built a hydroelectric plant (first pic). And while this isn't stated in any article, it seems that the modern dam was built at the place of the old one. I'll have to do some research on that.

As for sources:

• This newspaper article has some technical data
• This newspaper article has some more facts + some curious stuff about huge catfish that inhabit the reservoir
• This article documents some repairs done 5 years ago

I'll see what I can add from these and possibly other sources in Bulgarian myself this evening, unless something comes up.

I think that this might make you only the second person here, other than Newyorkbrad, to have an award specifically named for him, and, honestly, I can't think of many people more deserving than the two of you. Oh, BTW, I am slowly working on a list of reference books, and replied on my talk page. I don't think you know just how many there are, actually. I have found an old 1986 volume listing a lot of those published to that date, and will try to get together a list of the encyclopedia type sources it lists maybe later this week. But there have been at least a few hundred issued per year since then, and getting a list of all of them would take rather a lot of time. Thanks John! I'm going to personal see to the Bibliography of encyclopedias I think when I have more time. We do have various lists of encyclopedias but I literally want as full a bibliography of anything A-Z like of encyclopedias or biographical dictionaries of any language formatted like Bibliography of Hindi cinema as possible as in the quest for the "sum" of knowledge I think we need to have a record of as many such books as possible and would be important in working towards what is missing. It would be invaluable for research I think but it will be pretty demanding and an ongoing building process much like the project itself. I frequently find highly valuable encyclopedias and dictionaries in google books in foreign languages which we have poor coverage of and such should be listed on here I think as much as possible. Congratulations from me too. What amazes me is that you not only manage to succeed with all those DYKs but you also produce many excellent full length articles in parallel while helping others on a wide variety of topics. But you and John Carter are right about the need to have a better bibliography of encyclopedias. I've just been looking once again at List of encyclopedias and the other lists displayed there and am really surprised at how many are missing for the various languages - including many available online. (Just in the past week I have, for example, drawn on Dizionario Biografico degli Italiani and Dictionnaire historique de la Suisse (fully trilingual in German, French and Italian). There are in fact WP articles on both of these but as far as I can see they are not in the lists! - see Dizionario Biografico degli Italiani and Dictionnaire historique de la Suisse). I tried to compile a List of Danish online encyclopedic resources a couple of years ago but ran into trouble on the grounds that I could not include items in the list unless there were separate Wikipedia articles on each one. This in turn caused a problem as I was advised many were not notable enough to be included in the EN wiki. That might also explain why so many of the encyclopedias from Italy, Switzerland, Germany, etc. are simply not listed. It's a pity, especially as people often find it difficult to find pertinent references for biographies and the like. Thanks. Yeah its the biographical dictionaries more than anything in foreign languages like Catalan architects and that which we really need to note. There is a massive Chilean dictionary of biography in Spanish too which is accessible in the states in google books I think and we are missing at least half the entries. A simple list of encyclopedias ordered by theme isn't a good research tool and it doesn't link to them online with isbn numbers either. We need the most comprehensive list of encyclopedias/biographical dictionaries we can compile. It'll be a gradual thing of course but I'm going to make a start on it in the next few days. I'll begin with the lists of encyclopedias and put them in alpha order and then add those which are listed on Credo. Then browsing google books and such from there... You did good work on notable dresses associated with royalty and others. Blofeld is perhaps more associated with cats than dogs but the Bond and royal connections of Monty (Queen Elizabeth's Dog) may interest you in a similar way. Ha I'll look later. I like quirky topics which have an abundance of sources. They make wikipedia much more valuable. How dare they delete an article on a corgi. Sadly lacking some articles

I was doing some reading on "The political economy of the Slave Ship" for class when I read about "Ansa Sasraku" [sic?]. In attempting to search for more information about him I searched for Akwamu. Both that page and List of rulers of the Akan states of Akwamu and Twifo-Heman have a table containing a large list of rulers who should really have articles. Care to work on any of those? I wouldn't treat those articles like the Bible though. The source I'm reading mentions "Ahenesa (Akwamuhene Ansa Sasraku)" and it seems like it refers to him as Ahenesa throughout, that isn't even mentioned in the Wikipedia article. At the same time, my source only mentions it with quotes and I do not know where they are quoted from but they appear to be period. Considering the spelling of the 17th and 18th centuries, it is plausible that new information is more correct. (RV)130.91.93.243 (talk) 20:56, 18 September 2012 (UTC)

Hi, some good things about it. But to me the headings are too start, especially the icon to the left of each; and the secondary links need to be removed in the text for all but the FP. Why? Maybe because Fram is not the sort of editor who can treat fellow editors with respect. Thanks, but Fram still thinks of himself as the Warden (Alcatraz or Traffic warden indeed) of Wikipedia whose duty it is to protect the greater good. He doesn't realize how much of an asshole he comes across as in the process. Yeah it makes it so easy. Its a google book ref maker and search tool. You visit an unsourced/poorly sourced article. Search the title in google books, find a url verifying it, paste it into the ref maker and you have a citations ready to add straight to the article. You can see my User:Dennis Brown/common.js for the lines to add. It adds two options in a drop down menu just left of TW, and the one will take any sloppy link from google books, clean it up, fill in the blanks, and turn it into a beautifully formatted citation. Let me see if I can get this right. Someone (or something), with no warning that I saw, removed your excellent picture of John Angel (sculptor) from its infobox. I just sent the wikicopyright folks a permission slip from Jon Angel, who gave the picture to me in 2005. I also posted it (minus Jon's address and email) at the larger version of the picture. I believe (and so many of my beliefs are suspect) that this frees up your detail. Is there an easy way for you to post it back? Bristol Hotel

Like you, I have prepared articles on many historic sites and buildings. I find the subject fascinating, an interest we appear to share. That said, I'm not sure which edit summaries you find to be accusatory and would be happy to discuss if you can be specific. I do think that, absent special circumstances, room rate information has no place in a Wikipedia article on a historic hotel. The same applies to the fact that a hotel does or does not have common tourist amenities like a pool. These sorts of tidbits, in my opinion, would be appropriate to a travel wiki, but not to a Wikipedia article. Given the heightened scrutiny that may result from the uproar over Gibraltarpedia, it is particularly important that articles about Gibraltar hotels be written in a manner that does include the tone or typical content of a travel guide. My goal in editing the Bristol article was initially to make sure that such travel guide-type information was not present, but I ended up becoming fascinated by the hotel's history and adding a fair bit about that. I did take a look at the article on the Ritz Paris and view the room rate information there differently. Since the information appears in a section discussing that hotel's reputation as "reputedly the most expensive hotel in Paris," rate information falls into the "special circumstances" category where the information is notable in its own right. Topics in film

Hello, hope you've been doing well! Thanks for your help at List of films featuring diabetes. I created that and List of films featuring home invasions as part of my research for Panic Room. I've been thinking about focusing more on general topics in film. I think there are two possible approaches—list articles like you've seen, and regular articles like what I've listed at User:Erik/List of topics in film. I think that User:Erik/Alcoholism in film might be my first foray (if I can keep this drive going). This set of topics would help establish relationships between film articles, I think, especially with "See also" sections for back-and-forth navigation. Regarding your message icw Ludwig Gies, I am sorry for appearing to criticise your article, but it IS a mechanical translation, and I don't see the point of putting up articles in that form. The link you gave me is presumably to indicate the number of interesting articles still awaiting translation from German (which I do speak/write, but I have my own hit list); in my opinion however a stub in good English with an Expand tag pointing to the German original is far more effective and appropriate. The machine translations back it easier for Gerda to correct rather than starting a translation from scratch and writing everything out. It would be different if I just intended leaving the machine translated article as it is. But we don't.
