T:DYK

I have for some time been a close watcher of the Main Page, and I believe that I have made numerous interventions through WP:ERRORS to prevent poor grammar, poor semantics, incomplete explanations, comments unsupported by sources and those that break our MoS, especially ENGVAR. While I have been doing that, I have been aware of the DYK section as having a large proportion of prose that I would not be happy to have pass through, so while I have had a bit of time over the last week or so, I have tried to add an editorial eye there. While I will sometimes have been brief and to the point, I do not believe that I have ever been rude to other contributors, nor have I intervened other than to try to ensure a high standard on the Main Page of Wikipedia. I am aware of one editor currently saying that they want nothing more to do with DYK, but I have, as far as I can recall, played no part in discussion of any of the hooks for the series of books in question. I'd invite you to provide examples of my contributions that you consider "to intentionally belittle the work and efforts of others", or to withdraw the accusation. I am no fan of DYK at all and would happily abolish it as I think it showcases Wikipedia's most unstable articles and encourages people to create multiple small bad articles on a topic rather than one long comprehensive one, but I'll concur with Blofeld here. You seem to have spent a significant chunk of the last few days making snotty comments at DYK. Since the main purpose of DYK is to encourage new editors (there are some regulars, but they're not the main focus), it's often the first internal Wikipedia process new or newish editors see; bitchy comment after bitchy comment after bitchy comment after bitchy comment after bitchy comment is not only demoralizing for the editors involved, but potentially gives them the impression that your "shout until I get my way" style of discussion is the appropriate way to behave on Wikipedia. – iridescent 18:04, 6 June 2011 (UTC)

Let's investigate those:

If I find several hooks on which I believe I can make a contribution toward improving what might eventually appear on the main page, I will comment on many hooks. That is the essence of a contributive project. Would you rather that I find hooks, think "There is something I could do to improve this hook, but I'll ignore it and let something ungrammatical appear on the Main Page", and leave them as they are?

I suspect that the vast majority of readers have no idea who Pepe Sanchez is. That being the case, publishing a comparison to this person is not helpful. I don't think that is controversial.

I feel no obligation to make politeness a priority in replying to someone who characterises my efforts to make DYK more reliable as being a jobsworth.

A term was used in an ambiguous way. I pointed this out, and illustrated the alternative meaning for those unfamiliar with the nomenclature of the Anglican Church (presumably how the ambiguous term crept in). I suggested a tweak to the link that would make clearer the appropriate application of the word in question, and a couple of other tweaks to make the salient facts clearer to readers. No disrespect to the originator, but does anyone really think that the hook was not clearer after the suggestions I made were incorporated?

A statistic had been made central to the hook, but with no information to give a sense of perspective to it. I was not alone in suggesting that that was unhelpful, but there was consistent reluctance to provide it, as though it were unthinkable that any educated person should be unfamiliar with the dimensions of a baseball pitch. That means that anyone wanting to understand the relevance of the hook was diverted away from the intended target article.

Both the article, and the hook, looked very much like they were promotional, and the same editor was reverted on another article (one which you have much expanded) for exactly the same thing. More than 50% of the article (which I note has now been PRODed and redirected) consisted of reproduction of the establishments promotional material. Was it wrong to point this out? Thankyou Iridescent for looking into that. I wouldn't make a point of it unless I really notice something, and its is exactly the snotty comment after snotty comment which prompted me to bring it up. Yes, DYK standards should be improved and constructive criticism is good but it can reach a point when it actually puts people off from nominating articles or contributing which is ultimately disastrous.♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:12, 6 June 2011 (UTC)

I only ask that you have the objectivity to consider each comment on its own merit. Each hook is a separate prospective item on the Main Page: each one should be as well phrased as possible. I see an obvious sign of wikistress in this thread :-) @Iridescent: calling constructive criticism "bitchy comments" is not constructive - I believe there should be a balance between "I'm doing good" and "I need to get better". We shouldn't shut down WP and DYK because they contain errors (they do, all around the place), we should work together to fix them. While some Kevin's comments of the last weeks were nitpicking on hook formulation, many revealed factual problems in the articles - cudos, this is more than appreciated. @Kevin: I was rather terse when started reviewing DYKs, and this turned off not only some newcomers but even some regulars. It is important to remember that we are all stressed and choose a softer tone in phrasing; suggest an alternative wherever possible. @Dr. B: The question of "boring hooks" is painful because boring is relative and vague, but we should try to make the hooks more interesting. This does not mean "sex and drugs and rock-n-roll", this means you can phrase the same hook better. Writing an interesting hook is a kind of test, that the writer understands the essentials of the article xe wrote. An example from yesterday: "... that ... some rare bird, which is spotted in Tanzania (and elsewhere) is listed as vulnerable" is a solid, yet boring fact; it was so easy to say, for example, ... that Tanzania hosts 1100+ bird species, including that gorgeous bird on the picture. Sorry, but I agree with Iridescent, his comments have come across as downright bitchy in the last week or two and it is most certainly constructive in telling this editor to dial down the tone of his comments. As I say, if Kevin simply went about like you do Material, fixing minor errors, grammar and style etc without making a big song and dance about it then this would be ideal. Of course Kevin is useful for identifying errors but I believe he is approaching it the wrong way and in the process deterring a lot of contributors.♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:50, 7 June 2011 (UTC)

One last point: both here and on my talk you refer to Material Scientist as a example of "just silently go about fixing errors and minor edits"/"fixing minor errors, grammar and style etc without making a big song and dance about it". Is this a suggestion that an editor should directly change the proposal that someone else has made. I mean no disrespect to those who do this, but I have real ethical issues about changing editor A's words and leaving his/her signature to them. I did it once in my spell of active editing at TDYK, and placed a note hoping that that would not be considered offensive. I would not expect anyone else to leave my signature to anything but my words, but I get the impression that this is what you are proposing would have been a better course of action. Are you? Thank you for your comments. However, once again, I would ask what is wrong in being exacting/nitpicking on hooks, i.e. on phrases that are to appear on the Main Page. Surely if there is one page in Wiki that should look as professional as possible it is the Main Page. Is there a level of errors in fact, grammar, referencing, semantics and style that we are to promulgate, or are we to work together to make the portal as good as we collectively can? Nothing is wrong with that. It is just my personal priority is the article - its hook stays for 6 hr and gone. My priority goes like that: (i) the hook is factually incorrect and this is the backbone of the article; the article needs rewriting to fix that, thus the hook is pulled off the main page. (ii) The fact of the hook and the article are partly incorrect, but this can be quickfixed. (iii) the hook is grammatically incorrect, and (iv) its phrasing is a matter of personal preference; (v) the fact seems boring/not notable. Everyone would appreciate finding and fixing (i-ii), but some would fight on (v), and the harder you go with (iv) or (v) the harder could be the opposition, which is why I find that sometimes even phrasing a comment is important. Kevin, the main problem is your tone tends to be superior or sarcastic (if it's not intended like that, fine, but it does come across as such). The other problem is that DYK is specifically set up to be a bit quirky and inject a little more light heartedness into the main page - the whole point is to come up with something intriguing to hook in readers and showcase new content that people have spent time contributing. I think the main point being made is this; DYK is full of newbie editors, so extra effort to be nice (and not bitey) and explain problems in detail is prefferable :) --Errant ^(chat!) 10:08, 7 June 2011 (UTC)

Sorry to bother you again, but I was New Page Patrolling and came across Baie de Prony River. I can't verify that this "river" really exists though, I can only found the "Baie de Prony" (Prony Bay), and some other rivers ending in the bay. Could you provide a source that actually describes this as a river? If not, could you check to make certain that the other articles you created are correctly described as rivers or not? Hi Dr. Blofield, thank you for your help on the Aelita Andre article! Do you know of any source that might list her birthday? I spent a lot of time yesterday looking for one, but I couldn't find it. I think she was probably born in 2007 since her official website still says she's 3, which leads me to believe she recently had her birthday. However, until I can get a source to confirm that, I've undone the two edits that added information saying she was born in 2007. After all, if her birthday is in the second half of the year, it would mean she was born in 2006. inre DYK for Up and at 'Em (film)

I apologize for the confusion, as the claim is made twice in that paragraph... in the first sentence... "The film also marks the very first screen role for actor Eddie Quillan." and in the paragraph's last sentence with a bit more context based upon the body of the paragraph... "Eddie Quillan was signed to contract in 1922, and Up and at 'Em was his very first film". While the entire paragraph is supported by the citation, and while the last sentence's repeat of the claim is immediately followed by the required citation,[3], it was an easy matter to simply place the citation a second time, at the beginning of that paragraph and following the first instance of the claim. MOS:FLAG

One editor pointed to a statement in MOS:FLAG that says to avoid use of flags in infoboxes. Now that all that links stuff has been fixed, well... Anyway, I don't think that makes sense, and basically contradicts current practice. So, I've tweeked it. See that I've got it right, please. There is, and the use of flags is limited for good reason; some of Wikipedia's nastiest long-running disputes relate to the use of flags, particularly when a territory or a person's nationality is disputed. Pay particular attention to this section. A lot of people have found themselves blocked for violating this one, since it's very easy to step into Ireland, Israel-Palestine, Kosovo, or any of the other nationalist disputes subject to sanctions. – iridescent 18:36, 11 June 2011 (UTC)

No, there is no formal consensus against using flags. If there was we must certainly would not have Template:Flag used in 250,000 articles!! LOL Iridescent you think 250,000 articles is "limited". LOL. Unless you can show me a formal suppose vs oppose which indicates a consensus. Could I live without flags in infoxes and deleting Template:Flag? Sure. It really, really doesn't help your case to write off a long stream of legitimate arguments on the MOS talkpage as "I don't like it"; and it's difficult to swallow the idea that you actually believe TfDing the whole thing is a reasonable way forward. Imeko Afon

I am puzzling over the coordinates. The ones given for the LGA are solidly in the middle of the LGA, o.k. I asume. The coordinates given for Imeko seem to be about where the postal service map shows the town to be - but the blurry satellite view does not show much of a town there. If you look at 7.452348°N 2.839408°E / 7.452348; 2.839408, which labelled on the map as in Idofa, you see "Celestial Church". I think this is "Celestial City, Imeko". This is only about 3km from the coordinates given for Imeko, so perhaps is correct. Rural communities in this part of the world are often quite scattered: several small clusters of houses linked by paths to each other. The Imeko coordinates could therefore be correct, and the church location could be correct too. I wish I had a way to verify it. You can zoom in on my typical house in a typical suburb and see not only an accurate street map but also a good view of the house from street level, but the pilgrimage center for the Celestial Church of Christ is just a blur of uncertain location. Man, you create an abundance of new articles. Thank you for filling in the DEFAULTSORT value as hardly anybody does that. However, you are filling in it wrong.

1. Finlay J. MacDonald should be "Macdonald, Finlay J." and not "Mac, Fin". There are a tonne of last names that start with "mac".
2. Abdel-Malik Mansour should be "Mansour, Abdel-Malik" and not "Mansour, Shaea". Where did Shaea come from?
3. Abdu Ali Abdul Rahman should be "Abdul Rahman, Abdu Ali" and not "Abdul, Abdu". Again, alot of last (and first) names start with Abdul. Also, in Arabic, last names with Abdul should always be paired with the name after it as the name after it describes God. Abdul means "servant" and Rahman "merciful", so Abdul Rahman means servant of the Merciful. My last name is slightly arranged Welsh word for "mound". Servant of the Merciful is so much better.

So, please use the full name in the DEFAULTSORT value unless it is not called for... As you have done correctly in dropping "al" or "el" that are in front of last names. Bgwhite (talk) 05:45, 17 June 2011 (UTC)

Translate templates

What are you playing at? These templates were NOT designed to be stuck in hiding on talk pages, They are intended to directly encourage editors to translate content. Some articles are so extremely lacking that any translated content is useful. Your actions here indicate that you have little experience in actual transwiki work and how it works. There is absolutely no point in having these tags in the talk pages where few editors look. Most of the articles they are slopped on desperately need content transferred asap and having a big tag presents no major problem. If you genuinely want wikipedia to grow you would see some sense that curbing this transwiki effort as you are attempting to do by hiding its basic function is shameful. Also the google translate link in the template has a function in that you can translate info on another wikipedia and gather more info which is very useful to the casual reader who is looking for more information. We should be maximising our chances of people translating content and reducing the massive gap between us and other wikis on non-anglo subjects not removing the basic mechnaism we already have in place. Thanks for getting in touch. I started a discussion about the usefulness of the template, and there was little response. Perhaps it would be helpful to get a wider community input into the template, what it should contain, and where it should be placed. I am strongly in favour of supporting and encouraging editors to build articles from reliable sources, and am a strong advocate of the {{find}} template - though I would not advise anyone to place that on the article page. Also, I am not in favour of encouraging the general reader to attempt to translate from one language into another. Using Google translate produces results that can be potentially misleading and so worse than having no translation. Most of the other language wikis explicitly forbid use of Google translate. I left the Google translate function on the template, however, to provide a guideline to what the other article has to offer. The template also has the useful function of placing articles into a category which translation experts can crawl through when looking to do a bit of translation work - and this works if the template is placed on the article or the talkpage. I would like to encourage serious, careful and skilled translators to use other language wikis as potential material. I would like to have links to potential sources/material in the same place - so {{find}} and {{Expand language}} being together on the talkpage is a good thing not a bad thing. I saw your adjustment to the main templates in terms of finding reliable sources to back up translated material (which I agree with). But moving all to talk page is a killer. Might I suggest that it is written into the documentation instead to only apply tags to articles which desperately need translated material? E.g for longer articles which may still be improved move the tags to the talk pages but for sub stubs keep them in the main article. I can understand how for longer articles the expand tags might seme bloating in the main article but for sub stubs of which many of these templates are located in I think it is urgent that they contain some content and are expanded asap. Can I point out though that both I and Calliopjen who designed these templates both hate templates in articles. But for this purpose we believe it to be the most effective measure. I'm probably one of the most experienced editors with transwiki on here and I have to say that French and Spanish google translation is exceptionally good and far more beneficial than problematic. Might I also point out that several thousand articles I've transwikied in my time on here I've found to be 95% accurate and have been able to find reliable sources to back up the statements. Whilst I agree that we should encourage editors to use reliable sources I think you are grossly underestimating the value of the initial content from other wikipedias. For instance Swiss and Austrian municipalities sub stubs, the German wiki equivalents are generally very sound and well sourced and exactly the sort of content which should be put into English. There are thousands of examples where our articles would greatly benefit from translated material as a mere start, before even seeking out reliable sources to bring to GA quality. It is that stark in places and terribly uneven in the non anglo world on here that we desperately need this translation function.♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:02, 20 June 2011 (UTC)

MS has objections to use of wikitravel guides, even books. In that case, Fort Teremba will not go through and even this Fort Young Hotel can not be posted. How are you feeling today? In the articles which we have expanded we have used only standard books mostly of Lonely Plant or Brad. I posed this question when we had a problem with one of our articles on some island to decide which books are acceptable and which are not reliable. For many countries, we can not find any source other than these standard and accepted and widely published guides. By the way wildlife in Zanzibar has been fully edited and is ready for posting. More geography stubs up for deletion

I've uncovered another group of highly problemati geography stubs, this time Kenya related ones. Created last year by an (unauthorized, probably) bot, sourced to fallingrain. I've looked long and hard at one of the six subcategories, and have now started Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Airagwani. I thought about but in the end rejected the nuclear option, since the problems are more straightforward with this group than with the ones you created, but it was a close call. It is rather infuriating that the original editor spent next-to-zero effort on these hundreds of articles, but that now hours have to spent to clean the mess... I guess you have more sources than I, so please expand at your pleasure; the rather-struggling Cheshire project needs all the help it can get. Incidentally, I notice that you use the Historic building infobox. Thanks for your message and offer. If you look at Category:Houses in Cheshire, you will find what we have up to now, a total of 161 houses. Not all may fit your criteria, but some not ending in Manor or Hall should be in a list; like Lyme Park and Tirley Garth. Looks like it would be rather a big list for the country, and big even for Cheshire. I don't know much about architecture, but writing these articles helps you to learn more. Regarding your offer, I'm nearly illiterate when it comes to computing stuff, and don't even know what a monobook is, never mind programming anything. But your Googlebook suggestion is a good one, so I'll have a play at it when I get the time. For the moment, as I've only got to "M" in the Cheshire country houses, (and I have some other projects on the go), I may stick to what I have been doing, and leave expansion to later or to others. Nomination of Ziegelburg for deletion
