Edit request[edit]

Hi there! Could this template be changed so it doesn't add user pages and drafts to article categories? For example:

Note that my use of the templates on this page have also miscategorized this page for demonstration purposes. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 20:22, 11 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Let me investigate and see what I can do BoonDock (talk) 20:41, 11 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If you decide that applying categories via this template is compatible with WP:TEMPLATECAT (it is probably not, if you are applying content categories), see Wikipedia:Comparable Lua_functions to wikitext#Namespaces for how to return the namespace number and Wikipedia:Namespace for a list of namespace numbers. I am seeing this template adding content categories at Magnus Malan, as an example. This template should not do that, per the guideline linked above, unless there is consensus for an exception to that guideline. – Jonesey95 (talk) 01:11, 14 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Also, what is the point of the hidden tracking categories like Category:MilAward Ribbon, which appear to duplicate what is available in the "What links here" link? – Jonesey95 (talk) 01:18, 14 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi,
Thank you for that reference. I'll study up on it asap.
I'm moving a large number of uses of an older template to use the new Lua based one, and while I'm working through all the pages, using the categories to track which are where. I intend to remove those categories afterwards. BoonDock (talk) 01:21, 14 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for explaining the hidden tracking categories. The WP:TEMPLATECAT problem still appears to be present. You can see the problem if you edit the section at Magnus Malan#Awards and decorations. – Jonesey95 (talk) 18:10, 16 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see the problem with Malan? Could you be a little more specific please? It seems we're talking past each other and I'm trying to understand exactly what the problem is. BoonDock (talk) 18:14, 16 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The template, when it is used in that article, applies Category:Recipient of the Order of the Star of South Africa and other content categories to the article. Templates should not apply content categories to article pages. From the guideline: it is recommended that articles not be placed in ordinary content categories using templatesJonesey95 (talk) 02:29, 17 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, and yet that's a recommendation in the policy, so I didn't take it that seriously. Just how seriously should I take it? BoonDock (talk) 12:23, 17 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I have fixed the module so that it doesn't add categories which are red-linked or redirects as I indicated on the Village Pump thread. I am also checking that the namespace as delivered by the function you pointed me to is empty which implies it's mainspace. BoonDock (talk) 18:16, 16 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
