Week 2 Guideline Questions[edit]

Is each fact referenced with an appropriate, reliable reference? No, not every fact is referenced with an appropriate reliable source. There is no reference included for the section that talks about his first career hat trick being scored against Miikka Kiprisoff. There is also no reference for the section that talks about Vernon being undrafted and where he played his junior hockey. Aside from these two instances, all information is referenced appropriately with reliable sources.

Is the article neutral? Are there any claims, or frames, that appear heavily biased toward a particular position? This is a neutral article. The information stated about Vernon is simply facts about where he played and his career statistics. There is nothing in this article that suggests bias toward a particular position (eg. there is no mention of whether Vernon is a good hockey player or not).

Is everything in the article relevant to the article topic? Is there anything that distracted you? Yes, all the information provided about Vernon in the article is relevant to the topic. The article is about his hockey career, including both past and present teams that Vernon has been part of. There is nothing distracting in this article that I would say doesn't belong or doesn't pertain to the topic of the article. Lauzo119 (talk) 15:01, 11 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia Assignment Week 2 - Thinking critically about Wikipedia articles including evaluating a Wikipedia article, and leaving suggestions for improving it on the article's Talk page.[edit]

- Is the article neutral? Are there any claims, or frames, that appear heavily biased toward a particular position? The article is very neutral. The information about Vernon is about his hockey career both on and off the ice, but it is simply facts and statistics about where he played, his goals, and his accomplishments off the ice such as his involvement with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. In Vernon’s article there is nothing to suggested a bias, meaning it does not attempt to persuade readers that Vernon is a good hockey player. An example of a bias would be something such as “Vernon is a great player and is a hard-working individual on and off the ice,” but again there is nothing like this in the article.

- Where does the information come from? Are these neutral sources? If biased, is that bias noted? Most of the information comes from major companies such as Sports Illustrated and Dallas News, but I do not believe that all of them are neutral sources. An example of this is in the article “Vernon Fiddler traded to Predators by Devils,” and the article is from NHL.com. The article is trying to promote why Vernon is a good hockey player and why he will be a good fit for the Nashville Predators. It does not mention much about his statistics, and the article seems like it is trying to persuade me that this trade was good and Vernon is a good player for Nashville, therefore being a biased source. I also believe that one of the articles listed in the references section is both bias and not applicable to the article. The article “ from Chloe which goes on to talk about how Chloe “is undoubtedly Fiddler's biggest fan.” This source seems irrelevant and not applicable as it does not mention anything about Vernon, only about this girl named Chloe who has been saving up to see a game of his. It also seems quite bias because the article says why Chloe likes Vernon so much and why he’s a good role model for the community, as if it is trying to persuade me to think that he is a great person and I should but tickets to go see him play as well. Also, no where in the Wikipedia article about Vernon is there any information stating that these articles are bias.

- Is each fact referenced with an appropriate, reliable reference? Not all the facts and statistics in Vernon’s article is referenced with a source when it should be. Most of the information missing references is about his playing career and the statistics about it. For example, there is no reference when the Wiki page states “On May 6, 2002, Fiddler was signed by the Nashville Predators and was assigned to affiliate, the Milwaukee Admirals,” or “On February 29, 2016, Fiddler played in his 800th regular season NHL game. Fiddler assisted on Dallas’ first goal and later scored the tying goal with 1:31 left in the third period to send the game into overtime.” These are specific facts about him as a hockey player, with specific dates and statistics, yet they are not referenced when they should be. There are several other occurrences when this happens throughout the article and those facts should also be referenced, or else there is no way to know if this information is correct and accurate. Also, as stated before, the article “Vernon Fiddler of Devils reunites with biggest fan” from NHL.com does not seem like a reliable source because it shows a bias trying to persuade me to think that he is a good person. Another concern with this source is that the information it is referenced to does not seem to relate. The information in the Wiki page of Vernon is talking about a partnership with the Make-A-Wish Foundation of North Texas, but when looking at the resource used for this information there is no relationship, as it does not stay anything about this in the “Vernon Fiddler of Devils reunites with biggest fan” article. Added more information and added a new section[edit]

Hey! I have added a new section to this article called "retirement", I have also added more specific information to the native heritage section of this article. The last change I made was to that playing career section. For this section I had more specific information to his retirement, compared to what was there before.
