Sport Jacket?[edit]

I have never heard it referred to thus. SportS Jacket is standard and widespread, but not Sport [singular].

Clarification on the terminology as I understand it[edit]

The coat or jacket difference depends on the item itself and the climate where you are. Coats are heavier than jackets. Which term you select is regional because of the typical conditions of the sport.

The sport being upland game bird hunting. If this is traditionally done where you live when it's a cooler out you would do so in a sport coat, which is generally going to be heavier and longer. If this is done when it's still a bit warmer you would use a sport jacket.

In no event do you wear a sports or sporting jacket or coat.

The "sport" being the traditional singular "sport" as in hunting not "sports" as in things people play like tennis or golf.

If you were going to undertake a hunt which you could expect to required a higher volume of shooting and more activity such as fowling you would wear a shooting jacket. You wouldn't traditionally have a shooting coat because if it's cold enough to require a coat it's too cold to be fowling. That is of course in the days before synthetics and other modern luxuries.

If you were hunting stag you would chose a stalking coat or stalking jacket. A Stalking jacket generally has more pockets than a sport coat, is waterproof and should have a thick collar which can be turned up against the wind.

Other activities such as riding, spectating (equestrian,) sailing, golfing, and so on have their own traditional attire. None of which are a sport coat or sport jacket.

Tailored?[edit]

Are all sport coats tailored? Are they called something else if they are not? I've always bought 'em off the rack but I could swear it said "sport coats". -- Gyrofrog (talk) 21:59, 7 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Rename of article[edit]

I've just renamed the article from "sportcoat" to "sport coat", which is by far the more common spelling: see Google Ngram results here. As a further check, editors can google up articles in Esquire and GQ, which are generally authoritative in matters of men's dress in the English-speaking world, to see that "sport coat" is the usual spelling. It may be that in time the two words will merge, as have other combinations in English over the centuries - but it hasn't happened yet. Textorus (talk) 14:45, 23 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. I’ve only ever heard it called a sports jacket. I’m British and in my fifties so was around when these were more popular! So the article seems to be the wrong way round when it says which version is primarily American English. Liberaljon (talk) 20:26, 4 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose "Sport coat" is the most common, but none are so obscure as to be misunderstood. In fact, if one expands the Ngram in Netoholic's comment, "sports jacket" is the least common version of the name.
