Position and ideology shift[edit]

I think it should be explained how and why members of the centre-right Conservative Party - a party with a conservative political ideology - went on to form what's claimed to be a centre-left and social liberal party. This seems on the face of it very odd and like these members had a complete flip in ideology. That or perhaps this party is not centre-left or social liberal and perhaps is centrist or centre-right, as we don't have any citations given to support any ideology or political position claim as yet. Although, there is one to say they are part of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats which is a centre-left group. Again, this seems very odd, why have members of the Conservative Party decided to create a party seemingly aligned to the exact opposite position on the political spectrum to their old party? The Conservative Party (PC) itself wasn't very centre-right to begin with. The party name was Romanian Humanist Party (PUR) and was centrist before a leadership change in 2005. It was a close ally to the Social Democratic Party (PSD) even governing together 2 times (2000–2004 and in 2014) and beeing part of 2 electoral alliances with them (Social Democratic Pole of Romania & National Union PSD+PUR). Not to mention the numerous local election alliances and the fact that they endorsed the presidential candidate of PSD 3 times (2000, 2004 and 2014). Now the thing is that the romanian left it's quite social conservative and nationalist in it's nature. It has been since the Communist times. What makes a party left in this country are the populist economic policies (more government spending, social programs and government regulations on private enterprises) all which PPU have and even PC had. Also PPU is currently in the Social Democratic Party parliamentary group in the national parliament. If you are still astonished how a party can change so radically it's values it's not the first time a party switched from left to right in this country either: the Greater Romania Party (PRM) (in 2000) and the Democratic Party (PD) (in 2005) also went from left to right and they did it as a whole party, while in this case, as i have mentioned, the changes in ideology are not so radical and just a portion of the orginal Conservative Party formed the Humanist Power Party (PPU). So here are the reasons, outside the fact that they call themselves center-left, that i think this party is correctly classified as center-left (although it still needs a citation when someone will care to write about this party). - Barumbarumba (talk) 09:15, 12 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
