Semi-protected edit request on 27 September 2023[edit]

I want to edit "This feedback was fed into the priorities for the console development team. In the development of the PlayStation 5, a key issue was the length of loading times for games."

My request is to change it to "This feedback directly influenced the priorities of the console development team. During the development of the PlayStation 5, a central challenge revolved around addressing the length of loading times for games. DShetty03 (talk) 17:04, 27 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Graphics is RDNA 2 or RDNA 1[edit]

My opinion is that before the PS5 console was released, Sony announced it as RDNA 2-based, but the specifications were changed and the actual console has Custom RDNA 1.

Prior to the launch of the PS5 console, Sony announced that it was RDNA 2-based. >AMD Radeon™ RDNA 2-based graphics engine

>Ray Tracing Acceleration

>Variable frequency, up to 2.23 GHz (10.3 TFLOPS)

https://blog.playstation.com/2020/03/18/unveiling-new-details-of-playstation-5-hardware-technical-specs/

However, the Specifications in the console manual it as RDNA-based.

>GPU: 10 TFLOPS, AMD Radeon™ RDNA-based graphics engine

@Ferret said "RDNA 2" belongs to the "RDNA" family, so the "2" was omitted. Plus reliable sources of disassembly information. https://hothardware.com/news/sony-playstation-5-independent-teardown-ifixit

In my opinion, the CPU is listed as AMD Ryzen "Zen2" and will not be unintentionally omitted. As for the disassembly source, iFixit seems to have believed Sony's announcement. At least it is not stamped on the CHIP.

You're putting a lot of weight on a basic specification table that simply omits a version number, versus numerous reliable sources and public announcements by Sony. There is zero reason to believe this console actually contains a RDNA 1 and Sony stated the wrong thing repeatedly over the years. You may not be aware, but the only RDNA integrated Zen2 APUs use RDNA 2. There are no RDNA 1 Zen2 APUs. And, AMD themselves claim it's RDNA 2.-- ferret (talk) 12:42, 2 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that Sony and AMD have announced in the past that they will adopt RDNA 2. I have looked for announced by the company in the 2023 and I'm not found any. The most recent source I could find is the basic specification. つきみんく (talk) 09:20, 3 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
.... The tweet I linked is from 2021, after the console was released in 2020. This was not a "plan to adopt". -- ferret (talk) 13:20, 3 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
There actually is 1 Zen 2 APU that doesn't support the full RDNA 2 feature set: the one in the PlayStation 5, its a custom chip. Yeah, it isn't a clean RDNA 1 platform either as it supports *most* of RDNA 2's capabilities, but if you'd want to run something that used the full capabilities of RDNA 2 on it, it wouldn't work.--YannickFran (talk) 07:40, 11 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Correct, it's a custom solution from early in RDNA2's release, but even there the developer says "Based on RDNA2 with more features added". To call it based on RDNA1 when all reliable sourcing says RDNA2 would be a WP:V failure. -- ferret (talk) 13:58, 11 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Operating system?[edit]

I came here looking for information about the operating system that the PS5 runs (and didn't find it). I'm guessing it's proprietary, but is it based on an operating system I've heard of? Linux? Sony didn't write their own kernel, did they? Reddit says it's based on FreeBSD! - excarnateSojourner (talk | contrib) 06:18, 24 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Can you make the image in the infobox smaller, it's way too big. Thanks. Natsuinyerere (talk) 14:44, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
