Protests[edit]

The protests against Mayor Hal Marx are considered (by its citizens and board of alderman) to be historically significant. While the page details more of the history of the city overall, this event needs to be included somewhere. I have considered filling in more detail about the 2013 and 2017 tornados and adding their own subsections under History. However, a better section or independent article could be proposed to house historical events for the city. leemcd56 03:21, 30 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Edit Request[edit]

There seems to be an error in this section. Requesting change from "killing of George Floyd" to "murder of George Floyd" to accurately represent what happened. Thank you. 74.76.172.231 (talk) 14:23, 30 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

image removal by conflicted editor[edit]

I have re-added the tornado damage image but lower down the article, as it accurately illustrates part of the article and Wikipedia is NOT censored. Google will eventually use the new image from the info box when the robots get round to it. Theroadislong (talk) 22:39, 8 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with it's placement, but it should be moved up a bit I think, as currently it seems to apply to the 'mayors statements' section, not so much 'tornado' section. I don't know how to do this though. Isro! (talk) 23:01, 8 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I deleted all of the content about the now ex-mayor as being too much detail about a news item that is not relevant to the history of Petal. David notMD (talk) 10:07, 9 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
My question is, is this even something that needs to be in the article? Lots of places get hit by tornadoes. Is this particular tornado strike significant enough to this city that it must be in the article? Not taking a side either way, but I think a discussion as to whether this is WP:UNDUE is needed.--User:Khajidha (talk) (contributions) 18:23, 10 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I'd say yes, it just needs to be expanded with more information (ie casualties, after effects, etc.) If you look at Hattiesburg, Mississippi you'll see it's also listed there, just with more information. There's also an entirely separate article on the tornado storm itself, Tornado outbreak of January 21-23 2017 with much more information, if someone's willing to see what should be transferred over. Getting hit by a tornado seems like quite a major event. 18:41, 10 March 2022 (UTC)
My state (North Carolina) has about 29 tornadoes a year. There was an EF-3 tornado in Brunswick County, North Carolina in February of last year. I can't even find the word "tornado" on the Brunswick County page. --User:Khajidha (talk) (contributions) 19:01, 10 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but getting hit by a tornado when that rarely happens (ie Petal's case) is notable imo Isro! (talk) 16:44, 11 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Why wouldn't you put that under "History?" It a huge part of our history, as is the tornado. They are both defining events in the history of our town. 2601:3C3:380:42F0:C0E0:C42E:1D72:C1EA (talk) 04:37, 21 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
