Proposed merge[edit]

I propose that this article be merged with List of U.S. state partition proposals, which is has a longer history and gives a more thorough look at the history of state partition proposals in the U.S. than this article, which was created only last year (and has been left relatively untouched since), does. Also, everything in this article is also covered in the other article. Drdpw (talk) 18:12, 22 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I have taken the liberty of adding a wikilink to Drdpw's posting, which I hope is not objectionable. J. D. Crutchfield | Talk 18:35, 22 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose: See further comments below. J. D. Crutchfield | Talk 19:39, 22 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support While I understand Jdcrutch's reasoning, I see these articles as fundamentally related and could easily be accommodated in a single article. At the least, these articles have significant overlap, and the redundancy is inappropriate and the scope of the articles should be better clarified. Reywas92Talk 07:56, 18 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge I also see the two articles are intrinsically related, and also think they could happily share the same article. 62.64.152.154 (talk) 15:33, 19 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Further comments[edit]

  • Comments in opposition: I respectfully oppose the proposed merger. I created the present article from a section of Secession in the United States, after discussion on the Talk page, by extracting most of the section and editing it slightly. My purpose was to eliminate some of the ambiguity in the use of the term secession, and specifically to distinguish it from partition and other types of separation, by removing the history of partition from the article on secession, and giving it its own article.
The present article deals chiefly with the history of actual partitions of members of the United States. It does include a list of proposed further partitions; but that section begins with a link to "List of U.S. state partition proposals", and is in the nature of a summary of that article, of a sort that is quite common on Wikipedia. It could probably be reduced, but it certainly does not duplicate the latter article. The new page was reviewed and approved.
On the other hand, "List of U.S. state partition proposals" deals chiefly with proposed partitions that have not been carried out. Its lede does to some extent duplicate the historical information in the present article, and the list itself covers some, but not all, of the historical partitions of States; but the great majority of the article (which is really more of an ordered exposition than a list) is concerned with unsuccessful partition proposals.
If others find that there is excessive overlap between the two articles, I would not oppose revisions to reduce that; but overall I find that the articles cover substantially different topics, contain mostly different material, and serve different purposes, so that they should not be merged.
