Babylon 5[edit]

Hi:

There was a scene in Babylon 5 written for her by JMS when she beggs her technologically superior people to intercede in a war amongst the humans; JMS wrote that scene with her sensibilities in mind, given the recent Balkan wars. A cite should be located before this is included. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.92.35.80 (talkcontribs)

I actually remember a scene very much like that in the fourth season, during the civil war arcs. I'm not sure what you mean by "her sensibilities" but, in general the scene was both consistent with the character, and the rest of the setting. Saying the character was written with her in mind because of a single scene would be misleading. (though we could find out if she was in fact JMS' first choice for Delenn.) War in Croatia wasn't ciwil war. It's Serbian agression on Croatia. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.3.51.205 (talk) 07:35, 14 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No no. It was the very definition of a civil war. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 178.148.4.32 (talk) 13:49, 1 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

American? Jewish?[edit]

Unless she holds US citizenship, she shouldn't be categorised as a Jewish American. —Preceding unsigned comment added by MartinUK (talkcontribs)

Note added: She holds American citizenship - she shouldn't be categorised as Jewish, because she isn't (her maternal grandfather Fritz Weill was). I find it annoying that people keep insisting on putting her SUPPOSED year of birth in here, with NO PROOF or factual basis that it is correct. I know where the 1955 date came from, it was a GUESS made by a fan based on a chapter of a book that used part of her "Letter to My Co-Citizens" without permission. It has subsequently been dragged all over the internet, as if it were factual, even ending up in the IMDb, who regrettably will not change or remove it unless they get a new date (apparently, they don't care if their information is inacurate). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.234.36.101 (talkcontribs)

As far as I can tell, Furlan's mother is "fully Jewish" (an article mentioned that Furlan's mother survived WWII because Furlan's adoptive or step grandmother was not Jewish). Anyway, Furland is referred to as Jewish at [1], [2] [3] Mad Jack 07:17, 9 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Amazing isn't it how information gets dragged all over the internet and repeated, and if it is repeated often enough it becomes taken as fact. Ms. Furlan's mother was most categorically NOT fully Jewish. Ms. Furlan's mother's father was a German Jew, named Fritz Weill, however neither Branka's Weill's birth mother, nor her adoptive mother were Jewish. While the Nazi's & the Croatian Ustaše would have labeled Branka as Jewish, by Jewish law she was not. All of these articles were written in ignorance, based on the media campaign against her in the Croatian media in the early 1990's, where the Jewish label was thrown at Ms. Furlan as a perjorative, nobody actually bothered to do any fact checking. Just like the date of her birth, one fan made a guess at what he thought the year was, and every one else has just parroted that ASSumption. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 205.207.167.42 (talkcontribs)

Please read WP:V and WP:NOR. Wikipedia works on verifiability, not truth. There are numerous reliable source that explicitly say Furlan is Jewish, including the Hillel interview. Likewise, there are no sources that say her grandmother (rather than her adoptive grandmother) was not Jewish, but that's a different topic altogether. All that can be placed in the article is what the sources have said. Mad Jack 20:34, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Which is why a lot of people think Wikipedia is useless and full of errors and misinformation. There is a much more accurate source than any of the ones that you have quoted - Mira herself. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 205.207.167.42 (talkcontribs)

All of the sources I've quoted are interviews with Furlan herself, actually. But the bottom line is that Wikipedia can only publish information that has previously been published in reliable sources - nothing more. Any errors present here should have been made by reliable sources first (and if they have, then blame the sources :-)) Mad Jack 20:42, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

And NOWHERE in any of those sources does is say that her maternal grandmother was Jewish. All of the sources say that her maternal grandfather and ONLY her maternal grandfather was. My source is Mira herself. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 205.207.167.42 (talkcontribs)

The Wikipedia article doesn't say her grandmother was Jewish. It just says Furlan is Jewish on her mother's side. The sources cited explicitly say "Furlan is a Croatian Jew". "Mira herself" would violate WP:NOR and WP:RS for what is an acceptable source. Something needs to be published in a reliable publication to be considered reliable. Mad Jack 20:49, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I changed it to "Furlan is Jewish", which is exactly what the sources said, from "Furlan is Jewish on her mother's side". That's probably the best way to handle it. Mad Jack 20:52, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

She is not Jewish according to the orthodox definition. She may be acceptable to the Reform movement! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.150.87.221 (talk) 17:25, 29 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Venetian? Friulian?[edit]

The article given as reference to the claim that her surname is of Venetian heritage makes no such suggestion. However, the word "Furlan" is the Friulian adjective for...Friulian, as was indicated on the Wikipedia page Furlan.

Disputed tag[edit]

The major remaining disputed point is Furlan's birthday. I have been told by a friend of Furlan's that she has never publicly stated her birthday, and the date listed in imdb was actually a fan-based guess. However imdb will not correct the date without replacing it with another date. So the false date stays. I have also been told that the article in general is full of errors. This person tried to address the problems (see above comments), but because she does not have hard "evidence", her information was not taken seriously. I would love to get to the bottom of all this and have a factual article, but Furlan herself is pretty private, and there isn't a whole lot of credible information about her publicly available. --Fang Aili talk 20:34, 3 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Just in case: In 2002, Mira Furlan gave an interview to the Croatian daily Novi List (Original, subscription only, English Translation at exyupress.com) saying she was 35 when she left Croatia. So if the date is incorrect at all, it's a year off at most. And I don't know of any celebrity who has tried to make herself one year younger, especially not if the resulting age would still be over the dreaded 40 or 50 ;-) --20percent (talk) 17:05, 6 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Apology?[edit]

Was this movie ever released? Seems like the article hasn't been updated about it since Nov. 2007, and now all the links referenced are dead, including the IMDb one. 88.114.35.223 (talk) 10:50, 7 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

1988 film role[edit]

Removed the following from the article. If true (which I doubt), it needs a more reliable citation than a dead link in Serbian. - Sethant (talk) 01:45, 7 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

In 1988 she became famous for filming the first group sex scene in Yugoslav cinema history.[1]

  • Twitter is not a reliable source. Please do not add a death date without an RS. A google search says the reports of her death are a hoax.Websurfer2 (talk) 04:29, 22 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
