Error in writing about the books[edit]

Easy Riders, Raging Bulls hardly deals with this movie "almost exclusively". It's about the state of Hollywood from the late '60s till the early 80's. While Heaven's Gate does play a part in the book, it is far from the only film written about.

Pronunciation of last name[edit]

... seems a bit far-fetched imho. Anyone know for sure? Wathiik (talk) 17:04, 8 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

[ˈtʃamɪnəʊ]? That doesn't look right - "CHAA-min-oh". Possibly it's meant to be /tʃəˈmɪnoʊ/? That's just a guess though. Lfh (talk) 14:02, 5 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The name is Italian. Unlike other languages, Italian is very clear not to say strict about pronunciation. Have a look at a dictionary. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:8070:21A2:A700:9284:DFF:FEF5:C9F8 (talk) 19:48, 2 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Date of Birth[edit]

The article reads: "He was born in New York City, New York on either November 16, 1943 (according to his professional biography) or February 3, 1943 (which is more plausible in light of the dates of his degrees.."

It originally said "February 3, 1939". Who keeps changing it to 1943? If whoever changed it read the rest of the paragraph, they would see that Cimino got his Bachelors in '61, and his Masters in '63. Do they really think Cimino got his college degree at 18 (which would also mean he graduated high school at 14, and grade school at 10)?

This article has been wrecked[edit]

Although not perfect, the good information that was in this article has really been tampered with. It looks like the user "Al Fecund" deleted the excellent information from the unmade projects section and replaced it with a cut and paste from the IMDB trivia section. The previous information was sourced from Final Cut and various articles written about Cimino. The cut and paste job from IMDB trivia is not sourced and contains approximations and errors. For example, the adaptation of The Yellow Jersey is the screenplay about the Tour De France: they aren't two separate projects. The older version of the section needs to be reverted. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.139.67.149 (talk) 07:30, 26 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Education and dates don't match up[edit]

Article claims Cimino graduated from high school in 1956, then graduated from Michigan State "in only three years" making his earliest graduation date in Fall 1959, then goes on to Yale as an undergraduate(?!) and graduates in only two years in 1961. Needless to say, all of that together sounds highly unlikely. I haven't read Bach's book in seven years but I don't remember anything about Cimino going to MSU. All other sources have Cimino graduating from Yale with a B.F.A in 1961 and an M.F.A. in 1963 and that's it. Are there any corroborating sources that Cimino graduated from MSU in addition to Yale? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2602:306:C41D:6AE0:E920:CCF5:99D4:DC5B (talk) 23:52, 19 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Appearance[edit]

Nothing about his transformation.98.110.87.71 (talk) 00:57, 22 December 2015 (UTC)Reinhard Heydritz[reply]

Yes, I think we should mention how his physical appearance was radically altered over the years. It fueled not only his reputation as an eccentric, but also the rumor that he was undergoing a sex change, which should be also mentioned since he took the pain to deny in one of his few interviews (here). Unexplained deletions and changes[edit]

On Sunday January 10, 2016, user @Sanziophan: made the following unexplained changes to the article: here. I reverted the changes in Good Faith (WP:GF) because, even when there was some newly sourced information, there were also plenty of deletions that were also sourced, and, again, the user offered no explanation. The user left a message in my TP, not explaining its changes, but merely saying that they were not a mistake. I re-checked the sources he deleted and found them legitimate (WP:EDIT). I reverted it back to where it was originally and ask user Sanziophan (talk · contribs) to offer an explanation for the deletions before making any other change (and do justice to other editors and the article), but I also leave the issue now to others more familiar with the subject. Thanks. Caballero//Historiador 00:28, 11 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Unrealized projects[edit]

Light show, I already got rid of 5kb worth of original research or poorly sourced coatrack crap in the "unfinished projects" section. I am willing to remove most of it, but looking at the article's history, there is a few dedicated editors who controls the article, reverting any attempt to remove questionable content or add controversy. They haven't appeared in the article yet since his death, but I'm afraid removing all the source misrepresentation content (the main issue in the article) that I will get reverted. I could use some help in the talk page if that's the case. Also great work on the Elie Wiesel article, turning the content from terrible, to high quality. Meinnaples (talk) 22:12, 3 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I'll watch the article and will support any improvements. Personally, I'd delete all the subsections in the "unrealized projects" section, since they're all composed of brief factoids. If any of the unrealized projects were significant, the details could be kept. Thanks for the other feedback. --Light show (talk) 22:21, 3 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Look at the section now. Converted all to prose the films that where there are plenty of sources to deem a pre-production "failure" and those which became successful films. Meinnaples (talk) 22:46, 3 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Putting the unrealized projects as prose in one section is already an improvement. However, in totaling the number of words in the "Film Career" section with the "Unrealized projects" (UP) section, the UPs are still 60% of the total. I would shoot for no more than 10% of the combined total. Writing scripts which don't get used could be mentioned as a general matter, without listing them all. I'd try getting more background details about his actual films, and expand at least those sections also since many are just single sentences. --Light show (talk) 23:14, 3 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Just read his obits from the L.A. Times and New York Times. The LAT gave his UPs a paragraph, about 10%, and the NYT didn't mention them at all. --Light show (talk) 00:47, 4 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Spinoff article?[edit]

I see there's a Draft:Michael Cimino's unrealized projects in process. Is that helpful to what you want to do with this article? AngusWOOF (barksniff) 01:15, 31 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Pinging Light show and Prevan (formerly Meinnaples) on this. AngusWOOF (barksniff) 01:16, 31 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I am the creator of the draft mentioned above by AngusWOOF. I created the draft in order to mention Cimino's unrealized projects that used to be mentioned in previous revisions of the article, like this one for example. I believe there are plenty of entries of Cimino's unrealized projects enough to have its own List-class rated article on Wikipedia. Hitcher vs. Candyman (talk) 01:42, 31 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hitcher vs. Candyman, there's a large section in the Cimino article about unrealized projects. Is the plan to move that over to the new article? That's why I suggested discussing it at the talk page. AngusWOOF (barksniff) 16:46, 31 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, AngusWOOF that is correct. I feel like there’s a decent amount of unrealized projects for a stand-alone article. I admit not all the unrealized projects are mentioned in the draft because of the limited availability of newspaper articles as the reliable sources. I’m waiting until the beginning of August so I am able to renew my free subscription with the newspaper sources. Hitcher vs. Candyman (talk) 18:38, 31 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, so I managed to expand the draft. Here are the following entries of Michael Cimino's unrealized projects currently in the draft:

  1. Conquering Horse (Based on Frederick Manfred's novel)
  2. The Fountainhead (Based on Ayn Rand's novel)
  3. Frank Costello biopic (Proud Dreamer or The Life and Dreams of Frank Costello)
  4. Pearl (Janis Joplin musical biopic)
  5. Crime and Punishment (Based on Fyodor Dostoevsky's novel)
  6. The Dogs of War (Based on Frederick Forsyth's novel; Cimino's script is unrelated to John Irvin's film)
  7. Perfect Strangers (Romantic drama for Paramount)
  8. The Godfather III (In case Francis Ford Coppola did not resume directing duties)
  9. Midnight Express (Screenwriter Oliver Stone approached Cimino to direct the film)
  10. The Rose (Cimino is uncredited for his work in the script of this Mark Rydell film)
  11. Nitty Gritty or Live on Tape (Comedy for CBS Theatrical Films about news reporting)
  12. Fyodor Dostoevsky biopic (One of two collaborations with Raymond Carver)
  13. The King of Comedy (At one point, Robert De Niro arranged for Cimino to direct the film after Martin Scorsese initially turned it down)
  14. Reel to Reel (A collaboration with Steven Spielberg and Gary David Goldberg)
  15. The Dead Zone (Based on Stephen King's novel)
  16. Footloose (Replaced by Herbert Ross)
  17. The Bounty (According to his Variety obituary)
  18. The Pope of Greenwich Village (Replaced by Stuart Rosenberg)
  19. Purple Lake (The other of the two collaborations with Raymond Carver)
  20. The Yellow Jersey (Based on Ralph Hurne's novel about the Tour de France)
  21. Platoon (According to Oliver Stone)
  22. Legs (Based on William Kennedy's novel about Legs Diamond)
  23. Atlas Shrugged (Based on another Ayn Rand novel)
  24. Handcarved Coffins (Based on Truman Capote's short story)
  25. Santa Ana Wind (Romantic thriller for Columbia Pictures and Nelson Entertainment)
  26. Born on the Fourth of July (Also according to the Variety obit)
  27. Michael Collins biopic (unrelated to Neil Jordan's movie)
  28. The Dreaming Place (1997 project for Trimark Pictures)
  29. Man's Fate (Based on Andre Maulraux's novel)

Please note that some of these entries (e.g. Atlas Shrugged, Platoon, Reel to Reel, The Dead Zone) were never mentioned in this previous revision. Also please note that three more unrealized projects have yet to be mentioned in the article due to difficulty of finding reliable sources for them:

  • Untitled Porgy & Bess Project
  • Full Circle (A supposed collaboration with John Woo)
  • Paradise Junction (On Google, the closest I could find Cimino's involvement with this project is via this Amazon link)

Despite the omission of these three projects, I believe the draft is sizeable enough to have its own standalone article in Wikipedia. Comments? @AngusWOOF, Light show, and Prevan: Hitcher vs. Candyman (talk) 02:18, 2 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I also would like to suggest adding a to the Unrealized projects section. Hitcher vs. Candyman (talk) 02:27, 2 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
All I need left is a greenlight from you, AngusWOOF, to resubmit my draft for creation. Hitcher vs. Candyman (talk) 02:29, 2 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I'm going to resubmit again. Hitcher vs. Candyman (talk) 01:47, 3 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@AngusWOOF: Update: I managed to add Full Circle and Paradise Junction to the list in the draft. All I need left is to find a source mentioning Cimino's involvement with Porgy & Bess. Hitcher vs. Candyman (talk) 23:20, 14 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@AngusWOOF: Update: I've officially added Porgy & Bess to the draft, making the list complete and ready for review. Please see the comments I made at Draft:Michael Cimino's unrealized projects. Hitcher vs. Candyman (talk) 00:37, 15 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hitcher vs. Candyman, are there news articles that put together such lists or discuss the unrealized projects as a whole? I don't mean specific ones, but ones that focus that say stuff like "Here are 25 unrealized projects that Cimino had worked on." AngusWOOF (barksniff) 02:10, 15 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, AngusWOOF, there are news articles that discuss his unrealized projects. Here's one from the LA Times. There's also his Variety obituary to consider, which also mentions his unrealized projects. I mentioned both of them at Draft:Michael Cimino's unrealized projects. Need me to show more? Hitcher vs. Candyman (talk) 02:36, 15 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
The Uproxx obituary also mentions some of his unrealized projects too, AngusWOOF. Hitcher vs. Candyman (talk) 02:45, 15 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hitcher vs. Candyman, it mentions some but it doesn't dedicate a major portion of the article to the entire list. I don't want us the editors to put together the list as that would be original research. I want someone from reliable sources to have already put together such a list. AngusWOOF (barksniff) 02:12, 16 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
AngusWOOF I’m being as patient and as civil as I can. Please try to explain your argument in layman’s terms. Hitcher vs. Candyman (talk) 06:56, 16 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps I should compare the draft with that of Steven Spielberg's unrealized projects, that way you have a better understanding AngusWOOF. If you read that particular article, you will notice that Spielberg was considered to direct such films as Big (1988), The Truman Show (1998), Inspector Gadget (1999) and Thank You For Your Service (2017), all of which were never mentioned on a list in such reliable sources as Indiewire, Vulture.com, Yahoo!, Mental Floss and Empire and yet they’re still listed in the article because of other reliable sources. Do you understand what I’m trying to tell you? Hitcher vs. Candyman (talk) 07:32, 16 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

And have you read this link? It also mentions a few of Cimino’s unrealized projects. Hitcher vs. Candyman (talk) 07:45, 16 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

And again, AngusWOOF, please see the LA Times article. You said, “I don't want us the editors to put together the list as that would be original research. I want someone from reliable sources to have already put together such a list.“. Here’s that list. Hitcher vs. Candyman (talk) 07:55, 16 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Maineartists, remember when you told me “I'll stand in your corner any day“ at Talk:Michael Richards#Antonio Baz Richards? Well, I could use your assistance please. Hitcher vs. Candyman (talk) 08:01, 16 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
AngusWOOF Update: I've added Cream Rises to the list, thus making it 33 entries in total. Hitcher vs. Candyman (talk) 08:50, 16 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hitcher vs. Candyman Thank you for inviting me to partake in this very interesting creation. Since notification, I have read, researched and reviewed all content, links, policies, similar articles, etc and at this point in your endeavors I see absolutely no reason that your new article should not be created and a link provided from the section within the original article. This aspect of Cimino's career is substantial enough to warrant its own section, and furthermore continue as a significant list; which you have compiled, cited and expanded with ample historical background for each mention within the list (similar to the Spielberg format). I must argue with the opposing side and certain requests for additional criteria for submission: "I don't want us the editors to put together the list as that would be original research. I want someone from reliable sources to have already put together such a list." This is nearly impossible to expect from any WP editor, and borders on plagiarism - considering when it comes to lists, that is exactly how it works on WP. It is not considered OR - it is merely gathering information from various - separate - sources to make a complete directory. No one source ever contains a complete listing of any one's accomplishments, failures, credits, etc - except maybe IMDB and IBDB and even then WP policy expects other independent sources to be used in their stead when possible. The fact that you ask that a reliable source have already put the list together is the same "OR" as an editor here at WP gathering all the necessary individual sources to back each claimed listing. However, OR simply means that no fact, allegation or idea can be included without a reliable published source. Hitcher vs. Candyman has done just that. I am starting to feel that the hoops being presented to him are not WP policy, but more personal; especially when an editor starts to use the terms such as: 'I don't want ..." and "I want ..." My suggestion at present is to strongly allow the article draft to be submitted as is without any further demands on its format, content or sources. I will continue to follow this discussion. Thanks. Maineartists (talk) 13:42, 16 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Maineartists, I'm not asking for a definitive or complete list outside of Wikipedia. I'm just asking for attempts by other external news sources to make such lists for his unfinished works per WP:LISTN "it has been discussed as a group or set by independent reliable sources, per the above guidelines; notable list topics are appropriate for a stand-alone list." For example: List of video game mascots, List of zombie films, List of catchphrases have all had independent reliable sources where such lists have been made. I'll go ahead and run this through in the meantime. AngusWOOF (barksniff) 16:20, 16 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry AngusWOOF but when you wrote: "I want someone from reliable sources to have already put together such a lists", I thought you meant just that. In regards to "list", I think we're talking about apples and oranges when it comes to your categories and this BP's specific list. Still, appreciate the going ahead and running. Best, Maineartists (talk) 18:43, 16 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Maineartists, it's so people don't use Wikipedia to create the original list of works by a certain category. Every creator has a list of unfinished works, but whether that gets its own list really depends on whether those independent reliable sources have discussed it as such, and also whether it's a sizable split from the main article. For example, someone could make a list of directors who wear glasses and source every item to a RS, but unless there are some external reliable sources that consistently discuss it, multiple articles that say "Check out the top directors that wear glasses..." and that isn't BuzzFeed, it isn't notable to have such a list on Wikipedia. AngusWOOF (barksniff) 19:24, 16 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Dead horse. Beat. I have no idea what you're talking about in regards to what I originally commented on. Apples, oranges and now spectacles ... it's done. Let's move on. Thanks. Maineartists (talk) 01:27, 17 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Nikki Cimino[edit]

Since Cimino's new biography reveals that Cimino was trans and calling herself Nikki in the past few decades of her life, should the article be renamed to Nikki Cimino? Prokrabsgod2 (talk) 01:34, 23 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I think this would be a very hard sell considering there are no consistent online sources that refer to the director as "she" or "Nikki", (at least none that I can find), enough to change the entire article. Even a simple Google search of the name "Nikki Cimino" paired with "Director" renders nothing associated with Michael Cimino except for this book. Cimino died in 2016. If he really was known as "Nikki" in the last decades of his life; surely this would be better known by now. In addition, nothing in the article even states this (unless I missed it). Maineartists (talk) 13:51, 23 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I believe this article mentions it. That being said, the article does mention that Cimino was only known as Nikki and went by 'she' and 'her' in private life, still going by Michael in public life. Besides this, I don't think there's anything else to mention it so I can see why it wouldn't necessarily require a name change. Of course, the fact that Cimino is dead means we probably won't get much about this beyond this book. As it stands, nothing to fully confirm this was true, but I felt it should have at least been brought up in case. Prokrabsgod2 (talk) 03:48, 24 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Catch-22. The article that you referenced doesn't mention it. It mentions the book that mentions it. Which is very different. You would need several separate sources to corroborate. That being said, there is nothing stopping you from including this new book and its claims. Thus bringing up this newly publicized fact. In doing so, it opens up the subject for other editors to add more content once / if it becomes available. Maineartists (talk) 11:46, 24 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Unrealized projects - Platoon (1980s) full of incorrect info[edit]

It currently says: "Platoon starring Emilio Estevez as Staff Sergeant Bob Barnes"

But Platoon stars Charlie Sheen (Estevez's brother) And not as Barnes (that's Tom Berenger's role) but as Taylor

I think the intent was to say that the version Cimino was going to produce would have starred Estevez, same for Andy Kaufman with The King of Comedy. I edited it for clarification. YouCanDoBetter (talk) 19:12, 3 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
