WP:NOTDIRECTORY[edit]

There has been a question as to whether this article might run afoul that guidance. A quick look shows that it does not.

WP:NOTDIRECTORY Below is the guidance from NOTDIR:

"Wikipedia encompasses many lists of links to articles within Wikipedia that are used for internal organization or to describe a notable subject. In that sense, Wikipedia functions as an index or directory of its own content. However, Wikipedia is not a directory of everything in the universe that exists or has existed. Please see Wikipedia:Alternative outlets for alternatives. Wikipedia articles are not:
Lists or repositories of loosely associated topics such as (but not limited to) quotations, aphorisms, or persons (real or fictional). (See Wikipedia:Stand-alone lists#Appropriate topics for lists for clarification.)
Genealogical entries.
The White or Yellow Pages. Contact information such as phone numbers, fax numbers and e-mail addresses.
Directories, directory entries, electronic program guide, or a resource for conducting business. For example, an article on a radio station should not list upcoming events, current promotions, current schedules, etc., although mention of major events, promotions or historically significant program lists and schedules may be acceptable.
Sales catalogues.
Non-encyclopedic cross-categorizations, such as "people from ethnic / cultural / religious group X employed by organization Y" or "restaurants specializing in food type X in city Y". "

Since there is now an AFD running about this list-article, at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of state parties of the Democratic Party (United States), which takes precedence over any discussion here, I think continued discussion should be there, not here. Unless/until the AFD is closed. But offhand, this list-article could be improved by providing some information about each state party, not just linking to them. Could be in tabular format. But again, i suggest discussion at the AFD for now. --doncram 19:35, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Infoboxes are to assist the general reader. There is no requirement that infoboxes appear at only one page. Given that the DNC is a committee made up of reps from these state parties it is entirely appropriate to have the infobox here as well. Capitalismojo (talk) 18:28, 4 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

As I noted in the soon-to-be-closed AfD, I removed the infobox as its use in this context is not compliant with MOS:INFOBOX. WP:INFOBOXPURPOSE says that "the purpose of an infobox [is] to summarize (and not supplant) key facts that appear in the article". Infoboxes are supposed to highlight facts that are (or that should be) in the body an article. Except for a link to the article about the party's overseas wing, none of the information in the infobox is in the article and I can't imagine that it would be even if this list were brought to FL status. This shouldn't come as a surprise as {{Infobox political party}} was designed to be used in an article about a political party, not a list of political parties. I can't conceive of a way that this article could be brought into compliance with the Manual of Style without removing the infobox. Graham (talk) 02:09, 29 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for explaining your reasoning, and yes I agree. Could a copy of the infobox be placed here just for reference as to its fields, which suggest possible columns for the table. I can't copy it conveniently from where I am editing. Also I am sort of appalled to see, in edit mode, that the infobox is hard-coded here...it is not a displayed live copy of an infobox at the national level article (so it does not automatically update). Table[edit]

In these edits I began tabulating some info. What data columns and types of notes should be included? I started with two measures of state party strength within their state, the fractions of upper house & lower house seats held, which is available for many/most states.
