Early seasons[edit]

I've managed to source the bulk of this list through Soccerbot and Soccerbase, but am struggling for game stats pre-1996-97 season. Can anybody help? Heightwatcher (talk) 12:24, 12 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Result[edit]

Multiple hat-tricks[edit]

The references prove that Shearer scored at least 11 hat-tricks. They don't prove that he scored exactly 11. If you want to claim the table is a complete list rather than a partial list, you need a separate reference to that effect. jnestorius(talk) 13:28, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Incredible. This has been scrutinised throughout the WP:FLC process, it's a shame you didn't contribute to that. Every single hat-trick ever scored in the Premier League is in this table. There is no one single WP:RS to cover these. The list is complete. As for "proving they're current", it now appears that the next thing you'll ask for is proof that their names are spelt a particular way. I'll happily remove that information. Perhaps next time you decide to do this kind of thing to featured content, you could discuss it with the relevant parties before slapping a maintenance notice on the article. How do you know " Every single hat-trick ever scored in the Premier League is in this table." How do you know you haven't slipped up and missed one? I don't care whether the article is delisted or not. I only care that the original research is removed, either by removing the section or adding appropriate references. That can be done by normal editing and Talk-page discussion. If you don't want to participate in that, that's your prerogative, but I don't think you should remove a valid tag from the page. jnestorius(talk) 16:18, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You didn't discuss this on the talkpage before you tagged a section on featured content. I've removed the highlights pertaining to current players (despite this being non-controversial information, and hence not really needing referencing). I've added an external link which may well cover your OR concerns. I would rather you followed up with your tagging by taking this to FLRC if you are still not satisfied. That link would be ideal, apart from the mistakes. I found another on LexisNexis [The Independent (London) April 11, 2008 Pg. 58] that's out of date but has AFAIK only one mistake [Ruud] in places 1-18. But really the only way to guarantee continuous accuracy is to have a realtime query of an up-to-date database, which I hope is what Statbunker will be once they debug their SQL. I also wanted to say thanks for actually giving a damn about the quality of things here. It's easy for us to "not see the wood for the trees". Your detailed examination of this list is useful and your continuing investigations in how best to solve the problems you've identified is appreciated. I apologise if (if? if?!) I've come across as hostile and defensive over one of "my" lists. Just one of those things. So. Let's see how we go. But my original offer stands. If you really think there's a need for a maintenance tag, or you have concerns over synthesis or OR, please do list it at FLRC. It only took about 300 hours of work (between me and a number of other editors) to reference each and every hat-trick, but I understand your concerns over comprehensiveness.... 4 Goals in a Game[edit]

Also, in the introductory paragraph:

'Twenty players have scored more than three goals in a match; of these, four players, Andrew Cole, Alan Shearer, Jermain Defoe and Dimitar Berbatov have scored five'.

Add:

and only six of the twenty players have managed it more than once: Andrew Cole, Dimitar Berbatov, Michael Owen, Robbie Fowler, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Frank Lampard, who have all achieved the feat twice.

A simpler table could look something like this only listing players who have achieved this feat more than once. As more players accomplish that, it shows who has done this the most number of times.

Also looking at those 14 dates, this has been done:

4 times in December 3 times in March and once in February, April, May, August, September, October and November.

It's never been done in January, (obviously the season is closed in June/July).

I don't think you need a separate table. If it is important to distinguish 4 and 5 goal hauls then just add a new column to the existing table with number of goals scored and make it sortable. Edit request on 25 June 2013[edit]

The entry for Robert Earnshaw has an error. Charlton were the home team and Earnshaw scored his hatrick for West Bromwich Albion who were the away team. It was Charlton 1 WBA 4 not as displayed on the page.

Not done: I think it's actually correct, although the table format confused me a bit at first, but, from the key at the top of the table:
  • He's marked with a "dagger" because he scored the hat-trick as a substitute.
  • In the For column is West Bromwich Albion, because that's who he scored it for.
  • In the Against column is Charlton Athletic, because that's who he scored it against.
  • Charlton Athletic are marked with a *, because they were the home team.
  • The Result is given as 1-4, because the home team score is given first.

Reference #229 (Man City 3–0 West Brom) has an incorrect link. It is the same link as reference #230 (Everton 5-3 Blackpool).

"The fastest scorer of a four-goal haul on record in England"[edit]

Ole Gunnar Solskjær is described a such, for the four goals in twelve minutes that he once scored against Forest, and I know that cites an article from The Independent as a reference, but it is a false claim - in 1931, W.G. Pictures on the side - most PL hat-tricks from midfield[edit]

I just thought it should be noted that on the right-hand side where it displays pictures of PL players past and present it states that Frank Lampard, with 3 PL hat-tricks, has scored the most out of any midfielder.

The BBC website cited has still to be updated with the now new correct information regarding the "quickest Premier League hat-trick". I have contacted them regarding their now incorrect information, but it may not be updated for some time. Perfect Hat-tricks[edit]

A perfect hat-trick is a rare feat: a player scoring once each with left foot, right foot and their head. I believe this has only happened on 31 occasions in the Premier League and I do not believe any list exists which displays these by date and opposition etc. Given the familiarity of the term I find it difficult to believe that there is nothing like this already online. Since this list is probably the most comprehensive list of Premier League hat-tricks online, might it be constructive to include markers to indicate where a hat-trick was perfect? These shouldn't be too difficult to cite given the relatively small number and that this information is usually found in the match report (again, it's a very rare feat). Youngest and Oldest scorers of a PL hat-trick[edit]

This article lacks any mention of youngest and oldest hat-trick scorers in the PL. Does anyone have a good source for this information? I beleieve Michael Owen was the youngest at 18 years old vs Sheffield Wednesday on 14th Feb 1998 - but who is the oldest to achieve the feat?
