Messi was in the 2005 FIFA Confederations Cup squad that got to be runners up, it should be added in the honours field with a silver medal. Club Goal tally is wrong

Dear Team, Club Goal tally for Messi currently shows as 702 but it doesn't add up. It should be 691. Clearly during times when Cristiano Ronaldo just reached 700, Wikipedia showing Messi more than that is very controversial and wrong news. Please edit that with utmost urgency. It's a big blunder.

Thank you Aravind — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.7.196.201 (talk) 09:38, 11 October 2022 (UTC)

The tally isn’t wrong, it also includes Messi’s goals for Barcelona B and C. All of Ronaldo’s goals have come for club first teams, whereas Messi has the benefit of Barca’s youth teams also playing in the Spanish league system. – PeeJay 10:13, 11 October 2022 (UTC)

In 2022 Argentina won the 2022 finalisma trophy held in England where messi won man of the match as his side won 3-0. This trophy does count as an honour for his country and therefore should be added to the page Elliotstone25 (talk) 19:19, 26 November 2022 (UTC)

Barcelona-centric lead

The current edit of the page emphasises a Barcelona-centric display of Messi's contributions as a player over his overall career as a professional footballer; I sought to rectify this (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Lionel_Messi&oldid=1123696969) but my contributions were reverted by @FMSky who stated "[the page] is fine before, and barca centered isnt a bad thing, he is mainly known as a barca player". By using a club-based slant in the construction of the lead, it violates WP:NPOV, namely in relation to the requirements regarding fairness, proportionality, and impartiality (especially weight and undue weight). I attempted to engage in dialogue with FMSky on their talk page but received no response until I initially brought it to WP:3. MrloniBoo (talk) 20:52, 26 November 2022 (UTC)

are you aware that this article has 'good article' status --FMSky (talk) 21:27, 26 November 2022 (UTC)
"Good Article" status should not preclude improvements to the page; WP:GREAT says editors must focus on making pages better because there is nothing that defines a "perfect page", even good article status. The Barcelona-centric approach to the lead negatively impacts the reading of the page, as it is not a comprehensive overview of Messi's career as a professional. I am not suggesting wholesale changes here but clear priority given to a specific viewpoint (i.e., his time at Barcelona) is objectively damaging, for any page. MrloniBoo (talk) 18:24, 27 November 2022 (UTC)
Have you even followed his career at all? he is almost exclusively known for his time at barca, so barca-centric is actually a good thing. anyway, maybe someone other wants to weigh in on this --FMSky (talk) 18:35, 27 November 2022 (UTC)
Messi is known for being a professional footballer; the club(s) he has been attached to should not take precedence over his overall career (the page is about him in the singular, not about him and Barcelona) so keeping the lead under its current structure diminishes the notability to his post-Barcelona career. You question whether I "followed his career at all" but following my edit would better chronicle his career as a whole (i.e., by not being so closely slanted to Barcelona). Again, I'm not suggesting wholesale changes here and as @Robby.is.on said, the current incarnation of the page should not be precluded from improvement because of a status handed 13 years ago. MrloniBoo (talk) 00:51, 28 November 2022 (UTC)
I have no comment on the overall dispute. But :are you aware that this article has 'good article' status is obviously a fallacious argument in more ways than one: 1. "good article" does not mean an article cannot be improved, 2. the article was listed as a good article in 2009, a large part of Messi's career has happened since then. Robby.is.on (talk) 22:20, 27 November 2022 (UTC)

Messi moved to Spain at age 12, not 13

Interview on CBC "The Current" this morning notes that Messi moved to Spain at age 12, not 13 as stated in the Wiki article. It also notes that he moved because of a health condition, the treatment for which was unaffordable in Argentina. That part is entirely missing in the wiki article. https://www.cbc.ca/radio/thecurrent/lionel-messi-world-cup-1.6669331 165.189.142.148 (talk) 21:00, 30 November 2022 (UTC)

He moved to Spain at 13. His trial was in September 2000 when he was 13 years and 2 months. He finally, formally, moved to Spain in February 2001. This is well documented in numerous news articles for over 20 years.[1] We also mention his health condition, but we would need an explicit source stating that he moved for that reason alone. Instead most sources say he looked for a new club that could help cover the costs, not that he moved because of the condition. Koncorde (talk) 00:57, 1 December 2022 (UTC)

Change "Widely regarded as one of the greatest", back to it's original "Considered one of the best players in the world and widely regarded as on of the greatest". I believe the "best players in the world" part was removed after Messi's lacklustre debut season in Paris. But he's back to his best, and is considered one of, if not, the best player in the world. I’m going to chime in here as I wasn’t part of the previous discussion. Looking at the edit you want to make, it’s a lot more than just moving the mention Barcelona from the opening para. It’s removing lines that were previously agreed upon, adding sources that are not required as they are in the article body, and also needlessly shifting material around in the international para. Keeping it specific to Barcelona which was your issue (“Barcelona-centric lead”), I don’t see an issue with mentioning them in the opening para. He spent the best part of two decades there and it’s where he made his name. It’s just one line. The club para further down then goes into much more detail. Confusing language

Granted, I'm just an American that only follows soccer every 4 years, but I found the following sentence confusing: "On 18 December, Messi made his record 26th World Cup finals appearance and won the World Cup ..." I read that as he has been the the World Cup finals 26 times, which, given that the tournament is every 4 years, would make Messi quite old. Perhaps I am reading it incorrectly, but there may be others like me that are confused by this wording. »NMajdan·talk 16:10, 19 December 2022 (UTC)

Yeah, it's a bit confusing, because the World Cup tournament is officially the World Cup finals (i.e., the culmination of a 4-year campaign that ends with a 32-team event) and there's also the World Cup Final, the championship match. We could reword the start to "Messi made a record 26th appearance in a World Cup match..." or something like that? Adeletron 3030 (talkedits) 16:14, 19 December 2022 (UTC)

Hi Synotia, thanks for your edit, but it was reverted because footballer's infoboxes on Wikipedia list only the players league games and goals. Thanks. Kosack (talk) 15:22, 19 December 2022 (UTC)
So the higher figure included friendlies I assume? Synotia (talk) 15:55, 19 December 2022 (UTC)
We also don't count appearances from cups (i.e Copa del Rey, Coup de France) and the Champions League in the infobox. Adeletron 3030 (talkedits) 15:57, 19 December 2022 (UTC)
Why though? Synotia (talk) 16:02, 19 December 2022 (UTC)
Namely consistency. While we may be able to find statistics for every competition for modern day players, finding statistics for every competition that every player in history featured in is not as simple. League statistics are typically much more consistently documented throughout history, so it's a much more stable and comparable figure. Kosack (talk) 16:17, 19 December 2022 (UTC)
