Caves

Can someone please tell me what is a "12th century caves" in Basava Kalyana. Do these caves have 12th century paintings/sculptures??. Generally caves systems dont have time designations attached because most are millions of years old.

Karnataka Flag

Although the flag is unofficial, it is widely used in Karnataka for all practical purposes. Flag of Karnataka is even being hoisted on the occasion of Kannada Rajyotsava. Hence reference to the flag is necessary. So I'm reinserting the image clearly indicating the flag is unofficial. Gnanapiti 19:53, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

Karnataka Literature

I am trying to put together a page (hyper linked as Karnataka Literature listing some great Kannada /Sanskrit scholars/poets who were patronized by various Kannada Kingdoms. On this page I have mentioned the reference source also. However, for several scholars, the names of their most important works are not mentioned. In some other cases, I have mentioned their names but am not sure if the work is in Kannada or Sanskrit or Prakrit. If anyone out there can provide this information and add to this page, I think it will be more complete work. If anyone can think of any other literatures I have not mentioned, please feel free to add to the list. Please remember that because of the nature of Indian kingdoms, poets and scholars were often patronized by multiple kingdoms and sometimes by overlords and feduciaries at the same time. Please be sure to add soruces and references.Lets bring out the glory that is Karnataka Literature!!

Pictures

Nice pictures. Can you please add a few more like one picture each from Badami Chalukya (Pattadakal), Rashtrakuta (Ellora), Kalyani Chalukya (Itigi or Kuruvatti or Lakkundi). Many of these pictures can be found in www.indoarch.org and has copy right protection. I have not done this before or I would have done it myself.

I note there is a seperate article on Devadasis which mentions Karnatika so the information can go there. My source was the Operation World (website) but I note the BBC and Newsweek also have articles, though the extent of the problem is a matter of some dispute it seems. Admittedly the economy wasn`t the ideal place but money seems to be changing hands so... I am sorry to add something negative but I felt the issue merited wider awareness..Andycjp 9th June 2005

Four southern states?

The article on South India says there are five States: Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andra Prahesh and Goa; but this article says there are only four? I don't feel that I know enough about India or Wikipedia to change it myself. Should this be changed to five? Harry

  • Although it is widely used both in India and elsewhere, the divisions of north and south india are not altogether clear. Many Indians claim that the reason for the two different regions is purely linguistic, meaning that North Indians speak Indo-European languages and South Indians speak Dravidian Languages. Going by this definition, Goa is in North India because its primary spoken language, Konkani, is Indo-European, and also both of the official languages, Marathi and English, are also Indo-European. Other people say that it is a geographic term while still others argue that it is a political region. Some others contend that it is a fusion of the three. If it were possible, I would like to stop that term from being used at all because it does not make sense and its meaning is constantly being disputed. However, since our job here at Wikipedia is to define terms, I believe that we should not include Goa as one of the states, meaning that we should edit South India. My basis for this argument is the fact that the majority of people use the term "South India" to refer to a cultural or linguistic region and since Goa is very distant both linguistically and culturally to other parts of Southern India, it should not be included as a part of it. The langauge distribution of Karnataka is as follows:

The State of Karnataka has a population of 4,49,77,201 persons, according to the 1991 Census of India. The regional language of the State is Kannada whose speakers constitute 64.75 per cent of the population.
The major linguistic minority groups in the State comprise the speakers of Urdu (9.72%), Telugu (8.34%), Marathi (3.95%), Tamil (3.82%), Malayalam (1.69%), Tulu (3.38%), Konkani (1.78%), and Hindi (1.87%).

I'm not sure but a considerable proportion speak Kodava (or Coorgi) language.Can somebody reseach and put it up. Manjukirans 09:55, 8 June 2007 (UTC)

Jog Falls highest in Asia?

According to [4] Dudhsagar has a height of 600 meters, while Gersoppa (Jog) has a height of only 253. It is common lore in Karnataka that Jog is the highest in India, I've seen that written, though I can't recall the source. However, I'm not sure that it is true. Perhaps it depends upon exactly what is meant, i.e. perhaps Jog has the longest single drop, (Dudhsagar is a cascade). Without more definite knowledge, I think it is safer to say that Jog is one of the highest falls in Asia. --BostonMA 14:25, 19 February 2006 (UTC)

Where this article is heading...

My next long term project will be to consolidate this article to a point where a peer review actually makes sense. Of course, I think we are lucky to have some great editors concurrently working on this article, and so I request their participation in whipping this article back into shape! I have restructured the lead (I realize that it is by no means perfect..consider it to be a work-in-progress). I have also consolidated the History section per Wikipedia:Summary Style. A good portion (if not all) of the old history version had been copied and pasted from OurKarnataka. I will continue to work on Geography and Demographics, and hopefully, we will be in a good position to push Karnataka for a constructive peer review in a couple of months.AreJay 03:36, 2 March 2006 (UTC)

minerals and industry

I have added useful info to agriculture and tourism sections. Can someone add useful info on minerals and Industry. Just claiming that Karnataka has 5% of multinationals is not good enough. Also a few more good pictures on agriculture, industry etc can make this page more attractive.

Hi. Over the years I have enjoyed following the scent of the wild in Karnataka. I have put together a gallery of pictures (a very small selection from of all the photos I have) for Rangantittu Bird Sanctuary, Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary, Bandipur National Park. I am in the process of adding photos to Nagarahole and Biligirirangan Hills WLS also. It takes some time to dig up the right ones from my albums, scan them into format and upload into wikipedia. Enjoy the photos!!. If anyone has photos from WLS from north Karnataka, please take time to create hyperlinks to those Sanctuaries and add pictures. A picture says a thousand words, and I believe even millions of words can't justify and convey the beauty of Karnataka.

Tiger!!

Finally, after nine years of photography, seven wildlife sanctuaries in two states (Karnataka and A.P., some with multiple visits) and after four seperate sightings of the migthy beast, I had the opportunity to get a long enough view to take a clear photograph. Enjoy!!. Karnataka stands 3rd in the country for Tiger population per 2000 census with the numbers quoted at greater than 400 (argueable with recent concerns of poaching through out the country).

Vijayanagar architecture

I have created a page for Vijayanagar Architecture using source infomation from respected authors and photos taken by myself in 2004, focussing on the niche aspects of their style. While the pages on Vijayanagar and Hampi give plenty of scope to view Vijayanagar temples, the page Vijayanagar Architecture tries to focus on interesting details of why, where and how they choose certian styles. Badami Chalukya Architecture

I have created a basic template with some photos I got from a friend. I will later elaborate more on this page from a source that is exclusively on the architecture of Badami Chalukyas and after my visit to Aihole-Badami-Pattadakal in Karnataka when I plan to take more pictures of temples, inscriptions, sculptures and coins etc. For now I have also added photos to Badami, Badami Cave Temples and main Chalukya page. Please feel free to add more photos to these pages provided they can improve the infomation on these pages. I have also made an "see also" include to this page in the main Karnataka page. The long term goal is to consolidate all styles of architecture from Badami Chalukya-Mysore Kingdom, spanning an era of some 1300 years. Enjoy!!

I've been cleaning up this article since yesterday. I've cpedited tourism, transport, economy and geography sections. As a result the article has reduced from a humongous 56 kb to a more reasonable 44 kb. I will be cpediting History section soon. Right now, I am only summarising to conform to WP:SS. Once this is done, we will have to get down to cleaning up for tone, POV etc.,. After that is done, hopefully we can pass it through peer review and see how it goes. Air transportation

I dont know how anybody can make statements such as "Karnataka is well connected to the rest of India and the international world.". I think Karnataka's air transport system is poor compared to international scenario. Only a few international flights start from the state. Karnataka being a multilingual state, various linguistic groups have been demanding for separate states based on language in the regions where those languages are spoken by the majority. Tuluvas and Kodavas are major ethnic groups which aspire to form separate states.

Can you please delete the above mentioned statement this is not true, Majority of Kodava people want to be with karnataka and few Kodavas now have asked for regional autonomous district with in karnataka and Tulu people have never asked for separation from karnataka, in fact Tulu people are fore front in promoting Karnataka.

KANNADA is the only official language of KARNTAKA. You have wrongly included in English and Hindi. You may verify this information with Andhra Pradesh only Telugu, Kerala only Malayalam and Tamil Nadu only Tamil is mentioned. Immediately remove English and Hindi as this information totally incorrect. If it is not done you are treating Karnataka separately compared to other states which violates Constitution and rouse passions. ರಾ ಸು ಮೇಟಿಕುರ್ಕೆ

First of all, cool down; "samvidhaanada bagge ashtu high-level maatu kathe beda". I agree Hindi is not treated as an official language. According to the Karnataka Official Language act 1963, Kannada is the official language of the state. English is also recognized as a language valid for all official purposes. Autosizing images as upright=0.90 plus ALT

I am planning to change all the images to use auto-sizing parameters, based on each viewer's Special:Preferences for the default image size, to fit either PC or handheld viewing. For example, adding the image parameter "|upright=0.90" will autosize the image as 90% of the user's default size. A typical large portrait is set simply as "|upright" (with no number), which defaults to about 76%, and avoids the "over-powering huge pictures" of people in close-up portraits. Also, I will add the "alt=" parameter to give a short physical description of the image (at mouse-over) for sight-impaired readers who rely on written, or machine-spoken, text about the image contents. -Wikid77 (talk) 16:54, 28 October 2011 (UTC)

I think the paragraph "Parts of modern-day Karnataka were occupied by the Chola Empire..." is too long. It talks mostly of the Chola conquests in Karnataka, going to the length of mentioning in details each of their Kings' names while some of the greatest rulers of Rashtrakuta, Chalukya, Kalyani Chalukyas, and Karnataka (Vijayanagara) empire do not find a mention. Such details in the summary is not required and I believe this paragraph should be cut down to two sentences.

I suggest it should be cut down to this: "Parts of modern-day Karnataka, including the whole of Gangavadai were occupied by the Chola Empire between 990-1210 AD but the Cholas eventually lost Gangavadi in 1116 to the Hoysalas under Vishnuvardhana"

A few points

  • The flag shown at the top right side is not the official flag of the state as is later written in the article itself;so it should not be shown in the infobox.
  • the second external link Karnataka Government Information Department leads to a japanese language website which isn't exactly about karnataka as far as i could understand with the help of google translate.

Literacy rate given in the infobox and in Education section need to be updated. It still have the 2001 census data, as of census 2011 literacy rate in Karnata is 75.60%.

Is Karnataka the land of only Kannadigas?

The lead in this article states that "Karnataka is the land of Kannadigas". Is it not being unfair to other native ethnic groups of the state?     or

    Karnataka, the land of Kannadigas, Tuluvas, Konkanis and Kodavas is a state in South West India.

I would prefer something on the lines of the first option. If we go on with the 2nd option, then we'll be bombarded with edit requests, asking each group to be named. Coming to the first option, if we can somehow refine "...is a state in South West India", and replace it with a larger sentence, because just the short sentence will look tacky. Niri, its true we should keep it simple, but it would be a misrepresentation of sorts (but again, it depends on how we define Kannadiga–if we define it as the speakers of Kannada, then we'd have an issue, but if we define it as the residents of the Karunadu region, then it would be fine). I am not really in favor of removing the "...land of Kannadigas.." part. Giving a broader meaning to include Tuluvas, Konkani, Kodavas would be ok, but that should not lead to other ethno-linguistic demanding their inclusion! One out of the context issue. Kannadiga wikipedians keep an eye on some of the Karnataka related wiki pages, especially those which got featured star because of the hard work put up by some early wikipedians such as Dinesh Kannambadi. Do we even need that sentence there? What about the rest of the people who speak other languages than those listed there? Those who are born in Karnataka but speak a different language cannot claim Karnataka to be their land? That sentence is jingoistic at best. Sir, along with Konkanis and Tuluvas, why are not Tamilians included in linguistic minorities of Karnataka. A large number of Tamilians are settled primarily in three districts of Karnataka, namely Bangalore, Mysore, Chamarajanagar (to a limited or very limited extent in the Mandya district of Karnataka, where there is an ancient Tamilian settlement/township at both Melukote (in the vicinity of the Chennakeshava and Narasimha temples, as well as Kiretonnur (known as Thondanur in Tamil). Reliable sources regarding occupation of parts of Kannada country by Cholas between 1000-1200 AD

I request Pied hornbill to discuss and consider the references sourced by me which are placed below before arbitrarily deleting my contributions. My contributions are based on not one but two books by K.A.Nilakanta Sastri. These should be discussed before Pied hornbill decides to act as a self-appointed admin. In support of my contention that the Cholas held parts of Karnataka for around 200 years from 1000 AD to 1200 AD, here are excerpts from two books by K.A.Nilakanta Sastri. The first book is 'A History of South India - From Prehistoric Times to the fall of Vijayanagar' - Fourth Edition, Oxford India Paperbacks (2003).

At page 176 of this the following text proves rule of the Cholas over parts of Karnataka:

Quote: "Rajaraja II ruled generally in peace till about 1173. Having no son, he chose Rajadhiraja II, a grandson of Vikrama Chola by a daughter, for the succession and appointed him yuvaraja in 1166. Rajaraja II's empire extended over the whole of the Telugu country up to Daksharama (Draksharama) and over large sections of Kongunade and the eastern part of Gangavadi." Unquote.
Let me add that Rajaraja Chola II ruled between 1146-1173. So I think you would accept that the hold of Chola over Gangavadi which is currently part of Mysore district and also contained parts of what is now the modern Mandya district in Karnataka, continued much beyond 1116 and hence my claim is not 'unsubstantiated' and I may be permitted to retain my part of the text.
That is not all. There is an excerpt from another book by K.A.Nilakanta Sastri titled "Advanced History of India" (1984 reprint), Allied Publishers (Low prized text book) at page 292 which reads:
Quote: "Kulottunga III undertook successful expeditions in Kongu country (Tagadur) and defended Gangavadi against Hoysala Ballala II. He also fought successful wars against the Cheras and performed Vijayabhisheka at Karuvur in A.D. 1193 while returning from his victories against Hoysala Ballala II and the Cheras." Unquote.

I may point out that Kulottunga Chola III ruled between 1178 AD to 1215 or 1218 AD. His rule though, was weak and tottered following his defeat by the Pandyas in 1205 AD. Before 1205 AD he was a very powerful king.

Here is another excerpt from a second book by Sri K.A.Nilakanta Sastri titled "Advanced History of India" (1984 reprint), Allied Publishers (Low prized text book) at page 293

Quote: "Following his checking the growth of Hoysala power in Gangavadi and adjoining areas, Kulottunga's relations however, with Hoysala Ballala II became friendly, for Ballala married a Chola princess and both sides ceased fighting and ensured each other's territorial integrity. Ballala's attention however, was soon diverted towards protecting his northern conquests following the frequent incursions of the warrior-like Singhana, the Yadava who succeeded Jaitugi." Unquote.

Re: reviewer BilCat of proposed change regarding inage in Infobox

The current infobox image on Karnataka was labeled "Map of Karnataka" when in fact it was a map of India showing the location of Karnataka. Users with low-bandwidth connections don't load images unless they are the ones they want. I had recently viewed the page, and in fact I wanted to know where Karnataka was in India, and so left that page to look elsewhere. It was only later that I discovered that the image was the one I would have liked to see all along, but was mis-labeled. Did you look at the page and my edit and not understand what the caption said?

Also, for people actually looking in a hurry for maps of Karnataka, the TOC heading "Sub-divisions" might be clearer if it said "Political Sub-divisions" or just "Districts of Karnataka" or even better "Districts of Karnataka and maps". It would also make more style sense if the image "Regions_of_KA" appeared first, side-by-side with "Karnataka_districts-new", then with the text listing the districts following the images. This does seem the proper article to list the districts. Why doesn't the text listing the districts mention their region?

A reduced-resolution version of Karnataka_topo_deu.png would be useful at the Geography section, or a map showing the three zones mentioned in the text. KANNADA is one and only official language of KARNATAKA

I would like to re-iterate Kannada is the one and only official language of KARNATAKA. English has no place under this heading. I am not sure what you are trying to convey here. I have read THE KARNATAKA OFFICIAL LANGUAGE ACT, 1963 and also THE KARNATAKA LOCAL AUTHORITIES (OFFICIAL LANGUAGE) ACT, 1981 which is an amendment to 1963 ACT. Hence Please remove ENGLISH from the heading Official Language of Karnataka.

I would also like you to know that I have been an active contributor to Kannada Wiktionary and have contribution of nearly 70,000 edits for the last 2+ years.

It is quite clearly mentioned that Kannada is the official language, with English also valid for official purposes.
Also as a note: It is not necessarily our aim to maintain consistency with other states. Other states may have other language acts; as far as Karnataka is concerned, the Karnataka Official Language Act, 1963 and subsequent amendments are valid. Thank you. "Official Language" and "valid for official use" are totally two different things. As far as Official language of Karnataka is concerned it is only KANNADA and nothing else. The 1963 Act and subsequent amendments all tell the same thing. Sahyadri case judgement is concerned more with Medium of instruction rather than official language issue and it is irrelevant in this case.

I am merely trying to convey to the world, whatever the Act says. The act says that Kannada is the official language, with English also valid for official use. I suppose the "certain parts of state" you mention are disputed areas, such as Belgaum and Kasargod. Anyway, the Act merely says that Kannada is the official language, English is valid for all purposes, and Hindi is valid for use in legislature. The Heading here is "Official Language" and the answer to that as per the act is "KANNADA". Just because some other language can also be used for official purposes is some cases, it can not be accorded the status of "Official Language". I am not at all referring to the areas you have mentioned. In general if more than 15% people speak a particular language they can use their language for official purposes. Again that will not give their language the status of official language of the state. Mentioning English under the heading of "Official Language" is totally unwarranted, unacceptable and incorrect by any means. Request to add Regional Languages of Karnataka

I have added Major regional languages in the InfoBox.i.e. Tulu,Kodava,Konkani,Beary Which was reverted saying there are no "Official regional languages" in K'taka. Unlike other languages like Telugu, Tamil which are spoken by the people who (or whose ancestors) moved to Karnataka from neighboring states, Above mentioned regional languages are native to Karnataka or spoken b y native people.

Answer: FYKI, I have never mentioned them as "widely" spoken. Regarding Telugu, Tamil etc I have already answered your question in my original post.  May be you should visit individual wiki pages of these languages and check the origin and later do the same for Telugu, Tamil, Urdu etc.
I am sure you know the difference between (Telugu/Tamil/Urdu/Marati) vs (Tulu/Kodava/Konkani/Beary). It is not about the numbers it is about the origin. I'm afraid if you go by numbers Mandarin(Chinese) would be a regional language of the United States!!

Demonym

I've reverted an IP editor who attempted to add Tuluva and Kodava as demonyms to the infobox. The current value for the demonym is Kannadiga, which appears to refer to Kannada ethnicity rather than to the state of Karnataka. List of adjectives and demonyms for states and territories of India gives several options (including the archaic "Carnatic") but none of them are sourced. Reiterating my point for the benefit of other editors, I feel that the addition of pictures adds very little in terms of recognizability of symbols but hurts readability as every item will be split into multiple lines. If visual identification is required, the reader can visit the linked page to see pictures. @Shrikanthv: It is not "South vs West" as you put it. It is about the inclusion of the word western in the lede as in this text: a state considered to be part of southern and western India which I had edited in here is reliably sourced since the Ministry of Minority Affairs includes Karnataka in its 'Western Zone'. In fact, not only are citations missing for many statements, but the citation format also isn't matching as per the Featured Article guidelines (WP:citing sources). 1. History section

As mentioned earlier, I have listed the missing citations for statements in just the first 2 sections. The list is too long to mention for the entire article, and there are many more unsourced statements in the subsequent sections. Kindly note that this is a WP:Featured Article. And it's not just about missing citations, even the citation format needs to be accurate for FA (WP:citing sources).

Aviator423, yes, thanks I kind of know what the requirements for GAs and FAs are (sneak a look at my userpage bling) - this article was assessed for FA back in 2007, I won't be surprised if a bit of crud has accumulated since then, or if it would fail FAR now. I was just concerned that sticking a tag on without expanding on your concerns wouldn't help fix the problem. My instinct is to say "the other 4 southern Indian sister states", but there may be some other variable in play here, so I'm pointing it out rather than making the change. Representative pictures

It seems a bit odd to me to have a page about a modern Indian state that in its photos has multiple ancient temples but no evidence of modern civilization, especially considering the state in question contains Bangalore, the IT capital of India. ● I believe that the Vijaynagara dynasty was one of the most important dynasty, and everything flourished under Krishnadevaraya's rule. However, such an important ruler has not been mentioned anywhere in the article.

● Fix Reference 65
● In Flora & Fauna, it says that 'Karnataka has 38,720 km2 forest area', etc. The source is from 2007. Are the figures still the same?
● Economy figures and statistics keep changing. Most sources are from 10 yrs back. Add recent sources and update info if possible. The charts are also old.
● The image 'Norwegian Star' only shows the ship. It does not give any different portrayal of Karnataka. I feel it can be removed or replaced with a better one.
Otherwise, the article is good. Thank You.
