Older PM?[edit]

Who is the oldest PM? Isn't it him?

Joe Clark?

Turner is the oldest living former Prime Minister of Canada, he was born in 1929 (ten years before Clark). see Joe Clark article. GoodDay 22:29, 20 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Why no infobox image[edit]

How come there's no infobox image? Why not just move up one of the images from farther down the page? 23skidoo 06:33, 28 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Emigratedas a baby?[edit]

"He was born in Richmond, Surrey, England to Leonard Turner and Phyllis Gregory, and emigrated to Canada as a baby in 1932."

Sounds a bit weird, that phrase does. Shouldn't it say his family emigrated? Or he, as a baby, did it alone?DDD DDD 04:33, 8 December 2006 (UTC).[reply]

I have removed all references to "immigrating" and "emigrating." Turner is NOT an immigrant and he IS Canadian-born. Even though he was born overseas, because he was born to a Canadian parent (his mother), he is a naturally-born Canadian, as he acquired his Canadian citizenship at birth. Why is there no images?[edit]

Why is there no images of John Turner? He is a former prime minister of a country, I think he would be important enough to have a picture of him in this article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Preparationh (talkcontribs) 18:16, 28 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Finally! Thanks Abebenjoe I tried to put in a picture for this guy, but it was copyrighted, now what's left is Kim Campbell.

Why are we using such an awful picture of Turner as an old man? The other Canadian prime ministers all seem to have photos of them when they were in office. The Parliament of Canada website has a portrait photo of Turner (http://www2.parl.gc.ca/Parlinfo/Files/Parliamentarian.aspx?Item=2d6cfb9d-1d91-419c-835b-2bc796126fab&Section=Publications), surely we can use this government sourced photo? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jabalong (talkcontribs) 03:54, 22 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I agree Jabalong, the photo of Turner is terrible. He looks terribly old in it, unrecognizable from his time in public life. There's gotta be a better pictures around somewhere to use for him. Dcraig9 (talk) 13:06, 24 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Here's a good one too: http://www.mhs.mb.ca/docs/mb_history/06/liberalparty.jpg --Doradus (talk) 15:15, 13 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Here's another good one... from his time in politics during the late 1980s: http://img265.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=158640148_JohnNTurner1988_122_54lo.jpg — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.137.231.57 (talk) 18:28, 10 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I find this a rather confusing section of the MOS, since it (like much of the MOS, IMO) runs counter to colloquial usage. Does it mean that the first sentence of the lede should read:

  • … was a Canadian politician and lawyer who served as the 17th prime minister of Canada?

or

  • … was a Canadian politician and lawyer who served as the 17th Prime Minister of Canada?

Thanks for any input. AleatoryPonderings (talk) 19:49, 20 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Date of Passing[edit]

The initial report states that he Passed away "Friday Evening", Meaning the Date of his Death is Friday, September 18th, 2020.[1] WanukeX (talk) 18:50, 19 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Coat of arms[edit]

Is it necessary? Seems excessive to me, but I defer to others. AleatoryPonderings (talk) 03:47, 21 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

please see WP:GAN. If you can steer this article through that review process and get a GA rating, you can then bring it over here and nominate it at DYK

Former Canadian Prime Minister John Turner

  • Comment: This is my first DYK nomination; If there is any procedural miss or if I have done something incorrectly, please assist me. Specifically, I didn't know what date to use. Since we worked recently on making some improvements at WP:ITNRD yesterday, I have used that date. However, if I need to do something different, please let me know. Thanks in advance.

Nominated by Ktin (talk). Self-nominated at 14:47, 21 September 2020 (UTC).[reply]

  • Unfortunately, DYK requires articles to either be new (this article was created in 2002), a GA (article is not and currently not under nomination), or expanded 5x recently (has not, and considering the current length and depth unlikely to ever be). Hence it fails - I would recomment getting it to GA status before renominating. Juxlos (talk) 15:43, 21 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Juxlos, pardon my missing out on that important step. I misunderstood that the DYK process is about surfacing interesting facts etc. However, it seems like the objective is that plus showcasing articles that have changed status (e.g. GA, 5x updates, new creates). Please recommend what needs to be done to this nomination to be respectful of others' time. Thanks for your patience. Ktin (talk) 15:56, 21 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • I have failed this nomination as I do not expect it to be viable to do either of the criteria within the next, say, month. The best shot would be to nominate the article for GA and then once passed immediately repeat this nomination. A fivefold expansion is not viable and article is already made. Observation[edit]

GA review (see here for what the criteria are, and here for what they are not)
  1. It is reasonably well written.
a (prose, spelling, and grammar): b (MoS for lead, layout, word choice, fiction, and lists):

MOS is followed throughout the article. Good written English, easily comprehended.

  1. It is factually accurate and verifiable.
a (reference section): b (citations to reliable sources): c (OR): d (copyvio and plagiarism):

The archive of Reference 7 advises This URL has been excluded from the Wayback Machine.

This is a very old article (started life in 2002). There needs to be a consistent application of the archived URL either before or after the original link; this application should be consistent throughout this article; a number of reversals were encountered.

  1. It is broad in its coverage.
    a (major aspects): b (focused):

Given this is a politician, the article is relatively broad and balanced with respect to his career, departure from politics and return as PM who loses an election. Very balanced, neutral presentation.

  1. It follows the neutral point of view policy.
    Fair representation without bias:

The challenge of covering a politician, Prime Minister and Leader of Opposition is well managed.

  1. It is stable.
    No edit wars, etc.:

699 editors for 1575 edits; this is an old page with the first edit on 22 July 2002.

  1. It is illustrated by images and other media, where possible and appropriate.
a (images are tagged and non-free content have fair use rationales): b (appropriate use with suitable captions):

  • Infobox image is Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 2.0 Generic license.
  • Image of Turner with Trudeau: copyright holder of this work allows anyone to use it for any purpose including unrestricted redistribution, commercial use, and modification.

Overall[edit]

(temp review page) --Whiteguru (talk) 10:23, 26 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Despite this page being quite old (commenced life in 2002), it is still a robust page and does not suffer from WP:PROSELINE (he did this, he did that, ad-nauseam).

There are a lot of page watchers and mischievous edits are reverted quickly. A good article, well maintained. --Whiteguru (talk) 11:42, 26 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
