Richmond[edit]

DuBois also lived and served Catholics in Richmond, Virginia. Unfortunately, I am away from that state and cannot consult Gerard Fogarty's book, Commonwealth Catholics, which might even say that duBois was consecrated a bishop for Richmond, but moved the new diocese to Bardstown, Kentucky, where many Catholics (and Baptists, etc.) fled seeking freedom to practice their faiths (as well as to make fortunes). Although clergy of many faiths gave Fr. DuBois a big send-off, and he was even honored by being allowed to act as chaplain to the legislature for a day, the cause may have been rampant anti-Catholicism in the boom town, probably led by Spencer Roane, by then a Justice of what later became the Virginia Supreme Court. Fogarty mentions litigation involving the will of Peter Gallego, a wealthy merchant whose flour mills shipped processed Virginia grain to Brazil, but the actual records may have been destroyed when Confederate forces burned Richmond as they abandoned their capital at the close of the Civil War.Jweaver28 (talk) 11:47, 26 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Question[edit]

The lede states that Dubois was "the first Ordinary to reside in the diocese..." ,yet his predecessor John Connolly OP arrived in 1815; and according to Dominican historian Victor F. O'Daniel was known for "traversing the city on foot" to tend the poor and sick. Mannanan51 (talk) 23:48, 6 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
