Russian descent[edit]

Ms Leigh's Russian Heritage is said to be an influence on her thinking. The Nation that gave us Tolstoy. Dostoevsky, Tchekhov, also gave us Jenifer Jason Leigh.Johnwrd (talk) 01:31, 23 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Is said by whom?   Will Beback  talk  01:59, 23 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It has been mentioned in a number of publications. You only have to watch her interviews to see she is a cultured and knowledgeable person.Johnwrd (talk) 03:07, 24 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Well, since this is Wikipedia we'd need a specific verifiable source for any assertion. If you find a publication which address the influence of her Russian heritage then feel free to add something about it.   Will Beback  talk  04:23, 24 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This is a Final Comment from me to your question. You are entirely correct in pointing out Ms Leigh is not influenced by her Russian heritage in any way as far as her movies are concerned. And I unreservedly withdraw the comment. The mistaken suggestion that her heritage has any influence on her work appear es to spring from a repeated statement that Ms Leigh is of Russian descent on Web pages about her. (A fact that is irrelevant in the context of her Movies). It is a helpful correction you have made, and anyone using search engines with such trivia noted about Ms Leigh in future will hopefully benefit from the trouble you have taken to correct the misunderstanding. A question you may pursue in future is why such an irrelevant detail is noted at all in the Bio of a young American born in Los Angeles. It may be helpful to people interested in Ms Leigh's work if Wikipedia leave the exchange between us on this page to stop this misconception you have corrected from being continued on the Internet. Johnwrd (talk) 07:50, 25 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The same nation gave us Stanislavski so there's nothing extraordinary about supposing that Leigh, if she's of Russian descent, might have a genetic predisposition towards acting. Or maybe it was just something in the water. Or it might just be hard work and talent. Whichever way, we can summarize what we find in reliable sources.   Will Beback  talk  08:06, 25 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The article said she received her SAG membership related to her first part, a small role in Baretta, at the age of 16. This was clearly gotten from a blurb in IMDb and then cloned everywhere on the web. I'm not sure why her SAG membership is even noteworthy, but I left that part in. However, I changed her age. According to IMDb and, of course, the Wiki article itself, she was born on Feb. 5, 1962. Also according to IMDb, the Baretta episode aired on 1/26/77, meaning Leigh would have been 15 a week later. I don't know how reliable IMDb trivia is, but generally IMDb air dates, casts, etc., are considered very reliable. Assuming her birth date is really 2/5/62 (and who knows about that?), the 16 isn't even close. I may try to do a little more research on this issue through newspaper accounts, but I'm not sure how far I'll get.--Bbb23 (talk) 14:36, 13 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Personal life[edit]

Perhaps it may be worth noting the value Ms leigh places on her Privacy. Like Ms Jodie Foster she seems a reclusive person when not working. During an Interview with Silvia Gold in the New York Times, Ms Leigh commented on her preference for privacy; 'There has to be something that is yours, that you are not promoting'.Johnwrd (talk) 10:07, 22 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Can anyone post a picture of Jennifer Jason Leigh on this page?Sthuylon (talk) 02:30, 5 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Lack of sources[edit]

This article hasn't had any worthwhile sources for five years now. I'll do some google searches to see if I can substantiate some of the claims made, but, if I can't, I plan on removing all of the ridiculous "she purportedly said" and "she is alleged to have done" statements.

I should be able to find sources for the obvious stuff, like awards, movie reviews, and acclaim, but I think a lot of this is just going to have to be removed. As far as I can tell, much of this article is based on IMDb rumors and trivia. NinjaRobotPirate (talk) 17:16, 20 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I followed through and more than doubled the number of sources in the article. Accordingly, I removed the BLPSources template. There are a few things that still bother me about the article, so I tagged them appropriately. Frustratingly, there are extremely few resources on Wikipedia about how articles are supposed to look. I opened up a bunch of tabs of featured/good articles, but they were all completely different! I eventually gave up and settled on fixing the most egregious problem – providing sources. I left in a few unsourced statements that seemed harmless enough, since they provided anecdotes, and my own research wasn't turning up many anecdotes. I also removed a lot of peacock terms and original research. In some places, that messed up the flow of the paragraphs, but I was getting tired of editing. I fixed it up as best I could, but some of these paragraphs are a bit iffy and need to be reworked. I would have liked to have rewritten many parts of this article from scratch, but it would be too contentious, and I wasn't sure how much detail to include. Feedback on this issue, especially, would be helpful. NinjaRobotPirate (talk) 22:10, 22 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ninja, with respect you can't blame Wiki for this. It would seem Ms Leigh is a private person, there are no biographies of her and the only 'facts' about her life are from interviews Ms Leigh has given. If you want the nearest thing to a bio about Ms Leigh you can find 'Jennifer Jason Leigh' a small book on Amazon Kindle. I have no idea if Ms Leigh approved of this book, but it unlikely Amazon Kindle would have the book for instant download if Ms Leigh found it unexceptable. Very good bio on this actress. Nicely written, informative yet concise, and one of the best here so far. I would like to see more of this kind here, because there are far more famous stars than Jennifer Jason Leigh with weaker/less informative profiles.

Lead section[edit]

Is there any good reason why this shouldn't be cut down to half its current length, or even more? Harfarhs (talk) 21:52, 16 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

"O Brother, Where Art Thou?" (2000.)[edit]

In the end credits, she is in the list of people and organizations thanked. The article doesn't mention it. Does anybody know why she was included in that list? 🤔 LeoStarDragon1 (talk) 12:49, 6 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@LeoStarDragon1: This blog says: "Ed Gale is great as Homer Stokes' little man who is voiced by Jennifer Jason Leigh".--Tajotep (talk) 14:00, 6 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Birth date[edit]

In the early life section it says JJL's parents divorced when she was two. Vic Morrow and Barbara Turner were divorced in 1964. According to that information, wouldn't it be appropriate to add c.1962 to her birth date section? JohnSpinker (talk) 06:03, 18 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

JohnSpinker, I think more documentation is needed to do that. The citation for "Her parents divorced when she was two." is "Stated on Inside the Actors Studio, 1999". That citation in itself is vague, and it raises some questions. Who made that statement? Additionally, did the statement also include the date of the divorce? Until more details with valid citation(s) are available, I would not add even "c. 1962". Eddie Blick (talk) 18:43, 18 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

You know the more I look into this the less sense it makes. In her career section it says the had a role when she was 9 in 1973. Which would place her birth year around 1964 but that's the year her parents divorced. JohnSpinker (talk) 19:08, 18 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

That's a good point, JohnSpinker. Situations like that are all the more reason we need to cite reliable sources when we put information in articles. An error in one place can lead to other errors. Thanks for looking into the question further. Eddie Blick (talk) 20:44, 18 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
