Legislature vote for Senator

It seems like a good idea to inaugurate this talk page with some discussion of Lane receiving the Democratic vote in the legislature for Senate. Now, remember, in 1903, the legislatures still elected Senators. The famed debates between Lincoln and Douglas were to get people to elect Illinois state legislators of their parties. In 1902, Lane lost the gubernatorial election, possibly due to shady activities by the Republicans. The legislature stayed Republican. It didn't matter who the Democrats voted for, for Senate, that person wasn't going to win. So, apparently as a protest, they voted for Lane. If this can be made clearer in the article, while still keeping within the sources, please feel free to do so.--Wehwalt (talk) 17:54, 26 January 2009 (UTC)

You're not the Stuart pretender, are you? It's legit. I have at least one ref that says that he would have been a solid candidate in 1920 had he been US born. Do you think it reads oddly? I can play with the language.--Wehwalt (talk) 03:36, 29 January 2009 (UTC)

OK, I get your point, it is skating close to weasel wording. I saw something that said that if Lane had been eligible he would have been better than Cox in 1920, I'll insert something into the body and modify the lede.--Wehwalt (talk) 03:49, 29 January 2009 (UTC)

Not of itself, I agree, but I'm trying to paint his protrait (not OR, just from the paint by numbers I am given) as the self made man, who worked his way up from little or nothing, saw public service as the highest honor a man could have, served his city and country for twenty years, and wound up with so little money two future presidents had to pull together to form a fund to support his wife.--Wehwalt (talk) 02:35, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

First paragraph: '...died of angina pectoris'. Angina pectoris is a symptom - a pain, usually felt in the chest. By definition it is treatable and reversible. It indicates that someone is at risk of suffering a heart attack. But one cannot 'die' of angina pectoris. Did Lane in fact suffer a heart attack?

I've changed it. There was some difficulty following a heart operation, the sources aren't 100% clear.--Wehwalt (talk) 20:20, 5 November 2009 (UTC)

Graduate or not?

Can't make out whether he graduated from this "From 1884 to 1886, he attended the University of California at Berkeley, though he did not graduate.[2] Lane later wrote, "I put myself through college by working on vacation and after hours, and I am very glad I did it."[6] He later received honorary Doctor of Laws degrees from the University of California, from New York University, Brown University, and the University of North Carolina.[7] After graduation, he worked as a reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle (henceforth Chronicle).[1]" Smallbones (talk) 00:57, 4 November 2009 (UTC)

Good catch. At one point, I thought he graduated. This was brought up in the second FAC and it seems it did not and the source is not incorrect, but misleading. I'll make a change.--Wehwalt (talk) 07:48, 4 November 2009 (UTC)
