Please add Swedish actress Barbro Kollberg. She passed away on March 6, 2014. She was 96. [1] (Swedish) 194.69.14.179 (talk) 08:59, 10 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

"Encyclopedic"[edit]

Too bad we have 500 or so listings a month. I just read Leo Bretholz's article and am itching to add "escaped from a train heading to Auschwitz" (which we all know what would've happened had he stayed) or "escaped seven times during the Holocaust", which I've never heard anyone of doing.

But we must keep it simple, right? — Wyliepedia 09:45, 10 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree. If it fits on the line, then do it. It is his reason for notability. His entire being changed in that moment and the rest of his life was tied to it. I dont care if it doesnt fit on a tablet or smart phone...but then again I get told that I am old and grumpy a lot too. Back in my day, we had to walk uphill both ways in blinding snowstorms every day we went to school. Sunnydoo (talk) 12:23, 10 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Here is another story if you need references...says he spent time telling 1000s of school children about the Holocaust. Also has links to his fight against a French company trying to run Marc Rail. The French company was involved in the Holocaust transporting people to the Camps and later tried to justify its actions just like UBS, et al. [2]Sunnydoo (talk) 12:31, 10 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Gordon Tilsley[edit]

Someone more familiar with the other side of the pond may want to see if he qualifies...OBE and helped found University of East Anglia...Chief town executive for Norwich.[3] Strikes me as a super local, but someone may find some notability to it.Sunnydoo (talk) 13:32, 10 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Seems too local to me --Connelly90 16:33, 10 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
As a Brit, I am of the opinion that he was exclusively local in his notability - Norwich, Norwich and Norwich. But, where does it say that localism is a disbarrment to inclusion here? Plus, if I read the guidelines right, those who have a redlink but might get an article (who knows?) are still eligible for listing on this page. So, if anyone feels strongly that he should be in here, they should go ahead. Unfortunately, I don't. I still err on the side of "too local", alongside my learned friend. Ref (chew)(do) 06:58, 11 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The OBE alone should afford mention here. One headline offers that he "helped change the face of Norwich". Yes, that is mondo local, but so is the random American mayor we list here. I say red link him. — Wyliepedia 07:29, 11 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
An OBE (or any title awarded by the royals) doesn't make a person relevant on it's own. There are loads of dinner ladies and lollipop men (US:crossing guards) who have honours, but they wouldn't be included here. An OBE, MBE etc etc isn't it's own achievement, but a recognition of some good contribution; which can be very, very local. --Connelly90 09:13, 11 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Terry Trafford[edit]

We have had several people put up an entry for him. So I thought I would create a section and explain that Sport Figures have eligibility requirements which can be found at WP:Notability (sports) and then by individual sport. For Hockey it is the following-

Ice hockey players are presumed notable if they

Played one or more games in an existing or defunct top professional league; Played one or more games in an amateur league considered, through lack of a professional league, the highest level of competition extant; Played at least 200 games (90 games for a goaltender) or achieved preeminent honors (all-time top ten career scorer, First Team All-Star) in top-level minor leagues or second tier national leagues; Achieved preeminent honors (all-time top ten career scorer, First Team All-Star, All-American) in a lower minor league, in a major junior league, or in a major collegiate hockey league (Note: merely playing in a major junior league or major collegiate hockey is not enough to satisfy inclusion requirements); Were a first-round draft pick in the NHL Entry Draft; Played on a senior national team (such as at the Olympic Games or World Championship); or Are an honored member of a national or multinational hockey Hall of Fame.

Trafford did not play in a top professional league- he played in Junior hockey. He also did not get 200 games in a top-level minor league as he never played in the AHL, which is the next to highest level in the US and Canada with the NHL of course being the top level. He was not a 1st round pick and never played for the senior Canadian National team in a major International event. And as the note says- merely playing in a major junior league or major collegiate hockey program is not good enough to satisfy the requirement.

His death is tragic and a reminder that we should take care of how we deal with everyone every day in life, but does not meet our notability requirements.Sunnydoo (talk) 05:28, 13 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Weird sites[edit]

The same source for Brian Bonsall (or "Bosnell") may be back for Wayne Knight and Chumlee. Believe nothing. They're watching us. Ebuzzd, TMZ.today, US Magazine and OK Magazine. InedibleHulk (talk) 16:03, 16 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@InedibleHulk: @Taylor Trescott: All this site do is make up death hoax, the death hoax spread, and then they make a story about a death hoax and delete the original. I agre, This should be put on blacklisted refs, they are doing nothing but trouble. Beerest 2 Talk page 16:19, 16 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Not all they do. Did you know they found that missing Malaysian plane in Iraq/Kuwait? It "baffled experts". InedibleHulk (talk) 16:27, 16 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I've proposed them for blacklisting. InedibleHulk (talk) 17:04, 16 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Dokka Umarov[edit]

There seems to be a consensus at his article to discount his death reports till they're more confirmed (or not soon denied). Should we follow suit here? InedibleHulk (talk) 18:17, 20 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Done Yes, see the talk section there. Furthermore, the FAQ in Recent Deaths states that "Material about living persons (or recently deceased) that is unsourced or poorly sourced is removed immediately and without waiting for discussion (WP:BLP)." Burden of proof on verifiability lies with the one who adds information (WP:CHALLENGE). I have deleted the entry accordingly.Finnusertop (talk) 22:27, 26 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Fred Phelps[edit]

Appears to be some dispute over when he died. It seems most sources give 19, but others give 20. What do you think? Taylor Trescott - my talk + my edits 18:27, 20 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

CBC cites his daughter as saying "after midnight Thursday" (March 20). That's good enough for me. No clue which year it was in his head. InedibleHulk (talk) 18:34, 20 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
And Yahoo cites the same daughter as saying "after midnight Wednesday" (March 19). Now I get it. InedibleHulk (talk) 18:39, 20 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
BBC gives 19th. Confusing. Maybe it will clear up after this settles down. Taylor Trescott - my talk + my edits 18:42, 20 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Even more confusing when I saw that CBC and Yahoo were both the exact same AP release, aside from that. Can't seem to find it from any "pure AP" source. InedibleHulk (talk) 18:44, 20 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
This later editorial by the same author references the same daughter, says "late Wednesday". InedibleHulk (talk) 18:47, 20 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Time[edit]

<Sigh> This is exactly why I didnt want to have this discussion. Time probably does not exist, especially given some of the recent advancements in string theory and multiverses particularly the experiments involving neturinos and various other entities reacting in very different geographical places in what humans define as simultaneously.

But lets presume that time exists for the sake of this discussion. Time should have a beginning and an ending in whatever mode you choose- be it hours, days, months or years and it should be a finite term. You should keep this time in the same unit so as not to confuse others.

We seem to be having an issue today with the use of "since." I have never been onboard with this arrangement as it doesnt logically make any sense. Since is a term used to describe a difference- not a unit itself. We have always strived to be exact in our endeavors in describing who a person is and why they are notable. And I dont understand why we dont for a term when the data is there. Theoretically if we wanted to use since for our purposes, why not instead of actual ages we just start putting Since 1938 as an example of birthdates and let the readers figure it out.

But no, for some reason we have some that like to use since blah blah for the end of terms. Instead of saying 1985 to 2014 so that the casual reader can do the math in their head (29 years), we have to put since 1985 assuming that in 2017 one is looking at this and then doing the math backwards. And today we have an ongoing edit war because one editor does not understand that since is a term of difference and if that term is O there cant be a since, there can only be that term. So he is insisting that it is since 2014 even though the guy has been in office the grand sum of only a few weeks.

I just dont get it. I am sure that someone will shoot back with the 2 standard responses: this is the way we have always done it and we just dont like to see the year 2014 posted 15 times a month because of aesthetics, even though it goes against logic and math.

Someone now please cue Pink Floyd.Sunnydoo (talk) 16:41, 22 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I like "since". Lets me know the officeholder didn't just have a short stint in January. But yeah, 2014 - 2014 = not so much. I'd rather leave the "2014" part out altogether, just "since March 14". Part of me has faith that most people read in present context. Fun fact that he only lasted eight days, anyway. Should be noted, especially since we don't have an article for readers. InedibleHulk (talk) 16:54, 22 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Went with "(since March 14)". Cuts out a comma, too. We surely don't have time for those. InedibleHulk (talk) 17:03, 22 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Probably since I deal with numbers all day it makes me crazy, especially when units get mixed. Maybe I am being over anal about the concept of since, but since 2014 in 2014 makes no sense in any discussion. Its like trying to divide by 0. You just cant do it. I like the nice and clean 1985 to 2014 because I can do that quickly without too much thought. Putting the actual date in there at least makes more since and sense instead of using since 2014 for this current example only.Sunnydoo (talk) 17:04, 22 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Crazy numbers, eh? Sum up the contributions since this war erupted at 14:00. 66 bytes. 66 = today times three. Me, you and King Randor (eventually). 66 + 14 = 80 = his username. 80 is/was also probably French for 8 days. Not sure. Also not sure why I'm writing small. This is relevant, for now. Bunch of 8s and 14s around Iwas (I...was?), too. InedibleHulk (talk) 17:13, 22 March 2014 (UTC) [reply]

Please change her death date from 16 to 17. Cite for 17 is [4]. Former cite just stated "she died during night from Sunday to Monday". Thanks, --YAAA (talk) 13:25, 23 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Dave Brockie / Oderus Urungus (GWAR lead singer)[edit]

I thought the rule was that we went with the name on the person's article? The article name in this case is Oderus Urungus with Dave Brokie as a re-direct. In the past this has been the case with pro wrestles, authors, actors etc. BurienBomber (talk) 16:04, 24 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I noticed that, too. Had to click just to make sure it was him. Only a moderate GWAR fan, but that's the first I'd heard that name. Changed it. Not sure how alphabetizing works. Urungus really isn't a "family name". InedibleHulk (talk) 19:24, 24 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Though, wouldn't it be a bit more respectful to the person if we used his real name? Yeah, he was known as Oderus, but his family, band members and even fans knew him as Dave. Rusted AutoParts 19:29, 24 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It kinda sounds like you're saying we aren't respectful in all regards. And it's not like we're bringing them to a different article, they're still going to Oderus's article, but via Dave Brockie's entry. Rusted AutoParts 20:12, 24 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Respect runs fairly hard against our core principles here. First, because we shouldn't be feeling anything about subjects. Leads to bias. Secondly, because different people respect different people for different reasons, it's always a personal opinion on how to "respectfully" relay the facts, and when respect is appropriate (I've always figured the living could better use it).
If we do consider respect here (we are human, aren't we?), I'd say it's more an "honour" to be remembered for one's work. I wouldn't be surprised if this name's on his tombstone. He seemed a proud monster. InedibleHulk (talk) 21:16, 24 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

We need to distinguish here between pseudonyms and characters. Names like John Wayne and Andre the Giant are pseudonyms and, per WP:COMMONNAME, that is how we refer to them here. Oderus Urungus, on the other hand, was a character portrayed by Dave Brockie. According to its article "Oderus Urungus is 43 billion years old". The living thing that died was Dave Brockie, aged 50. If we were going to list the humanoid Oderus Urungus (and we shouldn't), then his age would be 43 billion. WWGB (talk) 22:36, 24 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

For what it's worth, Andre the Giant was a fair bit taller and heavier than Andre Roussimoff, and was retconned into having an undefeated record before WrestleMania 3. Andre the Giant never lost a battle royale, despite Roussimoff often not winning them. There's a tendency for the line between gimmick and man to get blurry after enough years (or beers) in character (especially to the public).
On the other hand, I learned a name today. So the encyclopedia is working. InedibleHulk (talk) 02:20, 25 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Will McKamey[edit]

He was a gridiron football player at Navy (US Naval Academy) who collapsed in practice and passed away today at age 19. Citation here: http://news.yahoo.com/19-old-navy-rb-mckamey-dies-coma-034106516--spt.html

I know he is not particularly famous, but it is rare that a player in major college football passes away while still in college. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.52.207.102 (talkcontribs) 14:11, March 26, 2014 (UTC)

Although DI2014 starts out with "notable deaths", we don't list people because they died so young. All I've seen about McKamey is that he "ran for more than 2,000 yards as a senior at Grace Christian in 2012". I doubt that makes him notable. I'm from his hometown and have seen the news plastered with his death and all the coaches around here speaking highly of him, but Wikipedia is not an obituary. — Wyliepedia 19:35, 26 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough. As a player at Navy he was not notable. Still a tragedy... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.52.207.102 (talk) 19:55, 26 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Correction[edit]

Éva Vezér dies on Friday (28 March). And she died when she was 56 years old. Sources: Elhunyt Vezér Éva (168ora.hu) or Meghalt Vezér Éva (origo.hu) or Elhunyt Vezér Éva (hir24.hu). Apród (talk) 17:36, 1 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Someone added her on March 31, with the additional "death reported" attached, only because it's an English source. The Hungarian ones, however, give the actual date. — Wyliepedia 18:10, 1 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

List should be from 1st forwards to 31st, not 31st backwards to 1st, in archived months. 86.112.67.18 (talk) 22:48, 6 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
