neutrality[edit]

It is not neutral to describe indigenous people undergoing colonization as "pagan", "brutal", "tribal" etc. The context of conversion in Tlaxcala was not peaceful, but very violent. Their death was certainly a sad part of the the violent conversion of the indigenous people of Mexico - but failing to describe the actual context of the events - including indigenous peoples being converted by force and killed for being "pagans" is falsification of history. They may have been canonized but in Wikipedia we are not in the business of writing hagiographies. We write actual history.·maunus · snunɐɯ· 15:21, 18 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Pagan is a distinction used even today, and can be used to describe a polytheistic religion, so no foul there. Also, "brutal" is how one would accurately describe Cristobal's martyrdom, and that would not change if it had been committed by a non-native. Beware sanitizing wrongs committed by the indigenous people of the time, as some wrongs were egregious and not just limited to white conquering forces.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.25.169.64 (talkcontribs)

No "pagan" is not a distinction used today except by people who themselves have a particular religious perspective to refer to peoples from other religions. Wikipedia is not a catholic encyclopedia and therefore it is not appropriate to adopt a catholic perspective in describing non-catholics as "pagans". Yes his murder was brutal, but so was the process of conversion, and it was for example not Cristobal's own choice to leave his family and go live with the friars when he was a child.·maunus · snunɐɯ· 08:04, 1 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I've removed the template as the words that Maunus objected to (namely pagan, brutal, etc.) have since been removed by said user. Unless there is any other outstanding issue in the article I've overlooked I've removed the POV template. Articles about religions and conversions are bound to be controversial to some extent and ruffle a few feathers, the argument that the conversion to Catholicism under Spanish imperialism in Mesoamerica was horrific so this article should reflect this should be done according to Wikipedia's guidelines rather than WP:RIGHTGREATWRONGS.
