Notability[edit]

Can someone please give his opinion on the notability of this chess player ? I mean, being "Candidate Master" is not really notable (tens of thousands of chess players are), his current FIDE rating (1843) is not notable, and the article does not describe his performances in the Chess Olympiads. So is he notable just because he is from Fiji ? SyG 14:12, 30 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

He is the first player from Fiji to attain the rating. He has taken part in a number of international tournaments. His performance has been outstanding in local tournaments. He was voted the National male athlete of 2006. (It is good to know that in Fiji Chess is regarded as a sport). He has been involved in the administration of chess in Fiji. He maintains the official site of the Fiji Chess Federation. (Fiji Chess Federation). I say that is notable; even more so if you are interested in promotong chess in the developing countries. Thanks for these explanations. I do not think the title of "candidate master" is notable, especially as his FIDE rating is really really low. I understand this person is developing chess in its country (maintain the official site, involved in the administration, ...) but that is not notable neither. On the title of "National male athlete" I hesitate: I followed the link in the article and I did not understand the difference between the "2006 Sportsman of the year" award (which was won by a karate athlete) and the "2006 National Make Athlete of the year" award (which was won by Calvin Prasad). Promoting chess in the developing countries is certainly a valuable and graceful goal, but Wikipedia should not be the place to put a political agenda, even a worthy one.
