I think the page has grown enough to warrant a split. Since most of the cases have occurred in the Las Vegas Valley, I think it would make sense to split off certain content from this page into a new one called COVID-19 pandemic in Las Vegas. Content that is specific to the valley would be covered at the new page, while this one would focus on other areas of the state and issues that affect the entire state. If it were split, those two articles would either be incomplete or highly redundant. Las Vegas is 70% of the state's population, so the issues that affect Las Vegas are critical to understanding how the pandemic affects the state as a whole, and the statewide issues of course are fundamental to what's happening in Vegas. To be honest, I think the better path would be to pare down a lot of the content in the Timeline section and reorganize it by theme in a more summary fashion under the Impact section. There are a lot of raw facts taken from day-by-day reporting that may have been important on that particular day, but are not important in the bigger picture. Take it from the perspective of someone reading this article 10 or 20 years from now. Will they care about things like:
Courts in county X enacted social distancing measures on date Y
Rural county X reported its first case on date Y
Testing sites were opened at hotels X, Y, and Z
Press conference on date X was delayed due to technical difficulties
Instead they might want to see answers to key questions, each of which might only take a paragraph or two:
What was the impact on schools and other government services?
What testing and tracing measures did the government take?
What legal controversies arose related to the pandemic?
When and how were various types of businesses required to close and then allowed to reopen?
etc. Anyway, just my two cents as a drive-by commenter who has contributed nothing to the article, take it for what you will. Toohool (talk) 23:05, 30 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I think I would agree with removing or trimming stuff about courthouses, testing sites, etc. Indeed, those things seemed noteworthy to me at the time, and I wasn't sure exactly what kind of content would belong in an article like this. I couldn't find any guidelines for these pandemic-related state articles, so I've simply been adding stuff that seemed important, and no one's objected to those additions. But maybe it's time to re-evaluate some of that stuff.
As this is a statewide article, I think it makes sense for the timeline to include the first cases that occurred in areas outside of Las Vegas. It tells the reader when the virus began to affect other cities. Other than that, I think I would generally agree with removing some of the other stuff, or moving more content into themed sections. I'll wait a few more days to see if other people have any comments before I make any further changes to the article.
My preference has also been to keep this all together in one article, although even with trimming, I wonder if this page could be reduced enough to eliminate the need for a split, considering that this is an ongoing event. AJFU (talk) 14:34, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
