I can tell that proving the PD status of this file wasn't easy. Kudos.

I plan on putting it up for FP at some point, once I can bring the corresponding article to a more acceptable state. Snowmanonahoe (talk · contribs · typos) 17:52, 8 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the appreciative words! Good luck with the article improvement. Toohool (talk) 04:06, 19 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

CSD F8 reversion[edit]

See this Commons DR, where I determined the picture was only published in the US and Canada. I agree on the crop though. Perhaps your version should be uploaded over. Snowmanonahoe (talk · contribs · typos) 18:01, 18 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Snowmanonahoe: I wouldn't put much stock in a Newspapers.com search for that purpose, because their coverage of newspapers outside of the US and Canada is very thin. With such an attention-grabbing photo, my guess would be that it was picked up by some newspapers in other countries.
That said, I think common sense would prevail on Commons and they wouldn't consider the country of origin to be one that has virtually no connection to the work. I think I uploaded that photo before I understood that "country of origin" generally means the country of first publication, so I was concerned that Vietnam could be considered the country of origin. If I were uploading it today, I would probably upload it to Commons.
I wouldn't upload over the existing file on Commons though, since it's a different crop. One could argue that there's no copyright problem with the uncropped version, because the extra parts of the image either don't disclose any additional originality, or are de minimis. Both versions could live side-by-side on Commons, leaving it to editors to decide which is more suitable for use in a particular context. Toohool (talk) 04:06, 19 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I've moved the file over. Thanks for your help. Snowmanonahoe (talk · contribs · typos) 11:38, 19 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
