A lot of references say Burns was Austrian, but this is not true. He was born in a town in Galicia, which is a region encompassing the Polish-Ukranian border (the town is now part of Ukraine). Galicia was part of the Austro-Hungarian empire at the time, but that doesn't make him Austrian. His ethnicity was Jewish and his nationality, for all but the first ten years of his life, was American. -- Chowbok 05:37, 23 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

What kind of referencas can it be? Of course he was Jewish.

POV[edit]

This article takes the monetarist line that expansive monetary policy was responsible for inflation, but Keynesians believe that they're not connected and the inflation was caused by wars and oil shocks. Actually, it doesn't take the monetarist line that monetary policy was responsible for inflation. (If I'm missing something, please quote the passage from the article that suggests otherwise.) The article conveys Burns' view that the Fed should not have tightened monetary policy to quell inflation if the result would have been high unemployment. I agree with Bond Head. I don't see anything in this article that's really either monetarist or Keynesian. Also, I don't think that's particularly correct that any credible "Keynesian" believes that expansive monetary policy is unconnected to the inflation, but this article makes no claim either way.
