Bias?[edit]

The article written is totally biased and one sided. Andry Rajoelina is being painted black. Ravalomanana made the mistake of stepping on his toes.. by closing his TV and radio stations. Andry himself did not expect the public support which he used to his benefit. Name?[edit]

Can someone put IPA or even non-IPA on how to pronounce his name. I have heard media pronounce it as An-drezzle-oh, but that sounds very incorrect. 74.232.43.248 (talk) 02:48, 30 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It's close to (i)Ahndj(y) Rah-dzo'EL. Let me see if I can figure out how to put the IPA in. Malagasy is tricky because pronunciation varies widely (even for the same speaker). There are kind of "optional" sounds for most words. Lemurbaby (talk) 00:05, 17 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The way I originally wrote it, I had the ʲ at the beginning because that's how it's pronounced most of the time in normal speech, but when someone is articulating slowly and clearly then they will drop that sound at the beginning and just start with /a/. I also had the final vowel sounds in superscript which still seems right to me because they're largely elided. Photo to change[edit]

The photo in the infobox does not comply with Wikipedia's standards of neutrality (NPOV). Obviously, the page has been the target of Rajoelina's detractors, and the photo perfectly illustrates this situation. I understand that this photo is convenient because it's in the public domain since its owner is the:

"work of a United States Department of State employee, taken or made during the course of an employee's official duties. As a work of the U.S. federal government, the image is in the public domain per 17 U.S.C. § 101 and § 105 and the Department Copyright Information" [1].

Since this photo is of very low quality, the person is not facing the camera, and his face expressions are NOT his day-to-day facial expressions, I found a far better picture of him, exactly where the first one is located, with the same public domain rights. The photo was found on this document[1], which is a press release of some sort from the Madagascar US Ambassy. This official and public press release, which content was created by the US Embassy of Madagascar, contains another photo of Rajoelina, which is much better than the existing one. Comparison:

As you can tell on this before/after demonstration, I think we can all agree that the second picture is by far the most neutral picture of him. I agree that this is not the best pic ever, but it's much better than the first one, and they hold the exact same public domain rights. Replacement.

Deep changes[edit]

Hi,

Since 2009, a lot of things have changed, and I think it is about time to update this page with fresher info, and maybe less anti-Rajoelina spirit. I am going through a series of changes on this page, and would appreciate your feedbacks about the new elements I bring on the table. Here they are:

  • Rajoelina was Mayor of Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar, from December 2007 to February 2009.[4] Throughout his tenure as mayor, Rajoelina voiced strong opposition to the policies and practices of President Ravalomanana, culminating in the launching of popular protests that, together with military intervention, resulted in the end of Ravalomanana's presidency and Rajoelina's own assumption of power as President of the High Transitional Authority (HAT). -> belongs to Political career

Pfff, that's a lot of biased, distorted, or simply false content thrown out the window. I think we can safely say that this page was once assaulted by Rajoelina's detractors, but as the smoke clears, the POV values of Wikipedia re-rises from the dead !

All in all this is a well written and engaging article, so well done on that!

Here are a few comments:

  • Lead:
    1. Before entering the political arena, Rajoelina launched several successful enterprises, most notably including a printing and advertising company called Injet in 1999 and the Viva radio and television networks in 2007
      Two things, (i) "most notably" and "including" don't sound quite right together - they both imply a subset of the total so I think you only need one of them there; (ii) "most notably" could be a weasel term; by what criteria have you deemed the examples given to be notable?

  • Media entrepreneur:
    1. The first few sentences of the third paragraph of "Media entrepreneur" (those concerned with his marriage and family) don't really have anything to do with his career as a media entrepreneur, which struck me as slightly odd. Not sure if it merits a section on its own? (some other biographies do this, even when the section is quite short). However, looking again I see the paragraph then goes on to say how his wife's family supported his businesses. This structure did strike me as slightly odd though so maybe something to think about.
  • I tried moving the discussion about his wife into the "early life" section since they met when she was still in high school. Let me know what you think. If it doesn't work, I'll split it off into its own short section at the end of "early life". Lemurbaby (talk) 10:08, 2 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

In the first paragraph of the "Confrontation with Ravalomanana" subsection we are introduced to the promised "Democracy Place", however it is then brought up again (with French translation) in the second paragraph in a style suggesting we've never heard of it before. Might it be better to put the French translation against the first mention and then somehow be clear that the second is just a manifestation of the promise of the first. Or something.

      These two aspects of his presidency (the swearing in ceremony and his international legitimacy) struck me as slightly unrelated to each other. Leaders without international recognition are often sworn in under domestic ceremonies and the ceremony itself is unlikely to confer or deny him any extra recognition.
    1. ...continue to withhold recognition of Rajoelina's legitimacy then in the next sentence The United States [...] also refused to acknowledge the Rajoelina administration
      There is a difference in tense here and I'm wondering if that is significant. Has the U.S. since acknowledged the administration? The article doesn't say, if so.

    1. This BBC article here: [2] states that "In November 2011, a unity government was formed with the reluctant cooperation of Madagascar's two main opposition groups". There is no mention of that in the article as far as I could see.

It appears to come from Rajoelina's own website but it's not clear if it's in the public domain. (I couldn't follow the link to "mentions legales" due to it being branded a security risk where I'm located, so couldn't see what's contained there!)
  • Yes, there's a notice at the bottom of the webpage that explicitly states all images on the site are in the public domain and can be reproduced and redistributed. Good article reassessment[edit]

This article is now outdated and needs work. Since 2014, there have been very few updates, and those that do lack detail. The 2018 election and some developments during 2020 COVID do not encompass his now almost three years of Presidency. Older sections are also outdated and are inconsistent with information in 2009 Malagasy political crisis. I am no Madagascar expert so am not well placed to improve much of this myself. Another GAR nomination. This article was made a GA in 2013. However, this needs to be reassessed because it fails the broadness required for a GA. Andry is now president of Madagascar and has been for 4 years now. But, the article has rarely covered much of it in the presidency section.
