Season Start

Tv ratings

I think we should have a ratings area somewhere in the article do you all agree to this? (I am thinking nationally televised games to reduce the possibilities because national games are always higher than local ones) Hoopstercat (talk) 15:40, 16 October 2022 (UTC)

I'm very hesitant about doing this for the regular season unless we can also get a good source for national Canadian TV ratings. Otherwise there may be a perception of US-bias or undue weight with the figures skewed to one side. Historically, national US TV ratings for the NHL regular season are very poor among the four major sports leagues, especially when most national games are on cable, and only a relatively handful of them are on a broadcast television network, ABC. Meanwhile, the weekly Saturday Hockey Night in Canada doubleheader ratings on CBC Television that air throughout the entire regular season tend to be much higher north of the border. There are seven Canadian teams, appearing on these weekly games on Canadian broadcast television. And there are significant rivalries like Canadiens–Maple Leafs, the Battle of Ontario, and the Battle of Alberta that are not fairly captured by US TV ratings. And these same US TV ratings only capture half of the viewership of Bruins–Canadiens and the other significant cross-border rivalries. You have several games that are broadcast nationally on one side of the border, but locally on the other side of the border. And also the handful of games broadcast nationally across both countries. So without these Canadian TV ratings, I'm concerned about the WP:POV implications and how it could give the false impression of just how popular the league is across both countries. By only listing the most watched nationally televised games in the US, it will just turn out to be a list of the most watched NHL on ABC games by the end of the regular season. It will be just primarily be a list of most watched US cable regular season games that start 8pm ET or earlier, involving two American teams. Any game on ESPN or TNT that involves a Canadian team does not generate good US ratings because Canadian viewers are not captured. Any Western Conference game that is part of a doubleheader that starts after 9:30 ET generally does not generate good US ratings. This is not the NFL or NCAA college football where most teams attract a nationwide audience in the states during the regular season. Meanwhile north of the border, because Montreal in a bilingual city, Montreal Canadiens fans there are split between watching the Hockey Night in Canada telecast in English and the French-language coverage on TVA Sports. Postseason games also have their challenges. In the first round, like the NBA, most games broadcast nationally are non-exclusive, meaning that the regional sports networks can also produce separate telecasts of their local team's games -- thus the overall ratings are fractured between those watching the national feeds on ESPN or TNT, and those watching the local feeds on the RSNs (and most fans of a particular team usually prefer the local feeds than the national ones). Then it remains to be seen how many playoff games will air on broadcast network ABC this upcoming postseason compared with those only on cable -- during the 2022 playoffs, ABC only aired the Stanley Cup Finals, but in 2023 the Finals will only air on cable on TNT. And then you have many people along the border like in the Detroit–Windsor area or in the Pacific Northwest, for examples, that would probably prefer to pick up the Canadian CBC broadcast feed over-the-air on CBET-DT or CBUT-DT, respectively, than watch the game on cable on ESPN or TNT.

As for notable games, I mentioned the problem with this on Talk:2022 NFL season#Game ratings: we need some objective criteria that is verifiable by some previously published information on what counts as notable, not a list of games subjectively picked by one or more Wikipedia editors, or else there may be edit wars or disputes on what to include. I assume such a list would instead be put on the 2023 Stanley Cup playoffs page, once we are in May when the second around is underway, not here on this page. Keep in mind, that page would generally get more pageviews in May, and possibly more comments, than today in late October when the early part of the NHL season has to compete for attention with the NFL and MLB playoffs. Points scoring leaders

We include only the top '10', unless the #10 spot has more then one player with an equal amount of 'goals' & 'assists'. Therefore since Nathan MacKinnon has 'less' goals, then Zuccarello? He doesn't belong on the list. GoodDay (talk) 19:34, 26 October 2022 (UTC)

I agree with this. I don't think that the scoring/goalie leaders should have sortable columns... They only sort the ones listed in the top 10 (of points or GAA), so it is inaccurate when you do any other category... Well I see that my change was reverted and Sabbatino said that we needed a "consensus" to make this change... Right now, this looks like it is 2-0 to remove the sortable to make the data 100% accurate, if I am reading what GoodDay said as a vote in removing it.... If their vote is to change it, how long do we have to wait to remove it or what vote results? @Eposty: GoodDay did not write anything about removing the "sortable" parameter. Where did you get that from? In addition, a consensus is needed since this change would affect many pages and the best place for that would be at WT:NHL (or at least a notification there about this discussion). – Sabbatino 18:28, 30 December 2022 (UTC)

Stating that he doesn't belong on the list made me think that they didn't like the inaccurate information as well, so if I was incorrect, I am sorry for misreading it... Either way, I am pretty sure I will get shot down, so I guess I will just let the inaccurate data live... I understand that, but there are players not listed in the top 10 of goals scored because they aren't in the top 10 point leaders. For example, sort by goals scored, where is Bo Horvat's 26 goals? How about Alex Ovechkin and Mark Scheifele 23 goals? Just because they don't make the top 10 in points scored, they should be omitted? posty (talk) 19:04, 30 December 2022 (UTC)

You seem to not understand that most points is what counts towards winning the Art Ross Trophy. And the section is quite clearly named "Scoring leaders" (not "Goals leaders" or "Assists leaders")... – Sabbatino 19:10, 30 December 2022 (UTC)

Linking players

If a player has a certain name on the top of an article and a different name on the top of the infobox, what name would you use? For example: the player Max Comtois, the article lists him as Max Comtois at the top of the page but on top of the infobox at the side, it lists him as Maxime Comtois. Milestones section

Give the changes a chance, as mentioned in the edit content, "Having "on" to begin every sentence looked silly. You don't need to keep putting 2022 after the first instance. When the first instance of 2023 occurs, that will get the date. And using the long dash is nice."

Player deaths

Would there be any objections to including a section for former players having passed away? As it doesn't seem that ice hockey has separate year pages such as 2023 in association football, which includes a section commemorating lost players, I've been wanting to find an appropriate location to include a section such as that. Hockey References has lists that includes players having passed in a given year we could refer to. I find it would be nice to incorporate a section such as this to note passed away players and pay tribute. Pages for film, music, science all do similar. Rusted AutoParts 19:31, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
