Figure skating question[edit]
Hey everyone, I think this is a marvelous project; it hasn't even been a month into 2020, and the results have already been impressive. Nice work, and thanks to User:Rosiestep for coming up with it. For the last year-and-a-half, I've been improving figure skating articles. One of them is Tara Lipinski, which I just added to the outcomes list. Figure skating, as I'm sure most of you already know, is a female-dominated sport; I suspect that's why most articles about the sport (especially the ones about female skaters) have been so neglected and of lower quality. So here's my question: would articles about figure skating (elements like jumps, spins, etc., for example), be within the purview of this project? Personally, I think it could. - @Figureskatingfan: You might be interested to here that there are quite a lot of women figure skater medallist that are missing articles. I added them at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Women_in_Red/Sports_Notability#Figure_Skating. One part I didn't add were the Ice dancing medallists at the World Junior Figure Skating Championships because the criteria said only skaters in the free skate were presumed notable, not free dance. Do you think women ice dancing medallists should also be made for this particular championship? --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 20:08, 9 April 2020 (UTC)
- @MrLinkinPark333: Thanks, what great work you're doing. Yes, go ahead and add the ice dancers. See, ice dance doesn't have a free skate. It (currently) has two competition segments, the Rhythm dance and the Free dance (ice dance). The FD, like the FS, is the longest segment and happens second, after the RD. A question on inclusion in this women+sports edit-a-thon? What do people think about men who have significant contributions to women's sport e.g. Ben Sawyer (an article I am thinking of creating) is a cricket coach for exclusively women's teams (Australia, Birmingham Phoenix women, New South Wales Breakers, Sydney Sixers (WBBL)), and therefore is a contributor to women's sport. Wondering what people thought about whether it would be appropriate to add him to the list of articles created for Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Meetup/151 or not (once I create the article of course)? - Joseph2302 I have written several articles about men who were impactful in women's lives, i.e. politicians who supported suffrage, men who created women's schools, etc. We fall on the side of inclusion, so feel free to add them. SusunW (talk) 21:58, 22 July 2020 (UTC)
Languages[edit]
Why are there some entries that are in Chinese, Japanese, Russian etc.? Can you automatically translate them or not? SarahTHunter (talk) 13:56, 22 July 2020 (UTC)
- @SarahTHunter: Because Wikidata does not have an English language label for the item from which the entry in our Redlist tables is drawn and, very probably has only a Chinese label. (In truth, I don't know how Listeria selects labels in the absence of an EN label, where there are multiple other language labels). We cannot translate them on the fly; they'll change to English if & when someone adds an EN label to the wikidata item. --Tagishsimon (talk) 21:34, 22 July 2020 (UTC)
Women's Ice Hockey[edit]
Hi everyone, I posted this in the main Women in Red page but its probably better off here. The Women's Sports task team on Women's Ice Hockey is looking for help editing pages related to women's ice hockey. We'd love some help, if anyone would like to pitch in. A proposed list of projects is listed on the task team's talk page. A current AfD discussion is going on for Morgan Beikirch and a debate is ongoing regarding including women's hockey in the notability guidelines for hockey. WP:NHOCKEY Participation of other people in the discussion would be welcome; there are many comments coming from the editors who are opposed to including women's hockey in the guidelines.
