I would like other opinions on the value of these links. All are part of the triond.com network (ie: an account with Triond.com allows a user to upload a story to any of these sites).

I found this network of sites when reviewing the IP's spamming of some of the links onto multiple articles. The network allows anyone to self-publish material, with no editorial oversight. Some of the articles appear to have decent research - but the authors are unknown, and most appear to be using these sites as a back-door to publish material that would fail WP:NOR if posted directly to Wikipedia. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 05:16, 1 December 2009 (UTC)

From triond.com/info/how-it-works :
"Triond helps showcase your content so your work gets maximum readership and you earn recognition. FWIW, Live and Unsigned should be remain, there are a large handful of sources covering it. It's possible G11 now, but in the long run just needs work to clean it up. So this isn't a simple blacklistable link. tedder (talk) 13:22, 1 December 2009 (UTC)
Make it thrice, I deleted it, if notable enough, please rewrite it from scratch. If there is too much spam, the domain can always be blacklisted, with a whitelist entry for e.g. the about.htm or index.htm. --Dirk Beetstra T C 13:29, 1 December 2009 (UTC)

mapzones.org

Worldenc (talk · contribs · logs) has been adding this link along with census.gov links to demographic related edits (over 3,000 of them; bot-assisted, perhaps?). While the information the user has been adding is quite useful, I'm concerned about the need for including the mapzones.org link, which is a barebones scraper site based in India. I seem to recall spammers adding similar aggregation sites in the past. The site currently does not have any adverts, but that could change at any time. I posted a notice on Worldenc's page asking about the necessity of the mapzones link; wanted to post a notice here in case this site raises a red flag with anyone else. OhNoitsJamie Talk 15:20, 28 November 2009 (UTC)

Certainly looks familiar. Same type of scraper site spamming as this askgeo.org Spam case. Also has the same degree of spamming images on commons. Domain was Created On:20-Oct-2009 (10 days after the askgeo was blocked), so would indicate the Links were mainly added and are intended to promote this website. Users first contib is also correlated to the domain creation. See External link spamming. I'm reverting.. Looks like a duck to me--Hu12 (talk) 16:48, 28 November 2009 (UTC)

I have taken some data from this site, which are not available from official site (census site), though data were available but in diferent format (in database format), so user can't verify it, and chart concept were taken from this site, so i will add both website as source. Worldenc (talk) 15:46, 28 November 2009 (UTC)

Comment. Not only is this a case of spamming Wikipedia with links to a commercial site, but the charts themselves are in fact NOT useful. They violate many of the fundamental principles of Information graphics. Specifically:

  • The charts are meaningless unless you can read the labels and legends, but the labels and legends are too small to read at a reasonable thumbnail scale.
  • Bar charts (in which bars should be proportional to the size of the value represented to allow visual comparison) misleadingly start at non-zero values.
  • Population pyramids, which are a standardized and effective method for visually displaying the age and sex distribution of population (and which are available at Commons), have been replaced by pie charts, which are not generally useful for visual display (see my comments at User talk:Worldenc#More issues with graphs) and that illustrate only a small fraction of the information in the data sets.
  • Annual population estimates for the period 2000 to 2008 are misrepresented as data (some annual fluctuations in these series are mistakes that were later corrected). --Orlady (talk) 18:07, 28 November 2009 (UTC)
Cleaned up alot of these, however there are still 1,340 remaining, which need cleaning. I've also informed the Commons:Administrators' noticeboard. --Hu12 (talk) 21:26, 28 November 2009 (UTC)
I've looked at some of the user's most recent image uploads on Commons, and they source the US census bureau. The county and federal comparisons are both on the source link given, but the state level isn't. I dislike the idea that this discussion is broken up among so many places, but I've commented on Commons that these images should not be deleted at this point. Killiondude (talk) 21:32, 28 November 2009 (UTC)
As someone who works almost exclusively on geographic articles (counties, municipalities etc) I find these table/charts annoying and slapped on very haphazardly onto articles. Demographic sections tend to be one of the shorter sections in an article and to slap on three charts (the most common number I've seen personally) tends to crowd and distort things, especially if other things are put there as well (such as historic population tables as well), they can crowd the prose and cause large white spaces with the next section below. Some of the charts are useless, such as a population chart showing population of every year for the last decade on a county that has barely changed population in each year (adds no encyclopedic content). I'd like these spammers to learn "Camelbinky's rule #1- if you dont know about an article, dont mess with it, leave it to those who are know about the subject". I dont care if they exist at Commons, and if someone wants to incorporate certain ones on to an article they work on, sure but they shouldnt be spammed wholesale onto every geo article that exists.Camelbinky (talk) 22:39, 28 November 2009 (UTC)
I found them useless and annoying as well. I've removed all of them from Alabama-related articles. All but one county had the mapzones ref. Altairisfartalk 23:15, 28 November 2009 (UTC)
I find them useful. Not perfect of course; like everything in Wikipedia, they have room for improvement. And if I believed in Camelbinky's rule #1, I'd never do much of anything around here. --Stepheng3 (talk) 23:42, 28 November 2009 (UTC)
As much as I like charts, I don't feel comfortable relying on charts generated from generic scraper sites, especially given that we've had an ongoing problem with this kind of "sneaky reference spam." mapzones.org is hosted on the same IP as a few other domains that have been sneakily spammed here. I noticed on the Commons thread that there are 25k+ (!) images linking to mapzones.org. I have to think this is the work of an unapproved bot. We'll probably need to use a bot to clean up the mess here. OhNoitsJamie Talk 23:48, 28 November 2009 (UTC)
Not all of them are sourced to the spam site. The most recently created images source the US census bureau, as I stated above. Whatever, I give up on trying to save these images. Wikipedia has again stifled another user's additions (even while the still might have been misguided). Killiondude (talk) 00:04, 29 November 2009 (UTC)
You seem to be the soul of tolerance, Killiondude. I, for one, am disinclined to politely tolerate (on the grounds of assuming good faith) garbage additions that make a mess of Wikipedia AND are demonstrated to be here for promotional purposes. --Orlady (talk) 00:34, 29 November 2009 (UTC)
Extended content

For the sake of argument lets assume they can be cleaned up and sourced to the US census data and therefore not promote a website.

  • Are they still of encyclopedic use?
  • Is it right for a bot or well-intentioned users to go around and slap them on every settlement article around? Shouldnt it be the right of those that work on those particular articles to decide on a case by case basis which tables should be in each article?
  • As I mentioned they are getting put in the articles in a disruptive manner and many articles dont need them. I dont see why they cant just exist at Commons and if an editor working at a certain article deems a table useful he/she can bring it on over. But spamming massive numbers of articles is outrageous. (And I stand by Camelbinky's Rule #1, if you have no knowledge about an article, there is no information you could possibly add; anyone who disagrees can feel free to make a page off my user page User:Camelbinky/is stupid and we can have a civil discussion about it) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Camelbinky (talkcontribs) 03:08, 29 November 2009
I have created wiki account few days ago (Registration time: 12:03, 18 October 2009), after creating account, upload chart at commons and get some feedback (some problam in chart), i completely follow that instruction and create new chart and reupload it. then add in wikipedia article, from that i also get some positive and some nagative feedback including Orlady, i also follow that and reupload all chart (bar chart which start zero, etc...), yesterday i got message from OhNoitsJamie that why you add mapzones.org link in article, i reply on my talk page and here also (just see my erlier comment above), without any more discussion Hu12 reverting all my work (not even discuss with me about this). I want to give some answer of few question which related this discussion.
Why i am adding mapzones.org link in article??
I have taken some data from this site, which are not available from official site (census site), though data were available but in diferent format (in database format), so user can't verify it, and chart concept were taken from this site, so i will add both website as source.
is this all contributions oprated by bot??
no i have add this chart manually (for each and every article)
How does one claim as "own work", yet link to gov site? (this question asked Hu12 at commons [1]
Yes this is my work, i used data from census site but chart were created by me so its my own work, i mentioned that this is census data even in image (chart).
is mapzones.org is spam site???
i'm not exactly sure, i see WP:external link guide and not found that anything wrong in this site, but you (all above editor) have more experience than me so if you think this is spam site then just tell me that this site is not appropriate for adding in wikipedia, then i don't add it.

If you think my work is not appropriate for encyclopedia then i don't edit article or create image (graph), my commons account were block, so you may block my wikipedia account also. Worldenc (talk) 04:10, 29 November 2009 (UTC)

If the information is sourced from reliable sources (as census.gov is one), I don't see why the graphs, like other user created content from reliable sources, shouldn't be sufficient to be included in an appropriate location in an article. Granted, the graphs may need improvement for clarity, but that is something that can be done later. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 06:23, 29 November 2009 (UTC)
I think Hu12 (and some other editors) has some doubt that i am promoting mapzones.org or i am affiliated with that sites, at this point i'm assumed that i am affiliated (or promoting) with this site, so what i got??
i create more better graph then mapzones.org (thanks for other editor who help me to do graph more and more better) (work negative for mapzones.org)
give this to wikipedia with licencing cc-by-sa-3.0, means everyone can use it even for commercial (work highly negative for mapzones.org)
in wikipedia link is no follow so its not help in search engine (for ranking etc..)(no plus or minus for mapzones.org)
i have added this graph for even tiny settlement which of them even not getting single (1) visitor per days and even article get 1000 hits per day its very little chance to transfer single (1) visitor to mapzones.org (work little positive for mapzones.org)
because of this chart wikipedia get more visitor then mapzones.org, because wikipedia has better search ranking then mapzones.org or any other websites. so user who looking for this chart or related information visit wikipedia not mapzones.org, if i am not add this chart in wikipedia they may be visit mapzones.org (work highly negative for mapzones.org)

so above all fector (and others) my conclusion is that mapzones.org got negative effect from my work.

Few other things which i want to say some editor

@OhNoitsJamie, If some site used official data that doen't means that this website is not useful??? even wikipedia is also used official data for article, so it means that other websites doesn't link wikipedia for refence or source???, even if i am asumed that mapzones.org run adds later doesn't mean this is spam site and wiki external link says that its not problam if sites run adds.

@Orlady, I have updated bar chart for population and now its start from zero (0), other thing all article in wikipedia (for us county and us cities) used estimated population from census, like White_County,_Georgia which show that 'The 2007 Census Estimate shows a population of 25,020', so its not problam to used graph for estimated data from census sites. i don't have problam with pyramid age chart but pie chart also represent very well for age chart (aging)

@Hu12, If you found that site which i added is not appropriate, just give messege at my talk page i will deleted, though i follow all wikipedia guidelines for adding external link, you delete my all work without communicate with me??? is this follow wiki guidelines?????

@Camelbinky, many editor like this chart and happy to add in article, few of them say about my chart (or my work)

  • Nyttend say me : These charts are a great idea! see this
  • Grey_Wanderer say me : I've noticed your awesome work making demographic charts for counties in Missouri. I'm currently working on trying to get the Columbia, Missouri article from GA to FA status. If you have the time, would you be able to make the same demographic charts for that page? this editor give me The Graphic Designer's Barnstar
  • Westonjoe [see this]

@AllOtherEditor, thank you all other editor who help me and contributions your work for wikipedia which help worlds, i am also trying same but i think my work not help to others, so i decide that not to work for wikipedia for any project, have nice day and best luck for future.

Worldenc (talk) 07:39, 29 November 2009 (UTC)

Evidence

mapzones.org is askgeo.org
  • I'll start with "Bakersville Town, North Carolina". This is Google's cache of http://www.askgeo.org/Bakersville_Town_North_Carolina.html. Now have a look at "www.mapzones.org/Bakersville_Town_North_Carolina.html". Same/identical content
  • Lets look at "mapzones.org/search.php". Why does it have the text "AskGeo have cities from..." Must have forgot to edit or remove some code when Worldenc (talk · contribs) transfered to the new domain. (see image to the right)
  • Lets view an older upload at commons for Alamosa County Colorado School Enrollment.png. This was uploaded by one of the multitude of sock puppets used to spam wikipedia and its various projects. Now lets have look at "mapzones.org/images/united_states/colorado/Alamosa_County_Colorado_School_Enrollment.png". Same graph/data/image. Another example, This is the same graph as "www.mapzones.org/images/united_states/colorado/Alamosa_County_Colorado_Population.png".
  • Here are some accounts remaining from the askgeo spam case;
All the graphs/charts/images are Identical to the ones on mapzones.org. Worldenc (talk · contribs) even removed several askgeo links from some of those uploads using sockpuppet Bmaohago account (about the same time askgeo.org was "parked").
Worldenc (talk · contribs) simply moved the domain and content from askgeo.org to mapzones.org, and continued spamming/uploading with yet another sockpuppet account.--Hu12 (talk) 09:44, 29 November 2009 (UTC)
That's pretty convincing evidence. Now the question is can we purpose a bot to help cleanup the mess or will we have to do it manually? I started deleting the mapzone links themselves, but then stopped when I realized we should probably be deleting the images too (as it's likely they'll be deleted from Commons). OhNoitsJamie Talk 15:41, 29 November 2009 (UTC)
I'm also convinced. Additionally, onsamehost.com identifies the following domains on the same host as mapzones.org:
  • askyp.com
  • a2zcity.com
  • asklocalpages.com
  • a2zyp.com
  • ask4geo.com
  • askwp.com
I notice a great similarity between those domain names and "askgeo.org".
If these images are going to be deleted from Commons, once they are deleted from Commons, wouldn't it be pretty easy to instruct a bot to delete them here? --Orlady (talk) 16:15, 29 November 2009 (UTC)
The problem with the first attempt was (speaking for Commons and the commons:Commons:Requests for checkuser/Case/Usgeowiki), the abuse of multiple accounts and the massive spam. That Worldenc is a second attempt was clear from the first second, I reported it minutes after the first batch upload. However, from User talk:Worldenc it seems like some User here appreciate the work and the addition of data and bot created text to the county articles. The external links are pure spam, besides all argumentation by Worldenc. Creating a large number of links to his website generates profile and value for his website, value he wants to monetize I suppose. The text is licensed according to Wikipedia requirements while posting it, I would say the graphs are ineligible for copyright and otherwise freely licensed with Attribution requirement "Worldenc". What's I'm driving at: There is no need to accept the spam links, there are neither copyright nor Wikipedia:Verifiability reasons to keep them. Given that the work of upload was almost done I think it would have been a better idea to talk if this kind of robot created content is wanted or not and to remove all the external links but to keep the content. The now taken action of removal of >25000 uploaded files (log extract) is not the preferred way I think. @Hu12: Thanks for the sockpuppet report, Ill remove this askgeo remaining. --Martin H. (talk) 17:03, 29 November 2009 (UTC)
Ive blocked Worldenc (talk · contribs) on en.Wikipedia for Abusing multiple accounts, follows commons:Commons:Requests for checkuser/Case/Usgeowiki. Per evidence here and here and in the Commons spam case--Hu12 (talk) 19:01, 29 November 2009 (UTC)
Thanks Hu12. You're doing a great job. Sole Soul (talk) 22:44, 29 November 2009 (UTC)
  • I am starting to work on deleting the files over at commons, though I think this is going to take a while. Tiptoety talk 22:06, 30 November 2009 (UTC)
I am thinking that a generic template for various demographics would be better. They would be uniform and be as readable as we could make them. My original problem was readability. Not sure he was able to address that correctly. There probably are better presentations. The volume is overwhelming. They really should have been discussed first. Student7 (talk) 17:30, 1 December 2009 (UTC)
Sadly, Worldenc wasn't here to discuss or help Wikipedia, nor was he/she here to improve our project. He/she was only here for promotion, and an adgenda which employed this link-building scheme. While discussions for a templated solution for legitimate demographic uses seems practical, this isn't the topic nor place. We don't wan't to stuff beans up our noses, particularly where a serial-spammer has an extensive history of sockpuppetry. --Hu12 (talk) 18:21, 1 December 2009 (UTC)
Damn it Hu12! Now I've gone and stuffed a bean in my nose! Thanks alot for the idea. :) But I do encourage those who would, in a legit way create these graphs/charts (perhaps as a generic template where we can input our own numbers as needed?). Those who will be working on it please contact me at my talk page (and bring tweasers to pluck out my jelly bean nose problem).Camelbinky (talk) 02:06, 2 December 2009 (UTC)
LOL, ;). Having a multi-member wikiproject take ownership and oversight of a task like this should help avoid all the pitfals, inaccuracies, spam, promotion, COI, ect... that has occured in this case. Cheers--Hu12 (talk) 20:55, 2 December 2009 (UTC)

Every one has probably heard this strawman argument at some point. Its addapted from the argument to avoid WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS, however the shortcut looked funny as WP:OTHERLINKSEXISTS (ie SEXISTS). so I created WP:OTHERLINKS.

The nature of Wikipedia means that you can't make a convincing argument based on what other links in articles do or don't exist; because there's nothing stopping anyone from adding any link to any article. Plenty of links exist that probably shouldn't, conversly many links don't exist that probably should. So just pointing out that a link exists in an article doesn't prove that the link in question should also exist.

Hopefuly this is useful in some cases. Maby its better served on WP:EL? anyways...--Hu12 (talk) 19:22, 5 December 2009 (UTC)

List of performers of Christian music category - potential spam articles

Hi. First I apologize if this is the wrong page for this, but this is the closest I can find. Second I'd like some help from a few editors to go over the articles in this category with a fine-toothed comb.

Today I found an article on a singer named "Carman" which was nothing but one long promo about his ministry, with his personal website at the only source and plenty of outright lies (the article claimed he had been nomed for a Grammy - which I found out was nonsense in 5 minutes of google searching).

The sad part is that this article has been here for 2 years basically in it's current state (I just nomed it for deletion). I haven't looked over all the other ones in this category, but I've seen similar religious-oriented spam articles, such as articles about private schools. I'll be happy to give this list a lookover but I'd appreciate some assistance. Thanks.

Blacklisting due to BLP issues?

(Copied from Wikipedia:BLPN#Blacklisting due to BLP issues?, which has only received one response).

Is it appropriate to blacklist (or monitor through a bot like XLinkBot (talk · contribs)) external links because of WP:BLP concerns? Specifically, I encountered the addition of http://deceiver.com as a reference in this edit. I noticed that the same editor (and possibly others) has used the same reference in the past, and all those contributions were also removed per WP:BLP. --Ronz (talk) 16:05, 10 December 2009 (UTC)

If there has been abuse, perhaps Xlikbot is a start. here are the policies;
  • External links in biographies of living persons must be of high quality and are judged by a stricter standard than for other articles. Do not link to websites that contradict the spirit of this policy or that are not fully compliant with our guideline on external links.

User keeps adding in link to his personal website

Russell Auger (talkcontribsdeleted contribswhat links to user pagecountCOIBotuser page logsx-wikistatusAuger Edit filter searchGoogleStopForumSpam [31] He keeps adding in a link to his personal website http://www.aurides.com despite being reverted several times. Keeps using himself as a reference for the article material, but I'm not sure if that counts as spam. Constantly adding in a link to a personal website where you try to get people to hire you, I think qualifies as spam. Dream Focus 00:01, 21 December 2009 (UTC)

I am unable to delete this spam. Please help

The phrase "call of duty" --when found anywhere in Wikipedia, is connected to spam in the following way: It is underlined yellow. When a user hovers their mouse over the word, then a pop-up appears with a "hiliter shortcuts" link. The link is to ebay to someone who is trying to sell their copy of the game "Call of Duty." This is occurring in more than one article. It is occurring in the article Call of Duty and in the first paragraph of Medal of Honor. It is also occurring right in this edit here and now. Please help. Thanks.

Boyd Reimer (talk) 12:41, 21 December 2009 (UTC)

This isn't being done within Wikipedia. I've viewed that text on multiple browsers from multiple PCs. The problem appears to be your system. If you have not intentionally installed a browser add-in to provide those links, then the cause is most likely malware that has been installed on your system. You'll need to run scans to search and remove whatever virus, spyware, or other malware that is inserting those links on your system. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 19:30, 21 December 2009 (UTC)
Just to confirm: It is something installed in your computer, and it might be as simple as a Firefox add on. Put "hiliter shortcuts" into Google. Johnuniq (talk) 00:20, 22 December 2009 (UTC)
