Assessment

Hope I wasn't out-of-line but I went through and replaced the {{WikiProjectTyneandWear}} tag on articles with the {{WPTyneandWear}} tag, along with an importance rating and in some cases a quality rating. I also created all the associated categories and the Wikipedia:WikiProject Tyne and Wear/Assessment page. I think now we need to go through tagging and categorising as many pages as we can and then start working on lifting them up into decent articles.

John the mackem 01:19, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

  • No, no you were not out of line at all, you were helping the project and for that I and the other members and all of the Wikipedians on the english wikipedia are thankful!.TellyaddictEditor review! 13:13, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

Tyne and Wear info box

I am not proposing adding a new infobox to any of the articles that already have them - e.g. the cities, the bridges, etc. But there are a number of articles, particularly suburbs and villages where the existing infoboxes aren't fit for purpose. I propose a Tyne and Wear infobox. I feel it should be short and simple so as not to overwhelm the shorter "stub" articles.

How about:

  • Name:
  • Photograph: ? (if available)
  • Location: (using my dynamic-dot Tyne and Wear map when it's finished)
  • Suburb of:
  • Parliamentary constituency:
  • Post code area:
  • Population:

Anything missing? Anything not required? Should this just be for suburbs, etc. or should we make it generic enough for any Tyne and Wear location or landmark?

Once we thrash out the details I am happy to make it. John the mackem 18:39, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

  • Thats an excellent idea, what I think is that we could take out the location bit because the suburb name would be included in the Name section, however it's an open discussion and anyone can voice their opinion, at the end though it's up to you as i wouldn't really know where to start to create Infoboxes, I know how to create templates, articles userboxes etc its just infoboxes! Any other comments (also your effort and hardwork in such a small moment of time is greatly appreciated!TellyaddictEditor review! 20:08, 17 February 2007 (UTC)
{{Infobox_Tyne_and_Wear_place|
Place=Ryhope
|Latitude=54.86
|Longitude=-1.358
|SuburbOf=Sunderland
|District=City of Sunderland
|Parliament=Houghton and Washington East
|PostCode=SR2
|Population=14,000}}

Here we go - here's a first pass. Feedback and constructive criticism welcome! Still not convinced the dots are spot on, but they're pretty close. John the mackem 18:31, 18 February 2007 (UTC)

  • Thats great, one suggestion is that instead of a red pin selected on the location, maybe we should have it like is on other UK locations where there is a whole UK map and then the appropriate place is highlighted in a colour.TellyaddictEditor review! 20:02, 18 February 2007 (UTC)
Not quite sure what you mean - this map is based on the UK Location map used on articles such as Sunderland. Can you point me to an example of one where the place is highlighted in colour? John the mackem 00:15, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
  • Ooppps, my mistake, it is only on major metropolitan county articles such as Tyne and Wear where it is shaded in a colour, my mistake.

Can the map used include the 5 metropolitan boundaries? The infobox already includes a "suburb of" line so showing the district can only help in visualising this. It would also help differentiate between for example Sunderland the town and the City of Sunderland. --garryq 11:22, 20 February 2007 (UTC)

That's a good idea Garry, i'll have a play around with it when I get a chance. Are there any other fields you think should be on the infobox or is this sufficient? John the mackem 12:40, 20 February 2007 (UTC)

Borough boundaries are now on. With everyone's permission I will consider this infobox "approved", put a description and instructions on the project front page, then start rolling the box out onto articles. John the mackem 22:45, 22 February 2007 (UTC)

  • Thats a good idea, I like the sound of that!Tellyaddict 11:23, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

Expansion proposal

Hi, I was just wondering whether it would perhaps be useful to have a slightly wider scope for this project, and rename it as "Wikiproject North East England" - this would then encompass Northumberland and Country Durham as well, which it seems odd to exclude as they're very much a part of the heritage of the region, both geographically and historically. Bob talk 23:01, 18 February 2007 (UTC)

  • This is certainly something to consider here, however the logo and navigational side bars would all have to be changed but that probably would not take too long, I could do that because I still have the current logo saved and then just change it some it says WikiProject North East England; do you have any other suggestions? (Also you may wish to consider becoming a member - but this is optional).TellyaddictEditor review! 10:13, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

WikiProject Tyne and Wear→WikiProject North East England

As mentioned above by a user, they suggested a possible name change so it becomes WikiProject North East England, If you have any opinions (whether it be support or oppose) please list them in this section, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.TellyaddictEditor review! 14:14, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

Changing all of the assesment categories, templates, etc. would be very time consuming. Can we not just keep the names, etc. as they are, but include other North-East articles in the scope, so it becomes a de facto north-east project, if not in name? John the mackem 15:53, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
Well I'd be willing to change all of these if that was OK with you and other members of the Project, if I do it would you be OK With that (Note:If you would not mind helping with the categories name change if and when the name is changed then it would be appreicated). When you change the templates so it says for example Article name is supported by Wikiproject North East England once saved it would automatically transclude onto all of the templates in place on articles therefore meaning we would not have to go and change every one individually, any thoughts?TellyaddictEditor review! 19:36, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
I wouldn't mind, but I just question the value. I'm not saying don't widen the scope of the project, but you are taking on several hours of work for the sake of a name change. I didn't mind doing the groundwork because these categories and the assessment code didn't exist - so I saw it as value added work to put the time in to create them. But I don't think I can justify my time to go through and change them all. But I have no objection in principle. John the mackem 20:44, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
I have nothing against it, and don't mind helping with the changeover if someone lets me know how I can help. Dominie 22:30, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
Stuck down in the Sunderland salient its easy to see the advantages of including the north east rather than just one county. I support the change --garryq 11:11, 20 February 2007 (UTC)
Good idea I presume it would cover the area presently covered by Northumbria Police and the North East Ambulance Service ? Jim Sweeney (talk) 14:21, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

Tyne an Wear sta infobox

I have made an alteration to this so now it is possible to add platforms. However, i feel i have made it compulsory so this means many boxes will need to be quickly updated. Simply south 01:03, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

I have made a small amend to the infobox to make platforms non-compulsory DrFrench 11:15, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

Hi Gents, For your information, I have changed my username from John the mackem to Elysium 73 (anonymity problems... don't ask!). Apologies for the confusion. Elysium 73 22:51, 26 February 2007 (UTC)

Tyne and Wear places navigator

What do people think of this for the bottom of T&W place articles?

Too big? Too small? colours not right? Let me know your thoughts.

Elysium 73 22:30, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

:: Sorry for the late reply, did you make this - its really good, I'll help add them on to articles shortly! Thanks, also I no longer edit as Tellyaddict but now as Aquasplash, sorry for any inconvenience caused! Aquasplash 20:57, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

Very nice, although it might be quite nice if it was collapsable, i.e. Template:England topics or Template:Anglican Cathedrals in the United Kingdom. You could perhaps make it so that the larger areas, such as Gateshead, are visible and then the smaller places in its district are shown when a button is clicked. Bob talk
That is a good idea. I will have a look at doing it that way. Elysium 73 21:21, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

OK - so it's now collapsable. Feedback? Elysium 73 01:04, 10 March 2007 (UTC)

That's really good, well done. Bob talk 11:52, 10 March 2007 (UTC)
OK cheers. Feel free to roll it out guys, and improve it as necessary. I will stick some instructions on the project front page. Elysium 73 15:04, 10 March 2007 (UTC)
I know your probably thinking I'm trying to confuse you, I am back to using the Username Tellyaddict per Nishkid64 making me realise that it was a bit silly, although he/she did not say this I knew myself it way, anyway I'm back as Tellyaddict. As-well as this I think that newly improved navigation box for the bottom of T&W locations is great, it looks even better than before now some of the areas are hidden, it looks really neat and tidy! Borough should be capitalised... and why not Metropolitan Borough of South Tyneside/North Tyneside as well, as that's what they are? In fact, the official titles are Gateshead MB, STMB and NTMB respectively — superbfc [ talk | cont ]03:15, 11 March 2007 (UTC)

I was just going off the titles of the Wiki articles. Be bold and update as necessary. Elysium 73 03:30, 11 March 2007 (UTC)
Yes, and Metropolitan Borough of Gateshead is capitalised in the article titie. Why rely on Wikipedia for everything??? Why not make your own decision to refer to things properly? It just looks a bit strange having some places as SOMETHING of SOMEWHERE and others just as the place name. — superbfc [ talk | cont ]21:50, 11 March 2007 (UTC)
OK, calm down. If it's wrong, change it. Don't mouth off at the person who spent hours making it and got a capital letter wrong. Jeez. Elysium 73 23:07, 11 March 2007 (UTC)
Apologies - nice work, I was just asking a couple of questions. Sorry if I came across as being negative. — superbfc [ talk | cont ]15:06, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

Unassessed articles

Could any members please assess any articles which need assessing, a list can be found by clicking on the assessment on the side bar of the project page and then clicking unassessed on the table, however their must be more than approximately 70 places which fall within the scope of WikiProject Tyne and Wear, any help in finding articles not yet tagged on the article talk page would be greatly appreciated. Regards - Tellyaddict (Talk) 18:40, 10 March 2007 (UTC)

I've just found a category in which altogether which has a large number of places relating to Tyne and Wear which are unassessed, it also has loads of subcategories as-well so their must be thousands of unassessed articles. I'm going to give a hand with this. The categories are located at:

If you see anymore could you please add them, thanks and any help in assessing would be appreciated.Best Regards - Tellyaddict (Talk) 12:03, 11 March 2007 (UTC)

Name change

Due to comments left by members about the previous name change of the project, it has temporariliy been on hold to reach a community concensus, because the name change seems to be supported by many, I will in the near future be leaving templates on the category talk pages asking them to be rename to WikiProject North East England, I will be changing the logo and the sub page names so hopefully everything will be changed over within the near future. Best Regards - Tellyaddict (Talk) 18:48, 11 March 2007 (UTC)

I have completed most of the change over over from WikiProject Tyne and Wear to WikiProject North East England, the templates, infoboxes, etc have all been renamed with a new image, all thats left is the categories but I have added the appropriate template to the talk page of the categories and specifically asked an administrator to rename them ASAP so it would b exactly the same but it will just say North East England instead of Tyne and Wear, I'll post here when the change over is fully complete. Best Regards - Tellyaddict (Talk) 16:45, 12 March 2007 (UTC)
Great, thanks. Incidentally, have we thought about getting the North East England Portal up and running again? It's not really been altered much following its creation in 2006, but could be a good place to link our better project-related articles. Bob talk 22:26, 12 March 2007 (UTC)
I created the portal (thanks for inviting me), it's no problem at all if you want to resuscitate it, I can't update it regularly at the moment; plus, this Wikiproject can probably decide better than me what should be on it - I always tried to choose things to represent the whole north-east rather than just the cities of the region (although these are important of course).
You could maybe also consider changing the shortcut (WP:NEE) to link to the Wikiproject instead of the portal, or use WPR:NEE as well. Cheers! - Responsible? 16:22, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

Shortcut

Do you think the shortcut to this project should change? Or is it okay as WP:T&W? Of course others can be added. Simply south 22:22, 12 March 2007 (UTC)

I'll be adding them in the near future, all that is left of the change over is for the categories to be renamed, an administrator has said they will do this shortly, I'll add the shortcut soon, I know I've said before but if you want to put your list onj the list of participants then please do! Thanks! Best Regards - Tellyaddict (Talk) 12:32, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

Metro station plates

Station names in infoboxes should really be rendered as text rather than an image, for accessibility reasons. Would there be any great objection to putting them back to text? Chris cheese whine 15:29, 16 March 2007 (UTC)

Yes. Strong objections. Accessibility is not an issue, the article name is in plain text and each image file has a caption tage that can be rendered by accessibility softwtare.

DrFrench 21:06, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

OK, my bad, I should have clarified this. Any valid objections? As in, grave-enough-to-upset-the-image-use-policy valid. Chris cheese whine 21:15, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

New map

Hello NE England team! I've spent some time developing maps for use in the new UK place infobox. Greater Manchester and Greater London have been using them (see examples such as Acton, London and Salford) with great success.

I've created one for Tyne and Wear using the same format (I intend to get some consistency across the UK for conurbations so we can rival other country's articles).

It can be viewed here. If you could check it is OK (particularly in terms of accuracy) and get back to me on my talk page with your endorsments or insults, I'd be very grateful. If all is well I hope to upload this version then move on to the West Midlands. Jhamez84 14:19, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

Infobox flag straw poll

Hello fellow editors. A straw poll has opened today (27th March 2007) regarding the use of flags on the United Kingdom place infoboxes. There are several potential options to use, and would like as many contrubutors to vote on which we should decide upon. The straw poll is found here. If joining the debate, please keep a cool head and remain civil. We look forward to seeing you there. Jhamez84 11:59, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

Darlington has been moved!

Our friends in the US have yet again decided that an English town doesnt have rightful claim to the article space it has. This time it is Darlington which has now been moved by User:Ace Frahm to Darlington (England). Whilst I believe WP convention means Darlington has strongest claim to the space Darlington, the user at least this time put a mention on the talk page about a month ago (somehow despite it being on my watch list I missed it). If this move is kept, I suggest it isnt - even it doesnt move back to Darlington it should move to Darlington, County Durham per UK settlement convention, this move has caused a lot of collateral damage with articles now linking to the wrong page. Pit-yacker 13:13, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

I've put the redirect back until the original mover fixes the mess. Frankly I think we should put this onto WP:RM Regan123 23:38, 21 August 2007 (UTC)

Guidelines

Hello WikiProject North East England participants,

Just a line that I've added som trans-WikiProject guidelines for settlement articles to this project's mainspace. WP:UKCITIES are guidelines from the "mother" WP:UKGEO project based on those at WP:CITIES (A "global" WikiProject for settlements that is US driven). They have been employed by a number of articles to standardise content, obtain a consistent style and approach and drive them towards good and featured article status with considerable success, and are so far also endorssed by Wikipedia:WikiProject Greater Manchester, Wikipedia:WikiProject Cheshire, Wikipedia:WikiProject Yorkshire, Wikipedia:WikiProject Sheffield, Wikipedia:WikiProject Kent, Wikipeadia:WikiProject Somerset amongst many others.

It is in this capacity I've considered it a fair rationale to add these. I hope it's not contentious in any way! Best of luck with the project! -- Jza84 · (talk) 11:06, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

Tyne and Wear Transport

I think thre is enough information around and to be added that there should be an article on transportation in Tyne and Wear. If nobody minds or if anybody would like to contribute. I will probably create it within the next few days. Simply south (talk) 01:11, 25 November 2007 (UTC)

Bot talk page tagging for Assessment purposes? / complete transition from WPTyneandWear

Would I be right in thinking that Wikipedia:WikiProject North East England/Assessment is currently "broken", in that it'll not be picking up articles tagged by {{WPNorthEastEngland}}? Talk pages with {{WPNorthEastEngland}} are categorised as "x-Class WikiProject Tyne and Wear articles". Many pages are tagged by {{WPTyneandWear}}. Presumably all aspects of the project should transition to North East England nomenclature.

If so, would there be agreement that we might find ourselves a bot to do a couple of things:

  1. Replace all instances of {{WPTyneandWear}} with {{WPNorthEastEngland}}?
  2. (Recategorise {{WPNorthEastEngland}} as "x-Class WikiProject North East England articles" & amend the assessment page)
  3. Tag all talk pages in selected categories with {{WPNorthEastEngland}} to seed article assessment?

The last of these two - tagging by bot - caused a bit of a rumpus in WikiProject:GreaterManchester, when it recursed through caterogories & picked up a bunch of footballers ... nevertheless I will not live long enough to tag everything in Category:Villages in Northumberland &c ... would there be objections to considering bots? ==Tagishsimon (talk) 00:36, 30 December 2007 (UTC)
