Introduction

Well I'd add the 7 or so names you have in the order they were. There are others around. A good logo would be good. We could use the Flag for now until we get a stronger one. Victuallers 17:35, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

Well, you can do whatever you want! There is still loads to do to get the project fully up and running - I'm working on most of the templates, but what would be really useful atm would be to make a list of all related articles and/or categories, and list them on the main page! Hello everyone. I am very active in the Cheshire Project (being the founding member of it), and have created a few of the templates we use in it. Please feel free to steal, adapt, and improve on any we have for the project. I've slipped into paying more attention to civil parishes than other matters, and, if people feel this would be a useful area for this Derbyshire project, I'll contribute in that way. I'm in the middle of doing some important editing and article creation on articles concerned with the History of Cheshire, and so I won't be able to devote all my wikipedia time to this. Tagging, etc

Well i'll start listing pages. i'll also start tagging things as well. Is there anyway of listing all articles that are tagged as that would make everything a little easier. Also is there anywhere to put the listed articles. i'll whack them on the main page and go from there. The banner above looks very pretty but does seem to promote trams and such i would change it but i have no idea how to. Dommccas 14:05, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

Try adding [[Category:Derbyshire]] to the article pages you want flagging up as being associated with Derbyshire. If you do this, then go to the page (just type Category:Derbyshire into the search bar and press "go"), you should eventually start seeing all pages which have been categorized as being in Derbyshire appear. You can produce sub-pages to this to separately categorize, say, "Towns in Derbyshire", "Villages in Derbyshire", etc etc. The categories should also appear when you view the articles. To see how we categorize things and where we place them in Cheshire, try looking at the source (as if you are going to edit) Chester, Haslington, Macclesfield, to get some ideas. Try going to Category:Cheshire to see how we've arranged the hierarchy of categories, too. You can, but it can be a bit tricky to set up. We've done it on Cheshire things. go to the page: Template:WikiProject Cheshire and look at the source (press edit, but don't actually edit anything, please). You can see that there is a lot of stuff added there that will categorize articles based on their quality and their importance (we actually use "Priority" in the names of the importance categories to let us know what priority to assign to the ones that are in most need of improvement). You end up with a set of categories that display articles according to their quality and priority, and there are default values for these if no assessment has been carried out. If people don't object, I could copy over that template and edit it to make it a Derbyshire one. There may be some tinkering around with it to get it to work, but let me know, and I'll try to do it if people think that would help. DDStretch (talk) 15:35, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

Ok. I think I've done it now. It needs to be used a bit to see whether it works well. So, assessments of the class and importance should be given to tagged articles like this: {{Project Derbyshire|class=start|importance=low}} (using the appropriate value for the class and importance fields.) Please note, it is important that "class" and "importance" are entered in small letters (no capital initial letter), or else the assessment of quality or importance won't be registered. I don't know how or whether it can be made so that either small or capital initial letters would be acceptable. DDStretch (talk) 16:29, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

Just one thing. I have tagged all the categories because they are easy, yet when i try and tag something like Talk:Allestree there are a couple of lines of code generated at the bottom of the banner which read

[[Category: Derbyshire|Allestree]][[Category:Derbyshire|Allestree]]

This doesn't happen for categories but it does for others and unnrated ones (Talk:Allenton, Derbyshire). I would fix it but as i have already stated i know nothing :-) Dommccas 17:03, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

Ok - I can see what you mean, and I've now seen it on, I think, other pages. What I've done is to to re-write the project banner. I think its functionality is identical to the old one, but it should now not cause any problems. The extra stuff already added will have to be removed by hand, but I hope that won't be too big a job. What to do?

I saw that one of the first additions of our template brought in a new editor asking "What to do? I guess if we want more interest then adding templates to Derbyshire related articles is a good idea. EDitors can also have a go at assessment, but on other projects we ask that people discuss anything higher than a Start or higher than Mid .... hope that helps

Can I also suggest that we REMOVE Project England templates. We need to do this or articles will get double counted.... and we are a sub-project of theirs. Victuallers 13:13, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

I enquired about this with respect to the Cheshire project, as on some of those articles, there are three templates: Cheshire, England, and UK geography. The general consensus was that multiple templates/assessments were no bad thing, but I must admit, the problem of mis-matches, and, as you have stated, double-counting did concern me. If you want to do it, perhaps it would be best if you were also a member of those projects so that it could be done by a member of the removed project? Just an idea, and not a requirement, though. Hi i just added a to do list which i think looks cool. I added some of them off the top of my head a couple i stole from the to do list from Talk:Derbyshire. These all seem good ideas to start with but maybe need some way of cheecking if the've been done for specific articles (the infobox especially). Importance and quality

Thgis should probably go on the assessment talk page but i though i'd put it here for the moment. As is mentioned by ddstretch above other projects discuss anything higher than a mid or start for importance and class. Class is very nicely set out in the assessment page but importance is still based on UK Trams. I was wondering if we could have some kind of outline for importance. I'll outline a few here.

Derbyshire, Chesterfield, Derby

High

All districts of Derbyshire and suburbs of Derby

Mid

All towns

That's a good idea, I think. The list so far deals with the county itself (which should be Top priority) and cities/towns. Are there other geographical features, important estates, parks, and houses (Chatsworth, for example), rivers that should be given some importance criteria as well? How about History of Derbyshire? My thoughts are that Chatsworth House should be made at least mid importance (possibly at least a high importance), given its significance (it isn't tagged at all at the moment, I recall.) Peak District could also be given a Derbyshire tag, and I think its national importance would justify giving it at least a high importance. I also think History of Derbyshire should be given high importance as it deals with the entire county and tells about its founding, and important events in its history. Those are my thoughts for now. I'm now working through Category:Buildings and structures in Derbyshire for something to do and i was thinking of aome general guidlines for importance.

Most people in Derbyshire will have heard of this. Or has wider national or worldwide significance such as Belper North Mill‎ as its a world heritage site.

Mid

An area which is important on a local scale with countywide or national significance

Not many people will have heard of this outside of its sphere of interest with small local significance.

None

A very specified area of interest with no local, countywide or national significance

'Derbyshire flag'

This flag is clearly the one promoted by BBC Radio Derby, after its listeners had voted on some designs shortlisted by the BBC. But I'm wondering, does the flag have any status other than that? Xn4 22:10, 2 October 2007 (UTC)

Thanks, Bluegoblin! I wasn't meaning to hint that the flag should go completely, it could perhaps have a little corner somewhere with a note to explain what it is. But I agree that a unique headline logo for the project would be better. Peak District GA/A/FA?

I completely agree with your upgrading this to a 'B', Bluegoblin. To go beyond that, a more formal review process is needed. I'm sure the article isn't an 'A' yet, because (per Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Assessment) "once an article reaches the A-Class, it is considered complete", and this one has some way to go to get there. I'm with Espresso Addict's list on the article's talk page of the work which needs to be done before a GA attempt is made. I suggest encouraging their efforts, with that in mind. If we can help to give the article some prominence, then perhaps a few others will join in the good work being done on it. Regards, Xn4 02:58, 5 October 2007 (UTC)

WP:UKCITIES

Hello WikiProject Derbyshire participants,

Just a line trying to promote some trans-WikiProject guidelines for settlement articles. WP:UKCITIES are guidelines from the "mother" WP:UKGEO project based on those at WP:CITIES (A "global" WikiProject for settlements that is US driven). They have been employed by a number of articles to standardise content, obtain a consistent style and approach and drive them towards good and featured article status with considerable success, and are so far also endorssed by Wikipedia:WikiProject Greater Manchester, Wikipedia:WikiProject Cheshire, Wikipedia:WikiProject Yorkshire and Wikipedia:WikiProject Sheffield, amongst others.

Not too many users (or indeed projects) are aware of the guidelines, and thought it may be helpful if all the county WikiProjects had a link to them to help them get the results they want. Hope that helps, Jza84 02:03, 10 October 2007 (UTC)

Archiving?

Hmmm... Not too sure at the mo! Theres not been much discussion atm, so maybe, at the moment, get rid of the stuff from the project set up, and then see what happens? At the moment I agree and think it should be done monthly, then maybe at the end of the year put them all together into a '2007 archive'. I'll start by doing that. New Look Bits...

Hi All,

I'm doing some new look stuff, but just wondered what you would want to see. I am also going to do some images specific to the project: Namely, a project logo, instead of the Derbyshire Flag, a mini-icon for the project page (no idea what yet though), and then also any others that anyone thinks are needed!

Also, I need some help... How can I change the colour of links? currently, I have a blue link on a blue background - please help!

Also, please comment too!

I notice that you took the entire page from WikiProject Greater Manchester, it is not possible to change the colour of the linking text I am afraid, we had that problem on the GM Project with blue text clashing with a red background. _└^and-rew_┘^┌_talk^┐ 07:32, 5 November 2007 (UTC)

Further to the above...

I have now done a new project page, as can be seen (a few sections at the bottom still need to be merged from the old page).

I have also created a, rather primative, Barnstar for the project, so far awarded to Victuallers, Schumi555 and Xn4. Well Done!

A project logo is nearly complete and will be online tonight. Still need a mini-icon though. Hmm... What does Derbyshire have lots of?...

Request for help

Hello good people of Derbyshire. I have just created an article for John Mawe, a Derbyshire-born mineralogist, who wrote on the Minerals of Derbyshire (he is already mentioned in the article on the Peak District). Apparently there is (or was) a memorial to him in Castleton church. Could someone see if the memorial is still there, and if so, take a photo and add it to the article? I've taken a look at that Portuguese article - apart from the date of his death in the lead, the extra information it has is about his visit to Santa Caterina, which I've imported. NB, pt:John Mawe seems to overdo the importance of On a Gold Mine in South America. Xn4 23:27, 21 November 2007 (UTC)
