Recording eligibility

"The work recorded must have passed into the Public domain in order to be eligible for recording." Does this mean WP doesn't allow recordings of anything published after 1923 (e.g. Hindemith, Messiaen)? Also, I use specific editions of pre-1923 music that likely differ from the "public domain" versions in certain ways (e.g. Broude Bros.: Buxtehude), and their copyright is usually in the 1990s. Are these out too? Sorry for the somewhat ignorant questions, but I haven't had to deal with public domain or fair use while recording before :) —Sesquialtera II (talk) 03:17, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

My understanding is that legally, if we record something which is still under copyright, that recording will be covered by the copyright of the work itself, thus it is impossible to release it under a free license. That means, once again according to my own understanding (IANAL), using the recording to illustrate a WP article is legally the same as using a copyrighted recording.

As for editions, I believe that if the edition contains significant editorial input and is still under copyright, the recording made from it would be copyrighted. If there is not significant editorial input, first of all, it would be darn hard to prove, and most of what would be copyrighted would be the typesetting, meaning that a recording of it would be fine. So, in the end, to be 100% safe we should use PD editions/facsimiles, but if you've already memorized a piece or something, as long as you don't use a pre-fab cadenza, you should be fine. I can't claim to know enough about the technical aspects to answer your question well, but I can point at our article, Ogg. Ogg is basically a patent un-encumbered codec. I believe it's basically equivalent to Mp3, except it's free. You might ask User:Gmaxwell if you have more specific questions about the format or why we use it on Wikipedia. Wikipedia:Requested pronunciation

I'm interested in developing Wikipedia:Requested pronunciation - a page where people can request that pronunciation (IPA) can be added to a page, if the pronunciation isn't clear. It is likely to be most useful for foreign words, where pronunciation of letters is different in other languages. Ideally, I'll be looking for pages to have pronunciation in English and the local language, a good example seems to be at Paris#Etymology. Could this be included in your project, or shall I set it up - I'll write a draft in the next few days at User:Montchav/Requested pronunciation if there's not a page already out there for this project. --Montchav 13:14, 2 November 2007 (UTC)
