Deepak Chopra pronunciation guide

Hello, I posed this question at Talk:Deepak Chopra#Pronunciation guide the other day, but haven't gotten a responses yet, so I thought I'd try here. The question is this... The pronunciation guide on Deepak Chopra gives the Hindustani pronunciation: Deepak Chopra (/ˈdiːpɑːk ˈtʃoʊprə/ Hindi pronunciation: [d̪iːpək tʃoːpraː]), but in the body of the article, someone cited one of Chopra's books to support a statement that his native language is Punjabi. My gut tells me that the Hindustani IPA template was a mistake and that his article should use the Punjabi template (assuming one exists), but I don't know enough about IPA or either of those languages to know if there was a good reason for choosing the Hindustani template. In the 2nd line of the article it is written as Nagaland and Tripura and Sikkim. It should be Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim. It does seem like a problematic list. What does 'from Punjab' mean for example? Someone born in the Punjab? Would that include Rudyard's dad? Someone with an ancestry that includes the Punjab? Would that include (almost) every member of the Sikh diaspora? Even the definition of Punjab is unclear. Do we mean the Punjab of British times? The Punjab of Pakistan + the Punjab of post-partition India. Or the decimated Punjab state that is now in India. Finally, of course, there is the problem of length. One presumes that a lot of people are 'from Punjab'. Wouldn't that make the list inordinately long and thus practically useless? I have been looking for this since long time, got general consensus and everything over here. Actually i had created the Wikipedia project page for Wikipedia:WikiProject Udaipur, but the statistics count is not getting updated. I know that we need to update the article's talk page to include the term 'udaipur=yes' in the project template. But even after doing so, the articles are not shown in the table. When i manually add some relevant category to the talk page, it starts showing in the table. For instance, i added the category 'Category-Class Udaipur articles' to the talk page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category_talk:Udaipur, it started showing in the table. Does this exist?

Right now the article War (Bengali film) is up for deletion and there's a strong suspicion that it's a hoax, since there's just no coverage out there for the movie. The film stars some fairly well known people and is put out by a major production company, so there's no reason for the media not to announce the stars and the movie's existence. If anything, this makes it more suspicious since I know that Indian newspapers love their movie stars just as much as America loves theirs, if not more so.

Can anyone see if there is any foreign language coverage? If there's none then I'm thinking of opening up an SPI, since the article has been created three times by three different accounts, which makes this awfully suspicious. Tokyogirl79 (｡◕‿◕｡) 09:50, 7 April 2016 (UTC)

I cannot search for foreign language coverage, but I did some searching through English language media sources, with which I am more familiar. As far as I can tell, it is a hoax; I can find nothing. The page for Nusrat_Faria_Mazhar, one of the costars, uses a link as a reference for this film as an entry. The link is not a real news story, but a "news" homepage, on which I cannot find anything relevant. So, not conclusive, but indicative of a hoax. Vanamonde93 (talk) 04:50, 8 April 2016 (UTC)

nowrunning.com

Hi all, hate to bring this up here, but the Indian cinema task force is a ghost town. Anyone know anything about nowrunning.com? It looks like a standard cookie-cutter blog like I see all day long being added to Indian cinema articles for spam purposes. There are about 1900 uses of this domain across Wikipedia, so it's somewhat popular, though I see nothing on their site (For instance their Contact Us page) that would clearly indicate they are a reliable source run by journalists, or that the site has an established reputation for fact-checking. It should be removed as spam and blacklisted, this is not a blog, it's a consolidator website that runs on advertorial revenue. Content isn't theirs but what's aggregated through APIs/feeds from other websites. —SpacemanSpiff 07:57, 17 April 2016 (UTC)
SpacemanSpiff any specific detail you have about this would be appreciated tremendously, especially if I'm going to take it to WikiProject Spam. I'm also having a similar issue with Onlookersmedia.in, like here where it's being used to elevate box office grosses. This site's about us page makes it seem like it's run by amateurs, not journalists. This is not as huge of a problem as nowrunning.com with only about 2 dozen links for onlookers but it's still questionable, and as I'm sure you all know, poor sourcing is a huge problem in Indian cinema articles. I have been slowly working on a reliable sources FAQ, but with participation dwindling at the Indian cinema task force, it's been very difficult to get that off the ground. Well, it's difficult to pinpoint the specifics and you'll have to do a comparison of the site content with other sites for that, but just take the images and do a google search and you'll find all the photos at Bollywood Hungama and others. Getting coordinates and displaying maps for lists of places in India

Hi, I don't know if many editors of India-related topics know of the use of {{GeoGroup}} together with coordinates for list-items, which puts links to maps showing all the places in OSM, Google, or Bing. It happens that I don't see this done in a few India-related list-articles that I have browsed. I just added this feature to List of temples in Bhubaneswar, Orissa, India. I started with the coordinates available at a few temples' corresponding articles. But I notice that many temples' articles have imprecise coordinates (just degrees and minutes but not seconds of latitude and longitude) or none at all (perhaps because few realize how precise coordinates can be useful?). You can get exact coordinates of buildings if you know the place, by use of Google satellite maps: use regular Google maps to navigate your way to an approximate location, then switch to satellite view, then zoom in to the building, then right-click and select "What's here" to see the exact coordinates, which you can copy-paste. Or at least that works well for me using Chrome browser. I kind of think adding coordinates works well for list-articles that present their items in tables; I would be less eager to add coordinates for bare lists like, say, the current version of "List of temples in Lahore", Pakistan.

Perhaps "how to" do this is well-known? Sorry for bothering you then. Anyhow, help identifying the locations of the temples in Bhubaneswar would be appreciated. And perhaps also soon for a List of Hindu temples in Cuttack (currently a redlink, about city also in Orissa), which I am suggesting as an alternative to deletion at ongoing Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Maa Jhanhiri Mangala Temple. Thanks Doncram for this note. I wasn't aware of GeoGroup myself, although now i remember having seen it on some recent FLC; power plants or dams in some country it was. Few years back i have added geocodes on various Category:Dams in Maharashtra. Great question. I see it would be useful to create a list-article about dams in Maharashtra: it would make a list of all the articles and the coordinates appearing in the articles. A variation would be to collect coordinates from all articles appearing in a list. Such a tool would be very useful to me too. I am pretty sure that for one application (e.g. dams in Maharashtra), if you asked at wp:bot requests a bot programmer would run the report. I don't know if it how hard it is to get a reusable tool created, but I am asking now, at wp:Bot requests#List the coordinates appearing in a category or list of articles. Here are my experiences in creating a Geogroup for Baltistan#Valleys and districts. When I first entered the coordinates for the entries in the table and clicked on the map links, nothing showed, only one map point for the overall Baltistan. I had to do {{Geogoup|section=Valleys and districts}} in order to get the map points in the table. I don't know if this is a bug or a feature.

Google Maps only gave me decimal coordinates. To convert them to degrees-minutes (to reduce clutter) I used the Geolocator tool. I don't know if there is a better way. In any case, once I got it to work, I set the "display=none" option in the {{coord}} templates so that the coordinates are not displayed at all. UA v Metro

Need standard definition on articles such as Urban agglomeration of Eluru, Vijayawada Urban Agglomeration, Kollam Metropolitan Area, Kochi Metropolitan Area. Are both urban agglomeration and Metropolitan area the same? As per Census 2011 the ref is here. 'Urban agglomeration' is a census-based definition; it has got nothing to do with a city's governance. The UA articles listed above ought to be deleted. Metropolitan area is a definition given by an authority that governs a particular city (for eg., local planning area). A metropolitan area is different from an UA. No, both aren't one and the same. The UA articles should be AFDed (even if they exist for cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai). —Vensatry (Talk) 08:48, 29 April 2016 (UTC)
Vensatry has it right, UA should perhaps be covered in the city articles and shouldn't be listed separately. The metro definition is entirely different and UAs are not always a subset of metros of vice versa. If a venn diagram were to be drawn the only certainty is that the city would be within the intersection of the UA and the Metro. UAs don't have any purpose other than to document contiguous population for census purposes and therefore are better addressed within city articles. If this is a recurring problem then I think a well structured RfC here for all India UA/Metros might be a good option. —SpacemanSpiff 08:55, 29 April 2016 (UTC)
  • Indian articles have various such pending issues that affect large number of articles. Its nice that @Vin09: is dedicating a lot of time on cleaning cities and towns articles. The topic might not be of interest to many editors but what others can do is at least comment on common RFCs so editors who want to work on such topics have a way forward with it. Vin09, please raise a common RFC on this topic and others related to Indian geolocations that you usually work on. Lets start sorting out our issues one by one. @Vin09: I'd suggest withdrawing that RfC immediately. An RfC shouldn't be open ended like that as it will lead to pie-in-the-sky statements. I'm not exactly sure what the issues here are, so you (or someone familiar with it) will have to do it. I just opined about the difference between an Urban Agglomeration and Metro area. How that should be addressed is best left to people like you who work in this area. Train-the-Trainer and MediaWiki Training: Capacity building initiatives for the Wikimedia community

Like the previous years [1][2] CIS-A2K is planning for a capacity building activity for the Indic-language Wikimedia communities this year. This 3-4 day event, that is planned to be organized in Bengaluru, will include several parallel training sessions. The general sessions will broadly include:

  • How to conduct Wikimedia outreach (workshops, GLAM activities, edit-a-thons)
  • Ways to groom new contributors
  • Advanced Wikipedia editing and Wikipedia policy and guidelines

Similarly, the MediaWiki training will include:

  • MediaWiki - installation, analysis, understanding
  • Working with MediaWiki
  • How bots work on Wikimedia projects with an emphasis on pywikibot
  • Bug triage, bug life cycle, raising a bug, fixing a bug
  • General overview of FOSS, Openness, social media, Copyright, Creative Commons

We are looking forward to nominate yourself or nominate any other member of your community to participate in this event. We will be selecting the participants based on the community recommendation. We are looking forward to hearing your inputs on the program design and anything in particular that you would like to see.

Please note that the Wikimedians who have not attended the previous iterations of this training will be given more preference.

"green-certified"

National Museum of Natural History, New Delhi#History speaks of "a ₹ 250 crore green-certified building". I gather that "green-certified" signifies some attestation to environmental soundness, but that's all I get. There's no page for it or for "green certification", and the definition on Green certificate doesn't seem to fit. The term may be well understood in India, but not in the US. I've only done fifteen minutes worth of news searching. I've managed to get a vague picture of this green certificate according to our country. I got a report talking of the Rashtrapati Bhavan getting one per ISO standard. Another and another about a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) definition (it's American I think). Similarly there's a Indian Green Building Council (IGBC)-rated one. The Museum is both LEED and something called GRIHA (Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment)-this another national one per the ref in the article.
I doubt another article would be needed, when there's a tag to globalise Green certificate, but then again, I'm always reluctant to create new. Let me know your thoughts on what we should do. Notability for buildings

I recently came across this article. The only claim to notability here is that of height, but the tower is not remotely the tallest in the state or the country or anything. There are a number of similar articles for other towers in India. Does anybody know if there is an obscure notability guideline covering these? Otherwise, they might need to be mass AfDd. I couldn't find any guideline or even essay covering this. There is List of tallest buildings and structures in South Asia which all of these barely notable towers can get redirected to via {{R to list entry}}; that list is in equally bad shape though. I feel mass afding would take longer when you can do this mass non-controversial redirecting. Ugog Nizdast (talk) 13:51, 2 May 2016 (UTC)

Sigh, this is not a law or a bill considered by Parliament, it's some fringe group proposing that parliament takes it up. No one wants to cover it, so of course Wikipedia in its infinite wisdom would like to host an article about it. —SpacemanSpiff 00:54, 29 April 2016 (UTC)
It does not seem to have received any mainstream attention, so a stand-alone article does not seem appropriate to me. Hi. Sorry that your good faith attempts were undone, it's because of the way you've written it. We don't accept flowery language in the encyclopaedia, for instance "The rawness and innocence in her voice prompted director..." is hardly encyclopaedic, stick to adding the raw facts to the article.. Secondly all material should be reliably sourced, youtube usually doesn't count.

Organising a vote on Indic-Scripts

Hullo everybody,

There's a so-called "consensus" on Indic scripts that goes back quite a long time ago and was wondering if a new vote could be organised? (I don't think there was any initial voting to be frank)

The reasons are as follows: The consensus seems to be very strictly enforced on any India related page but Indic scripts are used broadly on say the Wikipedia page of Bangladesh, where's the logic in that?

Secondly, the ban against Indic script stemmed from the controversy of what language should be used to write the native names of Indian personalities eg local languages like Gujerati for Gandhi and Modi? Or Hindi, the official language, for everyone? But where's no language controversy like in writing Bharat Ganarajya in Hindi, why the fuss?

Thirdly, I personally favour scrapping the ban by using the same policies as applied to personalities who come from countries where there are multiple official languages or people who are of "foreign" origins when compared to their current nationality or state of residence.

For instance, Nobel Laureate Ada Yonath has her name in Hebrew despite the fact that Israel has two official languages. Her religious background was here seen as a criterion for picking the right language.

Similar solutions based on background could be used for Indian personalities.

What are your views?

There most certainly was a previous RfC; folks who have been here longer than me, like @Sitush: or @RegentsPark: or @Dharmadhyaksha: will probably be able to point you to the RfC itself. The logic behind it is quite straightforward; Bangladesh uses a single language in a way that India does not, from what I know from digging into the literature on this a while back. Aside from the basic question of which language to use, there are a couple of other issues. First, the lede can become a magnet for POV warriors who try to "claim" an individual by inserting a name in a certain language. Second, the lede can quickly become an unwieldy mess of names; far better to place them under the "native_name" parameter of the infobox. Third, names in native languages are actually of very limited use. The majority of readers are unlikely to speak a specific language that may be in the lede; and even for those who do, what does having it in the text (as opposed to the infobox) really add? Of course, that said, nobody can stop you from opening an RfC; but for all these reasons, I doubt it will be of very much use. Vanamonde93 (talk) 22:45, 10 May 2016 (UTC)
Yes, this has been much discussed and the consensus (please note that we don't 'vote' on things here) is to avoid using indic scripts in the lead. India is a unique country in the sense that there are a plethora of languages, a multiplicity of identities, and not always certainty in the association of locations of places with the culture of the region. In many cases, this results in a messy lead (lots of scripts that few English wiki readers can read or understand), pov pushing, or even blp issues (should Ramachandra Guha's name be rendered in Tamil for example). I'd support a new RfC. The arguments in the two previous ones (as far as I can remember from skimming through them a while back) centred around a specific set of articles (about personalities or entities of contested identity). Despite this specific scope, the decision seems to have been applied (in principle, although not always in practice) across the board. Ramachandra Guha was born in current Uttarakhand where the state languages are Hindi and Sanskrit. According to the Indian constitution, Hindi is to be written in Devanagari script. Sanskrit used to be written in multiple scripts but now no more (Is there an official stand on the issue? I wonder but the article on Sanskrit has clearly favoured Devanagari)

Solution: His name should be written in Devanagari. He is of Tamil ethnicity but born out of Tamil Nadu so primacy is here given to place of birth.

Same for Rajinikanth, born in Karnataka so preeminence given to Kannada alphabet .

By the way, Devanagari is used on the Uttarakhand page and Kannada alphabet on the Karnataka article, in the leads, I invite you three to rush forward to delete these.

These might be the respective official laguages in these two states (and their respective scripts) but Hindi is one of the two official (not national) languages of India and if you read the lead of the article, India is not written in Devanagari, neither as इंडिया nor as भारत.

Any explanations?

Pure and simple votes, although not completely irrelevant, aren't what matters in discussions like these. The system is explained at WP:RFC. As for the articles on the languages themselves, they're an explicit exception at WP:INDICSCRIPTS. Not to mention blp issues. Does a Tamilian born in Uttarakhand identify with Hindi or Tamil? Perhaps he loathes Hindi. Perhaps he doesn't read or write Tamil. Many web browsers do not support indic scripts and for them these are just strings of boxes. And for plenty many readers, these strings, boxes or not, make no sense as they can read none of these languages. Political parties

Need opinion if an MLA changes his party, does the column needs to be updated with the present party or the one which he won in the main elections. Many IPs have changed in these pages.

I'd agree with RP on the above list, but in lists like Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election, 2011 it should document the party affiliation that the candidate won the election with. I think using WP:REFGROUP in both types of lists might also be helpful. In the current view a note could be added to state the original party and the election lists a note could be added to show the current party. IMO as the legislator party switches will be covered by the applicable disqualification laws, only on the say so of the speaker should any new party recognition be considered. I'm looking at Paradesi_Jews#Last_remaining_Paradasi_Jews and wonder whether it is kosher to name individuals in this context. Meh, I was just telling someone on my talk page that our enforced standards of notability are absurdly low when it comes to people who haven't done much except be themselves and the above two AfDs just prove my point. As for the other person included in the listing, I believe the reference is circular as this site looks to be a copy of en.wiki (will have to figure out which version of which articles were used), so that might have to go for sure. For several weeks now, User:Machli jal has been making undiscussed changes to the List of current Indian chief ministers featured list and the File:Indian states according to party of their chief minister.png image file (uploaded by me on Commons). I don't think so @Vin09:. I think this is leading to vandalism. A newer version is uploaded almost everyday. This may lead to confusion for the reader and as well as the editor. The present version is not also not in agreement with the legend provided. The color green is not mentioned in the legend. There is no that need to change the version daily, it's been observed that sometimes User:Machli jal has changed it sometimes about 4 times a day. @Indopug: deliver a warning message on his talk page and if the user repeats the same, consider reporting the user to an administrator. Help finding sources?

I came across HooplaKidz with a related AfD, but I'm not really finding anything out there about this website/YT channel aside from it being mentioned briefly here and there, not really in any way that would show concrete notability. So far there are only two sources that can really show notability, a Parent's Choice Award and a review for one of their apps. The PCA is kind of iffy since the site has kind of become a little commercial over the years and they give out a ton more awards than they did back in the beginning, enough to where I'm not entirely sure that it'd be enough to keep the article on that basis alone. It looks like this originated in India, so I'm asking here for help in case there's any coverage that isn't in English and/or doesn't show up with the India newspapers search.

I figure that there are two outcomes for this, if there's no other coverage out there. This can be redirected to the applicable section for the network responsible for the channel/website or it could be taken to AfD and deleted. I'd prefer the latter, but this may not be entirely possible without an AfD.

Tokyogirl79 My experience is that major cultural institutions in India, including television shows, sometimes have no presence in English language media and I have been unable to find a way to access local language media, if any exists. Hi guys! I was wondering if anyone could do a search for Tamil language sourcing for the article Jumbulingam 3D. I found two reviews, enough for it to squeak by NFILM, but it could definitely stand to have a search done for any foreign language sourcing, given that the film isn't in English. Pinarayi Vijayan

Kerala's new CM, P. Vijayan's article has his birthday listed as 21 March 1944. But according to a news report today [1] As per official records, the senior marxist leader said his birthday was on March 21, 1944. But his correct birth date was May 24, 1945, he said, adding, he was not going to change the official records. Which one should we go by? Accuracy or official records? Train-the-Trainer programme was conceptualised in order to bridge the gap between wiki volunteers/enthusiasts who would like to conduct off reach activities and have been discouraged due to non availability of resources and support. Request for Assistance - Towns, Villages or other Places

I am working my way through the list of Indian Mutiny VC Recipients and filling in the gaps where unit names have been misspelled or names of towns, villages or other places of action have been entered into Wikipedia incorrectly or incompletely. My intention is to ensure that this page and the pages of the recipients do not contain any inaccurate, mis-attributed, misleading or missing data.

Choorpoorah John Adam Tytler of what is now 1 Gorkha Rifles fought a battle here on 10 February 1858. Also spelt "Choopoorah" in some books. During the mutiny, Tytler is said to have fought in Kumaon Hills and Rohilcund (Rohillakhand), and in Oude (Oudh) campaign of 1858-59. Syed Ahmad Khan, in his An account of the loyal Mahomedans of India, mentions one Zuqueera Khan who was posted at Jahanabad, Pilibhit. He fought the British at Nayneetal (Nainital), and was present at the "engagement of Churpoora and Sooltangunge (Sultanganj) in February 1858". Regarding the Admiral of the Fleet of the Indian Navy awarded by User:Anir1uph

I have recently come across the User Page of User:Strike Eagle. I observed that the "Admiral of the fleet of the Indian Navy" was awarded to StrikeEagle by @Anir1uph:. But it is completely against the Indian laws. It is a direct mention to the highest Indian Naval rank Admiral of the fleet of the Indian Navy, which can't be done, unless the rank is conferred. As per the constitution of India, the service ranks are to be granted by the President of India only. Unless the rank is granted, it must not be mentioned elsewhere. I have asked the User:Anir1uph to remove the same, but the user denied to do so. So I am approaching this Wiki-Project India talk page to suggest necessary solution to this. Recurrent issue: School lists

Indian articles are spread across with various types of school-lists and I thought maybe we should draw a consensus to bring uniformity in them. We have various lists with varied scopes and title formats like "List of schools in [town/state]", "List of educational institutes in [town/state]", "List of education institutes of [town/state]", " List of educational institutions in [town/state]", "List of schools and colleges in [town/state]", "List of educational facilities in [town/state]", "List of institutions of higher education in [town/state]", " List of universities and colleges in [town/state]", " List of universities and higher education colleges in [town/state]", "List of colleges in [town/state]" and probably more. This is talk about generic educational scope. We also have such lists forked out per the subject they provide education in. We need to bring uniformity over here. We have strictly been following that only blue-linked institutes be listed on such lists and that has helped in curtailing these lists and keeping them short. Over years I have boldly gone and merged many "town" lists into "state" lists. And I feel that we should get rid of all other formats and keep only "List of educational institutes in state" as basic format. It should be forked into "List of educational institutes in town" only as per our WP:CFORK criteria and WP:SIZERULE.

One of the issue which I too faced. I support your advice but needs others users also to express their own opinion. I would recommend List of educational institutes in state and also List of educational institutes in city is better. A city is more developed than a town. I'm a little hesitant to even get into this process, just because there are literally millions of schools that need to be sorted. My instinct is to start with state articles, and have subsidiary articles for cities within each state as dictated by the size rules, and break them down within a city as needed. I took a limited approach to this a few months ago, concentrating on existing lists for Mumbai, Pune etc. I think there is some discussion in the archives. IIRC, it was me who began the process of removing redlinks etc - I'm pleased if others are at least agreeing with that but, really, in the ideal world (which is a parallel universe to Wikipedia), I'd prefer to see all such lists deleted and just stick with categorisation. It won't work because inclusionists, especially from the Article Rescue Squadron, insist that pretty much everything that can be categorised should have a corresponding list. - Sitush (talk) 19:26, 25 May 2016 (UTC)

Problematic articles of a blocked user.

I just came across some BLPs which were created by the user Drkyt, who is now blocked. There seems to be a few issues regarding them.

Firstly, most of them might fail to meet the notability. e.g. P. P. Singh, A. S. Dalal, V. K. Agarwal, H. L. Verma, Amar Singh (Historian), M. S. Maan & Mamta Joshi don't seem notable. Their articles are also solely based on primary sources and contain unsourced claims.

Secondly, there's fabrication/falsification of sources. e.g. all the references of M. S. Maan mention his name as 'Mohinder Lal'. Similarly, 9 out of the total 10 references of Harbajan Singh Vedi don't even mention him. And the remaining one source just gives a passing mention of him. Thus nearly all of the article's claims regarding Vedi might be fictional.

So, it will be better if some experienced user(s) can scrutinize the above mentioned articles. BTW, here is the list of his twenty-odd articles. - NitinMlk (talk) 03:37, 30 May 2016 (UTC)

RfD on Hindi redirect

this RfD is on a Hindi redirect to Kalki Koechlin, but there's a problem which has arisen in the discussion where WP:INDICSCRIPT is conflicting with the main WP:MOS. The stopgap to keep the redir is that the Hindi name has been added to the infobox, but people not in a project making decisions that affect a project without input from the project sounds problematic to me, so I wanted to make you all aware of it, especially because the stopgap seems to be contrary to usual practice (today's FA Sonam Kapoor, for example). Why do we need devanagri redirects anyway? Are there people out there who can only type the devanagari for Kalki Koechlin or Bharat Ganarajya but are then able and happy to read an article written completely in English? Thanks Uanfala. But that's an essay and it confabulates foreign language with foreign scripts. Clearly, some foreign language words should have appropriate redirects but I don't see much point in redirecting the devanagri of kalki koechlin to her article. Would someone actually be searching for her name in devanagri? It is also instructive that the only example of a foreign script redirect is the hebrew for cookie monster. The hebrew word is Oogifletzet or something like that, not merely a rewrite of Cookie Monster in Hebrew. That does make a little sense because it is conceivable that a Hebrew speaker may not know the English equivalent. But exactly the same word? --regentspark (comment) 00:11, 10 June 2016 (UTC)
I don't think I'd be able to derive "Kalki Koechlin" from "कल्की केकलां", transcriptions aren't "rewrites". Redirects from foreign scripts might not be common for Indian ones (there are for example only about 200 categorised Hindi ones), but they're generally common (see for example Category:Redirects from Russian-language terms). Yes, RFOREIGN is just an essay and only points out that such redirects are acceptable (as opposed to recommended), and yes, the categories only demonstrate that the practice is widespread elsewhere. Of course, this project is free to chose its own guidelines, and I'm not trying to argue for or against, I was just giving a short answer to a question. If it were up to me, the job done by these foreign-language redirects would probably be handled in wikidata and not here. Uanfala (talk) 00:48, 10 June 2016 (UTC)

(a) I think there is some tool somewhere to check past articles in a category. Where can I find it?
(b) To not repeat it again, I would prefer to mention these places in some article in prose or list format. As the list is not quite large I don't think List of reportedly haunted locations in India is needed yet unlike how other countries have. Zakhm

There is a page for a Zakhm (1989 film) starring Neelam. Neelam Kothari's page lists a 1990 film called Zakhm, but links to a 1998 film by that name. Has anyone seen one or all of these films? Citing information obtained through RTI application

How to cite the information that is obtained by filing a RTI (Right of Information) application in India. About RTI: Right to Information Act was passed by the Indian Government in 2005 to make the information about the functioning and on going and happened scenarios in the Government available to the public that can de-classified. If we file an application through (https://rtionline.gov.in), the respective government department releases the information to the applicant after some formalities. As this information is true, it can be used to develop several articles on Wikipedia regarding India. My question is how can one cite this information?

@Krishna Chaitanya Velaga: I am not sure of the exact procedures and if there exists any specific templates for this all. But you may start with a note on the talk writing about the content of the subject RTI. You may also send the RTI file to WP:OTRS and then OTRS volunteers will come to the article's talk page with the standard template giving notice of the OTRS number; for example like its present at Talk:Details of a Sunset. You may then ask the volunteer who placed the OTRS notice on talk page to verify that the OTRS does contain information that you previously had posted on the talk page.
I have previously seen OTRS being referred to as a reference within an article just like any other normal external link. But that’s a rare things and I can't find out any example now. Try looking for that and then you can give an in-line reference too. @Krishna Chaitanya Velaga: Consider options to host files like this at the Internet Archive. The Internet Archive will host any files which you have the right to share, regardless of the copyright of those files. With government documents in India, a person making an RTI might not get copyright to those files, but still, the purpose of RTI is to grant a right to share and discuss the content. In Wikimedia projects the legal and social infrastructure to keep files like that is not available, but I think in Internet Archive, they host such things. @Krishna Chaitanya Velaga: The answer to that is unrelated to the upload. The relevant policy is WP:PRIMARY and not doing original research on Wikipedia. If, for example, you did an RTI to find that it cost 10 crore to remodel a railway station, then Wikipedia still would not allow reporting that information unless a journalist or research first published the topic. It is not allowed to present primary information on Wikipedia in an attempt to make it seem more significant.
Some time ago I found legal documents from the Devyani Khobragade incident and tried to share those on Wikipedia. Many people objected that by sharing the original legal documents, that is like a sort of journalism, and not appropriate for Wikipedia. That was not my intent but maybe it was a problem, and it was a sensitive issue. It takes thought and care to share primary documents without being biased. Krishna Chaitanya Velaga It depends on how much time you have and what your goal is. There probably will be no quick answer for you anywhere.

  1. If you have a goal of sharing documents online, then I think the quickest and easiest way to do that is Internet Archive, but ask their community first
  2. If your goal is connecting the documents you share to Wikipedia articles, then I think the fastest way to do that is by links to the Internet Archive files where they are uploaded. This at least connects Wikipedia and those files
  3. If you want basic facts in Wikipedia articles from these files, then you might try sharing a few, then discussing again when you have live examples. There are lots of things that you might share, but it is hard to discuss this without seeing the files you got through RTI and what you want to share
  4. In the most complicated case, the documents from RTI would need interpretation. If that is so, then the files need to be uploaded, then you would have to get a journalist, researcher, or respected blogger to review them. Then you could summarize their review in Wikipedia, which is allowed, so that you are not citing the RTI-given documents directly.

I suggest doing one thing as an example then asking again for review and support. So far as I know, no one in all of India has ever tried to cite a document from RTI on Wikipedia. It seems like an interesting thing to do with historical significance, and I think a lot of people in Wikipedia would like to see someone try to do this in the right way.   • (ec)I think it depends on what you want to cite. Assuming that all documents released under RTI are primary sources, you can only use them to support assertions of fact. For example, if a document from the Bridge Construction Authority says "the bridge was constructed at a cost of Rs. 2 billion", you could say "According to the Bridge Construction Authority, the cost of the bridge was Rs. 2 billion". You cannot assert that the bridge cost Rs. 2 billion without the according to part unless you find a reliable secondary source that verifies the Rs. 2 billion. And, if a reliable secondary source exists that says that the bridge actually cost Rs. 4 billion, then you shouldn't use the primary source number at all. And, I would not suggest creating articles that are based entirely on primary sources. If no reliable secondary source has covered a topic, then it is likely not notable. --regentspark (comment) 15:16, 23 May 2016 (UTC)

In 2010 I looked everywhere in libraries to try to find any record of the people who held top Indian government posts. I failed - I searched databases, books, and asked whatever librarians and professors that I could. Websites did not have the information and it seemed impossible to get. It seems that with RTI you have found the way to get this information, and maybe publish it and make it available for the first time ever. I am ready to add the data but the problem is I am not sure that if this is valid reference. So, I have started this discussion. I fear that if that is not a valid source and what if it is tagged for cleanup? And Thank You for interest in using the RTI act but as of now as per Section 3 of RTI Act, 2005, the facility is extended only to the citizens of India. I support the idea of citing these. In the simplest case, they could be cited with only a name of the document and a link to its online version archived anywhere else online. Promotion in College articles

Just came across S.R. Institute of Management & Technology. The "Infrastructure" section lists things like Smart Classrooms, Advance Computing Centre, Placement Cell etc. which make the whole article very promotional in nature. Award ribbons in infobox

Hey all, I posted this query at WikiProject Biography, but thought I'd ask here: I'm curious if there's existing consensus for usage of award ribbons in biographical infoboxes. I notice a number of biographies on Indian people that contain some version of the following:

| awards = Padma Vibhushan 2015 Padma Bhushan 1991 Nishan-e-Imtiaz 1997

It's not exactly widespread, (about 40 uses of the Padma Bhushan ribbon as of this note) but before I remove them I wanted to see if this is normal. I have found infoboxes of articles relating to Indians born during the British Raj saying 'Born: British India'. However, it must be noted that India was officially known as the Indian Empire during British Governance from 1857 to 1947. Passports to all citizens were issued under the state 'Indian Empire'. This article: British Indian passport confirms it. The article contains images of the passport issued during the time. Another source to establish this is cited.[1]

Active participation is invited in this discussion, so that we arrive at a consensus soon and replace the term 'British India' in the infoboxes with the official name, which was Indian Empire. As RegentsPark points out, consensus was already reached after exhaustive discussion among users who were well aware of the existence of the "British Indian Empire" passport. These terms are quite simple, though their incorrect use causes much confusion. British Indian Empire was the formal name for India under the British Raj. It was not used in all contexts, and in formal contexts, it came to be used only after 1876, when Queen Victoria was crowned Empress of India, not in 1858, when the British Raj began (at the end of the Indian Rebellion). The common contemporaneous term for India under the British Raj was simply "India."
India under the British Raj consisted of two regions (a) British India = Presidencies and provinces of British India = regions directly administered by the British. Cities such as Bombay, Calcutta, or Madras, belonged to British India; (b) Princely states = regions nominally ruled by Indian rulers under the suzerainty of the British, i.e. only indirectly ruled by the British. Cities such as Jaipur or Mysore belonged to Princely States. In the case of Nehru, who was born in Allahabad, which was in UP=United Provinces of Agra and Oudh, and directly administered by the British, we can say, "Nehru was born in Allahabad, British India," but in the case of Gandhi, who was born in Porbandar, a princely state, we cannot say: "Gandhi was born in Porbandar, Kathiawar Agency, British India;" however, we can say either "Gandhi was born in Porbandar, Kathiawar Agency, [[British Raj|British Indian Empire]] or, my preference, simply, "Gandhi was born in Porbandar, Kathiawar Agency, [[British Raj|India]] The term "Indian Empire," is ambiguous, as it can refer to earlier empires, such as Sikh Empire, Maratha Empire, etc. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 13:21, 1 July 2016 (UTC)

I am sort of late on this, but if someone was born in the Dominion of India, would simply [[India]] be suitable or would it have to be [[Dominion of India|India]]? Generally, I notice that in other articles, it links to the specific era of the country (E.g. Aryeh Neier). Wouldn't it be fine if it was just [[Germany]] at that article instead of [[Nazi Germany]] since Berlin is today and was then still part of what is called "Germany" and because the information at the Germany article is not restricted to just the modern Federal Republic of Germany but also to states from the past? Help finding sources?

I was wondering if anyone could look for Hindi language sources for an actress, Ishita Ganguly. The article was turned into a redirect after an AfD, but it seems like there should be more coverage out there - likely not in English. I was able to find some coverage, but it's predominantly for her show Shastri Sisters.

Can anyone do a search and see if you can find anything else? There's a new editor (Shilam singh) that's interested in helping, but I wanted to get some help from here as well, just in case. Help with articles?

Hi! I'm writing here for a bit of help again. We have a new editor who has been creating some of pages around Dutta families and I think that there's a high chance that he's a part of these families, although I'm not entirely certain. In any case, at least one of the articles he's written is clearly non-notable, as it's a self-published book, and the others look non-notable offhand since they're based almost entirely on self-published sources (such as the one non-notable book). One of the articles is up for AfD at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Dutta Chaudhuri Chronicles and is almost certainly going to be deleted, but I'd like someone to take a look at the other articles just in case there's more coverage in another language.

The articles are as follows:

  1. Srimanta Dutta Chaudhury
  2. Dutta Vansa Mala Update: redirected
  3. Dutta Chaudhuri Chronicles (up for AfD)
  4. Andul Dutta Chaudhury Family
  5. Akshay Chandra Chaudhury

I'm also concerned that he's trying to insert the self-published source into other articles like he did with this edit. It also looks like they tried to add various other SPS into the article for Basanta Choudhury. I've removed them, but I think that they might need someone to help guide them since I'm getting increasingly more concerned that they're here to promote this self-published work.

Some of the articles like Srimanta Dutta Chaudhury and Akshay Chandra Chaudhury look like they might pass notability guidelines, but the sourcing is incredibly poor, as it's almost entirely SPS or links to Facebook. In one article they actually try to source it with an e-mail address. I'm tempted to just take them all to AfD and let it get sorted out there, but I thought that I'd try here first just in case. New contributor help needed

Peter Khoda (talk · contribs) has twice inserted copyright violations at Baisla. I reverted both and left the standard templates. I'm not 100% sure that the source of the copied content is reliable, otherwise I might have paraphrased it. They then returned with some more information and provided three citations but none appear to be reliable. I reverted again and left a note. If I leave any more comments on their talk page then I think they're going to get very fed up of me, and if they try again any time soon then both of us will likely go over 3RR. If Kannada: ಅರೆ ಭಾಷೆ is correct then it would be Bhashe as ಬ is "ba" and ಭ is "bha". That said, transliterations of Dravidian languages isn't often as direct as there are a lot of loan or derived words from Sanskrit and this is likely one of those, which means "bha" is more likely. —SpacemanSpiff 14:55, 22 July 2016 (UTC)

Benares College

Which institution would have been known as Benares College in 1878? I suspect Benares Sanskrit University because the Benares Hindu University didn't exist then. However, the BSU article seems to say that all faculty would be familiar with Sanskrit but my man - John Nesfield - almost certainly was not and he doesn't appear in that article's list of principals even though he certainly was principal of Benares College. The early 18th-century

I have been doing a little work on articles on India in the early 18th century. I came across mentions of Dilawar ‘Ali Khan (sometimes written as Sayyid Dilawar 'Ali Khan) who was a Mughal General killed in battle with Qamar-ud-din Khan, Asif Jah I in 1719 or 1720. I am trying to figure out if there is any way to find information on him beyond his death in battle. List of state leaders by year

I have tried to put lots of heads of various states in what is now India onto the List of state leaders in 1759. I have well over 100. However I have done few other years, and in the 17th century there may be some years when the Mughal Emperor is not listed, and the only 3 countries listed for Asia are Japan, Korea and China. Right now for some years in the 17th and 18th century we have listed the head of every stateledt in Holy Roman Empire, but not even the largest leaders in what is now India. List of state leaders in 1719 might be an example of the disparity, but not the worst. I have done some work on this, but it would help if other people expanded these lists as well.John Pack Lambert (talk) 04:20, 28 July 2016 (UTC)

Help with Bollywood film

High temperatures here in Valencia.

Hi! I'm Francesc and I'm from Valencia. Right now a Bollywood film is being recorded in my city. I've found the action and I've made photos, which will be uploaded in Commons. As far I know, this film has some stars from this country, as stated by one of the local Catalan-speaking people in the project, who helped me. I've readen in press that the films still has no name and is identifyied as "Number 8 production". I'll need help to identify the people I took pictures of. It could be that this man is Raju Sundaram? His name appeared in press. The film is produced by Namdamuri Tharaka Ramarao Arts. Articles for India without Template:WikiProject India

I notice there are a lot of articles relating to India that don't have the banner. A quick scan of Category:India stubs shows a couple hundred alone. Rather than manually add the template to each and every one, is there an easier way? Maybe a program like Twinkle that does WikiProject assessments? Or maybe some way to do a mass update? I didn't remove the lists or unassessed articles and didn't realize the the categories had some non India articles in it under religion. So those are all removed. Why Rio Olympics 2016 Matters for India

While India struggled to win medals, ending its tally with just two medals, there had been some spectacular performances. Abhinav Bindra, Jitu Rai were only marginally short at conceiving medals, while Saina-Bopana reached till the Bronze medal match, Depika Kumari lost to the world's best. At the most, Indian Hockey contingent reached the knock-out stage after so many years.

Request for comment on grant request

This message is a sort of spam. This is the first place I am posting this message, and if I post anything similar, it would only be in 3 places maximum.

A colleague who teaches at a language institute in India is requesting a grant from the Wikimedia Foundation for USD $2000 to do a series of in-person wiki events in Delhi. I had suggested that they design a project just because I want more small wiki events to happen throughout India. I am posting here to request that anyone comment on the project proposal at

The project is to bring poems of Amir Khusrow into Wikimedia projects, translate them, and to integrate the texts into Wikipedia articles including here at English Wikipedia. In general, I wish that lots of organizations around India would do more to bring classic texts into Wikimedia projects, and my wish is for this project to establish a model for other organizations to copy. Sri Sri Sri Guru Viswa Sphoorthi

A recently created article about an Indian yogi, full of unencyclopedic unsourced content and non-neutral language. Now I could remove approx. 95 percent of the article or even AfD it, but it would be great if someone more knowledgeable about Indian culture and religion could have a look at it first please. Is this yogi notable to begin with? Is there any chance to salvage a stub? I doubt it, but without any knowledge in the topic it's hard to tell of course. Cults of personality

There have recently been several edits to List of cults of personality about Indian leaders. I do not feel competent to judge the POV of the edits or the quality of the sourcing. My preference for this article is to stick to academic sources that describe in detail the most infamous cases – Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Ceaușescu, Duvalier, etc – yet the article seems to be growing with what I suspect may be undue emphasis. More eyes would be good. In particular, I do not know whether it is fringe to label Indian leaders as having a cult of personality. NinjaRobotPirate (talk) 19:29, 2 September 2016 (UTC)

Mother Teresa

Mother Teresa held Indian citizenship and as a result, I added the word "Indian" after "Albanian", making the two hyphenated to read "Albanian-Indian" in the lede. Mother Teresa herself stated: "By blood, I am Albanian. By citizenship, an Indian. By faith, I am a Catholic nun" (Reference). Both the Missionaries of Charity and the Indian Government identify Mother Teresa as an Indian (Reference). Despite a few references with this quote, there are some users who randomly remove her citizenship from the lede. I think to represent both points of view, having both "Albanian" and "Indian" in the lede is a good compromise. Comments requested please: Naming conventions for bilingual Indian films

Short story: It seems like more Indian films are being filmed in multiple languages at once (ostensibly to avoid entertainment taxes?). There was a big kerfuffle at Talk:Baahubali about a year and a half ago because the pro-Telugu folks wanted to make it clear that this was a Telugu industry film, when the film was simultaneously produced in Telugu and Tamil.

What's the best way to deal with films like Mudinja Ivana Pudi, which appears to have been produced in Tamil and Kannada. How do we decide what the article title should be? Do we file the film under Mudinja Ivana Pudi or Kotigobba 2? Is the ethnic film "industry" that produced it a factor worth considering? Is there a smarter way to go about this? Some films are produced in one language and then dubbed another. In those cases, clearly, the title can be in the language of the original production.
If a film is simultaneously shot in two languages (a "bilingual film") then it may be best for the page title to be in both the languages in the "X / Y" format. The ethnic film industry can give a slight edge to one language over the other, e.g., in writing "X / Y" rather than "Y / X", but banishing Y altogether from the page title can be cause for trouble. The 10,000 Challenge

Hi, I wondered if anybody would be interested in launching Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge (India) in the new year based on Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea would be to make it an ongoing goal but have state contests along the way with prizes to fuel more production. Wasn't there a Bengal contest a few weeks ago? That sort of thing could all count towards the 10,000 improvement goal. I think a contest for Indian cinema might also potentially attract a lot of interest, and we could target older films and actors. If so I can help set something up later in the month but we would need somebody in India to run the contests.   • I think that even simply offering barnstars and such might be sufficient incentive, and logistically easier. I do think, though, that the "improvements" are going to need a greater degree of scrutiny than the example you linked. Without making any generalizations about the editor body, this topic area has been prone in the past to SPAs, editors with agendas, and other problem children: so monitoring the improvements might be a good idea. We have plenty of decent editors, too, so I don't imagine that setting up a process that involves a little more scrutiny would be a problem. Vanamonde (talk) 17:25, 4 September 2016 (UTC)

Overlinking and overcapitalisation

I quickly review and "gnome" edit articles in certain categories (artist, writer, musician, etc) and find a lot of subcontinent-related articles with rafts of overcapping and overlinking. Occasionally I notify on an editor's talkpage, always thanking for their work, and reminding them of our guidelines.

Please note that professions and occupations are not normally linked or capitalised, even in the infobox. Nor are well-known country-names (like India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh), especially if a town or city is bunched with the country-name (maybe link the town or city only).

Years, dates, and common terms are generally not linked on the English Wikipedia.

I'm also finding an occasional tendency to pump up with the odd "peacock" wording ... "X is a popular politician", an award-winning actor. Encyclopedic style on en.WP favours a more neutral, fact-based approach.

@Tony1: thanks for your note. While you are quite correct in that these are common problems, I'd suggest that they are much more the product of bit-part editors unfamiliar with our guidelines (and often with an agenda of some kind), who are therefor unlikely to watch this noticeboard. It might do more good to ask the folks here to watch out for, and correct, the problems you pointed out: and I'm sure many folks are already aware of them. @Sitush: the Hindi source says that his name was "Ranchordas Rabari", and makes no specific mention about the caste (as you know, it doesn't necessarily mean that he belonged to the Rabari community, but with a lot of North Indian people, that is indeed the case). Ymblanter: youtube is useless in this regard, and "cobrapost" is rather dodgy: but NDTV is generally fine, and the incident has received widespread coverage elsewhere: see [6], [7], [8], [9] and many more that are easily found. @Faizhaider: I was more objecting to a dab, I might support a merge. The primary topic for "Snoopgate" appears to be the Gujarat issue; as I mentioned on the talk page, the only sources referring to the NSA surveillance as "Snoopgate" I could find were quoting the title of a Newsweek article. The redirect was practically unused until now, which suggests most readers will not be searching for the NSA surveillance issues. The page creator, User:Irfannaseefp, could probably use some guidance on RS; the sourcing is pretty abysmal as it stands.—0xF8E8 (talk) 21:08, 19 September 2016 (UTC)

Hi -- I am currently editing the "Sex education in India" article. I would like to focus on delineating between family planning and HIV / AIDS prevention education. Would some be able to direct me to resources that would outline the current government and community efforts that are being used to drive this education? Venkam Finding sources is not easy. About three years ago I searched for whatever was published and posted online by health organizations funded by central and state government in India. I did not find anything that I thought was a good research publication. This does not mean that no good research is available, but just that if there is research it was not at that time easy to find online.
It is difficult to come to Wikipedia with an advance agenda and know what you will edit. Since Wikipedia is a reflection of the sources you find, I recommend searching first for the most interesting publications you can find, then deciding what to edit based what is available in the sources you find. Category:Bus stations in Andhra Pradesh

Does every bus stop linked in this category deserve to have an article of its own. Even if needs to exist here why not create 1 article with all of them? I need help! VarunFEB2003 12:17, 14 September 2016 (UTC)

I don't see too much of a problem with each of them having their own article as long as they are not for each and every village or small town. Primarily because most of these are fairly large towns, in principle I think it's fine, because any expansions/news are more likely to be covered by reliable media. However if a case should be made for condensing them, the material should probably go to the respective city/town articles (I think this is also a good option, because currently, some of the town articles are not in very good shape, and this could help structurally consolidate those articles better). A list could be made out of the bus stations with certain criteria for inclusion in the list. MikeLynch (talk) 12:26, 14 September 2016 (UTC)
VarunFEB2003 New York City has 469 stations for its train and I think every one of them has a Wikipedia article. The lists are at New_York_City_Subway_stations#Complete_lists_of_stations. Many people like and use articles about bus and train stations, but the problem is that Wikipedia is supposed to be a reflection of published reliable sources. For the articles being made that you are describing, many of them are not citing any source at all. Articles which do not cite sources are deleted on Wikipedia for being non-notable.

National Highway 108 (India)(Old Numbering)

Please see List of National Highways in India for the conventions for the new numbering scheme. The old numbering was probably ad hoc. The new number of 108 (old numbering) is likely to be highway 134, but I wouldn't know for sure. Cheers, Kautilya3 (talk) 23:53, 19 September 2016 (UTC)

If the new 108 is in Mizoram, then someone needs to look at List of National Highways in India as well. According to that article, NH 34 intersects with NH108 but that's not possible if 108 is in the north east. Proposal for election of coordinators for the project

WikiProject India is one of the largest project group on English Wikipedia with over 1,50,000 article count and considerable no of FAs, FLs and good articles. Till now, the group performed under no definite leadership or coordination. I propose for conduction of an election to elect the coordinators and a lead coordinator (highest vote count). Doing so, will the help the members and also the group to work more consistently than it is now. We have many experienced and acclaimed editors such as Titodutta, SpacemanSpiff, Vanamonde93, Dharmadhyaksha, Sitush, GSS-1987, Vin09, Strike Eagle, AKS.9955, Yash! etc. and many others who have significantly contributed to this project can be nominated and subsequently elected. Election shall be held for fixed term. Definite structure and procedures must be discussed and formulated before the system is adopted. They may adopted from the Military history project, which started the practice long back. Please see their co-ordination page, their discussion for project coordinators (dated around 2006), election pages (2015, 2014 etc.). Please voice your opinion regarding the proposal. This (and other geographic) wikiprojects function quite differently from MILHIST. That is a quality focused project while we are focused on getting the basics right across a large quantity of articles. Therefore the kind of work differs significantly. The problems here are more around the unstoppable proliferation of sub pet projects and stuff which no amount of consensus here has been able to stop. As for the maintenance task coordinators, this one has had people pick up individual tasks for a long time and that seems to work well. e.g. Ganesh's village articles, Tito's and (a couple of others) more recent WP tagging of talk pages and stuff. More than any coordinators, at this point I think we need something focused on culling that {{WikiProject India}} banner and getting rid of all the dubious or single person sub projects so that we even have a proper scope for this project. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 06:50, 2 September 2016 (UTC)
@SpacemanSpiff: I agree with you that the working of this project is different from that of MILHIST. But having coordinators will definitely helo us to work us better, for example, the assessment of articles will pickup good improvement. And also the members will have some official to contact if there is some problem, regarding the project, which is not available now. Regarding {{WikiProject India}}, I agree with you hat there are many groups /projects having participants less than 5 members and no work has been done for months.   • This is still a small WikiProject with few participants. Consider the wikiproject watchers report- the military history project has 10 times the number of people watching it as compared to India. By the changes report, it gets 15 times the number of edits. India is still a small project and I am not aware of people who come here looking for the support of a leader. Instead of leadership, I think it would be more useful just to have more peer to peer user support as equals, so that more people feel that they can join and take their own leadership roles.   • I think some sort of initiative might be a good idea. There is, as KCV points out above, a core set of editors with the experience necessary to curate articles. Meanwhile, the Indian initiative is scattered across the place with many important areas relatively untouched. I don't think a large initiative will work (think of the various collaboration initiatives that have failed in the past) but maintaining short lists of important articles that need to be worked on, getting out information (AfDs, GA or FA nominees, etc.) in a less passive form, etc. might be helpful. A lighter touch focusing on information rather than a set of initiatives that will likely end up failing. --regentspark (comment) 14:59, 2 September 2016 (UTC)
@Bluerasberry: Not the number of the watchers, but the project counts almost around 400 active members, and I think it is good count. 400 members with no definite organizational structure is worth thinking. Whether it is big or small, having coordinators will definitely help the project to do better more than it is now. It is said that a team of ten with a leader is far better than a team of unleaded twenty. So the need is clear. However, the structure may be different from that of MILHIS, something like having a group 10 members under the title coordination committee etc. And you see that MILHIS started this tradition of having coordinators in 2006, 10 years ago, in the times when some us even weren't on Wiki. MILHIS hardly had 200-300 members then. But today is one of the biggest and most acclaimed Wikiprojects with its own A-class assessment (very few project have A-class assessment) ,and I feel that coordination played a significant role in this evolution. @Vin09: Thanks for your support. We don't appoint for a particular category of articles. You are appointed by the vote count you get in the election. Even in MILHIS coordinators work on topics of their interest; of some country or of some wars etc. but they look over overall.   • I've held off commenting here for a while, because honestly I'm somewhat torn. I think the structure of the project needs to be driven both by its scope (in this case, vast, but with masses of poor-quality articles) and by the character of the participating editors (in this case, a very wide range of experience and competence, and a wide variation in dedication/interpretation of core policies). While I don't think coordinators are a bad thing per se, I really don't see the idea working here. Editors with experience, and who are well-versed in policy, don't need coordination given the nature of the articles we deal with: editors without one of those attributes are not amenable to coordination anyway. There are some variants of the idea which might have some use. [[regentspark made suggestions above that I would support: I particularly think that have a table that aggregates articles by importance on the one hand and quality on the other might be especially useful, as it would allow high-priority articles to be quickly identified. A list of experienced editors willing to give articles a quick once-over would also be helpful. Likewise, it might also help to put together guidelines on some common issues: reliability of common sources, guidelines w.r.t. notability in a South Asian context, etc: but that's a whole other can of worms. Nallacheruvu

At present, our article on Nallacheruvu describes it as being in the Anantapur district — however, on two separate occasions in the past year, some anonymous editor has tried to recategorize it as being in East Godavari district instead, both times with a misspelled category link that bounced it onto the uncategorized articles list. Can somebody with more expertise in Indian topics than I've got look into this and determine whether (a) the existing category is correct and the IPs are vandals who need to be blocked, (b) the existing category is wrong and the place is in East Godavari instead of Anantapur, or (c) Anantapur and East Godavari both have villages called Nallacheruvu and we need to convert this to a disambiguation page instead? This can't solely be a question of whether we already have an article about another Nallacheruvu or not — people are actively WP:DISRUPTing the article about this one. Sadly the list of cities in Andhra does not has references for Anantapur and East-Godavari districts to cross check its veracity. A little bit of googling shows evidence of the existence of the Nallacheruvu city with its own railway station too in Anantapur district.

How to order languages in infoboxes and elsewhere

Hey all, I've opened a discussion at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Film#Languages ordering in infobox and elsewhere. This pertains to how we should organize the list of languages for multi-lingual films (like Baahubali: The Beginning, 2.0, etc.) As you know, films are closely tied to ethnic film "industries", and there has been an uptick both in films produced in multiple languages, as well as arguments over how the languages should be ordered. Letter case problems

"I wrote about the problem [[10]], I was misunderstood.

I believe many Indian languages don't use cases, so many editors don't know how to use cases in English. I believe that somoene who belongs to such no-cases culture should explain the problem in a short text. @PamD: Both the Times of India & the National Institute of Open Schooling's regional website (check S. No. 216 here) mention it as 'Zila School'. So, 'Zila' is the correct official spelling in this case. BTW, you are right. It's a Zilla School. Hello friends, does anyone know anything about Scroll.in and have any thoughts on whether it is generally considered a reliable source? Our esteemed colleague Kailash29792 asked me my thoughts, but I don't know enough about the site to have an opinion, and I tend to lean toward "unreliable until proven innocent". This is part of a bigger project to create a more complete listing of reliable and unreliable sources for the Indian cinema task force. @Cyphoidbomb and Kailash29792: I did not know anything about the site, but I gave it a look and will share an opinion.
This seems to be a reliable news source. Supporting evidence is that articles are well-published with stable URLs, authors, and dates. An editor for the publication is named, so the articles seem to be managed in the context of a journalism organization. The articles seem to be based in fact, then the stories themselves provide the publication's own editorial perspective to interpret the facts. I see in some articles where pictures are used proper credit is given to copyright holders, and otherwise, other good journalism practices are being used.
Some supporting evidence that this is not a reliable source include the newness of the publication (founded about 2011), the fact that the publication seems to be cross-posting content from other publications with attribution but also without clearly stating what partnerships might exist as they do this, and that they have some low-quality sensational articles attributed to "scroll staff".
As with any source, it is reliable for claims within its field of expertise. If we are considering film reviews, this one for example seems like a fine film review with the publication's own criticism. If someone cited that review in a Wikipedia article then at a look, I would say that seems reasonable. Blue Rasberry (talk) 17:47, 20 October 2016 (UTC)

This particular one isn't of much value as unlike their other categories they don't have a large candidate pool. In contrast, the 2016 winner thewire.in has rather well established editorial policies, and I think that would pass RS muster in general. —SpacemanSpiff 11:01, 21 October 2016 (UTC)

I don't think the issue is that of being a startup. It's just that they don't really have an established editorial policy to back things up unlike thewire.in. Scroll got steam because of the wide range of content (specifically opinion pieces) that they featured. They do have very good copy editing practices unlike most mainstream media (with the exception of The Hindu) and that makes them stand out from the crowd. However, just take an article on their site and compare the topic to any newspaper or magazine and the difference is easy to understand: this is less facts and more opinion/interpretation. Therefore my point about WP:ATTRIBUTEPOV if the author is known in that field. (e.g. Take the Mirza-Manjrekar twitter spat. I like the Scroll's take on it, but it differs from the rest and it's almost entirely interpretation) —SpacemanSpiff 12:49, 22 October 2016 (UTC)

Per WP:RS: "News reporting" from well-established news outlets is generally considered to be reliable for statements of fact (though even the most reputable reporting sometimes contains errors). News reporting from less-established outlets is generally considered less reliable for statements of fact." A startup probably doesn't meet muster as a well-established news outlet. I'm not saying that they aren't going to be reliable, I just don't know that the totally hit all the benchmarks. On the other hand, I know that film articles are really suffering for lack of sources considered reliable, so maybe some leeway is necessary here. Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh

Hey guys, a few questions: 1) If Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh is Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Ji Insan, then what should the article be called? Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Ji Insan? His daughter is Honeypreet Insan, so I'm a little confused why his name stops at Singh. 2) Per WP:SURNAME How should he be referred to in the article? Singh, or Insan? Something else?

3) I notice that in his article, he's referred to as "Saint" and "Saint Dr." He has a "doctorate" in world records from what is obviously a diploma mill specializing in doctorates in world records. I assume that per WP:HONORIFICS we'd drop both of these honorifics, no? I mean, we don't refer to Bill Cosby as Dr. Cosby despite his many honorary doctorates. And "saint" seems somewhat fluffy. @GSS-1987: I've added it to my watchlist, but the Bigg Boss articles (and tons of other Indian TV articles) are a nightmare. I notice the obvious copyright violation notice on the page. @Indopug: I've semi-protected it for 3 days. Your first instinct should be to open discussion the first time you revert because it shows at least some attempt to identify and resolve the problems. (It's also a good idea to drop Talkback notices on IP editors talk pages, because IPs don't have watchlists.) The IP's change of the lead from indicating that Kunder is a film maker to "became noteworthy after he married well-known Bollywood choreographer and film director Farah Khan" is clearly disruptive though, as it replaces a fact with an editorial. Page name?

What should be the page name for Medchal–Malkajgiri district. Is it Medchal district or Medchal-Malkajgiri district? References

  • dist website - other districts too has similar titles whose names got changed and the website names were not.
  • state website - which has malkajgiri in map and medchal in list
  • Official G.O. - some pages as medchal and the present title was also mentioned.

Tito, et al. could I please trouble you guys to look at Vijayakanth#Controversy? A user with limited English skills has attempted to describe some of the controversies surrounding the subject, but I can't really make heads or tails of what he's trying to say. It started out with some odd phrasing about the subject being "slammed" and trolled. Some of that was cleaned up but I'm concerned that we're heading into some WP:BLPCRIME concerns. I'm not familiar with this sort of stuff, so I'm hoping that you sharpshooters can figure out what is or isn't worth covering in the article. Sorry for the work, but I don't know what else to do.   • @Titodutta and Cyphoidbomb: I'm not sure if this is the locus of the dispute, but honestly I don't think there should be a controversy section. I think any encyclopedic material in the controversy section should be incorporated elsewhere. There's a few reasons for this. First, segregating critical material in a single section has the effect of whitewashing other sections, which is a neutrality issue. Second, the section itself becomes a POV magnet: everybody with an axe to grind gravitates there. Third, it is very difficult to figure out due weight in a controversy section, because ideally you want to be weighing coverage of any criticism against the coverage that any specific incident has gotten, as opposed to weighing controversy of the subject as a whole against other aspects of the subject as a whole. @NitinMlk: They really could work on sprucing up their site so it doesn't look like every other cookie-cutter blog... And I thought the site was "Tha Indian", and I thought "geez how professional" but I see that it's a portmanteau of Thai and Indian. At first I was concerned that this was yet another content scraper, and I was skeptical that IANS actually wrote the content, and I was concerned that the content might constitute a copyright violation, but after reading their About Us page, they seem to explain that they have republication rights. They acknowledge having an editor-in-chief (although I know nothing about that person) and they claim to produce unique stories, although I clicked on at least a dozen links in the Hot Now and Latest News sidebars and didn't see anything that was uniquely created. However after clicking on their Top Stories link, I see stuff like this, which is really no better than anyone else's blog post. Same here (where they misspell Partridge in the last sentence) and this is a strange article about the Denzel Washington film John Q that doesn't inspire confidence that they're not just making up the facts. Like, they're saying that the director and producer denied that the film is based on a real-life event, but what, I'm supposed to believe that the director and producer sat down with Thaindian.com to get the scoop? Anyway, for the time being, I'd probably cautiously consider them "partially reliable" for their syndicated content only and see how that goes. I invite other opinions, though. One of the requirements of WP:RS is that the organization should have an established reputation for fact-checking and accuracy. I don't think that any of us have heard of Thaindian, so I think it's far less likely that they have an established reputation. Agreed. There was nothing broken that needed fixing. The page view stats are available from the Page information link on the side of the page, and if the graph is what you want to see, I'd probably consider proposing at one of the Village Pumps (maybe Proposals?) that it be added to the layout of the Page information template, i.e. when you click this it appears somewhere. But I don't see why suddenly scores of Indian articles would suddenly be hungry for this information. To make it easier for paid editors and spammers to see which pages are most likely to generate the best revenue? Rhetorical, of course, but this is data that I've only accessed a dozen or so times in six years and 86,000 edits. What value does it have in day-to-day editing?
