ENGVAR[edit]
I don't think we have ever had anything here explicitly referencing WP:ENGVAR (see also Wikipedia talk:Category names/Archive 10#ENGVAR). If I were to add something, it would probably these couple of points:
The national varieties of English guidelines apply to each individual category, independent of the way they are connected to other categories. In particular:
- If a category has strong ties to a particular English-speaking nation, then its name should use that nation's variety of English. This includes each individual subcategory by country and subcategory by nationality (for example, compare Category:Footballers in the United Kingdom with Category:Soccer players in the United States).
- Eponymous categories and topic categories should use the same variety of English as their respective main articles.

Populated places[edit]
Some folks have required a decade old decision to be affirmed.
Category:Settlements was renamed to Category:Populated places:
United States Geological Survey: Cities, towns and other entities with human habitation are classified as populated places in the context of the BGN and GNIS.

We need to update this and maybe look at further revision[edit]
I noticed that this says to use "Austro-Hungarian foos". There was a decision to actually start using people from Austria-Hungary. I am wondering at the same time if all the current ones are justified. I think we have to aim for clarity. With Austro-Hungarian I have seen that term used to describe someone who was a national or descendant of nationals of Austria who was resident in Hungary, either as an immigrant or by ethnic descent, like the term Irish-American or German-American is used. I have to also wonder if some current terms are so obscure or conflicted that it makes sense to use them. For example we use New Zealand foo, because their is no easily accepted actual demonym. I am wondering if some other places is the demonym form actually common enough to justify its use in category names. [[Seychelles]] is one place I have to admit that I am not convinced that it is commonly used enough for us to reasonable expect readers to recognize it, and so I think Seycehlles people/People from Seychelles is better. With Nigeria and Niger, I also think a much clear solution would be to use Nigeria People and Niger People or people from Nigeria/People from Niger. The current usage is really imposing on those from Niger a demonym derived from French which is not at all what would be used as the demonym in English, and I have seen writers say this is a case of imposing a French word on English because the names are so similar in English. I think a better solution would be to chose names for those categories that are more clear.John Pack Lambert (talk) 12:28, 15 May 2023 (UTC)
Voter education[edit]
