Neutrality

What criteria do you use for recruiting members for this task force?

Because a number of your members have made very controversial edits adding things such 'as the fetis cannot feel pain' to the abortion page(in an attempt to push their view), editing the feminazi page to add things such as "it's used by men because men hate women and want to undermine all progress they have made"

Wouldn't it make sense to actually recuit people who are actually neutral for such a task force?

I followed the edits of a member(which can only be described as severe hackery, and then I noticed in responce to it they get invited here.

Gender and religion

Another editor and I have been working on the gender and religion article. I think we've improved it quite a bit, but I'd love to see more than two pairs of eyes on it. Anyone want to come take a look? It could especially use opinions on the best structure of the article, and information about non-Abrahamic religions. Where to add material?

Apologies if this is not the right place to ask this, but I have come across some survey statistics in the 2005 Ethiopian Demographic & Health Survey about the roles of men & women in Ethiopian society. Gynoid warring

Can editors take a look at this article (and its recent history). An editor there keeps moving all critical and gender discusion to a separate section, or out-right deleting it. As he has never added any information or citations, i have no idea what he think the article should be about, but all the sources i've read show that gender issues are the main aspect of this topic, and are the only reason it exists as a separate article, rather than being a section in Android.

Somemore eyes would be great. I was planning to get this to GA, but progress has stopped as i have to keep reverting deletion of cited material, and have to stop at 3 reverts.08:32, 27 March 2009 (UTC)

Questioning the "Gender Neutrality" of this Project

Why is it this project is Woman/Feminism focused? It has a total of 3 (one not even created) topics related to Men, which makes up the other half of "Gender Studies". The Sheila Jeffreys page has had attacks and insults added to it repeatedly over the last several days. I have had to remove them three times over now. Other editors, please take a look at the history of this page and remove the attacks, as they are likely to be added again and again. Hello. The "to do" list said copyedit Feminism (which sorry to say I can't do). But that article presents the "three wave" idea. There is no article on the second wave which links instead to Feminist Movement in the United States. Also would anyone agree that leaves out Simone de Beauvoir? There's the section on French feminism but it concerns the 1970s and Kristeva. I moved up The Second Sex to the beginning of the second wave. Following the advice of Cirt I post my question here: why don't you rename the page "Violence against women" in "gender based violence"? This is the correct definition because "is a manifestation of historically unequal power relations between men and women, which have led to domination over and discrimination against women by men and to the prevention of the full advancement of women, and that violence against women is one of the crucial social mechanisms by which women are forced into a subordinate position compared with men " (...), Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women, United Nations -General Assembly dic. 1993

Chrapliwy v. Uniroyal

This is a '82 case brought by US female factory workers under the '64 Civil Rights Act, suing for equal pay and representation. It was proposed for deletion. I've deprodded as my searches indicated notability, but I don't know enough about the case to edit the article. Can anyone at this project help improve it to avoid deletion? “Sex”

Currently, Wikipedia has no article about sex, in the sense of a sexual physiological endowment. The article “Sex” concerns itself with the sexual process. The article “Sex (disambiguation)” seems to confuse “gender” with sexual physiological endowment; in any even, it provides a link to “Gender” as ostensibly concerning a primary meaning of “sex”, but not to an article on sexual physiological endowment. —SlamDiego_←T 14:51, 3 December 2009 (UTC)

Okay, that's weird. At first I thought the article sex was about what I'd call "biological sex" -- the thing that, in humans, is about gonads and genitals and secondary sex characteristics. But it appears to be both about "having sex" in a broad sense, and about "biological sex"... It looks like the article about human biological sex is at Sex differences in humans. In some places, we seem to include biological sex as part of gender, calling it "biological gender" -- this is what the Gender article does. Having it hard to find is unacceptable.
“biological gender” as a term for physiological endowment would be the sort of bilge written by pseudo-scholars who create a veneer of sophistication by obfuscation.

This article could use some new eyes with expert knowledge/mediation/constructive input; I'm posting to several WikiProjects that seem relevant and to RfC. I have already done so on WP:Cleanup (other ideas just about where to seek help are also welcome). Article was created 06:51, 20 April 2004 by an IP. There's thirteen talk page archives and five Articles for Deletion discussions; there are 122 watchers and about 400 daily page views on average. sex segregation

This article seems to have got way off track. While it says it's about the separation of people along gender lines, someone seems to have added stuff about every form of sex descrimination, making it a (bad) fork of sexism. I have added citations and text from a number of articles and websites that focus on sex segregation in many forms, including its possible origins. DJ Clayworth (talk) has cut out every single one of them, removed text that was put in by other editors, and reverted the article back to a version three months earlier. All of this was done without discussion or consensus. I recommend that this text be put back into the article as it is pertinent and adds quality. I have reverted the article once after the other editor's cuts, but it was re-reverted, making the dispute requiring additional editors. Marshallsumter (talk) 15:42, 21 March 2010 (UTC)

I am concerned by something else. There is a web site http://www.dweec.com/dweecs.htm which lists DJ Clayworth and the tactics which he/she and others have used as a group to possibly censure Wikipedia. Does anyone else disagree with this title: Sarah Brown (wife of Gordon Brown)?

On the Talk page I've just said it is sexist and patronising beyond belief to have this title, because it suggests that this women is only definable by reference to her husband. Can you please leave your thoughts to have this moved to an alternate title? Wik idea 15:23, 31 March 2010 (UTC)

knowledgable editors needed ...

Here - the article on "Ssexual Orientation" needs work - couple of editors have recently pointed this out, but the discussion really needs fresh views. Currently the article is strongly biased toards psychology (and debates between psychologists and a fringe group promoted by Christians that claims that homosexuality is a psychological disorder). I have nothing against psychology, but it is only one approach ... the whole idea that sexual orientation may be socially constructed, or take fundamentally different forms in different cultures is missing (because claims that it is not innate and fixed are interpreted as promoting the views of that fringe group that says homosexuality can be remedied). And debates outside of academe are not covered, either. And the article is organized in such a way that it is hard to know even how these other views might be incorporated. In short, it needs attention. I am not looking for one hero to do a complete overhaul of the article; I am hoping that many different editors can work together, each making small changes, that will eventually turn this into something that reflects the full range of major approaches and views and explains differences and debates. Need expertise for the Janice Raymond article

It's 'incomplete' in more ways than one. The lead contains a long sentence saying that 'many feminists' disagree with Raymond on trans issues, but missing is any acknowledgement that some feminists indeed agree with Raymond. Biased editing at Janice Raymond

There appears to be a problem of biased editing at this article. I think the way it is written now is not in accord with NPOV or BLP. There is a biased sentence in the lead: "She has also written extensively about transsexualism, and her views on transgender have met with great controversy, as they are viewed by many as transphobic." merge Gynocracy into Matriarchy and Separatist feminism?

Proposals to merge the now-deleted Gynocracy article into the Matriarchy and Separatist feminism articles are under discussion, in the Gynocracy deletion review. The Gynocracy article was about women governing women and men, as described from the past or aspired to for the future. Some parts of the article discussed matriarchy, although none of the historical and aspirational descriptions were limited to mothers as the women governing, all being open to women generally. None were about feminist separatism, because men were among the governed, and not just briefly, and because this was not limited to separatism within the feminist movement or organizations, but were at a national level, although one possibility would be to include the content with an explanation that these cases are not strictly separatist or limited to feminist venues. New York Times article on Wikipedia gender bias

Project members might lke to note that The New York Times has publishedan article on the gender gap in Wikipedia's editor base and how it is affecting article quality. Written by Noam Cohen, it gives examples of how subjects dear to girls and women tend to be short while those dear to boys and men are voluminous. For example it points out that friendship bracelets likely to be of interest to teenage girls is limited to only four paragraphs , whereas baseball cards, more likely to be followed by boys is voluminous and includes a detailed chronological history of the subject. The entry on Sex and the City includes only a brief summary of each episode while the one on The Sopranos includes lengthy, detailed articles on each episode. It quotes Sue Gardner, executive director of the Wikimedia foundation, as saying how she has set a goal to raise the share of female contributors to 25 percent by 2015 from its present 13%. I aim to address broader issues of gender, empowerment, human capabilities, the effects increasing female influence in government, etc. One issue I am not addressing is gender beyond male/female (i.e., I will not be discussing transgender issues--transgender individuals in government, policies to increase the presence of or awareness regarding transgender issues). Requested Article: Women's Property Rights

I would like to propose an article about Women's property inheritance rights. There are currently no entries focusing on women's property or inheritance rights. I feel that these factors are importance in determining women’s living conditions as well as overall status within the family and community. Ownership and control over assets such as land and housing provide economic security. The gendered differences in land ownership and property inheritance between women and men is stark. Recent estimates show that women own only 1-2 percent of all titled land worldwide, although women make up an increasing proportion of the world’s formal labor force and heads of households.

Disputes over property, now afforded a monetary value, have grown more prevalent. There has been an observed shift in women's rights to inherit or ability to manage property. Due to the prevalence of patrilineal inheritance customs, both productive resources such as land and livestock and property such as household goods have ended up in the hands of men and not women. Consequently, when only men have rights of inheritance or family succession, it is women that have little opportunity to improve their overall status and living conditions within the family and community.

Thus, I would like to propose an entry that will be an encompassing assessment of the shifting focus of economic and social matters, focusing on the issues of women empowerment through land ownership. Issues of property and inheritance rights, and the unjust nature that has shifted natural recipients to male heads, either through corrupt titling companies, social norms, or societal standards, will also be examined. Migrant Worker

Often, Migrant labor and migrant workers are associated with economic analysis and implications. However, as globalization progresses and more and more individuals are engaged in migrant work, the effects of such work permeate into the social sphere. As such, migrant labor has a very profound effect on gender relations within a country, as well as the transition of care labor from a primary to a secondary occupation for many women. My colleague and I feel that the Migrant worker page is seriously lacking in essential analysis of the changing gender roles associated with migrant labor and, as such, we wish to modify it. Feminization of Poverty

Hello everyone, I am interested in adding and revising the content of the Feminization of poverty page. I feel that substantial parts of the topic are missing on the current page and want to help continue working on the page. Gender discrimination is a main cause of the disproportionate amount of impoverished women to that of men. Statistics show how households with single mothers are at the highest risk of poverty and lack the most in terms of human capabilities. There is an urgent need for more gender studies to be performed in developing countries in order to address these problems and implement specific policies to help mitigate the gender gap in poverty. Feminization of Poverty

Hello everyone, as yk12 has mentioned above, we are currently looking to expand the feminization of poverty page. I feel that this topic is at the heart of gender disparity, as it affects women's opportunities not only economically, but socially, educationally, and politically. Throughout the world there is a definite gap between the capabilities of women and men, and this in turn affects the capabilities available for children as well. This is especially apparent in the case of lone mother households, where families with only a mother for support find themselves in the lowest income brackets, even in extreme poverty. They are unable to take suitable jobs because they must care for their children, and this in turn affects the nutrition, education, and futures of the family. To address these burdens, we must first understand the underlying causes, and how they manifest themselves in women and children's lives. Social exclusion and cultural biases are a big part of this, and if we want to change this social discrimination we must first acknowledge that gaps between the capabilities available for men and women exist, and make this information available to the general public. Proposed Entry: Gender Inequality in China

Hello Everybody! I plan to create a new Wikipedia entry on Gender Inequality in China and propose to add it to WikiProject Gender Studies. Gender studies is a broad field, which assess the effects of gender in various dimensions of life, including the effects of gender inequality. Gender inequality, which can manifest in various degrees, refers to inequalities between individuals due to gender. The topic falls under the scope of gender studies and would be an appropriate addition to the WikiProject gender studies. In order to uphold the goals of WikiProject Gender Studies and expand Wikipedia’s current knowledge on gender studies, I propose to also add an overview of gender inequality in China under the “Gender Inequality Across the Globe” subsection of the Gender inequality main page. This summary will be linked to my new Wikipedia entry, which will cover legislation, cultural and societal norms, and implications in regards to family structure, education, healthcare, and employment. Expanding Mommy track stub

I am planning on significantly expanding the current Mommy track stub on Wikipedia as part of my Poverty, Justice, and Human Capabilities course. This stub is already listed as a part of WP:SOCIOLOGY and rated as mid-importance, and I think that it also falls in line with the aims of WP:GENDER STUDIES.

As the idea of a mommy track and opting out have become more common, particularly in American society, it seems that the article is in need of expansion in order to provide a better overview of the subject as well as a comprehensive examination of the effect of motherhood on women's work opportunities. I will be examining differences in women's wage earnings over the course of a lifetime, the costs of childbearing in different fields, and wage gaps for mothers. I would appreciate any feedback and/or ideas for better expanding the article and how to best contribute to this Wikiproject. I think that it is definitely a gendered norm that is becoming increasingly prevalent and therefore merits discussion on this Wikiproject. Thanks!

New Article: Gender inequality in the English Caribbean

Gender studies covers a broad range of topics on the effects of gender on many different aspects of human survival. I propose an article on gender inequality in the Caribbean as a part of the Wiki Project Gender Studies because it fits seamlessly into this category. I will use research as well as course material to extend on the subject of gender inequality and the Caribbean region focusing on areas such as education, health and the workforce. New Article Gender Inequality Index

I am a student at the University of Utah taking a class on Gender Economic Development and as part of my course work I am planning on creating the article Gender inequality Index (GII) which is a new measurement of gender discrimination built off of the same framework as the Human Development Index (HDI). The (GII) is a replacement for the Gender-related Development Index and the Gender Empowerment Measure which have been the primary measurements of gender inequality since 1995. The (GII) exposes gender discrimination using three dimensions; reproductive health, empowerment, and the labor market whereas the Gender-related Development Index and the Gender Empowerment Measure which focused on income levels and left out other aspects of inequality. The (GII) is used in conjunction with the Human Development Index (HDI) and can not be used independently. Depending on the level of the (GII) it negatively impacts the Human Development Index (HDI) score and because no country has perfect gender equality all countries are negatively impacted. I feel the (GII) is an extremely important topic to cover among the Wikipedia community and a good contribution in the areas of Gender Studies, International Development, Economics, and the United Nations projects. New category - Category:Women by country

I have set up Category:Women by country and begun to populate the category and its sub-cats. It compliments Category:Women by nationality and was a surprising omission in the category system, as is Category:Men by country. Articles and subcategories relating to women were placed into all manner of inappropriate categories. We had the ludicrous situation where rape categories were placed in women's rights or feminism categories. Rape is not a women's right - not being raped is a part of women rights. There are a few issues that need sorting out. New Article: Sex Trafficking in Eastern Europe

For a university level class, I am going to be creating an article that looks at the sex trafficking rings in Easter Europe. The class’s focus is on gender economics of the third world. I will be using a variety of sources, though most will be scholarly. Below is a summary of what I will be talking about and a tentative outline. I would really appreciate some feedback. This is my first Wiki contribution. I am either going to be starting a new article or contributing and editing the existing Human Trafficking article. Is there anything else that I should be looking at? Sex trafficking is a modern form of slavery where people, mostly women and girls are forced, deceived or coerced into prostitution. Human trafficking is the second most lucrative illegal activity worldwide after drug trafficking. The traffickers use psychological and well as physical threats including bondage, serious harm to or physical restraint, and murdering of family members if the victims do not cooperate. Generally the women who are targeted come from lower income areas and desperate situations. There are a number of common patterns for luring victims into situations of sex trafficking traps. Some include; a promise of a good job in another country, a false marriage proposal turned into a bondage situation, being sold into the sex trade by parents or husbands, or being kidnapped by traffickers. Often there is a form of debt bondage where the victims or their family has a debt that must be repaid in the form of service by the woman or girl. They are not freed until the debt is paid. Some of the risks these girls are subjected to are drug and alcohol addiction, physical injuries, malnutrition, sexually transmitted diseases, sterility, miscarriages and/or abortions, reproductive complications and other diseases. In addition to the physical risks, there are many psychological problems that can arise, including shame, grief, fear, distrust, hatred of men, self-hatred, and suicidal thoughts. Outline: 1. Women and the environment

I am working on fixing up the article Women and the environment through history. I am working on this for a university gender and economic development class. For this topic, I plan to be focusing on the role women play agriculture and land development in developing countries. The article needs a lot of help in other areas but for starters, I would like to discuss the effects of women and their cultivation efforts on the environment. Based on studies and research done by women such as Esther Boserup and Bina Agarwal, there is a clear connection in developing countries between the two. In a majority of countries, women are responsible for land cultivation and an improved Wikipedia article would be very beneficial for women's studies. Women in Chile

This page has recently undergone revision, but I would still like to add even more information, though, specifically about

-Marriage and property rights for women in Chile (hopefully specifically saying what they are, and maybe what they have been in the past). If there are any inequalities, it could be because of gender discrimination.

-Women's involvement in politics, the only mention of women in politics is Michelle Bachelet's presidency. Are there many women in politics? Do the gender roles of society keep women out of politics? Do women in politics face discrimination?

-Organizations for women's rights and empowerment, such as National Women's Service (SERNAM) and the Women's Study Center (Centro de Estudios de la Mujer). Also Chile's participation in international organizations that advocate better circumstances for women, like the United Nations and Chile's adoption of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women.

-Women in the workforce. Many women work in unpaid work or informal work. I also wish to see if there is income gap between men and women.

Chinese ideals of female beauty

I nominated Chinese ideals of female beauty for deletion two years ago. It was rescued by ARS and the decision was to keep it and clean it up. I still wonder whether there is a topic here that can be covered by an encyclopedia and I'd like to get someone else's take on it. The notion of "ideals" seems problematic to me, especially in a nation as populous and diverse as China. I think we need to ensure we look at Danish language sources in order to get a good feel for the reliable sources about this topic before adding negative content to any Wikipedia articles. Hi Orhand12. The Gender discrimination and the workplace section of the Employment discrimination article could definitely use some expansion. This could also be spun off into a stand-alone article if you were so inclined. This topic can be controversial, so be careful to ensure that neutrality is maintained and all perspectives are included. The gender pay gap and sexual harassment articles may have relevant content or sources. For a topic like this one, I think one challenge is presenting a global perspective that doesn't use examples from one part of the world to generalize about the phenomenon everywhere. If you will be discussing the legal aspects, we currently have articles on employment discrimination law in the United States, the United Kingdom, and the European Union. Revision to Nancy Folbre page

Prof Folbre is an important feminist economist, but her page is very thin. She has a huge body of work on gender studies - in particular, the economic impact of care work. I am planning to revise the article family economics. I thought it is a suitable topic for being under the wiki project Gender Studies, since gender is a significant factor in determining economic relations within the family. Also the economic relationships within the family is an important factor by shaping the role of gender in a society. So I suggest to bring this article under this wiki project. Family economics is a subject that has been developed in last few decades and there are many resources that could be used to develop the article. Currently the article is pretty much like an outline of a more developed encyclopedia article. I think the subjects that are stated in the article can be a starting point from which further development. I am planning to put the marriage, or formation of family, division of labor within the family and history of family as three possible sections that could be added to the article. I would really appreciate any general ideas on the contribution i am planning to make. One subject where I am not certain is the children. I think I may add another section on the role of children in the family, or I can cover the role of children within the family family in other sections. Also I think I might add how economics of family is related to macroeconomic policies, like welfare programs, or social movements like feminism, or socialism. However I think I might overextend the article by doing then. If you have any advice on these particular subjects where i have confusion, I would like to hear that.

IEG proposal aimed at improving coverage of topics that lay at the intersection of women and philosophy

Hi all - I recently posted a draft of an individual engagement grant proposal aimed at improving the English Wikipedia's coverage of topics that lay at the intersection of women and philosophy through targeted academic outreach, which would include outreach to gender studies academics. If it's approved, I would be conducting the project along with Alex Madva and Katie Gasdaglis. I think the project has significant potential to go a long way towards addressing Wikipedia's under-representation of our targeted topic areas, and would create a scalable model of educational outreach to underrepresented disciplines that can be used in other fields. (It'd also have some direct effect on our demographic imbalances.)

Sex segregation article

This article is currently the subject of an educational assignment.

Greetings all, As a part of Rice University's Poverty, Justice, and Human Capabilities minor, my Poverty and Gender class annually contributes to Wikipedia articles concerning gender bias and disparities. My partner and I have chosen to contribute to and overhaul the article titled "Sex segregation" as it is in dire need of more citations and a global perspective, among other things. The article is already under the scope of WP Gender Studies. Our plan includes the following:
The name will be changed to Gender segregation (even though gender segregation is linked), as we believe that gender is more inclusive towards segregation not only between the biological sexes but between the socially constructed genders as well. We plan on reorganizing the article by starting off from a very broad, theoretical perspective, discussing scholarly definitions and causes of gender segregation, subsequently addressing different spheres of gender segregation in public and private realms. The current article does an adequate job of discussing some arenas in which gender segregation takes place, so we will definitely include the well-cited information the article currently contains. We plan to include contemporary examples, which not only facilitates a global perspective, but also provides an opportunity for multiple editors to continually update the article, maintaining high-quality work. Lastly, we want to discuss consequences (positive and negative) of gender segregations for all genders as well as critiques of gender segregation. There are many prominent theorists including Blackburn, Nussbaum, and Sen whose works we will be utilizing to analyze gender segregation underneath the realm of the Capabilities Approach that is prevalent in our Poverty, Justice, and Human Capabilities minor. We would love feedback from other editors and contributors of this project, especially concerning some of the potential problems we foresee including but not limited to: maintaining a neutral and encyclopedic tone since some research considers gender segregation to have positive outcomes while socially it is overwhelmingly negative, representing both genders, and distinguishing between sex and gender segregation. Importance of women in agriculture

I would like to write an article about women's role in India's massive agricultural sector. I am looking for feedback on how to write an article that aligns with the goals of the Wikiproject: Gender Studies page and educate people on the conditions of a large female population in India. My preliminary research on Wikipedia revealed minimal discussion on this topic despite two substantive articles "Agriculture in India" and "Women in India." In the discussion of agriculture in India, it is necessary to recognize the importance of women farmers and agricultural laborers. According to 2011 statistics, women comprise about 33% of cultivators and about 47% percent of agricultural laborers <E. Krishna Rao></E. Krishna Rao>. Although men still make up most of the labor force, the share of women in the sector is growing rapidly as the appeal of a commodity economy encourages migration of men to urban areas to work as rickshaw drivers, or take jobs in manufacturing, textiles and the like. When men leave, the responsibilities of family care, sustenance and often times, income generation, fall on women. About 70% of Indian women depend on agricultural work for their livelihood, according to 2010 statistics. Among more rural populations it is as high as 84% <C. Tara Satyavathi, Ch. Bharadwaj and P.S. Brahmanand></C. Tara Satyavathi, Ch. Bharadwaj and P.S. Brahmanand>. The disproportionately high number of women who depend on agricultural activity reveals a large and very vulnerable population, creating a social problem in India that must be discussed. I believe that the article "Agriculture in India" could be edited to include more information on women in the country's agricultural sector. However, considering the body of information I think it better to create a separate article. The new article will include a historical perspective, the feminization of agriculture, forms of access to land and the wage gap between male and female agricultural workers in India. I am currently drawing on the work of Amartya Sen and Ester Boserup. I would like to incorporate more gender theories, specifically concerning the cultural notions of whether agricultural work is a perceived as a gendered practice in India. Is it due to cultural norms or necessity that women are being concentrated in the agricultural sector? I will study the extraneous factors such as the limitations of agricultural growth, global climate change, increased trade and export, and the impacts of the India-EU Free Trade Agreement on women, in comparison to other case studies of countries impacted by trade liberalization. The article will conclude with examples and methodologies for female empowerment in India's agricultural sector. I plan on including women's cooperatives and educational programs, the All India Federation of Women Working in Agriculture (AIFWWA) and the Youth for Action and Socio Economic Development Trust. I would greatly appreciate recommendations for how I may expand my perspectives and any other gender studies work I should access? What are some other factors, authors or studies I should explore? Revising the Purdah Article

I would like to revise the Wikipedia page on Purdah. Currently, the page desperately needs improvement: the article is flagged for needing “additional citations for verification”. It is very short, lacking in in detail, credible sources, and citations. Right now the definition of purdah relies on an Eurocentric Greco-Roman historian’s description. The tone of the article lacks credibility. Its assertions are overly simplistic and makes claims with bare-boned citation. The article does not address the historical, religious, or cultural origins, or the influence of class, nationality, economic shifts, Islamization of the state, or women’s personal choices-- all sub-topics I plan to add to the article. Currently the article is poorly organized. In addition, the article uses a biased, Western-centric point of view. In all, this page is currently biased, unsystematic, unorganized, and lacks in research.

Purdah is a very important topic that warrants a well-written article. The purdah has wide-ranging ramifications for millions of women around the world. Purdah takes forms in women’s dress, behavior and institutional rights in terms of access to resources and mobility. Given the multitude of perspectives (sociological, human rights, economic, political, historical, religious, gender rights, etc) a neutral and comprehensive exploration of this topic is very much needed to present an unbiased picture for this tradition. I hope to improve upon it by increasing the thoroughness in research, comprehensiveness in content and analysis, clear organization, neutral tone of voice, number of citations from credible sources (academic articles from journals on Asian history, women's studies, sociology, anthropology, etc), inclusion of appropriate pictures, and the degree to which it is imbedded within the Wikipedia universe by linking to other relevant pages.

Revising Gender and Suicide

Hello All.

Like the previous few posters, I am a part of a class at Rice that is improving Wikipedia articles generally focused on human capabilities. I plan to spend the next few weeks updating the Gender and suicide page as it is currently fairly underdeveloped. The formatting is rather sloppy, there's no headings, and the article focuses solely on sex even though 'gender' is in the title. Although there is a large paragraph discussing China, the article is overall fairly Western-centric. I am planning on overhauling most of the page by reorganizing the current information into sections. I will also be adding new material that focuses on the social causes of the gender/suicide gap. Time permitting, I also hope to include information about developing nations and suicide statistics as they relate to the LGBT community. I am of course open to any tips, comments, and concerns. Looking forward to working with this WikiProject!

Postcolonial Feminism

My classmate and I are working on vastly improving the page on Postcolonial Feminism for one of our courses this semester. We would like to improve the clarity and organization of the page, but many of the articles that extrapolate on specific variants of feminism do not have a particular form or structure. Does anyone have advice on how to approach this project?

Also, it is possible that we will have the capability to update the two paragraphs on postcolonial feminism and third-world feminism within the variants subsection of the feminist theory page.

Revision of Reservation Poverty

I am proposing to add a new section to the current article entitled, reservation poverty. This new addition will focus on the effects of poverty specifically on the human capabilities of women as it pertains to their sexual health and family planning. The expansion will include information on domestic violence and rape against women as well as trends in teenage pregnancy and suicide. I will also include a section on the presence of development organizations focused on women's groups and family structures. Currently, the page provides a broad overview of the rates of poverty on the reservations and some explanation for its causes and examples of development efforts. Due to the gendered effects of poverty, an addition of a section focused on women and family's will provide a better understanding of the effects of poverty on reservation populations. I plan on using a number of sources for the expansion of this section. I will be using scholarly sources, statistics provided by federal organizations as well as information from local newspapers and magazines that have a closer relationship with Native American communities. If you have any valuable feedback or comments I would love to have constructive criticism as I add to this page.

Expansion of Female health issues

The current discussion of female health issues lacks sufficient detail and could use further explanation. Under the Healthcare in India page there is only a small subsection devoted to the discussion on the unique aspects of female health in India. A change in the current title from "Female health issues" to "Women's health in India" would also help to broaden the discussion on the unique aspects that should be covered under the subtopic. As part of a classroom assignment, I propose additional discussion on nutritional, cardiovascular, and reproductive health. Furthermore, the expanded discussion would include statistics on current disparities and give reason--cultural, biological, and economical--for differences in healthcare outcomes between men and women. My proposed expansion will include relevant discussion of women's role in contemporary society and the how differences in gender impact overall healthcare outcomes. Are there any other forms of healthcare outcomes that should be included in the expanded discussion? Should subtopics of reproductive health (sexual health, abortions, maternal health and breast health) be given individual sub-sections or grouped together under the umbrella term of sexual health? Revising Domestic Worker Page

I would like to make some revisions to the page Domestic Worker. I would like to contribute to this article by adding and developing information to the page that includes a specific focus on how Domestic Work relates to and affects the lives of women. I believe that there are a few sections of the current page that would be perfect for expansion such as the Current Situation Around the World section and the Domestic Work and International Migration section. I believe that the former could be expanded to include more regions of the world as well as information about legislation that has affected the situation of domestic workers in those regions. I would like to expand the latter to include information about trends in migrant domestic workers and how those trends affect the sending and receiving countries of domestic work. . I have found a few articles that address specific migration trends such as Rhacel Salazar’s article on Filipina migrant domestic workers and Shirlena Wong’s article on migrant domestic workers in Singapore. I would greatly appreciate any advice and help about what kind of information needs to be included in my revisions and what kind of direction I can go in with my expansions. Revising Hegemonic Masculinity

I am a part of a class at Rice that is improving Wikipedia articles generally focused on human capabilities and issues related to gender and development. I plan to spend the next few weeks updating the hegemonic masculinity page. It is officially listed as a feminism-related stub so it is not at all comprehensive. There are some organizational issues as well seeing as the lead section is longer than the entire rest of the article. It can be greatly expanded upon because it leaves out several subcategories of masculinities including but not limited to race, class, nationality, and sexual orientation. It also leaves out the concept of intersectionality that has been showing up a lot in the recent literature surrounding the topic. By cleaning up the existing content and expanding the article's point of view I intend to improve the article's overall quality. Let me know if you have any suggestions, tips, or concerns. Proposal for New Wiki Article Titled "The Prosecution of Gender-Targeted Crimes"

Hello, after editing the "War Rape" section of the "Rwandan Genocide" article and renaming it as "Gender-Targeted Crimes," I have decided to expand beyond the Rwandan situation of gender-targeted crimes and look at the justice system of such crimes in the international and domestic (as in U.S.) perspectives. The class that I am doing the Wikipedia projects for has re-emphasized the importance and graveness of gender-targeted crimes and the lack of necessary action in carrying out the prosecution for these crimes.

To provide evidence of the graveness of the gender-targeted crimes, I have included some statements and the sources below:

Between 200,000 and 500,000 women are estimated to have been raped during the Rwandan Genocide. (Elbe, Stefan. 2002. "HIV/AIDs and the Changing Landscape of War in Africa." International Security, 27(2): 159-177), and it took the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR), which was created to manage trials of the crimes committed, 3 years to proceed its first rape indictment (Haddad, Heidi. 2011. “Mobilizing the Will to Prosecute: Crimes of Rape at the Yugoslav and Rwandan Tribunals.” Human Rights Review. 12(1): 109-132.)
In the U.S. 700,000 rapes are estimated to occur every year, but the actual number of cases may be up to fifty times the reported cases (Seager 2008).
Marital rape is not recognized as a crime in most countries (Seager, Joni. 2008. The Penguin Atlas of Women in the World. 4th ed. New York: Penguin Books. ).
Although the Violence Against Women Act, which was passed in 1994, began providing services for women facing violence, but there are limits on gender-targeted crimes reaching the Supreme Court and many of the violence cases are left for the state governments to oversee (Resnick, Judith. 2001. "Categorical Federalism: Jurisdiction, Gender, and the Globe." The Yale Law Journal. 111(3): 619-680. ).

The evidence above suggests that there is a great lack of prosecuting the crimes. Not even in the U.S. is there a efficient, working system. To solve this problem, the obvious thing to do is to find justice for the violence- to improve and reform the prosecution of the crimes. It's an issue that all nations need to focus attention to.

For the new article, which will be titled, "The Prosecution of Gender-Targeted Crimes," I plan to have information on the types of gender-targeted crimes (such as rape and domestic violence), the International Aspect (tribunals, the International Criminal Court), Domestic Aspect (United States), and Suggested Solution section. This is just a basic plan for now as I plan to develop a detailed outline when I do more research and get advice.

I have found scholarly articles that provide background information on the prosecution of the gender-targeted crimes. From a brief overview of the articles, it seems that much more needs to be done in regards to improving the prosecution system. I plan to read the articles in detail to gather more information.

I worry that the article may sound like an essay and less of an encyclopedia entry. Does anybody have some advice on avoiding that problem? Additionally, I would love to have feedback on my proposal for the new article. Any advice that would help improve the plan for my new entry would be much appreciated! Thank you. Revising the Femicide Article

I am a student at Rice University working with a partner who is looking to revise the current Wikipedia article on Femicide. The current Wikipedia article on Femicide is only a few paragraphs longs and utilizes very few resources in its discussion of the topic. Our goal is to greatly expand and reorganize the article, as well as use many more resources to offer a more NPOV. Although the existing article introduces the concept of femicide, it does not discuss in detail the many different kinds of femicide nor does it give differing examples of how, why and where femicide occurs world-wide. It also does not discuss much of the controversy the term offers, and arguments against the concept of femicide. A nuanced and neutral perspective is absolutely imperative on this subject in order to represent the many different facets of this issue, which this article does not currently offer.We strongly believe that femicide is a very real concept, and that it applies directly with Gender Studies. We hope this article will clear up misconceptions of femicide versus regular homicide or even masculinicide. Our goal is to not just define and categorize femicide and its different manifestations, but also give an overview of how it occurs world-wide. We both realize that the scope of this article is quite large, and we wish to join it to this Project page not only because the topic is extremely applicable to Gender Studies, but also for the resources this project offers. I plan to create a new article called Climate Change and Gender for my class at Rice University, SWGS 322. There is no current Wikipedia article on this topic, nor is there a section covering it on the Climate change or Gender pages. In the past, there existed a page called The Effects of Climate Change on Impoverished Women and Children, but it was deleted for original research. I do not think I will have this problem because a) I have found many reputable sources for this topic and b) I have a few years of experience editing Wikipedia articles so I (hope that I) do not draw my own conclusions from other people's research when writing content for Wikipedia. My new article would include a brief definition of climate change, an explanation of the way it affects genders differently (even among low-income and impoverished populations) and why that is the case (social norms like division of labor, biological factors, environment/geography, etc.). It would summarize the research on the subject and talk about the two main types of policy addressing climate change (mitigative and adaptive) while focusing on case studies (in Bangladesh and India). It is a common misconception that FGM only happens in Africa, but I am going to add sections about places in the Middle East, Asia, even the United States, etc, where FGM happens. I also am going to expand on the different varieties and statistics of FGM that happen in each different country. Proposed article on female education in south Sudan

I am currently a student at Rice University in the program for Poverty, Justice, and Human Capabilities. I am seeking to create a new article discussing female education in south Sudan. The only information available at the present on Wikipedia are small snippets from several different pages related to Sudan, but there is no focus on the gender disparity in education. This issue has gained a good deal of international attention from the United Nations and NGOs in recent years, and it would be beneficial to have a page dedicated to this topic, so that interested parties could access all relevant information in a single place. Masculism task force

I noticed that Wikipedia:WikiProject_Gender_Studies/Feminism_Task_Force eventually grew large enough to splinter off into its own WikiProject or something like that. Recently I was trying to make a project to compliment Portal:Men's rights much like this WP compliments Portal:Gender studies or how WP:Feminism compliments Portal:Feminism. At Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Proposals/WikiProject Men's rights someone suggested that this project be called "Masculism" instead. I am wondering people's opinions on this.

I am wondering if it might be more appropriate to operate this as a GS task force for guidance first? Based on the history it was created in 2008 then moved in 2010 so it could serve as some kind of incubation period for a year or two prior to a force>project expansion? Women poets, women judges, female lawyers and female pornographic film actors

During the recent hullabaloo around Category:American women novelists the claim was made that "wikipedia has more articles on female pornographic film actors than on women poets, this is very discoraging to young women." To begin with, the claim seems to have been false, even back in October 2012. What is true is that until about a week ago Category:American female pronographic film actors was a bigger category than Category:American women poets. The later is now slightly larger. However if people want to find another cause celebre they could latch onto Category:American women journalists, although that is very under-developed, partly because I was directly attacked for trying to expand it, even though I was clearly abiding by non-diffusing rules. Category:American female lawyers also might be a point of contention, but that is not very fully developed. What is fully used or very close to being fully used is Category:American women judges and it is still smaller than the American female pornographic film actors cat. Here we do have an arguable problem with lack of articles. As far as I can tell, all federal judges at least to the level of district judge have articles, and virtually all the women have been put in the women category. On the other hand, we lack articles on the vast majority of state supreme court justices, although we generally have articles on current holders of these postions, so a good percentage of the women are represented. There still are some women who could have articles created, and that might be the best way to address this problem. There are also a bunch more women who are state appeals court judges, and I am pretty sure those also qualify generally as notable by postion. I am a lot less sure what can be done to create more articles on more local judges, which is where msot judges are.John Pack Lambert (talk) 21:59, 16 May 2013 (UTC)

Aviatrix and other archaic terms

I've been going through a lot of historical biographies lately and am surprised to see how often archaic gendered terms such as poetess, sculptress, and aviatrix crop up in Wikipedia articles. I know some of these come from the older sources such as the 1911 Britannica, but in other cases these are the result of decisions being made by editors. There's currently a discussion on Talk:Amy Johnson over whether she should be referred to as an aviatrix, for instance. I'm wondering how this has been dealt with previously and if there are specific policies surrounding such uses. I've found the essays Wikipedia:Gender-neutral language and Wikipedia:Use modern language and note that WP:MOS says "use gender-neutral language where this can be done with clarity and precision". New contributor looking for advice on creating a new article

Hello all, I am required to contribute to Wiki for my class Gender and Economics in the Third World and have been designated to work on El Salvador. I am working on an article to be called Reproductive rights in El Salvador. I am looking at covering topics including things like history, abortion, sexual violence/crime, legal and/or religious issues, education, activism, prenatal care and other issues surrounding pregnancy. Other than the Wiki article creation links and basic available information; Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way to structure an article? What about content? Is there something within this topic I should focus on more than another? For example, if you were reading an article, called Reproductive rights in El Salvador, what would you like and/or expect to see? What advice can you offer to a first time contributor? You can work on the article in your userspace, and then ask people here to take a look before moving it over to article space. New article looking for suggestions

I am working on a new article on missing women in China, and this is part of my course assignment. It is China's own context that make me write a new article on missing women problem. I plan to start my article from the following points:

In my first section, except the general description of the missing women concept and background in China, I also plan to post some data of the trends in China in the past decades. In cause section, I want to state this problem from three aspects, Chinese historical and traditional culture, one-child policy, and sex-selective abortion. Under the last section, policies, I’d like to introduce the most recent policy change on controlling population in Beijing, which probably will influence the sex ratio of new born in China. Proposed New Article

I belong to a graduate gender and economic development class, and for my final project I am creating a new article for Wikipedia. The topic I would like to add is Commodification of the womb; the process by which the services of the female womb are offered for sale and sold on the market. Historically, when a couple desired a child, there was natural conception, and adoption. Through modernization of reproductive medicine, the options for how a child can be conceived have expanded. Artificial insemination, in vitro fertilization, and surrogacy, have all been possible solutions when faced with infertility. The commodified womb isn’t just for the infertile, but for those willing to pay for the convenience of having someone else who gestates their child.

The intention of adding womb commodification to Wikipedia is to discuss and bring awareness to the growing market commodification of any product, especially that of the human body. This entry seeks to provide information regarding the history of womb commodification, and to explore the ethical, social, and legal issues, as well as the market. It is important to also discuss the ethical points of womb commodification, while also balancing it against a woman’s right to offer her services to the market. If you have the choice to have someone cook your meals, raise your children, weed your garden, clean your home, all with the intention of allowing you time to focus on other tasks, why then should the option to have someone else grow your embryo not be a possibility for those who have the means to afford such a luxury.

Misandry/Violence against men/Misogyny/Violence against women

I recently made an edit to place Category:Violence against men as see-also category of Category:Misandry and made similar edits to Category:Violence against women; these changes were disputed so I reverted and am bringing them here for discussion as a centralized place vs the category pages which have few watchers. My reasoning is that while Misandry (and Misogyny) are often important drivers for violence against men and women, they are not the only cause; for example violence against (gender) can be driven by ethnoreligious hatred, political violence, individual/interpersonal reasons, psychosis, revenge, tradition (such as the case with Female genital mutilation or sex-selective abortion), to humiliate an enemy, racism, to gain power (see [6] for more details), etc - but we don't have religious hatred and racism as parents of these categories. An example I've given before is Srebrenica massacre, which was driven by ethnoreligious hatred of Bosniaks, and not necessarily hatred of men writ large. Thus, I made these edits: [7] and [8] to turn them into a "see also" relationship, meaning that readers can still easily browse from one to another in one click but without the implication that Violence is a subset or is defined or controlled by such misandry or misogyny. Pageview stats

After a recent request, I added WikiProject Gender Studies to the list of projects to compile monthly pageview stats for. The data is the same used by http://stats.grok.se/en/ but the program is different, and includes the aggregate views from all redirects to each page. There is a proposal to delete categories involving literature by women, including deleting Literature by African-American women, Literature by Asian-American women, Literature by Native American women, Literature by Hispanic and Latino American women. It's a pretty guy-heavy discussion, and a couple guys have said that they don't think women's writing is any different from men's and therefore they'd do away with all women's lit categories. Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

I decided to post here as well, because I have not gotten any feedback yet on that talk page, and I don't think it gets much traffic. I thought this wikiproject might have interest in the category. Help with two articles?

I'm going to post this on multiple applicable WikiProjects, so my apologies for the cut and paste. I don't really see the purpose in writing a new one for each WP. In any case, I need some help fleshing out the article for Gender Advertisements, the book by Goffman. Long story short, the article was created by a group of students who were sent here with apparently little to no instruction or education about Wikipedia and writing encyclopedia articles, so the page had the standard issues: original research, bad sourcing, tone- the works. I've done enough to show where the book would be notable, but the page does need to be fleshed out to focus on the book's influence on others and a basic outline. I'm not overly familiar with the work, so it'd be better for someone familiar with the work to edit the page. I think that the students probably saw the basic article for gender advertisement, which has similar issues (but better sourcing), and modeled their page after that and after the basic student paper type outline. Both articles could use some work from a savvy editor, if anyone's up for the challenge. I've cleaned out the worst in the book article and threw some sources in, so it has that going for it. A problematical point

From the list of aims of this project:

`To maintain a gender-neutral language (where approproate) in line with the neutral point of view policy.'

Wow! Sounds like trying to reconcile the irreconcilable. I use she, and her, etc. as default pronouns when I write, which, in historical context is gender-neutral (because it redresses long-standing imbalance). But this is not `mainstream', nor `neutral point of view' in the sense of uncontroversial. It is highly political.

I've long considered the neutral point of view policy to be ill-conceived, or at least highly problematical. In the present case here, I urge people use gender-neutral (ie., radical) language even though it may mean getting into arguments with npov-enforcers. -- Communpedia Tribal (talk) 06:06, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

Feminism-focused Inspire Campaign proposal for distributed editing

Dear WikiProject Gender Studies:

I wish to invite you to review an Inspire Campaign proposal and offer feedback if you wish:

What's special about this proposal is it looks to (re)value sporadic editing and respectfully honor the expertise of subject matter experts, without asking them to be responsible for 'fixing' Wikipedia's problems or necessarily become long term editors. This is a novel approach that perhaps could gain traction with edit-a-thons and WikiProject initiatives because it comes from a feminist pedagogical perspective for analysis in order to generate re-usable lists to share/work on. It's brings an offline alternative to "pinging" edit suggestions back to project pages -- though I must say I am in awe of the long to-do lists gathered here of articles needing attention. The exact topic that the proposed pilot project will take up is not yet set, though it will connect to gender studies and/or feminist theory, and possibly draw on augment the existing lists you have.

I wanted to ping the WikiProject Gender Studies as an approach to counter systemic bias that might interest this project and I would look forward to your feedback

Participate in the Inspire Campaign! Stop Rape & Get Apologies

I want to encourage WikiProject Gender Studies to take a look at endorse and discuss some of the Inspire Campaign ideas for addressing Wikipedia's Gender Gap before the funding application deadline tomorrow, but I think you can continue to endorse into April. At the moment, 581 people have participated. It would be great to get more to show commitment to the issue.

Editor needed with ref to book Man Cannot Speak for Her: Volume I; A Critical Study of Early Feminist Rhetoric

Back in 2010 an editor didn't quite type in what they meant to, in article National_Woman_Suffrage_Association#Ideology, the last paragraph of that section reads:

"In adopting such ideology, officers of the National Association soon began to later their speeches, resolutions and hearing before Congress."

I have to think bits were elided and two sentences joined with smashing results. The footnote is National_Woman_Suffrage_Association#cite_note-campbell-7 referencing one page of the book by Karlyn Kohrs Campbell. I feel a little frustrated about it because if it's expanded to encompass all DVA weeks (like the one in the US) it will be very useful. Personally, I work with teens at our public library and I feel the topic is important. I do have enough references to make it notable for the US. MOS:IDENTITY is being revisited: How should Wikipedia refer to transgender individuals before and after their transition?

A recent discussion of MOS:IDENTITY closed with the recommendation that Wikipedia's policy on transgender individuals be revisited.

Two threads have been opened at the Village Pump:Policy. The first addresses how the Manual of Style should instruct editors to refer to transgender people in articles about themselves (which name, which pronoun, etc.). The second addresses how to instruct editors to refer to transgender people when they are mentioned in passing in other articles. Your participation is welcome. Guydykes and Girlfags

I've encountered these neologisms and learned their meanings only recently, but the concept (paradoxical as it seems) does seem to be notable in gender and LGBT studies. Guydykes and girlfags, by definition, do not identify as transgender, but eventually they may come to do so, or come to identify as genderqueer instead. There is certainly an element of gender or gender-role transgression in there. Girlfags may also enjoy performing femininity in an exaggerated drag queen style, i. e., like a faux queen. Can anyone help? I wasn't the one who wrote the article, but I just found it and I think Wikipedia should cover the concept in some form. --Florian Blaschke (talk) 19:22, 6 February 2016 (UTC)

As a further thought, I wonder if strong "anti-effeminacy" (which is also at least a significant driving force behind homo- and transphobia, since they affect gay and bisexual men, especially gender-nonconforming feminine/femme gay and bisexual men, crossdressers, drag queens, trans women and transfeminine individuals far more than other groups) is thought to be an effect, or manifestation, of toxic masculinity, as it is arguably the insistence that masculinity is obligatory and exclusive in men that contributes to the toxicity of toxic masculinity, although the main problem in "toxic masculinity" – as I understand – is the interpretation of masculinity in terms of essentially antisocial behaviour. --Florian Blaschke (talk) 10:24, 30 July 2016 (UTC)

It's not immediately clear that these have gotten significant scholarly attention outside of literature on rape culture. I'd also comment that there is a bit of activist language in this section. Something like "To dismantle rape culture" contains an inherent value judgement that Wikipedia shouldn't be making. WP decides whether things are notable, not whether things are good or bad. I'm concerned only with the term and concept "toxic masculinity". The rest was only a non-essential afterthought. Google Books gives at least 67 hits, with a fair number of scholarly sources present, which are moreover by far not all primarily concerned with rape and rape culture as far as I can see. (One source equates "toxic masculinity" with "hypermasculinity".) It's not immediately clear that your assertion is well-founded. In fact, I have been able to trace the term back to its apparent source, this paper (p. 66) by Tracy Karner about Vietnam veterans, which has nothing to do with rape culture.

However, I notice that we have a whole article on hegemonic masculinity, which seems to resemble the concept of "toxic masculinity", though "toxic masculinity" focuses more explicitly on the "dark" or negative side of the "traditional" ideal, or rather stereotype, of masculinity.

That Wikipedia avoids value judgments is not quite true, IMHO. If the scholarly (or otherwise) consensus is that something is bad, especially when the consensus is overwhelming, Wikipedia can and even should say so in its own voice. Wikipedia does not say, for example, "Some believe it is necessary to fight racism because they think it is bad." That would be ridiculous and ethically highly questionable as it could mislead the reader into thinking that there is a significant controversy on this point. --Florian Blaschke (talk) 14:27, 30 July 2016 (UTC)

I didn't dig too deeply. Mine was just a commentary on the current sourcing in the section, thus "immediately clear".

And no, WP cannot and should not make value judgments in its own voice, regardless of how contemptible a subject is. Racism is fine example of my point. Per the article lead, it attributes the value judgement to a source: "The UN convention further concludes that superiority based on racial differentiation is scientifically false, morally condemnable, socially unjust and dangerous, and there is no justification for racial discrimination, anywhere, in theory or in practice." At any rate, aside from a digression on WP:ATTRIBUTEPOV, toxic masculinity seems to fit fairly well with Machismo, probably more so than hegemonic masculinity, since the former is a general concept, and the latter is a specific academic concept coined by a particular person. Editing guidelines?

A question: are there any guidelines about gender considerations & proper representation on Wikipedia articles? e.g., present topics in a way that represents men and women equally (when men and women are equal components of the group/population in question). The question arises in connection with Haredi Judaism, where a few weeks ago I encountered a set of photographs exclusively of men. In discussions of the issue, another editor has claimed that "gender ... considerations do not have any basis in Wikipedia policy and guidelines"[12], and that it's okay to have mostly men in the photographs because "men are the public face of Haredi Judaism". I'd imagine that there are gender considerations in Wikipedia policy; the closest we get that I'm aware of is MOS:IMAGERELEVANCE, "seek to depict a variety of ages, genders, and ethnicities". Question about pronouns for a genderfluid character

A task force of WikiProject Novels, WP:RRTF, has a draft in progress for a book which contains a gender-fluid character. There's been some discussion about how to describe the character, as they make a point in the books of discouraging the use of "they" or "she/he". Does anybody know of a policy to guide us? {{Infobox journal}} now features ISO 4 redirect detection to help with the creation and maintenance of these redirects, and will populate Category:Articles with missing ISO 4 abbreviation redirects. ISO 4 redirects help readers find journal articles based on their official ISO abbreviations (e.g. J. Phys. A → Journal of Physics A), and also help with compilations like WP:JCW and WP:JCW/TAR. The category is populated by the |abbreviation= parameter of {{Infobox journal}}. If you're interested in creating missing ISO 4 redirects:

Load up an article from the category (or only check for e.g. Gender studies journals).
One or more maintenance templates should be at the top of page, with links to create the relevant redirects and verify the abbreviations.
VERIFY THAT THE ABBREVIATION IN |abbreviation= IS CORRECT FIRST

There are links in the maintenance templates to facilitate this. See full detailed instructions at Category:Articles with missing ISO 4 abbreviation redirects.
