India local Time Template
Folks, gud news... Now we can have India local time template using {{Time|IST}} . I got this done with the help of User:SkyLined. -- TinuCherian (Chat?) - 17:11, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks Buddy for that ;)Suyogaerospacetalk to me! 17:20, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
- Welcome :) -- Tinu Cherian - 17:21, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
You may use this code in your userpages :
<div style="text-align:left; font-family:verdana; font-size:8pt; background:white;"> '''My local time is:''' '''{{Time|IST}}'''. Click <span class="plainlinks" id="purgelink">[{{fullurl:{{FULLPAGENAME}}|action=purge}} <span style="color:black">'''here'''</span>] to refresh.</span></div>
-- Tinu Cherian - 22:55, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Tinu, while on the subject is it possible for you to make a similar template to list out the UTC equivalent? This would be useful to convert events that occurred in IST (such as a bomb blast), into UTC for global conversion. Thanks! =Nichalp «Talk»= 06:35, 20 July 2008 (UTC)
Indian Rupee to US Dollar converter
Speaking of templates, the INRConvert template can be used in India-related articles to format and display monetary values in Indian Rupees as well as US Dollars. I created the template a while ago, but forgot to let everyone know. The template documentation page has examples on how it can be used. There probably are some calculation bugs, since it's been very long since I've had to use INS :). But please feel free to let me know of any issues – I'll be glad make any changes needed. Thanks AreJay (talk) 23:52, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
- As and when needed :). The long answer is, as long as there isn't a discernible difference between the conversion rate in the template and the value from Bloomberg, I wouldn't plan to update the template values. My logic is that this template would be used mostly to display Dollar conversions for large monetary amounts (eg. GDP of India, NSDP of Indian states, net revenue of Indian companies, etc). Therefore a difference of $10-20 for sums exceeding a few thousand Dollars wouldn't have a substantial enough impact. However, if there is a noticeable difference, I'll do a mass find-and-replace in the template with the new conversion rate. Thanks AreJay (talk) 00:45, 16 July 2008 (UTC)
- I notice that values such as 5 paise is being rounded down to 0 USD. Can the converter mark it as "< 1 cent"? =Nichalp «Talk»= 06:36, 16 July 2008 (UTC)

- Can you also include a parameter for the necessary significant digits? For example 400 crore rounding up to 101.89 is a little sharp when dealing with estimate. {{convert}} has this feature. Thanks! =Nichalp «Talk»= 07:57, 16 July 2008 (UTC)
- Hi, I'll take a look at {{convert}} and incorporate that into the template. Thanks AreJay (talk) 14:08, 16 July 2008 (UTC)
- Done: Template now indicates "lesser than 1¢" where applicable, and provides rounding for large monetary values, when using formatting parameters. Thanks AreJay (talk) 20:54, 16 July 2008 (UTC)

Do you know why this happens? When this template is used in a bullet point statement the line breaks at its first occurance. Like this for example -
- In today's world ₹100 (US$1.20) is enough but not ₹50 (60¢ US).
This is not a problem when used in non-bullet statement. Example - In today's world ₹100 (US$1.20) is enough but not ₹50 (60¢ US). --gppande «talk» 15:36, 16 July 2008 (UTC)
- Yup, I had listed it under /bugs since I had tried to use it within a bullet once. I tried to do the same this morning using {{convert}} and didn't encounter the same issue. I'm looking through that template now to see how this can be fixed. Thanks AreJay (talk) 16:22, 16 July 2008 (UTC)
- Fixed: Issue was with line-breaking spaces. The same issue was occurring when using numbered-lists. This should also have been fixed by the correction. Thanks AreJay (talk) 18:19, 16 July 2008 (UTC)
- Cool, above example got straight. nice job! --gppande «talk» 07:54, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

- Thanks AreJay!. A really useful converter to have. But the only drawback is that it needs to be updated frequently. I have gone ahead and protected it from vandalism. =Nichalp «Talk»= 14:38, 17 July 2008 (UTC)
On a related note. A template to track rupee depreciation would also be welcome. For example, it would be useful to know how much say 10 rupees in 1970 is worth today. The conversion parameters would have something similar to {{rupee value|year}}. However, I do not know where to get such data of the historical value of the rupee. Would anyone be knowing? Thanks! =Nichalp «Talk»= 14:58, 17 July 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Nichalp, thanks for taking care of {{sprotect}} for the template. Regarding Rupee depreciation, it would be great to have such a template. There already is one for US, UK and Germany (see {{inflation}}). I will search online to see if I can get some reliable data. Anyone that has access to such data, please feel free to share the info. Putting this template together shouldn't be too much of an effort, since we can leverage some code from {{INRConvert}}. Thanks AreJay (talk) 19:38, 17 July 2008 (UTC)
- Great! I didn't know there was a template in existence. I did some searching around for figures and what better place than the RBI to get such values. But I'm not sure what index we should be using to calculate inflation. India uses the Wholesale Price Index rather than the globally prevalent Consumer Price Index. The RBI has been kind enough to list both. WPI starts from 1953. I wish we had pre-independence historical data. This is the link: [1] It's under Part III. Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 06:36, 18 July 2008 (UTC)
- I think we can use WPI, since that's the basis of how India calculates inflation [2]. I did notice an issue though in the RBI data. It appears that WPI in India is baselined approximately every 10 years. This means that GoI sets a WPI baseline index of 100 every 10 years or so, resulting in no continuous trend data from 1952. We can extrapolate data (for eg. WPI for 1981-82 is 281.3 per 1970-1982 data, but is baselined to 100 per 1981-1993 data. We can therefore use WPI of 281.3 for 1981-82 and extrapolate it across 1981-1993 data). I wanted to get some feedback to see if doing this would be ok, since I'm not sure if it's borderline WP:OR. Thanks! AreJay (talk) 16:33, 18 July 2008 (UTC)
- It would borderline OR. However, I think we could go ahead with making a makeshift one while continuing a reliable search for linear data. =Nichalp «Talk»= 07:03, 19 July 2008 (UTC)
- Sure, I'll go ahead and get this started on a sandbox. Will add a new section below when it's ready, to get some feedback. Thanks! AreJay (talk) 14:28, 19 July 2008 (UTC)

INRInflation
Based on the discussions in Indian Rupee to US Dollar converter above, I've created a test page located at User:AreJay/INRInflation/test. The template tells users what Rs. value in x year equates to a certain Rs. amount (based on y year prices). The template calculates this amount based on inflation data provided by the government ([3]; refer to Wholesale Price Index data). The data was then extrapolated and added to User:AreJay/INRInflation/year, based on discussions in the INRConvert section above. The code itself is located at User:AreJay/INRInflation.
Any help in testing the template will be appreciated. Basically, I need feedback on a) template logic (is the template performing as needed), and b) usability (whether the template's parameters are easy to use). Very basic documentation on how to use the parameters is located on the test page. If volunteers could go there and experiment with some test data and provide some feedback, I'd greatly appreciate it (side note: Inflation data in India is only available for fiscal years 1952 through 2007. Therefore, any test data not within this range will error out). Thanks! AreJay (talk) 06:37, 20 July 2008 (UTC)
Copyright and Law
If someone knows about copyrights and the Indian Copyright Act in detail, please could you answer this: [Wikipedia talk:Copyrights#Copyright of Indian Law]. It has wide ramifications for this project. Thanks! =Nichalp «Talk»= 18:42, 20 July 2008 (UTC)

- Why do you want to copy word for word from an Act? You should be putting it into your own words. Ncmvocalist (talk) 09:36, 21 July 2008 (UTC)
- There may be instances where you need to quote verbatim. For example when listing out the syllabus of an exam, Only verbatim copying would be possible. =Nichalp «Talk»= 09:50, 21 July 2008 (UTC)

Mystery project
Hello, everybody. This mystery wikiproject has turned up on a list of projects that have not yet been assigned a position on the WikiProject Council Directory. I was wondering how I should treat it, whether it's a task-force or a project in the making? Many thanks for your help! – ClockworkSoul 15:44, 21 July 2008 (UTC)
- I think it would be safe to mark it as a task force of Wikiproject India. =Nichalp «Talk»= 16:48, 21 July 2008 (UTC)
Probs on LS constituency
I went to check some other LS pages I didnt do, and there's a conflict with the EC. Some of them have different/wrong candidates as the EC. Some of them are easy to correct, but it's hard to go through all of them again. I guess re-checking can be a to-do.
Also I was wondering the sources for these http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Constituencies_of_the_Lok_Sabha#Karnataka ? It seems 6 constituencies are unamtched with the EC list and thus I don't know which to edit out and bring in the EC lists. Lihaas (talk) 00:11, 22 July 2008 (UTC)
WikiProject notification bot
There is currently a proposal for a bot that would notify WikiProjects when their articles have entered certain workflows, e.g. when they are nominated for deletion or for Good article reassessment.
The question is whether a relevant number of wikiprojects would be interested in using such a bot. You can find details of the functionality, and leave your comments, at the bot request page.
I am posting this message to the 20 largest WikiProjects (by number of articles), since they would be the most likely users. Thanks, --B. Wolterding (talk) 12:07, 22 July 2008 (UTC)

Lok Sabha constituencies
I just finished the Assam section with Gauhati (Lok Sabha constituency). I'll probably finish Punjab tomorrow.
Though 1 thing I had with this is that I cited http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Soman/temp-lsbyelections for 1956. Not too sure about the veracity of this source. Lihaas (talk) 23:26, 15 July 2008 (UTC)
- Though not sure what you wanted to convey/ask, but citing Wikipedia as source is not a wise thing. Do you, by any chance, work with Salilb (talk · contribs)? Guys, check Salilb's contributions. This user has been doing a tremendous job since past couple of weeks as I could see. He is making pages after pages for Lok Sabha constituencies(sadly, without refs which make them occasional targets for WP:CSD). Are you guys working in co-ordination? --gppande «talk» 09:00, 16 July 2008 (UTC)
- Just a passing thought. Maybe, you guys can approach some folks who make bots to prepare such pages. Anyways, keep up the good work. --gppande «talk» 09:06, 16 July 2008 (UTC)
- The sources are pretty straightforward, straight out of the election commission. I don't know who has a bot for this, but it'll still need input from the election commission's sources. Maybe the bot can create tables, etc just to make them better looking and similiar in format.
I also contacted Salilb to co-ordiante. Lihaas (talk) 16:17, 16 July 2008 (UTC)
- Hello, I've created the pages from the info I got from the Lok Sabha web site, specifically from http://164.100.47.134/newls/lokprev.aspx. I realize now I should've mentioned the reference. Will do that henceforth. Reg the source, there are some ambiguities from this page especially with persons from multiple constituencies so some info may be lacking. Secondly, is there a decided format for these pages? I've only put up the list of members. Some states have the results of 2004 election which I haven't mentioned in the pages I created. Salilb (talk) 11:57, 17 July 2008 (UTC)
- I noticed that most of the articles in Category:Constituencies of the Lok Sabha doesnt have {{WP India}} banner. Shall I run TinucherianBot to add our project banner to them ? -- Tinu Cherian - 12:38, 17 July 2008 (UTC)
- These articles lack consistency. Each one has a different look and text in it(though all have correct data). I am saying this as consistency helps the reader find information easily. I still believe a bot can do a good job here. See, most of the information can be taken from Lok Sabha website. So ref will also remain the same. Why not have some bot build it for us? Yeah Tinu, go ahead. Include them under our banner. --gppande «talk» 12:48, 17 July 2008 (UTC)
I used the election commission for my sources, but I guess its the same. I can go ahead and at that source to. In the interest of consistency we have 2 versions. 1 with the 2004 results and 1 without. I'm not quite sure how to make the former. The election table links somewhere. But we can always get a bot to do that once the websites are input-ed. Lihaas (talk) 14:54, 17 July 2008 (UTC)
- Just had another question as I was uppdating the Chitradurga constituency page for Karnataka. For 1957 and 1951 there is not Chitradurga, but there is a Chitaldrug, which seems incredibly similiar. I have gone and added it onto the page, but does anyone think it is a different place. Ofcourse it stopped existing after '57 too. Lihaas (talk) 23:18, 17 July 2008 (UTC)
- Can you provide a direct link that shows this? I tried the link above but wasn't able to locate this issue. As far as I know, Chitradurga district has always existed. A few years ago, Davanagere district was created out of Chitradurga, but Chitradurga continues to exist as a district to this day. Thanks AreJay (talk) 01:54, 18 July 2008 (UTC)
Davanagere has existed sicne the 1970's http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Davangere_%28Lok_Sabha_constituency%29 But as for Chitradurga http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chitradurga_%28Lok_Sabha_constituency%29 it changed even before Karnataka was formed. Lihaas (talk) 00:59, 20 July 2008 (UTC)
- No, what I meant was Davanagere district (not the constituency) was carved out of Chitradurga district. Davanagere district only came into being in 1997. But to answer your question, yes, Chitaldrug is an archaic Raj-era name for Chitradurga. Thanks AreJay (talk) 00:38, 22 July 2008 (UTC)
Using a bot
To Salilb/Lihaas: I have a suggestion. If you can compile all the data in Excel, convert it to a CSV file, we can have a bot create the articles. Let me know. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 01:57, 22 July 2008 (UTC)
- Ganesh: Could you let us know the format for the CSV? Personally, I have no speed issues in creating the pages manually and we have only 3 states left. But if you say its faster with CSV and a bot, lets give it a try. Salilb (talk) 12:38, 22 July 2008 (UTC)
- I don't quite understand the high-funda technical stuff. But I can help if I could see some of example. Lihaas (talk) 15:55, 22 July 2008 (UTC)
Common layout/format
I've completed Kerala so that just leaves us with Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. Karnataka is being done by Lihaas. The problem with WB is that many articles have been done by P.K.Niyogi and the layout is different from other states. Should the remaining articles in WB be completed using the format used by P.K.Niyogi or the one we have used for other states? Salilb (talk) 10:04, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
- that's quite a nice format. Esp. witht he districts (of which only Karnataka and w.b. have). I guess its better to finish off the province with the same format. If the whole is diff, its at least best to keep the province the same. we can use a bot to format later.
- Also, we can set to work on this next. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_general_election%2C_2004 Lihaas (talk) 21:47, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
- Am not too keen on this, frankly. Are the details like no. of votes polled for each constituency for 2004 really required or even relevant considering there'll be elections again next year? Salilb (talk) 11:59, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
It exists in a half-way stage, just thought it would be better to finish it off. Your right it's close to 2009 (late 2008?? you never know), but it looks bad, esp. for wiki project india politics, to have a half-done page. Lihaas (talk) 00:42, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
Some suggestions / to do
As I was working on the Lok Sabha constituency pages, the following ideas cropped up:
- Perhaps on each city's page (for which there are wiki pages) we can mention a 'political' section with the MP link, as well as the MLA? a bot can do this.
- Also, for the LS pages that don't have the recent election results perhaps a bot can do this too.
- I have also mentioned SC/ST seats on the LS pages I have done. I would be nice to do that on other seats too.
- This is a biggie. I think we should we have Leg Ass election results too, much like the Lok Sabha. (Vidhan_Sabha pretty crappy article right now)
- Should we create a new page explaining an 'open seat' or is too obvious? We have pages for SC + ST
- Also are all the former states on Wikipedia? I listed them on my LS constituency pages. (MP + Karnataka)
- And finally: we the following political party pages would be good:
Soshit Samaj Dal, Sikh Pratinidhi Board, Mazdoor Parishad, Akhil Bhartiya Lok Tantrik Dal, Muslim league's (various), Rashtriya Janata Party, Indian National Congress - I (Maybe a sub-section of the inc), Peasants & Worker's Party, All India scheduled caste federation, Akhil Bharatiya Lok Tantrik Congress, Ambedkar National Congress, Kannada Paksha, Rashtriya Hindustan Sena Karnataka, Swarna Yuga Party, All India Indira Congress (Tiwari), Rashitriya Samajwadi dal, Socialist, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gyan_Singh, Republican Party of India (Khobragade), Himachel Vikas Congress, Common Weal League, Punjab Depressed Class League
And also the following politicians would be cool: Phoolchand Verma; Dileep Singh Bhuria
Lihaas (talk) 00:11, 22 July 2008 (UTC)
- I think each district could have a 'Politics' section listing and linking to all the LS constituencies within that district. This could be taken up by the Wikipedia:WikiProject Indian districts project. Salilb (talk) 13:16, 22 July 2008 (UTC)
- Support District articles are mostly poor. Any improvement is welcomed. --gppande «talk» 13:52, 22 July 2008 (UTC)
- What about for the Legis Assemb articles? should we do something with that?
- Also there is no page on the singh govt. there is one on bush admin. i think we should start something and improve with time. Lihaas (talk) 16:00, 22 July 2008 (UTC)
Yes MP and MLA could be added, along with the year, party, and %of votes received. I think there are provisions in the infobox too. But several things need to be factored first. How would a bot deal with cities where there are more than one legislators? What do you mean by "former states"? =Nichalp «Talk»= 13:44, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
- Once we're done with LS (almost) i imagine then we can use the MLA as the collaboration project. I was thinking to do it just for the current election (whenever that is) for each state. History will take too long.
- For cities with multiple MP's it can state the different MP's. For example, if a BOT takes the info from the constituency pages, then it should automatically say Mumbai - South, Mumbai - North, etc, etc.
- as for former states, i meant something like Vindhya Pradesh, Madhya Bharat, Mysore, etc. These came across my LS Constituent updates. Lihaas (talk) 00:49, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
Ridiculous POV
Hi I've just been browsing through the Hindustani and Carnatic singers and the POV is absolutely diabolical. Almost every article has little encyclopedic value but rather say what a great singer and success they were and how super fast they were. PLease can you look into it and sort some of them out. It is quite embarrasing to read some of them and reflects badly on the project that are supposed to care for them. Thanks ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 11:52, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

Ronosen and fifteen of his sock puppets were blocked as per Wikipedia:Requests for checkuser/Case/Ronosen. However, this guy uses high-tech tools and is avaoiding the block with numerous new sock puppets. One sock-puppet has written thus –
- Hi Priyanath, You have libeled our "Father" by labeling *him* as "puppet master". You could not be further wrong. Anyway now that we have understood very well the CheckUser mechanism (including secret HTTP interrogations of MAC, OS, cookies, Browser configs and other dirty cyber things), life is going to be interesting on this - and other- pages. (Do we hear the distant thunder of full Lock Down for this article). Anyway, please learn to count, "1 + 4 <> 1". (NB:The coincidence (1S + 4P). So many interesting Brahmo pages to vandalise, so little time. Have a nice day, and do you want fries with that :-) SonOfRonoSen (talk) 08:34, 15 July 2008 (UTC)
Those who have been blocked in the past have also blown hot and cold but very few have challenged Wikipedia’s basics in such a manner. I believe that in order to enforce the block, more Wikipedians, including administrators, have to take an interest in the matter. The Keshub Chunder Sen page is blocked till 26 July and there already are indications that the page would be vandalised after that. Failing major efforts on the part of Wikipedians, the block on the vandals becomes ineffective in practice.
priyanath and Ragib have so far done a wonderful job in showing the vandals the door and I look forward to their continued interest in keeping Wikipedia clean and healthy.

K. Banerjee Center of Atmospheric and Ocean Studies
K. Banerjee Center of Atmospheric and Ocean Studies is a gruesome mess. The gruesomeness is quite distinctive, too: it immediately reminded me of the deleted article on Prem C. Pandey, who perhaps not coincidentally is prominent within the article on the Center.
My gut feeling is that this is such a shambles that even if an article is worthwhile it should be started afresh. Should it be started afresh? Should it be deleted? -- Hoary 01:03, 27 July 2008 (UTC)

osmanistan
I jsut started an article on India/Pakistan history but im not sure where to publish it so others can edit ti better. its not too great right now, but it has a base. The Osmanistan article is an importnat part of [failed] partition history thats not up here yet, ya'll may want to look at it.Lihaas (talk) 02:02, 11 July 2008 (UTC)
- I have added a little inputs including an attempt to make the content neutral and factual. More references and inline citations may be required. --Bhadani (talk) 16:20, 13 July 2008 (UTC)
- Anyone here read this article (apart form the proponents of this article?). Please quote reliable sources and not fanciful quotes, and suspect websites. The article is a complete mess of conspiracy theories. ChiragPatnaik (talk) 20:17, 23 July 2008 (UTC)
- What conspiracy theories? At least the first 3 sources are good, the 4th I agree is not the best, will look for a abetter one? Could you 'citation needed' where its flawed? Lihaas (talk) 21:55, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
- Agreed that Osmanistan never came into being. It was one part of Rehmat Ali's (crazy) plan for a federation of 12 Muslim states in the Indian subcontinent. But that doen't mean we shouldn't include it. And from what I remember Hyderabad state almost did become South Pakistan, had it not been for Sardar Patel's decicive action. Anway If this issue has to be discussed frther, I suggest we move to the article's talk page?--Deepak D'Souza (talk • contribs) 04:38, 25 July 2008 (UTC)

- Hmmm. Alternate histories. I would say only o ne is credible. (The book reference). BTW, Anyone up for articles on Tejo Mahalaya? j/k. :) ChiragPatnaik (talk) 05:18, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
- Hmmm. Comming to alternate histories, yeah, think about it: I would need a passport to eat Hyderabadi Biryani. No j/k :-( --Deepak D'Souza (talk • contribs) 05:37, 25 July 2008 (UTC)

Dawn and the education institution are not credible? come on, in the india pages every online (and non-written) media outlet is quoted. Dawn is published too in pak.
ps- No passport for Hyderabad, we'd make it like nepal/bhutan ;) seriously, the whole world is racist to us, how many damn visas, eh? ;) Lihaas (talk) 22:29, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
Merge this article with Hyderabad State article. The state article already has a Hyderabad today section so we can say after partition this princely state was seen as a new area (just like East Pakistan) by few politicians and so can fit as a section. --gppande «talk» 00:16, 27 July 2008 (UTC)
- With Osmanistan redirect to the section. That would make sense, then. Lihaas (talk) 15:23, 28 July 2008 (UTC)
Quality Control
This is a broad request, but someone needs to be looking at the writing style of a lot of these articles. Look up Asiatic Lions, look up any Indian history article or articles about Indian clans and there will be some quality issues. The most common thing is that the language can be extremely stilted and argumentative. Make sure that articles do not have thesis, this is supposed to be a neutral source of information. Run-ons and hyper formal language like the use of the word "thus" was found on many of these pages. Articles to check:
Asiatic Lion (Conservation status entry)
Jaipur (look at the intense qualitative judgments the article uses)
Gujarat (check the "weather" conditions - too much authorship)
Overall, the main issue issue is that the writer is being too personal with his/her information. The information is sound, but it needs to be more of an Encyclopedia and not a Lonely Planet Travel Guide. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.90.6.2 (talk)
- I agree with you. The reason for this is that there are simply too many Indian articles and not enough full time contributors to contribute or update good articles, or even monitor low priority articles on a daily basis for content creep. =Nichalp «Talk»= 18:47, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
This kinda needs attention. The title of the article is a typical example of POV pushing. I think the article should be renamed Renaming of cities in India and more information about renaming should be included, not only the opposition. - Agree. Shoving 'controversy' into the article title is hardly NPOV. --Regents Park (paddle with the ducks) 14:07, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
- Indeed, WP:NPOV and WP:BLP trumps any consensus issues, so I'm moving it as a matter of priority. Ncmvocalist (talk) 15:15, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
- Good point. Hardly NPOV. Thanks. Ism schism (talk) 15:18, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

military of India sidebar
the military of India sidebar is using the triservices crest. That is used only for the Army Airforce and Navy and joint institutions like NDA etc.
It is not supposed to be used for paramilitaries et al.
Request you to change or tell me how and I will change the same.

Expert on India needed on Kattuthalaivasal
I was doing a bit of copy editing on this article and I noticed that it is badly referenced. I know little of the subject matter; possibly one of your Wikiproject members would know more. Please would someone take a look at the article for referencing and adding more information. -- Escape Artist Swyer Talk to me The mess I've made 22:41, 4 August 2008 (UTC)

This user has been adding unsourced religious demographic information to a number of Indian state and city articles which I believe to be overstating the percentage of Sikhs (eg. 14% in Mumbai). The problem is that I do not have access to the 2001 census and so cannot confirm this. If it is available online can someone please provide me with the URL? Thanks GizzaDiscuss © 23:38, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
- Not sure if it would help, I found some 1991 data links:
- Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 01:29, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
2001 census website: http://www.censusindia.gov.in/ but this does not give religious data at city level. Max u can drill down to district level. In case of Mumbai however, this might hold true as Mumbai is a district of Maharashtra. --gppande «talk» 14:26, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

Bharat Ek Khoj
The english translation of the Rgvedic hymn which features in the end credits of 'Bharat Ek Khoj' is not very correct. Especially the end where it is said -We should keep praying to God like that by offering ghee. Havi is offering in a homa or an oblation not exactly translated with 'ghee'. Can this be cleaned up by some Indologist or Sanskrit scholar please?
Thanks. -- Ramya (talk) 19:31, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
Are these sites encyclopaedic?
Hi. We have several dozen links to four domains, all related by ownership; at least one of these we know has been systematically spammed. See this discussion which includes links to the sites:
Your input on the usefulness of any of these links as encyclopaedic sources would be very much appreciated and I invite you to chip in on the WikiProject Spam talk page.
Thanks, --A. B. (talk • contribs) 18:45, 19 August 2008 (UTC)

Problems with the awards of the Indian government
I enter this notice here because I stumbled on a problem with the biography of famous Indian conservationist and tiger expert [Billy Arjan Singh]. Since I am not sure when anyone will stumble across my comment there, I thought I would post it for the benefit of those dedicated to improving Wikipedia's coverage of India.
Although I have no expertise whatsoever in matter related to India, tigers, or Billy Arjan Singh, I decided to try and address the notice asking for the page to be cleaned up by attempting to determine when Billy Arjan Singh was awarded the Padma Shri by the Indian government. I assumed this would be a simple matter of a little googling, but it turns out not to be. The Indian government's page does indicate that Billy Arjan Singh of Uttar Pradash province was awarded the Padma Shri in 2006, for conservation efforts[1][2]. Confusingly, Arjan Singh of the Uttar Pradash province received the Padma Shri in 1975, for civil service[3]. Since this info comes from the official Indian government website, and appears on the respective Wikipedia pages, one would expect that to end the discussion. However, numerous news and web articles on Billy Arjan Singh, published prior to 2006, indicate that he had been awarded the Pradma Shri already. Therefore, I leave the matter to editors with more expertise (or time on their hands) to resolve. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Chicagoshim (talk • contribs) 18:13, July 19, 2008
Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board
Does anyone think the "Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board" should have its own wikipage. It's importance is pretty high at the moment. Lihaas (talk) 08:33, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
- I don't think it is a good idea to hae a seperate article. But the Shrine board can have a subsection in the article on Amarnath temple. The issue is mentioned there so a small breif on the board could help.--Deepak D'Souza (talk • contribs) 11:36, 22 August 2008 (UTC)

Census Data
The census data is no longer available at censusindia.net but at censusindia.gov.in.
- The previous has 795 refs on wikipedia, but the latter has 200.
- There are also references to the Internet archive, linking to which I feel is not appropriate, since the website is live and accessible to all.
- The data on the new website is behind a (free) registration wall.
- I plan to start switching the URL's using pattern matching and replace to the base URL (since individual pages are not linkable) of the new website. e.g. this changes to this
Please comment. ChiragPatnaik (talk) 07:03, 25 August 2008 (UTC)
- I also ran across this URL which links to summaries of the major highlights of the census data. Again, this complicates the matter a bit. To further add to the complication. District level data is available as PDF's as well. I will generate a comprehensive district level listing's of PDF's for reference But a first step should be to link to the base url as sugested earlier, as the 404's are doing no one any service as a reference point. ChiragPatnaik (talk) 07:33, 25 August 2008 (UTC)
- Common problem with many Indian websites. I guess we need to hedge against such eventualities. WP:DEADREF mentions http://www.webcitation.org/ that could be given a try. But I'm not sure how it would handle Excel files. =Nichalp «Talk»= 12:27, 25 August 2008 (UTC)
- What about linking to the base URL to start with? And as is normal with Wikipedia, editors will start to populate with the exact links. I will generate a comprehensive listing of district wise data in PDF files, which can be be linked by the various editors. The excel data I think is not available any more. ChiragPatnaik (talk) 18:36, 25 August 2008 (UTC)

new article (Indian-American Caucus)
It would be nice to have an article about the Indian-American Caucus in the US Congress, especially since the nuke deal is in top gear right now (Indo-US civilian nuclear agreement). Lihaas (talk) 01:40, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
