Improvement: logical path for each page

It would be helpful if with each page a logical path could be provided, which allows to navigate from the detailed information to a general subject-page (and vice-versa) and to closely related information. This would add to the now completely flat structure of Wiki pages a tree-structure. Links can partly fulfill this need, but are less convenient (and often not provided).

I do not think that this can be constructed automatically, but it needs work from the page provider. Given the large amount of Wiki information, it would not be an easy task. But I am sure that people would take advantage of it as soon as the tools are available.

An example: the "TWiki" pages

  1. ^ https://twiki.cern.ch/twiki/bin/view/Atlas/WebHome
  2. ^ https://twiki.cern.ch/twiki/bin/view/Atlas/CodeDistribution

Printing

A nice feature would be the ability to print only the "main portion" of a wikipedia article (perhaps nicely formatted).

Currently, printing long articles waste a lot of paper.

Thanks

Double clicking search

Every time I go to the search bar I have to click it twice before I can type something in. I was wondering if you could look into that problem and fix it? why destroy something that works?

Searchbox on the right... It is supposed to be better, but please do listen to the users, and do not do as some others do, have it on the right side! There are far more pages where it is located on the normal side, to the LEFT! Some large searchengines do have it on the left, but those pages are not comperable, and are not usedin the same manner. A searchbox is not a searchbox is not a searcbox; as Miss Stein would have written. Why remove the language options? I speak 4 and use 8 languages. All scandinavians are able to read 4 languages.(Norwegian, danish, swedish and "nynorsk" Most of us comand at least 2 other languages. (English and german.) Residents of Finland should be able to read 5. ( To quite a large number islandic is not easy understandable. It is not a step forward. As wikipedia is based on contributions from individuals, to read in different languages of is a method of critical use of information. Do you wish to have this option as a "extra feature"? That diminnishes the source value of wikipedia. But, when changing something that works - and works well, maybe that was the changemakers plan? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.203.78.9 (talk) 09:23, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

size of online page

First of all, although some people don't regard Wikipedia as a proper source because of potential errors, I always refer to it first because often there is more information there than on other sites. Additionally, I know enough about "information" to know that a lot of it is inaccurate.

Is there any way that Wikipedia can narrow the Website page? Since I am an avid book reader, I have some difficulty reading across a "non-book" sized page.

Thank you. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 151.203.123.82 (talk) 00:16, 12 July 2010 (UTC)

Hidden comment

Hi,

Just to say that i won't move to the new interface if there is no "Hidden comment" function and custom toolbar = Dog meal.

I contributed to Wikimedia Strategic Planning, we discussed how to improve the editing experience and i think this "Improved interface" a good step in that direction. I also participated to discussions related to community health and unfortunately i find the absence of the "Hidden comment" function detrimental to it. "Hidden comment" is good tool for interpersonal communication between editors. Often tags don't leave room for additional comment so you are at adding them through hidden comments. "Hidden comment" is also very useful to remember editors of consensus reached in article talk page or within related project because people won't bother reading talk pages and the like. Absence of "Hidden comment" functionality make communication between editors more complex thus rendering collaborative work more difficult so not something good for community health. --KrebMarkt (talk) 14:12, 13 July 2010 (UTC)

Posting Articles to Social Media Sites

Searchbox

I prefer the searchbox on the left, for its placement on the top right corner is quite disturbing inasmuch as my eyes must describe a bigger angle from the middle of the screen to find it, which is even worse in large screens, and I don't see any reason for it to be consuming height space and pushing all the text a bit downwards, when it could be perfectly fitted in the left menu. Moreover the list of possible matches that scrolls down after the first letters are typed in really helps when one doesn't know the spelling of an article's title. This could be even improved by allowing an asterisk take the place of a string of characters; a slash followed by asterisks, the exact amount of letters as there are of asterisks; /*/ a word; or other meaningful combinations so that on can search for an entry by its last letters, or first and last skipping the middle. When hovering over external links in Wikipedia

Dear Wikipedia,

Thank you so much for this site. It is a pain having to open every page I like when reading an article in a new tab. I have a suggestion: When hovering over external links in Wikipedia, have a short summary appear in a pop-up box just above the link. This should not be a few words taken from the overview, since that will result in a "The battle of Lake Peipus was a decisive victory in the history of..." That doesn't enlighten anyone. Write a very short summary about every page... you should of course ask the community to help. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Silenzer12 (talkcontribs) 22:53, 14 July 2010 (UTC)

How about allowing non-logged-in users to select a skin?

It makes sense to require the user to be logged in to select more complicated preferences, but selecting the overall layout from a predefined set seems like something anybody should be able to do. Not R (talk) 13:35, 15 July 2010 (UTC)

There are technical reasons why this is not possible. Basically, using another skin will require 2 copies of a page to be cached. Thus giving people an option to change the skin, would result in almost every page to be cached twice instead of once. That would mean we would have to double the capacity of the caching servers, which would be a very costly operation. And once you give people one finger, they want a hand, so before you know it, there would likely be 3 and then 10 preference options for anonymous users (so 10 times the caching capability would be required). There is a reason why registering an account is a good thing, and having access to preferences is one of those reasons. Having said that, some more "you need to register an account in order to use this option" might be a good idea. If you know locations where such a message should be listed, please pass along your suggestion. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 19:53, 15 July 2010 (UTC)

Wiki's Own Discussion Forum (Under each Subject)!

Dear Popular Wikipedia:

I think it would be a great idea to have a "Discuss" button under each individual subject matter. I really like to see a place where the readers can exchange information and may be new ideas.

The "discuss" (this matter) button should be an URL/Link to another page where people can log in and then discuss about that particular matter. For instance if we are reading about Beethoven or Edison or Paris we then should be allowed to share our information or experiences in regard to that particular subject matter without adding info to the original Wiki page. (To avoid creating unnecessary volume). This will open up a new frontier with limitless possibilities. I think it will be really good. The forum of this kind will have to manage/moderate itself. People should not discuss off-subject matters or use strong language and/or insult other users. As it is now the Wiki pages contain valuable information which many users have taken the time to provide/share. I do not see any problem in having such forums except the details of its technical side. (how it is setup, what kind of coding will be used etc.). Or redirect to a Blog. Please ignore this message if such forum already exists. I have seen the "MyTalk" page but I don't think it is the same thing?

Thank You Very Much! Best Regards; Mehdi B. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Matey1 (talkcontribs) 17:21, 15 July 2010 (UTC)

Wikipedia as source of link

Dear Sir,

My name is Edy Sasongko, lives in Yogyakarta Indonesia not far from the Prambanan biggest Hindu's temple in Indonesia. I am Wikipedia mania user. Any idea or everything that I want to know always use this website as main resources. My sons and daughters who are still studying in high school and university also never forget to find information related their studies through this site. In short this site really useful and helpful for everybody.

Recently, I developed website which called Flight Calculator and other tools. The url is http://www.xtools4u.com. This site is primarily helping people to find solution relating to the flight, travel, trips, etc. The database contains more than 9000 airports worldwide. I use Wikipedia as the main resources for the city name or place.

To be more complete for my website, could Wikipedia provide download for the database that I need? or How could I request database related to my project? Is it possible for me?

I think that's all for now. I am looking forward to your response.

Thank you and best regards, Edy —Preceding unsigned comment added by Esasongko (talkcontribs) 03:52, 19 July 2010 (UTC)

concept of media reality show

Dear sir-

I am Kaushal Tiwari(member of Writer Association) have a reality show concept that is basically based on Journalist, i am providing the brief detail of concept. If you don't mind i need your 10 minute of time thats why i can explain the whole detail of the show Thanks.

'CONCEPT' We propose a Reality show, which will get the next breed of journalists together on a common platform, and provide an opportunity to give their best. The journalists will have to select a story, which will centre on some of the current happenings, or hot topics, and end up finding solutions to the issues underlying this topic. The Reality Show will entitle the Journalist to question the main protagonists of this topic, either at their own place , or in the studio in order to find his / her solutions. The availability of these protagonists should be ensured by the Channel Partners. There will be a panel of Judges, who will judge the journalists. Also, the mass public will be participants in this by sending back their votes, favoring those candidates, whom they perceive to be the best If singers or dancers can be made into public Idols, why not journalists. After all, the media is a strong force in India, which is keeping democracy alive in India. Our budding journalists should find a place in the sun.

Languages

Note; this if from the archive. It was archived due to no response - but I just want to try it one more time to see if I get any response... cheers

Comment: I like that the languages section on the left hand side is hidden now by default - it is not something that is used often, so showing those (sometimes 20+) links clutters the page unnecessarily.

Idea: Ok, first I am going to make a few assertions based on no evidence... In general;

  • Not many people use the language links (see comment above)
  • Of the people that do, they do not use it very often.
  • Of the people that do, they only use a few (say 2 or 3) languages.

If what I guess to be true is, then showing all the languages to a logged in user is showing too much information. I think it should only show the ones you are interested in.

For example, lets say I am interested in two languages; English (main) and Japanese (secondary). Every now and then I will want to look at the Japanese version. So I expand the languages section (as I already mentioned, I like this part). But then I need to find the Japanese link. If it is a good article, then it will have many links. So it will be somewhere about two thirds at the bottom of a two page list. Not easy to find.

So my suggestion is something like this: Have a means to specify the languages you are interested in. Perhaps a preference section. Then the languages bar will show those languages that you are interested in and hide the rest. If the language is not available, it will tell you that it is not available. By saying that it is not available (explicit), it avoids the current situation where you are not sure if it is not available, or you just cant find the link in the 50+ item language list. It would also make it easier for people to link two existing articles. So maybe the language section could look like this:

(+) Languages

(note, that plus sign (a triangle in the current vector skin) at the front of 'languages' would let you expand the full list of languages). If a Japanese version (in the above example) is not available/linked, it would provide visual feedback somehow (maybe it wont be a link, or it will have some extra text).

Watch

I don't see the advantage, especially for the new user, of changing the simple words "Watch" or "Add to watch list" to a cryptic symbol. It makes it hard even for me, and I've been using and editing WP for several years. Zaslav (talk) 01:47, 17 July 2010 (UTC)

Agreed, this is a step backwards. A while ago they changed "+" to "New section" in talk pages for exactly the same (good) reason. Also, star now means both "featured article" and "favourite". Another reason why we should change back to "Watch"/"Unwatch". 221.47.185.5 (talk) 00:36, 19 July 2010 (UTC)
I agree; icons can be good as visual shortcuts if you are familiar with an interface, but if you are not, spelling it out is better. I also discovered that it apparently does not have an alt text (or more correctly, its alt attribute is explicitly set to the empty string) so if you don't load images, it's not visible at all in Opera, not even as a blank square. This led me to believe, briefly, that the option to "watch" an article had been removed. -- magetoo 04:22, 22 July 2010 (UTC)

Editing toolbar's "Help" tool

The Editing toolbar's "Help" tool could use two additions to its "References" sheet.

  • The "Additional use of same reference" entry is incomplete; its second column (the "What you type" column) lacks the "Page text." that appears in the third column (the "What you get" column).
  • The "Display references" entry is incomplete; its third column should show the superscripted "a" and "b" that would appear after the caret, representing the two sample citations shown to be using ref name="test".

Advanced editing toolbar

I have two problems with the current layout of the Advanced editing toolbar.

One problem is the right-alignment of the "find and replace" icon. With all the other icons left-aligned, it took me a long time to find that isolated icon on a 16:9 screen.

My other problem is that the words "Format" and "Insert" seem bizarre. First, they appear to be tools; then, they appear to be disabled tools; then, when I'm browsing in Opera, a double-click on them gives me a shortcut menu, from which, finally, I realize that they're simply labels. What a waste of time. Worse yet, the layout of this toolbar seems to conflict with the labels. It's clear that the only "insert" tools are to the right of the "Insert" label, and there are barely-visible vertical lines separating that section from the ones to its left & right. However, if we apply that observation to the remaining icons and the "Format" label, then we'd have to conclude that the Heading, Big, Small, Superscript, and Subscript tools are not formatting tools. This makes no sense to me. If you've found those labels to be helpful to many people, then please make it clearer that they are not tools and to which tools they apply; otherwise, please remove them.

Thanks, --Rich Janis (talk) 07:57, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

Bogus Editorial Remarks

Dear Wikipedia:

With some frequency, I am seeing messages, like this one from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_tools_to_create_Live_USB_systems:

"This article's use of external links may not follow Wikipedia's policies or guidelines. Please improve this article by removing excessive and inappropriate external links or by converting links into footnote references."

The article in question is entitled, "List of tools to create Live USB systems." It is a list. Various items in the list are hyperlinked directly to other articles.

I love footnotes. But in this case, footnotes would add an unnecessary intervening step. They would also confuse the presentation and diminish the user's experience. If the creator had followed the wishes of the benighted editor who added this remark, then for every link that I wanted to follow, I would have had to jump to the bottom of the page to find the link that I would intend to open in a separate tab. Then back up to the list; then back down to the footnotes; etc.

I send you this remark because these pseudo-editorial remarks have infected a remarkable number of Wikipedia pages. As I have become more consciously aware of them, I have also found them more distracting. Sometimes such remarks linger for years, without anyone other than the original "editor" finding it especially important to administer the prescribed medication to a healthy page.

In lieu of a system in which self-appointed overseers apparently have free rein to mark up wiki pages with their notions of purity, I suggest that such editorial remarks themselves be submitted as tentative or proposed, visible not in full text but in the form of an icon or other indicator (e.g., "Editor Requests Improvements"), to which likeminded individuals can turn if they wish to get lost in the arcana together -- without, that is, screwing up the ordinary user's experience.

Yours,

Ray Woodcock —Preceding unsigned comment added by Raywood (talkcontribs) 13:05, 16 July 2010 (UTC)

The notes are present exactly to make you aware of any deficiencies in the article and to encourage you to improve upon them. It might not be 'pretty', but at least you know. You call it "notion of purity", but much of the press and users would call lack of them "being unreliable". It is a choice. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 21:16, 22 July 2010 (UTC)

This reply substantially fails to address the concerns I presented. It is also unpersuasive. Neither the placement of the admonitions nor their content actually does anything to improve the entry. If you want to footnote things, why not start here? Put a simple note up top (e.g., "Improvement Request") and link it to a more complete explanation down below. If you want to notify *me* in particular, then email me.

Oh, by the way. The "Raywood" page does not exist because some hyperactive Wikipedia editor deleted it after I created it.

I would love to give you some positive feedback on the new features, but this one negative aspect is so awful that I don't care about the other stuff. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Amaling (talkcontribs) 00:18, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

This is a bug in Apple's program. You will have to direct your complaint to Apple. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 21:07, 22 July 2010 (UTC)

Right Click Menu Open in new Tab

Right click on Discussion tab (say) does not permit opening in a new tab on IE 8. Not sure why, maybe the alt key? But it is a pain not being able to easily open the Article, Discussion and History in different tabs. (Works in Firefox.) Tuntable (talk) 01:23, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

Space between paragraphs

Can we *please* have some more space between paragraphs. Particularly as most pages used super scripts for references. The paragraphs disapear, making it hard to read. Or maybe just indent the first line 6 spaces. Tuntable (talk) 01:23, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

It is expected behavior that superscripts change the space between lines in a paragraph. On all browsers but IE, this is corrected to not occur however. Unfortunately, there was no good way to correct this issue on Internet Explorer. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 21:05, 22 July 2010 (UTC)

Take me back and New features links on top start to get annoying

With all respect to the developers of the new features and all the time they've spent on it, the Take me back and New features links may not be that relevant to be on the very top of every Wikipedia page. I think they may very well be put in My preferences now. Mikael Häggström (talk) 11:12, 22 July 2010 (UTC)

Search box and vertical space

There are two big issues with me aboutthe search box placement in the new design. One is that there is now less vertical space for each and every wikipage you go to, and all the 'management' links are no longer grouped together on the left. Before unless you wanted to deal sepcifically with a page (edit, discuss, view history) you always went to the left. Now that's no longer true. In addition with the big push these days for widescreen monitors removing vertical space doesn't make much sense. It just seems another case of a popular website going the way of all flash no function and earning nothing but website rage from it's (former) satisfied users. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jedimmel (talkcontribs) 18:55, 22 July 2010 (UTC)

Hello, I would be fascinatingly glad if some kind of "theme" options might be added.

That is, for example, I have a serious problem reading on white background since it is harmful to my eyes. When I log in, the wiki system can automatically recall my preferences and open wiki in white font over black background. And I will be logged in for weeks without being asked password like gmail style. Daily Article

Hi guys,

I love love LOVE Wikipedia of course... but...

There have been SO MANY daily articles on:

1) Video games 2) Cricket players

Really, I mean really! Out of almost 3.5 million articles, these two subjects are of the most importance to you? There's no way the daily articles have been chosen randomly; if I had the patience I would go back through my email for the past year and count the video game and cricket articles but I think my memory is serving well enough.

Any explanation? Aren't there more important events/people/wars/dinosaurs/inventions/cultures/diseases/marine animals you could be introducing to people? It's a great opportunity, as I bet lots of people read the daily article, and I feel that the opportunity is being squandered.

Thanks for your consideration,

Molly Payne

Metapages and visual distinction

Under the old Monobook theme, pages for encyclopedia articles had text on a white background, while metapages (Wikipedia project namespace, help, etc.) had a pale blue background. This gave a subtle but extremely useful hint as to whether one was browsing in the encyclopedia proper or "other stuff". This appears to have gone away. At this time, the only difference between a metapage and an article is a few bits of text -- the label in the tab and the namespace prefix. The lack of broader visual feedback is a step backward. While I realize that colored backgrounds can pose an accessibility issue, I'm sure there's *something* that could be done to still make metapages more visually distinct from articles. —DragonHawk (talk|hist) 00:29, 28 July 2010 (UTC)

Regarding Monobook custom styles (user-modified CSS)

Regarding these statements on the "New Features" page:

"Remember that with the skin change, your monobook JavaScript will need to be copied to User:Schweiwikist/vector.js to continue working.

Your custom monobook styles will no longer be applied. You can add custom CSS for vector in User:Schweiwikist/vector.css. "

Huh?? Why should something that I worked hard on myself, to improve my user experience, be disabled? (In Firefox, anyway. See below.)

With Firefox 3 and the 4 beta, my Monobook CSS has lost the Georgia font I find so readable, even with "new features" off (i.e., the Monobook skin active). Safari 5 doesn’t show this anomaly, my Monobook CSS still works fine.

My Wikipedia user-experience is just fine, thanks. I don’t need anything "fixed". I’d be happy to tweak a vector CSS too, if it’ll help, but I’d rather avoid having to.

UPDATE: Looks like this bug has been worked on, so thanks. My Monobook skin is behaving again.

UPDATE: It’s malfunctioning again, but only with Firefox, not Safari, as before.
---Schweiwikist (talk) 10:27, 28 July 2010 (UTC)

UPDATE: Clearing the browser cache and closing a lot of browser windows re-resolved the issue, so it’s a RAM issue with Mozilla, apparently, that’s all.

Dictionary

As well as using Mac OS X 10.6 and Safari 5, I also use the Apple Dictionary application, mainly for Wikipedia, and delighted to have this as a sub-browser to view anything published by Wikipedia.

Recently, probably to do with your new features, on Dictionary itself, since Mac OS X Snow Leopard, all Wikipedia content is truncated at the first page. There is no scrollbar. The type or visuals are cut off at the bottom of the screen, in mid-line, or across an image! This makes it completely unusable.

Maybe Dictionary needs updating, or you could be aware of Dictionary, and ensure it works the way it used to? I can't seem to find a way to change the new features to let it work

I came across the latest Signpost recently by accident so I do not have a link to it. There is an article in it about WP's standing in a customer satisfaction survey, 47th out of 200. One of the reasons given for WP's high standing, along with that of Google, was the contancy of the user interface. MySpace and FaceBook had lower standings and one of the reasons given for that was their ever-changing user interface. Do we really want to shoot ourselves in the foot by implementing the new look? The Dinner Party (2010)

Luke has a good job, great friends and a fantastic social life. He lives in his dream flat in London, where he was born and raised.

Jessica lives in the Lancashire countryside, she is well-liked, pretty and has many friends to spend her time with. Both are unhappy, despite their fortunate lives. Until Now! Luke has allowed us access into his life, as he says goodbye to the hustle and bustle of London and travels up north to be with his one true love, Jesse.

We follow Jesse and Luke as they begin living together as a real couple, without dreading Sunday nights and Lukes journey back to London. We follow this dreamy couple as they begin to live their own personal dream, of sharing each moment together.

Jesse has arranged a surprise dinner party in Luke’s honour and has invited several friends to welcome him into village life, which is an innocent and loving thing to do, until it descends into a nightmare that simply doesn’t want to end.

As the alcohol flows freely, tempers begin to flare and the conversation gets heated, and then just one more unwelcomed guest; a guest that insists on joining the party and delivering a brand of brutal truth that captures the attention of the rowdy bunch and one that is about to unlock the very darkest of secrets.

Fly on the wall feature length mocumentary.

input elements

Since you are defining the colors of the background for stuff like input boxes, it is also necessary to define the colors of the foreground. My system uses a dark theme with white fonts and while I can read what I am typing here right now, it is impossible to read whay I type in the search box. So the search box, and maybe some other fields that you had customized, need to set the forground color, while leaving the rest untouched. Generating Automatic Emails , maybe?/ Discouraging Criticisms?

I am not very experienced as an editor.

Sometimes I make changes or start new pages and it seems almost automatically a more experienced editor, some how puts a great big box around querying what I have written. There was something about a smackbot which was almost nonsensical. I was aware that I had not done the info in the regular style but from my knowledge I was putting additional accurate info on Wikipedia with some links which may help others and is also a start for others who are more technical than me to choose to edit.

Now two points.

1. Can the query/threaten to remove comments be written a little more positively, so as not discourage people like me from posting again?

2. When something is queried in such away can an option for notification by automatic email be preselected?

In this case I have offered answers which may or may not be acceptable, however had I not checked back, I would not have known about the query/criticisms my posts had generated.

Name searching

I've just spent a lot of time searching for the answer to a crossword question. Q) Laura --- Giacomo. A) San. Key-in Laura returns 10 suggestions and none are any good. Select Laura and still get nowhere. Once I found the 1st letter 'S' and keyed Laura S, the correct answer appeared. The old system would've given a page where I could've selected Laura as a christian name and looked at all of them. Obviously somewhere between the two would be good. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Molbrum (talkcontribs) 12:40, 1 August 2010 (UTC)

Comment: New language menu is especially problematic on Opera Mini mobile browser where the language menu can not be opened at all. I don't know how many people really misses that but I have personally used to seek translations quite often at Wikipedia. Moreover, it is easier to find article first in your own language and then see if there's more written in English. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Serola (talkcontribs) 09:29, 2 August 2010 (UTC)

Idea: Ok, first I am going to make a few assertions based on no evidence... In general;

--Boy.pockets (talk) 13:47, 29 July 2010 (UTC)

There are a lot of people who are not a native english speaker and just cross checking information or editors looking for pics. Hiding their way back wouldn't be so helpful. --Biezl (talk) 16:36, 31 July 2010 (UTC)

[1]

What is RICEF? Many a times asked in interviews! Unfortunately a lot of people fail to answer a simple question, even though working on it for years.

You usually come accross the word RICEF when searching for SAP ABAP Developer jobs. RICEF isn't a standard SAP acronym. It's not defined by SAP like we have ABAP, ALV, etc. It's a comon term used to describe five areas of technical developments in SAP.

RICEF stands for Reports, Interfaces, Conversions, Enhancements, Forms. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 168.189.10.1 (talk) 23:43, 3 August 2010 (UTC)

Not able to add a jpg photograph I have already uploaded to Wikimedia Commons into an article

I am clearly embarrassed to confess that after doing quite a bit of work on a page for the artist Jerome Myers (my grandfather)with a somewhat time consuming learning process, today I prepared a couple of graphics of my grandfathers work that I wanted to interest into the article.

After a morning of effort I finally learned enough about Wikimedia Commons and what I needed to do to properly upload them, that that task was completed. I thought it would be a fairly simple matter, knowing the exact file name to place the images into the article. Your new Wikipedia user interface seemed clear and had been quite helpful earlier, but it is now almost 4 hours later and in spite of reading help files and such, I still haven't figured out the secret of doing it. I first tried clicking on your icon for the picture gallery which inserted the following:

But I couldn't find the right way to enter the file name which I knew to replace "Example.jpg" It seemed to want me to upload the graphic again which didn't seem to make sense. It also would take me out of Edit mode.

In further reading I think I may want to use "frame" to insert the picture with the original dimensions? Anyway I am lost and wondering if my degree from Columbia University even guarantees I can tie my own shoe laces these days. Maybe age has done me in. But this process doesn't seem clear enough as presented. Any help would be appreciated. I do greatly admire the work Wikipedia is doing.

Comment on Wiki article on "stellar aberration"

This write-up makes frequent reference to the "true position" of the stars. In my opinion, the true position of distant stars is not knowable. This is because the "true velocity" of the Earth (or the telescope carried by the Earth) is not knowable. The latter would include effects of motion of our galaxy toward a "great attractor," possible motion of the great attractor toward something else, etc. I do not know how you want to fix this, but it needs fixing. Reference to the "true position" of the stars is as obsolete a concept as the nineteenth century reference to the "fixed stars."

What has happened to the A-Z functionality previously located on the Main Page? Please tell me that you are not REMOVING features. Jerry Rice and the media.

I don't recall which magazine I read about Jerry Rice early in his career but I never forgot the commendation they gave him which was: Jerry Rice has three speeds: Fast, Very Fast and Gone. Having seen him play and beat my Chicago Bears Team in the playoffs one year when the 49ers won the championship, it was all too true. Besides that, he was always a sportsman and a gentleman beside being one of the alltime greatest football players America ever saw.

Show changes

Thanks for fixing the frustrating "only one set of diffs per save" situation. A much smaller annoyance is that there's no hiding diffs that you're done with, until the edit is complete. (Maybe i let edits go on too long w/o saving?) If it were easy for you, i'd like to get what i need out of the classic "yellow-/green-background" diffs, or out of the interleaved many-colors additions/moves/deletions view, then either turn off that feature or stop looking at its results, since the window full of preview, two-column diffs, interleaved diffs, and edit pane (followed sometimes by a long list of templates (which i probably never consult) followed by the indication of existing or non-existing Cats sometimes turns into a burdensome intra-window navigation problem.
But you are doing great; many thanks.

Pop-up box when selecting a direct link

The Problem: I like to consider myself an information fiend. I always use Wikipedia to gather as much information as possible on whatever subject I am currently researching. I usually click on numerous pages at a time so that I can gather a substantial amount of information that is related to the subject at hand. For example, I will often click on a link (The Battle of Gettysburg) that is included in the introduction of the topic I am researching (The Civil War). I often find that the information I needed (on The Battle of Gettysburg) is usually included in the first couple sentences of that (The Battle of Gettysburg) pages introduction. As a result, I usually wind up with five to six additional pages (tabs/windows) of content all related to my primary search. Although this is most definitely the premise behind the direct links to other pages, I find it to be rather time consuming (which you may be hoping for) and easily avoidable.

The Solution: Recently, I was reading an article on ESPN.com about how the New York Yankees had just acquired Lance Berkman before the trade deadline. So while reading the original article (or The Civil War in the aforementioned example) I clicked on a direct link (Lance Berkman) (or The Battle of Gettysburg in the aforementioned example), which opened a pop-up box with Lance Berkman’s 2010 statistics. Rather than opening up a new page I was able to gather all the information I was looking for with as little effort as possible. Wikipedia may want to consider offering a similar feature to allow its readers to sift through the information it provides quickly and easily. I believe that it would be beneficial for Wikipedia and its users if you were to include a pop-up box with a brief synopsis of the direct link (The Battle of Gettysburg) with the option to “Read more”. If what I’m saying doesn’t make any sense at all then try it out for yourself. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 206.192.99.130 (talk) 18:20, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

Expecting an enhancement of "Book Creator" Application in Print/Export tab

Hi, I am Manoj Hirwani. Your newly introduced Print/Export application in wikipedia is pretty awesome and is very much useful to make all the web pages into a book. It's really an innovative and appreciable idea. Thanks a lot!!

While using the "Book Creator" application, I encountered a problem: Coming to "Book Creator" application, links that are stored as book, are avaiable only in the system that too only in the browser it is created. If I tried to clear all the private data of my browser, then books created in my system are also get deleted. I feel this will happen only if data related to "Book Creator" application is stored in form of cookies (Which is temporary). This creates dependency of data storage with user's browser cookies data, which is restricted access to end user to access his/her created books from another system in world.

What I am going to suggest is : Please store the "Book Creator" application data based on the logged account information remotely in your servers, so that an end user can access his/her created books any where from the world which is not restricted.

This will be achieved only if the dependency between data and browser settings is eliminated and make a dependency between data and login account information.

Hope this will be done as soon as possible.

Thanks,

V N Manoj Hirwani Majeti

Width of page template

For such a content-heavy website, the page template is extremely wide. I usually view in 1366px which I guess is pretty wide but 1280px is fairly standard these days. 1024px is more manageable but less popular than widescreens now. In the wider resolution I am having to read lines of text that stretches in many cases almost the entire width of the screen, which I don't have to in other content/text based sites. I'm aware I can use accessibility tools like Readability to customise the pages to my own preferences, but I shouldn't have to. Has Wikipedia learnt nothing from how newspaper websites have developed over the years? --Thoughtcat (talk) 10:38, 19 August 2010 (UTC)

Search box (Have read explanation)

Hi,

I think the search box should be placed right on top of the page - as it now is - but at the centre or slightly to the left as opposed to the right side, as the current placement forces the user to move the cursor a long way after typing the web address or clicking a bookmark link.

You cannot go by general search box placement research, as the search box is of secondary importance on most sites whereas wikipedia's is the key navigation element. There is a reason why google's isn't on the far right side.

Best regards,

problems with narrow windows

With a narrow browser window the "History" option completely disappeared. When I maximized it you could see it suddenly slide in from the right. Note to "designers": because it can be done with javascript does not mean it should be. And you really should avoid making assumptions about window widths if at all possible.

That was it for me. I've had trouble finding things ever since the new design rolled out... I much prefer the old boxes-drawn-around-things look.

(But note: I typically run firefox with custom colors, so if you've got some UI design hints in the background colors, I often don't see them).

Print/export --> Printable version tweek

Greetings,

While totally cognizant of the likely work that's gone into updating the functionality of Wikipedia 'publishing' feature(s), there is one last one that has bugged me for some time. It has continued to be annoying enough that I thought I would finally raise your awareness regarding it, and see if I couldn't get it tweeked. i.e. upon selection of the 'Printable version' feature when interested in generating hardcopy for a particular article, I am requesting that it be possible to publish without inclusion of the 'Content' (listing of the section headers) section. Inclusion of the 'Content' section results in giant gaps in the documents that are generated. It results in giant spaces on the first page of every document that is then printed. It is such an annoyance that I find it necessary to manually copy/paste article conent into other documents used to express articles in print.

Thanks Much, Cheers —Preceding unsigned comment added by Odoncaoa (talkcontribs) 21:48, 24 August 2010 (UTC)

Building Great Minds vs KILLINGS of the MINDLESS

I for one have NO INTEREST in things I can not change...like bombings & killing in our world.

It is true the world is in ruins, BUT there is no need to promote the dark side of our life here.

There are way too many GREAT THINGS to bring attention to without going to the dark side on our Wiki MAIN PAGE. I am far more interested in what goes on in the private workshops, garages,& basements of the BIG MINDS of THINKERS & DOERS! Leave the SMALL MINDS to build bombs and kill each other. The rest of us are looking for the PROMOTION of our GREAT MINDS of this planet.

What happened to the edit buttons?

It is a fairly infrequent occurrence that I feel the need to edit something, so I honestly have no idea how long they've been gone for, but I just now noticed a comma which was wrong wrong wrong, and I thought to myself, Thank goodness this is Wikipedia, the one place I don't have to sit back and take this sort of irritation! Unfortunately when I looked for the edit button, it was nowhere to be found. Do I have to be logged in, or is it just thoroughly hidden these days from casual site users? At any rate, spending more than a minute or two trying to fix a tiny comma is outside of my realm of reason, though I fully realize I am deflating my own case by going to the trouble to relate my tale of woe here instead. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.191.151.236 (talk) 05:40, 26 August 2010 (UTC)

Internet Explorer 7

I've read the various comments of others regarding IE rendering the page size in such a manner not suitable for them but didn't find any reference to the issue I'm experiencing with IE . My question is in regards to the way my version of IE (v7) fails to highlight both the Note or Reference number ( such as [1] ) and the actual Note or Reference text associated with it. My every-day browser, Firefox, renders both of these in a nice, highlighted-blue color once the number is clicked. It's really sharp and I commend the developers for the great design of Wikipedia. My question ( finally ): Is there a setting on Internet Explorer I need to set in order to have it render the Notes/References in the same fashion as does Firefox? Thank you for a marvelous site. Wikipedia Rocks!

As a modest webmaster struggling with style sheets, page layouts and SQL query strings I just have to say that this site is a wonderful peace of work! Clean pages, easy navigation, exceptional content! I could go on! When do they find time to change to font sizes? :_) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.60.69.69 (talk) 01:58, 28 August 2010 (UTC)

Search Box

I think for the search box to be more effective it needs to keep its place. It's a pain to scroll from the bottom of and article to the top just to make a new search. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.175.28.130 (talk) 18:36, 27 August 2010 (UTC)

I agree with the above. During the test phase, I tried Beta for a while, and turned it off because of the increased scrolling to get to the search box. Very annoying. With the old location there was a higher chance that the search box would still be on the screen if you wanted to jump somewhere else. Remember that Wikipedia is a search-based site, not a typical website! Maybe a possibility is to have the left hand column non-scrolling, including the search box, and a a smaller scrolling box in the left hand column for anything that doesn't fit on a single screen (lists of languages, etc).Fh1 (talk) 14:38, 29 August 2010 (UTC)

The info

Hello,

My name is Piotr Finder and I was in Polish National Swimming Team for Paralympics in 1988. I have won three gold medals and it is listed on your site, although there is no article with my name. Would you be interested to have it and if yes, please let me know so I can prepare it for you, and also I can attach the photos. Thank you for your time. Your website is my favorite one. Great information.

Commons should really include pictures from articles in all languages

When reading an article in any language, when you click on the Commons link, you would expect to see the combined pictures that appear in all language versions of that article. In most cases this isn't true and you have to manually visit that article's page in each of the available languages, as some pictures are only to be found in certain languages.

Perhaps I'm not getting this right, but shouldn't media in the Commons contain media that is found relating to that article, irrespective of language, so if you just want to see all the available pictures, you can do so without having to search through the different versions (languages) of the article? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 192.76.7.248 (talk) 23:07, 7 September 2010 (UTC)

Two Login Pages

I have my watchlist bookmarked, but I don't always prefer to be logged in with cookies. I tend to click the bookmark, and I'm swept to a page that tells me I'm not logged in, and that I should log in by clicking on another link. I do so, and then I can log in. That's fantastic and all, but this middle-man page seems to be an inefficient resource. I would almost suggest that the "you're not logged in" warning page have the login/pswd fields on the same page. I know very well that I'm not logged in. And simply to dissuade any suggestions of the sort, I do not wish to bookmark the log in page. Just a small suggestion to increase Internet efficiencies. – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 04:09, 9 September 2010 (UTC)

Images in articles from different languages

It's really strange why images are limited by the language they're in. This shouldn't be a barrier. I'm speaking about images that are not in the commons. e.g. the image that is in the OpenCL article, it's not a very liberal license and it's likely to not to be included in wikimedia commons. Now it's available on the english wikipedia but not on other languages e.g. french, German,... This is very wasteful because for each language there should be uploaded an IDENTICAL image!! Such a waste. Because I didn't want to have to do uploading of restricted images, I didn't ad the image in the translation I wrote. I would have If I could just link to the image from the english article with it's english name (no problem with that). Please stop this waste and let pictures in wikipedia articles be used cross language by their original name. (If you want an original name, you could always introduce extra links.) Book Creator Suggestion

This is quite a specific suggestion. I think the new design looks and works great, and I would like to congratulate everyone who been working on it. It would be quite useful however, if links I have already added to a book are highlighted in some way so that I don't have to hover over them to check. This is not urgent, but it would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Search bar location

This is probably a fairly popular complaint, but I don't like the new placement of the search bar.

With the main menu on the left, and with English text being naturally left-aligned, having the search bar on the left is a good decision. With it on the right, and especially with the now-ubiquitous widescreen monitors, having the search bar on the right involves a lot of unnecessary mousing.

I think Wikipedia is excellent and having been a teachr for nearly 40 years, I use it daily, so much so that I attempted to create an article for inclusion on three new scientific terms. However, for the first time I have encountered concerns with it as I've found the feedback poor, both difficult to use and find, and have received little help. I do hope it becomes more 'user friendly' in this context soon. Thanks [[[User:1952socrates|1952socrates]] (talk) 10:26, 12 September 2010 (UTC)]

I'm sick of the fact that I have to log in in order to hide this awful, awful change. Who the hell thought it was a good idea to hide so much crap behind menus in the edit toolbar? Please make it easier still to edit

Hi team. Wikipedia is great. Thanks. However, there's lots of small text-bugs. The biggest threshold I have to editing is looking up the [edit] button and going through the text in edit-mode, which does not correspond well with where the error (that I try to correct) is. I predict that wiki-editing would boom if:

- editing was possible at the right-click of a mouse
- The edit text was Exactly like the read text, at the expense of the wiki markup.

Thus: I spot an error, I right-click (or something similarly super-simple), an exact version of the page shows up, only editable, I correct the error. Maybe this edit-mode could exist in parallel with the more extensive Edit-mode you have at the moment, as the latter allows inter-article relation and referencing (et c). Then I'd help more. Thanks for a great site. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 129.67.76.27 (talk) 15:41, 14 September 2010 (UTC)

Second the above request

This poster has it exactly. Cruising thru pages, i often spy a minor typo and edit the page just for that. Lately I have found it much too much trouble to find the word. I have had thoughts similar to this poster's Right-click edit would be good--and might obviate the need for your [Edit] sections. Another way: to be able to highlight a word in the main article and have that highlight preserved in the Editing session--or have the Editing session appear already scrolled to that line. There are many ways, but the poster has identified a real need: make it a small chore to correct small errors. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Cab.jones (talkcontribs) 21:30, 15 September 2010 (UTC)

Pronunciation

Dear Editor,

In all articles, you provide the correct pronunciation using IPA standards. However, most people will click on it expecting the website to pronounce the word for them. They are let down and directed to the IPA article which seldom interests them. I am of the opinion that you make an arrangement whereby users can listen to the word if the click on its pronunciation.

eg: pronounced /ˈvɪzjər/[2] If they click on vɪzjər, the computer should pronounce it. yours sincerely Sagar (India) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 117.195.39.165 (talk) 18:15, 15 September 2010 (UTC)

Autosuggest problem on Ipad

On iPad, when using the latest version of Safari, the autosuggest box appears out of alignment with the search input box at the top right of the screen on wikipedia's new home page, english version. More specifically, when the iPad is displayed with it's height as the shorter length, the autosuggest box is barely even visible, due to it being pushed so far to the right. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.194.78.121 (talk) 02:37, 16 September 2010 (UTC)

Can we have this nes style switched off for our language version???

At Kiswahili wikipedia we are only a small group of editors. This change was not requested by any of us. But it givs us a headache as all our instruction material is invalid. We do not have enough people now to rework it. This is a really headache! I appreciate that you guys are so proud on what you have done but I donot think it is the right way to force it on people. Why not have the option to go to the new style instead the other way round? Besides: Why can i retain my old view on German but not on Swahili? Pronunciation

I love Wikipedia and was vindicated for quoting it when Britannica was proven to be less accurate than Wikipedia. However it would be great if Wikipedia would start with a subject then it's pronunciation prior to going into the subject. If possible designing the submission page, to enforce that practice, would be great. Ever look up the pronunciation of "Stethem" as in Robert Stethem or USS Stethem DDG 63? Googling it was like trying to get a straight answer from a politician. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 198.151.12.15 (talk) 16:36, 21 September 2010 (UTC)

I see dragons! Which pronunciation are you proposing? Received Pronunciation (Southern English) or local pronunciation? Take Maidstone- there are four accepted ways of saying it used within 4 miles (though everyone asked would say that three of them don't exist)- the town lies on a dialect boundary. It is 30 miles from London where there are two further pronunciations used! (For the curious: Emphasis may be on the first or second syllable, the first vowel can be a 'a' as in 'fate' or closer to an open 'I' sound like 'like'. The second syllable can be 'Stn' or 'Stone'. Needless to say the pronunciation has changed in the 30 years I have been in the area. Yes, it would be useful but you do need to attribute the source.

an old-timer comments on ease of use, challenges and priorities

I among some of the earlier Wikipedians. My interests are primarily working on content. Part of the WP success formula has been ease of access and encouragement and support for contributors, especially those "dipping their toes" into our pool. Some of us are older folks who basically have had to learn from scratch how to use computers, which were non-existent during our schooling. Some of us have older equipment and not the faster connections as well. I think we need to work on being as easy as possible for some of us who don't want to spend a whole lot of time learning how to use the system. These considerations must be balanced to the needs of younger and/or more computer-savvy potential Wikipedians, and also be flexible for their hardware and connections as well as folks like me.

You have significant challenges, but such have often stimulated great creativity and results from the WP community. I feel a sense of comfort inasmuch as I believe these challenges will continue to translate to inspiration, innovation, and energetic creativity as they have in the past. I am out of my field of best strengths, but I am grateful and thank you for the good work on these priorities. Vaoverland (talk) 04:48, 22 September 2010 (UTC)

language transferability

Hello,

I often work in multiple languages (English, French, etc) and find it impossible to switch between languages while searching for content. It is time consuming to go back to google or the home page to search in a different language. I notice that many of the articles are available in multiple languages.

It would be beneficial to users to have a link on article pages to switch between the major languages, and even to have a search option to search for an article in other languages. An example of this is the Canadian government website in which all available pages have a button to switch directly between the equivalent French and English pages. It is incredibly convenient - if I don't know the French title for an article I can bring it up in English, hit the French button, and voila.

I believe that many people would benefit from this increased accessibility in Wikipedia also.

Thank you for this consideration. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.92.51.88 (talk) 15:35, 24 September 2010 (UTC)

Ageing eyesight makes differentiating text difficult

Poor Eyesight

It used to be that I could see most things quite easily but, at age 60, I now wear reading glasses but I’m hoping for some sympathy from good-sighted users who presently have no difficulty reading and therefore little understanding about my eyesight issue.

Hidden Hyper-links

My main point is the use of colour and borders. I might be accused of criticising style but the plain shape of menu listing together with black-on-white printed pages gives a crisp clarity but I have difficulty spotting hyper-links which are coloured navy blue when fresh and change to blue-black once used. I don’t know if this is browser related (IE8) or is caused by some other setting. Hyper-links are the most important tool; finding them should be the simplest task. I wish to council for a change to their colouring, giving them more contrast with the background or perhaps returning them to the earlier experience of changing from bright blue to red once the path is taken?

Why sans serif?

I believe the sans serif font used for Wiki articles tires my eyes when I read the longer items. I think serif typeface helps speed letter recognition although I’ve never made a proper study.

Justified Text

However, I am grateful the narrative is arranged only left-justified (and not right-justified, like many websites). This aids my scanning back to find the beginning of the next line in a paragraph. Search box I might also add that the search box falls under this category of ‘difficult to find’. Could I be more forthright than others have been about the positioning of this particular tool? As all enquiries begin with a search, I’m fairly certain I’m not alone in reading from top to bottom and left to right. Please put the search box back in its primary position at the top left, at least for European-origin language users. Otherwise, please declare its position with a brightly coloured and contrasting box / border. Style over substance we do not want.

Conclusion

1) Change hyper-link font colours to help us recognise them easily. 2) Please keep left-justified only, paragraph layout as standard. 3) Please consider giving readers a choice of typeface. 4) Please give the search box a coloured border.

I was doing some research attempting to get statistical averages of young girls vacationing in Canada and around the US border for being abducted into human trafficking, as far as incidents. I was thinking of taking my daughter and my husband on vacation up there to meet her online "friend" he is male but we don't know him from Adam....if you catch my drift.

Any sites to check him out that you are aware of?

Foreground Color for Search Box

The search box currently specifies a background color, but no foreground color. As a result anyone using a dark system theme gets light text on a white background. In my case the text is white and is invisible. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.108.176.54 (talk) 05:00, 29 September 2010 (UTC)

Remove the suffix ", the free encyclopaedia" from all Wikipedia's page titles

Every page on Wikipedia has a title such as "Pomodoro Technique - Wikipedia, the free encyclopaedia". Does _anyone_ now not know wikipedia is "the free encyclopaedia"? It seems amazingly redundant for this information to be sprayed to the world.

Practically, the title will often be used by web clients as a book mark's title, or as a file's title when taking a page clip or when dragging an article, etc. Adding in spurious information in this context is detrimental to users' experiences because it masks out the important facts; will split the title prematurely on limited space devices; and means they're probably going to want to edit that and delete that text from the created artefact.

My own redundant information – Wikipedia is amazingly wonderful. Thanks very much everyone! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.107.3.210 (talk) 14:46, 30 September 2010 (UTC)

Could you make a dark version of Wikipedia. The white background after of hours of reading can be ver painful especially for us who use it to do work in the midst of the night.

What's gone wrong with the Mac Dictionary Wikipedia feature? The scroll bar is blank and I can not use it to scroll down in a Wikipedia article any more. It has been not working for many months now. I had hoped it would eventually get fixed, but no it hasn't.

I realize there is a workaround buy clicking on a word in the bottom row and dragging down, but this is awkward, highlights everything, and it pretty darn annoying. Are there any plans to fix this? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Benbrilling (talkcontribs) 17:03, 5 October 2010 (UTC)

hi, I am from argentina and I just registered in wikipedia. set my "internacionalización" item in the profile preferences to spanish and suddenly got changes like this : "

   * Actualidad
   * Página aleatoria
   * Donar

Interaction

   * Acerca de Wikipedia
   * Portal de la comunidad
   * Cambios recientes
   * Para contactar
   * Ayuda                               "

and many other notes or sections in the pages that mixes spanish with (i assume) the language of the wikipedia article you've chosen (in this case english). I don't know how this has been managed but I think at least there should be one single language in those cases. either your "internationalization" language or the article's language. I know i would be lost in an article wich language i don't know, but there it is, i don't know it!. If I read it intuitively well, I should be able to choose the page "options" intuitively I guess...

Wikipedia dictionary

Hello

Me and many before me have possibly noticed that Wikipedia can be used as a dictionary, often better than commercial ones. I search an article in english and then see if it has an article in the language i want, and the heading often is a perfect translation of the word i want.

You could exploit this connection to make a wikiDictionary with all the articles that is in different languages about the same topic.

Just a thought.

Sincerely,

The word 'Search' is the default search term

I must delete it to type in what I want to search for. When I click on the Search box to give it focus, the greyed-out word 'Search' un-greys and becomes regular text. I have to delete it to put in my search terms. If I don't then my text gets inserted into the middle of the word 'Search' where my mouse pointer happened to click on it. Usually it goes to the end, so if I don't correct it, my search would have the word 'Search' prepended to it.

This is one reason why i don't feel very encouraged to try anything here after that. i do a doctoral thesis of research to my credit on american literature. i also know that my existing articles entitled kapil muni tiwary and Delhi Public School Bathinda need to be improved. i do get bogged by many of your jargons and processes. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Arunbandana (talkcontribs) 07:41, 15 October 2010 (UTC)

AUTOMATIC MLA/APA Formatted Source Citing

Why hasn't this been used yet? I'd love to be able to have quick, painless, preformatted citations from this website!

To better explain what i'm talking about, please see this website:

Once you obtain your information, if you'd like to use it in a research paper, you can simply choose "Cite" and it will automatically format the source by MLA or APA standards! This is a brilliant feature and I personally have referred to Wikipedia throughout my entire educational career.

With the ability to create a user account could a program be used to help make the random article more user specific with things they might be interested in. Something similar to the Stumbleupon programming would be cool. The Create Book feature is perfect for gathering information and especially references on any particular topic. It enable me to have one place for referring to this data.

Thank you for having this available on Wikipedia, I'm sure I will use it often.

There used to be a separating line feature in the toolbox which seems to have been eliminated. It's useful for separating items within a section - particularly when they're unrelated, like the following edit. Opbeith (talk) 07:48, 24 October 2010 (UTC)

When you spell a word phonetically, why don't you use the English alphabet? You use characters I don't recognize, and I suspect most of your other readers don't recognize them either. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.42.70.192 (talk) 00:48, 22 October 2010 (UTC)

The International Phonetic Alphabet is a widely used convention for transcribing sounds, employed by the most reputable dictionaries. Even within the English-speaking community the written English alphabet is voiced in different ways. A convention helps avoid conflict and confusion between different individual interpretations. I presume that's why Wikipedia uses IPA. Opbeith (talk) 07:48, 24 October 2010 (UTC)

Contacting You Is Obscenely Hard and Other Issues

First of all, all I wanted to do was fix a simple spelling error. After following all the links on the 'contact us' path to find out how, it tells me just to edit the page myself. Only one problem, there is no link to do so on the page I want to edit. It took me fifteen more minutes to find this, and I'm still not sure this is the best way to contact you. The problem I was originally trying to report was with the page concerning Hanoi, the capitol of Vietnam. The problem is that the page spells 'capitol' incorrectly. 'Capital,' like what is on the page, refers to a resource, usually monetary. 'Capitol' refers to a city. Not a bit problem, except that if you search for 'Vietnam capitol,' you will not find this page because of the spelling error. I hope you can fix it. And please God, don't make people spend fifteen minutes trying to report stuff like this, most won't find it worth it! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.1.50.37 (talk) 17:38, 23 October 2010 (UTC)

The same editing principles apply on this page as any other. Check the indications at the top of the page or above each section. Certainly it's not as clear as it might be, but it's not impossibly hard. And it would probably make sense to check the spelling of "capital city" in a third-party dictionary before changing other people's correct spelling. Opbeith (talk) 07:55, 24 October 2010 (UTC)

Printing links in color

When printing an article, links which show in blue on the screen print in black. It would be nice to have links pring in color as they do in a regular web page. I don't know if this is possible given the underlying technology used in these pages but it is a suggestion. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Alexepascual (talkcontribs) 15:32, 24 October 2010 (UTC)

The Long Journey

The end of the world was coming near. Did our savior die, did our savior not die? Our world was coming to an end. Our ancestors couldn’t predict what was coming, that the future had left then alone into the darkness. Evil ...had come who is Ox’s son, Hater. The name Hater means that he will kill everyone with hate, even the wolves. The humans will die by Hater. Every living child will perish by him. The only hope is Nore and his warriors, but do you think they’re alive or dead? Please. Is the one child who is born even with greater power, the one who is Nore’s son? The time has come for Nore’s son to be born by his mother, Kea, and the name of the child is Elezaar. Elezaar has a great power that not even Nore has, but the only way h will be troubled is by Hater. Hater has over ten thousand vampires who are stronger than the vampires of his father, Ox. But that’s not the end because Hater is only eight years old, and Elezaar is only six years old, and this is where all begins. We never knew who won the war. Was it the wolves or vampires? Because Kea and Blue escaped when the wolves came in the middle of the battle of the vampires. Ox is furious about the two people who escaped and the rest were still fighting vampires. Kea escaped with Blue because she knew she had a baby inside of her tummy because she started to vomit in the middle of the vampires’ war. Something came to the rescue, to defend: the wolves. Elan and Feral came with their whole army of wolves to fight the vampires. Ray, Ron, Lem died in the war, except for End who was still fighting the vampires and refused to escape. Kea and Blue left for where the wolves came from the woods, attacking the entire vampire army. They both ran with injuries on their whole body, but nothing could stop them, The Long Journey 87 not even Ox. Running, tired, panting, even hungry. The morning came, and the sky was covered in red color. Both warriors escaped, but where? Because we don’t know if their leader is alive. Was it the end? Will the human race be destroyed. Kea though about her boyfriend, Nore. How she will tell the child, if Nore dies. The reaction of who will save the humans. The ancestors predicted that Nore will save the humans, only to wait to see if Nore is truly the savior of the humans, or was it just a falsehood the ancestors foretold? Here is where it all begins. Kea and Blue stopped at a round, clean grassy area at the forest, where children were playing, like maybe ten kids chasing each other. But before I say more details, I knew something was wrong; there was something that they couldn’t see. A few trees covered the thing that was moving the leaves, and suddenly, a head of a kid went off, splashing blood over the next kids who were playing. The bloodiest thing the two warriors had ever seen. Whoosh of blood everywhere, splashing on the ground. The kids hovered, scared, frightened at the sight of the dead kid. And then it came: the beast that killed the kid. Eight blood suckers of vampires. “Vampires!” both warriors screamed in terror. “Take the kids, and go!” Blue screamed, jumping at the eight vampires with no fear. These vampires were different ones because they were not covered in blood or scratches. They looked completely clean but dressed all in black. Kea ran toward the kids and pushed them to run where they came from. “Run, kids!” she shouted at them. And ran they did, leaving one warrior to fight against eight beast vampires. But something went wrong because tree vampires ran in a different direction, and all of the sudden, they appeared in front of Kea and the kids, snarling in a furious way, like a wolf snarling in anger, with their long sharp swords. “What do you want?” Kea hollered, raising her sword. The three bald vampires dressed in black were laughing, enjoying the anger of Kea. “Oh, to kill you!” One vampire spoke, laughing. The kids stayed behind Kea, staring in terror, too afraid to run, too afraid to shout for help. Kea felt a kick in her stomach. Then she touched her small belly, feeling the baby inside of her. “Oh, baby!” the same vampire spoke in a gentle voice. “Well then, we are about to enjoy a fabulous juicy, so sweet meal.” Kea was about to fight when five humans came racing to grab the kids and two humans who looked the same size: strong, with short hair, they raced toward the vampires, fighting them so the rest could escape. “Come,” one human said, touching the shoulder of Kea’s back. Kea left, following the humans and the kids to a clean field, running downhill to a field of burned houses and dead people all in one pile. Some parts of the cleaned field were covered in blood, and some were burned. They ran, crossing the scary field to a large tunnel. Dark inside, walking very gently, and then they came to a stop, turning around a thing where a door opened. Lights came; a large square thing covered in human stuff like posters, furniture, pictures on the wall, TV, where to cook, even rooms to stay to sleep. “Close the door, Justin,” the guy who told Kea to come ordered a tall guy with long hair dressed in the uniform of a human soldier. Justin closed the door behind him. Kea stared at all the figures, too afraid to speak from seeing such a human house in a tunnel. Kea jumped, twisting herself around to face the door behind her, when she heard the door knocked twice. “Who is it?” Justin said, his voice loud at who was knocking. “Us, Justin. Now open the door,” a strong voice responded. Justin opened the door, and five humans came in, and behind them came Blue. The humans looked tall, with big shoulders, big arms, and two things: they looked the same, with their hair and clothes of uniforms of soldiers. Blue ran to stand beside Kea. He looked exhausted, all covered in scratches but no broken bones. Some humans went to the so-called refrigerator. Grabbing sodas and popping them, tossing the lid up high, they sat down, turning the TV on. “Can’t you see we have visitors?” the same guy said in a deep voice, facing his friends. When he said that, all of them stood up, facing the warriors. “Welcome to our last hope,” they all said in high voices. When they said that, the two warriors gasped at the humans when they said last hope. Something they didn’t expect or something they never heard such thing, something weird that they got frightened. “Last hope. What does it means?” Kea asked, frightened. All seven humans looked at each other to agree on something, and then they nodded. “Last hope means the loss of the humans who will be forgotten forever,” said the person who we think is the commander of the humans because he’s the one so far that talked. Giving orders to Kea to come with them and closing the door and giving orders to show respect that they have visitors. “What!” Blue screamed, terrified. “First of all, my name is Jeremiah, leader of the humans. And these are the last soldiers I have. The rest are dead. Many people died because of the big war of the vampires,” Jeremiah said in a sad tone. “My people have fought for the search of their savior so-called Nore.” The both warriors gasped, remembering their leader, Nore. The last day, they saw him leaving into the city of vampires and not returning back. Only one person came back, which was End. The person who came back and stayed to fight the vampires with the wolves. “Nore is my boyfriend,” Kea said, touching her belly. The humans got terrified, then they walked slowly to stand beside their leader, Jeremiah facing in a surprised way. “WHAT!” Justin said in a high voice. “It’s true. I even have his baby,” Kea said with sorrow. The humans whispered to each other, and finally, Jeremiah stood up and spoke in a rough voice. “You’re the woman the ancestors have told me in my dream two days ago.” “What did they say?” Both warriors spoke. “We bow down to you,” the leader of the humans said, bowing down with his humans too. They didn’t stand up until Kea spoke. “Don’t bow down to us because we are not the savior of the humans. Please stand up. You’re making us nervous.” They all stood up, facing them with their heads high. “I had the dream two days ago.” Jeremiah faced her, talking in a super perfect voice. “A man named Frank said that Nore has been found and our search is over. But there’s something else that he said.” “What?” the both warriors said. “They told us about the child, the one you’re touching,” Jeremiah said. “The child will be born with great power that not even the humans could defeat Nore, as I think the vampires can, because Ox will have a child too. But that baby will be more dangerous than his own father, even more dangerous for us.” The two warriors gasped in a terrified high-pitched tone, then Kea hugged her small belly and her baby, trying to comfort the baby. “You even know what it’s going to be, the baby?” Kea asked. “Of course, even the name it will have,” Jeremiah said, smiling “The child is a boy named Elezaar, who will have great power beyond his own father. The child will fight to the death with Ox’s son, and one will win. We don’t know what will happen to us.” “Will the humans have to be saved, or what will happen next? And why did all of you say, ‘Welcome to our last hope’?” Blue said. “We don’t really know. What we meant was that this, where you’re standing, is our only escape or the house that the vampires don’t know,” Jeremiah said. “We have come in search for our savior and his son.” “What do you mean?” Kea asked. “The ancestors have spoken, and the future has been changed. Nore will have his son right by his side, but one will die, and one will continue the task.” The warriors stared half-smiling, because Nore was still alive, or so they think. “We’re leaving now,” a tall soldier said, grabbing the hands of two young children. “No! You’re not leaving on my orders,” Jeremiah shouted. “We have to because our human race is vanishing, and we need more soldiers to crush the vampires.” “So be it!” The tall soldier left with the two young children without even saying good-bye or packing his stuff. The two warriors looked at each other and agreed. “We’re leaving too,” they both said. “It is so, because we no longer have to search for the savior. We found it and even his son, the powerful person on this leaving earth. You may go as you please, and thank you for the children,” Jeremiah said. “Which I mean for one person, and that person is Blue. Blue, you’re the one that needs to stay.” The warriors gasped; did this mean the end is near for the warriors to be separated? “No! I’m leaving with Kea. And how do you know my name?” “Oh, the ancestors foretold that one has to stay, or both will die.” “What does that mean?” they both asked. “The time has come for us to end the vampires and the one who is the beast, the so-called Hater. Each one will have their own warriors, except for the leader and his wife.” The Long Journey 91 “So you’re saying all ten of us will have to be separated,” Blue asked. “Of course so that we can defeat Hater and his followers. If not, then the humans will perish into the forgotten place, and the ruler will be Hater,” Jeremiah said. “I have come, searched. Many of my men died, and now it’s my time to follow the one so-called Elezaar to teach what holds his power.” “What! So you will go with Kea?” Blue asked. “Of course. It is my duty that the ancestors told me. Now,” Jeremiah said turning around to face a soldier that looked kind of young, “my friends, I want to thank you for everything you have done. And may the ancestors give you riches on this earth. I give you your new leader, Jackson. From now on, you will continue to fight the vampires and protect the humans. You’re in charge now. Good-bye, my good friends. Now Kea and I will continue this journey and find the two missing warriors.” This is where it all ends. This where it means the meaning of End, which is that if Nore dies, then End dies. The time has come for all the world to fear the pain in which the vampires will do to them. Do we think our savior is dead? Or do we think our savior is alive? What can we do, is the question we ask. Our children will grow, or will they die like us? Elezaar will be born sooner or later, but there’s the son of Ox, Hater, And both will fight each other, even to the death. Jeremiah is the chosen one too, the one who the ancestors truly gave powerful magic to teach Elezaar how to use his powers. He too is given power, which all of us don’t know. But sooner or later, we will know: is Nore died or alive? To Be Continued . . . —Preceding unsigned comment added by Garcia Francisco (talkcontribs) 23:24, 25 October 2010 (UTC)

Francisco Garcia (Writer)

October 5th, 1992. A boy was born with great ideas, the boy was name Francisco Garcia. The times past, years past, Francisco lives with all his family which are mom, dad, sister and brothers but Francisco wont tell the names of his families. Francisco is turn seventeen years old last year in tenth grade where Francisco read many books and never in my life have seen him signing or entering into a sport, he always was quit reading books, enjoying his life. At home he always goes to his laptop or his home computer, types horror, creatures, demons but only half an hour. He get’s up, walks and snuggles making his nephew laugh when his mom calls to stop. The life of Francisco was always shy, so he or all of the sudden in the half of year in tenth he comes up to me. “Hey want to see what I have done?” “Sure.” Francisco sneaks his hands on the backpack pulling a stack of papers, or so I thought. He shows it, and by seeing it or he handing me I saw a long bold title. The Long Journey by Francisco Garcia. I knew that’s this was a book, a manuscript book, flipping one two pages which I knew what was it but I just asked him to be sure. “What’s this?” “I did it, I did a book.” “What!” “Yes, I’m just showing it to you for you’re---” “No! no thought, why don’t you publish it. Become a writer, do it, make you’re family happy.” I said smiling to him handing the manuscript back.

After working hard, sweating like dripping blood, Francisco saved money, by summer came. He published his first book. The Long Journey, book 1.

So until today Francisco is turning eighteen years in eleven days. His now an author of two new books call, The Long Journey, book and a new serious call Brobdignagin book 1. And now to say who am I, I’m the writer. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Garcia Francisco (talkcontribs) 23:26, 25 October 2010 (UTC)

Not seeing references while previewing a section change

This been bugging me for years. I edit a *section* (not the entire article) and add a new reference. When I hit Show Preview, I see my changes and a little [1] where my reference is linked, but I do not see the reference list. I want to see how it looks (ie. <ref>[http:\\SomeURL.com This is the reference text]</ref>) and if it works, but I can't because there's no reflist. Perhaps a {{reflist}} should temporarily be added to a preview automatically? -- Lyverbe (talk) 15:25, 22 October 2010 (UTC)

This is a known issue. There should be some user scripts which fix this on WP:Skin. Maybe ask there on the talk page for your problem. --93.213.171.199 (talk) 17:26, 27 October 2010 (UTC)

First Time User of Wikipedia

I am a technical user in computer networks, I noticed a lot of the IPv6 stuff is out of date and wrong, when I went to clean it up someone kept undoing all my changes, and when I copied and pasted the IETF (2 sentences on the rule for solicited-node address) user kbrose undid it and said I could not copy even though the IETF wants you to copy! http://www.rfc-editor.org/copyright.23Jan01.html I am finding myself not wanting to update Wikipedia for ipv6 because it is wasting my time because someone unqualified who is not referencing anything can over-ride anything I do... I guess you're talking about your edits on IPv6 address. Copyright is not totally free if you read the hole page from rfc-editor.org (“provided that the above copyright notice and this paragraph are included”). Small portions with reference are no problem, but it's not totally obvious. Be bold. --93.213.171.199 (talk) 17:22, 27 October 2010 (UTC)

Printing version

I think it would be awesome if wikipedia has a printing version where the users are able to click on the website and print the content. Also, before printing, wiki may offer an option what content the user are willing to print; for example, the users may be able to omit the reference, external link, or picture of the content.

Tabs in "new interface"

The links provided in "tabs" in the new interface stuff don't seem to behave consistently among themselves, or consistently with what happened before. I should start by saying that I have to use IE7 as my browser. I used to find it useful to be able to right-click on an "Article" tab, or "History" tab and be able to select an "open in new tab" or "open in new window" option. While this sometimes still works now, these options sometimes don't appear, possibly depending on what type of page is open, or on which tab one wants. Obviously, this is particularly useful when on an edit page, when one doesn't want to lose the edits already done. Melcombe (talk) 10:15, 27 October 2010 (UTC)

Poor taste

i think it is in poor taste to list deceased animals that have attained a degree of celebrity in the same alphabetical listing as human beings. granted, some people who are on that list are there due to notoriety and not celebrity. imagine a close relative or friend passing the same day as "paul the octopus". how would you feel? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.9.127.166 (talk) 13:15, 27 October 2010 (UTC)

I was listening to the song Rappers Delight and wondered if wikipedia had information on the women who says: "say what" then I thought. If everyone who is listed as an editor of a page can her the questions people have regarding the improvement of a page, perhaps the quality can improve even more. every page represents it's own social sphere, yet this aspect is lacking - not that you guys haven't already thought that. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Vahekatros (talkcontribs) 22:36, 27 October 2010 (UTC)

Request for a member of the team to add an obituary and some information

Hello there,

What ever I do you seem to delete my entries. I have a mention of a Roger Tyrrell on your website in relation to a left wing newspaper "Black Dwarf" . He seems to have been given less credit or information than the others such as Allen Hallerday. Roger Tyrrell is one of the smartest least ignorant or prejudicial people I have met in my life. He died in his early sixties on Wednesday 20th October 2010, he lived alone and was not found until 3 days after his death. That gentlemen was an x member of the labour party [3], a historian, linguist and writer, and leading anti Nazi/National Front activist. I would like some one there to add his obituary and mention these things. As it is Roger was far more key to "Black Dwarf" than people realise. He funded that paper by working as a tour guide and providing walking tours in London to American tourists. [4] .

Please do something for him. Everytime I try to edit a page it gets deleted I get complaints from your team.

Move all pronunciations into a separate line above the first paragraph...

May I suggest to move all pronunciations into a separate line above the first paragraph of articles [similar to Google dictionary]? Currently, pronunciations are inserted into the first paragraph of articles and this adds a lot of unnecessary clutter in the paragraph. This is especially bad for some articles that have a lot of prununciation info [example: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic_of_Ireland ]. The inserted pronunciations also are an accessibility problem for people with visual impairments or other handicap and require the assistance of text-to-speech programs to read paragraphs for them. The text-to-speech programs can't read the special font characters used in the pronunciations and causes issues or delays in the processing. One of my family members have experienced this problem and it likely happens to other such users. Can this improvement be made? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.171.177.46 (talk) 23:58, 31 October 2010 (UTC)

"Kairos" @ Ateneo de Manila, Q.C., Philippines

I would like to add that there is a Jesuit school in the Philippines, the Ateneo de Manila University in Katipunan, Quezon City. My nephew is right now attending a retreat there as a high school student. As an Ignatian university, should I say their retreat program could also be called "Kairos" ? If so, it would be an honor if you include this school as one that offers this kind of course to their student. Thank you and God bless. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.12.91.141 (talk) 17:11, 3 November 2010 (UTC)

armenians

I realize, after trying to read all of your disclaimers (let's face it, that's what they are} I would like to know why (yes, I know there are NO questions allowed, however this is what I would like to know on a supposed "question" site) the armenians have been allowed to totally rework their history, without any input that use to be on this site. You have been asking for contributions for this website, since, supposedly you are non profit, yet knowing this particular group of people firsthand I now suspect that you do give preference to those who contribute more money. I am VERY disappointed and now no longer trust your website for information as it is not unbiased or particurly accurate. Dangerous, actually. You have digressed. It's too bad. I can no longer find two sides of any story, only the one that pays more. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.110.212.167 (talk) 05:53, 6 November 2010 (UTC)

Talk vs. Discussion

Some newbies seem to be getting confused with the two terms for the same page. The tab says 'Discussion' but the url says 'Talk'. Editors commonly say 'see Talk page' in the edit summaries, and it seems some newbies don't make the connection (which leads to edit wars, hurt feelings, etc.) Perhaps using 'Discuss/Talk' in the tab is a possibly alternative if there are reasons not to simply use 'Talk'. Flatterworld (talk) 17:17, 6 November 2010 (UTC)

I find the really long lines of these articles difficult to read. Please add the ability to read the stories in 2 or 3 columns, like a newspaper. Very long lines of text are hard on aging eyes. Narrowing the browser window is an option but a poor one, because the pictures and everything else gets crowded. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 138.92.15.245 (talk) 19:34, 6 November 2010 (UTC)

WYSIWYG editor and font styles

I strongly recommend Wikipedia to implement a WYSIWYG editor for articles so that this would encourage more users to contribute to Wikipedia, as one doesn't need to read through pages of help files first to understand how it works. While I'm quite comfortable with the current editor, plain coding could look daunting for some. A WYSIWYG editor with basic features such as inserting tables, thumbnails and captions, RHS info columns, font size, B/I/U, adding references (especially this feature as many articles have "citation needed" tags) etc. would suffice basic editing or corrections to articles, and a more advanced editor e.g. such as the one currently available can be made available for those who require or prefer it.

Another suggestion on the cosmetics of the site, instead of keeping the font face throughout Wikipedia in Arial, I suggest that CSS font styles can be introduced (like many sites out there) before HTML5 is ubiquitous, so that more humanist sans-serif typefaces are used and increases readability especially with long articles. For example, on a Mac, Lucida Grande can be used, while on Windows Calibri (or whichever is more suitable) can be used. Arial can remain as a fall-back if these fonts are not available on the system.

Adenosine Triphosphate (talk) 14:00, 7 November 2010 (UTC)

I strongly recommend that any WYSIWYG editor include a reveal mode that allows you to view and revise markup explicitly. Programs like ms word have a nasty tendency to insert unwanted markup when copying text. Be extremely cautious about what you do automatically. Shmuel (Seymour J.) Ways to improve the quality of pages.

Wikipedia should solicit papers written by college students and use them to enhance or add citations to pages that show "This article does not cite any references or sources." at the top of the page. Find a way to incentivize students to submit papers. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.65.65.107 (talk) 23:38, 9 November 2010 (UTC)

Star instead of Watch Page is not intuitive

It only saves a few characters worth of space, is not intuitive to some people (incl. me) and makes people have to dig unnecessarily to figure out how to watch a page. I think it should switch from the star back to what it was before or something so that if you put watch into your browser's text search feature, it can find it.

I also wonder how the star works for visually impaired people using a reader to navigate...

Clicking in the Search Box

In the past, before all the changes, when I initially brought up the wikipedia site, the cursor in the search box would be blinking and I could just start typing. Now, I have to actually click in the box to type my search request. As a medical transcriptionist I use wikipedia dozens of times every day and would like to have the automatic typing feature back. It gets tiresome having to click in the search box every time I open wikipedia. Thank you for your consideration of this suggestion. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Lanotary (talkcontribs) 20:57, 11 November 2010 (UTC)

Wikipedia new features vs Mac Spotlight

Using Mac Spotlight, it is not possible to scroll down in the Wikipedia entry that comes up. This was previously fixed by turning off the new features but this no longer works. Please fix it so that I can search Wikipedia using Spotlight. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Nealbetts (talkcontribs) 22:52, 11 November 2010 (UTC)

Could you please correct the spelling in the sentence I added?

Multi-Language Search

I do a lot of research for my job and would like to be able to look things up in all the languages I know (more or less so). Wouldn't it be cool to have some advanced search posibility to do this? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.26.130.189 (talk) 12:40, 12 November 2010 (UTC)

New Wikipedia user. Cannot post a new article after many tries. Interface is horrid. Maybe I'll sign in again on Halloween to better appreciate scary interface!

I do press relations for a large company. I asked for something to be deleted that was highly confidential earlier this week. The article was deleted but the headline stayed, which is not right at all and may have some serious legal exposures attached to it. (We alert you that something is a confidentiality breech and you keep the words up?) Now it's not confidential anymore and we want an article to be posted but the user interface is so terrible and hard to deal with, I can't get it posted.

Not only that, but the old "this has been deleted" pink highlighted message with the right headline is still there. Someone with an offensive user name "It's me ladies, Calvary" supposedly holds control over this article that's been deleted with remaining headline. No matter how open this system is, it's offensive and wrong for this person to have control over this page and this brand name.

I have tried over and over to post something to replace what was partially deleted, after many many tries, and answering 20 ridiculous questions, actually got to the "put your story here" box, only to be asked to sign in yet again, thus erasing the link to the page to post. I'm out of time on this. All I know is Wikipedia's user interface is not friendly and this article title should not have stayed up after our warning. It needs to be taken down and removed from the offensive user so someone can give people the right information in a timely manner. I don't have to control the words in it but someone with a name like "Hey ladies, come and get me" is not the appropriate owner.

So issues are: -someone needs to delete that old headline -someone needs to delete the "offensive person" from the post and topic altogether -someone needs to fix the user interface so a new user can post something more easily

I love you

You are the greatest. I use Wikipedia all the time, just like everyone else. Man, it sure would be bad if someone corrupt/evil got a hold of this wonderful tool and used it for evil. I hope that never happens.

Stay just the way you are,

Regarding MALAYALAM Version

There are five letters in Malayalam namely "CHILLUKALL". They are "N", "L", "R" respectively pronounced as the second half of their English pronounciation and also "NN" as RN in TURN and "LL" as "L" in CRAWL. This letters are not shown properly in ur Malayalam Version. They are shown just as unknown letter. The font may not be compatible with this letters. Changing the font may make it correct.

"personal appeal" from J. Wales

I live in Amsterdam. I was reading en.wikipedia.org. I clicked on the "personal appeal" from J. Wales. I got a page in dutch. This is obviously not correct. Even supposing I could read dutch, not everyone who lives in this country speaks dutch. This is a major fail. You also make it extremely difficult to find a place to leave feedback. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.161.35.206 (talk) 05:36, 13 November 2010 (UTC)

—Preceding unsigned comment added by Inkelabzindabad (talkcontribs) 15:37, 13 November 2010 (UTC)

Message from Mike Posner

I use Wikipedia almost every day.

I read your message for the donations from users. I highly agree that you should be earning a revenue from this website. It's highly useful (even if the info isn't always correct!)

Advertise on it. Accept advertisers and do it in a non intrusive way. It won't bother me or most users if it's done in a way that doesn't interfere with our experience. You guys deserve to make money off of this site and donations aren't gonna cut it. I think we all appreciate the attempt to keep it free from advertising but no successful business can maintain that.

Your ideas and work deserves to be paid and rewarded.

"no successful business can maintain that"

Good thing this isn't a business. Wikipedia just needs to pay it's bills, we don't need to make a profit. Donated money is not used to pay people for editing Wikipedia, editors are all volunteers. Beeblebrox (talk) 19:12, 15 November 2010 (UTC)

Jimmy Wales Mug all over Wikipedia - Egomaniac?

Why does Jimmy Wales have to plaster his mug all over Wikipedia? Does he think he is so good-looking, people will fork over $ for his panhandling if he puts his face all over the website? I am sick of looking at him. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.177.23.15 (talk) 02:59, 17 November 2010 (UTC)

Really like the look and style

I'm so amazed at the level of information here and I'm glad that it seems knowledgeably written by the contributors. THE LOOK and LAYOUT OF INFO is really so well done. I REFER SPECIFICALLY to the details presented on the page "DANCE ON SUNSET". This layout of info and dates and program details about this particular TV SHOW was so nicely done with great info provided and with layout so clean and easy to read that I'm just delighted to use it. I was looking at the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards, also nicely laid out and jammed with amazing detailed info, and decided to click the name of the "DANCE ON SUNSET" link as I used to enjoy that show too. So that's the reason for the enjoyment of being able to QUICKLY read through the FACTS AND DATES. LOVE IT. Readers of this can check it out if need. I don't have chance to use Wiki very often at this time, so maybe the pages have looked this great for some time. Either way, keep up the good work. I hope all articles are easy to read like that. The font is great, the title area is perfect, the TABLE ITEMS are superb.

Also I don't mind the FOUNDER having a banner note to provide user info posted at page top for

all users to see. That provides some unity to the efforts of all the good contributors as they are adding info to the articles. Having some common sense rules put forth is always good to keep it so nice and classy as it is, and I hope it stays that way. ALSO ENJOY THE WIKI HOME PAGE. Nice to have that for some unity as a solid entity as well. Tried to make credit card donation, foiled.

Tried to make a donation just now -- after filling out information, was informed you needed my address and postal code -- why? -- though, curiously, not my country (not USA). Filled it out. Then presented with the little box with the mucked-up characters, filled it out, then forcibly returned to screen to fill in credit card information -- again. No. I gave up. Now have spent another five minutes going through a labarynth to try to leave you folks a message. Makes automated phone answering systems seem utterly user-frienly by comparison. Is this as straightforward as you can make it? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.224.73.38 (talk) 23:52, 17 November 2010 (UTC)

how long?

I know this has been asked before, but it never seems to get answered. How long are the "new features" and "take me back" links going to stay at the top of the page? Any experienced user has made their choice by now, and a new user doesn't know the difference anyway. Seems kind of silly to keep them up this long, is there a date set for removal? Beeblebrox (talk) 19:15, 15 November 2010 (UTC)

Hi Jimmy wales put some adds instead of your sweet face to earn money.

Hi Jimmy wales , no doubt you’re one of the great achiever, built one on of the most searched website who helped millions and equally damaged millions with unverified , misleading content. Running nonprofit organization with donations is great as long as it is meaningful and people willing to donate without any appeal. I see big banner of “Personal appeal” for 2 to 3 months every year, if you use same banner for advertisement I’m sure Wikipedia can earn enough money to run its shop. Somebody should not beg when they have power to earn. I agree displaying adds is ugly, But for me it does not make any difference from displaying big Personal appeal banner. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 115.184.58.125 (talk) 09:05, 20 November 2010 (UTC)

Sable232

Sable232 is out of control read the post about his talks with other users. Sable232 is blocking users because they do not meet his view points. He has also removed information which is true an accurate such as Chevy Cruz is the replacement for the Saturn ION. One can go to GM and find the replacement match for their Saturn counterpart and the car is the Cruz, Sable232 has removed this information. I have received a warning from him and if I edited anymore I will be blocked because of vandalism.
